Jim found himself exhausted during a trip. When he came home, he went to see a doctor. “The reason I was tired, ” Jim says, “was that my kidneys (肾脏)were gone. ”
Jim, 69, a former Air Force pilot, immediately started dialysis(透析) three days a week. A person of his age on dialysis usually lives only about four years. Transplants are a long-shot alternative. The National Kidney Foundation estimates that 13 people die every day while waiting for a donor with the right blood and tissue types.
Jim’s wife, nephew and four family friends offered but weren’t a match. Jim was so discouraged that he was even considering not attending a reunion of some Air Force buddies(铁哥们). But his wife encouraged him to reunite with his old friends, among whom was one he hadn’t seen in 50 years: Doug Coffman. The two had met when they both were learning Vietnamese before they went overseas.
Doug, then 70, felt a strong bond with his band of brothers, even though he hadn’t seen some of them in decades. Their connection went beyond the battlefield in ways most soldiers never experience.
Doug had received help from his friends when he was in trouble, so he felt like it was a time that he could pay that ahead by donating a kidney to Jim. Fortunately, series of testing revealed not only that Doug’s tissue type matched Jim’s but also that he had the kidneys of a 35-year-old.
The transplant was a success. “It’s pretty miraculous to be able to take an organ out of one person’s body—a living organ—put it in another person’s body, and have it work, ” Doug says. “And there’s nothing finer than knowing I’ve helped another person live a better life. ”

There have been many studies that show being in nature is good for your health. Walking in the woods is good for your well-being. Living near trees can help you live longer. But when you go for a walk in the woods, what is it particularly about being in nature or being outdoors that makes you feel good? Is it the sights or smells or sounds? A new study finds it might have something to do with the birds you hear while you have a walk.
Researchers from California Polytechnic State University analyzed how much the natural sounds people hear when they’re outdoors influence well-being. They found that the “chorus” of birds singing increased well-being in protected natural areas.
For the study, researchers placed 10 hidden, evenly spaced speakers on two parts of trails(小路) in the Boulder Open Space and Mountain Parks in Colorado. They played recorded songs from 11 kinds of birds. The researchers take turns to play the birdsong for a few hours a day for a week, and then turned off the speakers for a week at a time. They interviewed hikers after they passed through the areas with the speakers.
“The main result is that hikers that heard the birdsong showed a higher level of well-being compared to those that did not hear the birdsong,” Biology Professor Clinton Francis, who led the research, says.
Hikers who heard more birdsong on the first part of the trail said they felt better. Those who heard more birdsong on the second part reported that they thought more birds lived along that part of the trail. This feeling of more birds helps make the hikers feel better. “With the chorus, we were able to show that natural sounds have a clear effect on the quality of hikers’ experiences,” says Francis.
8.What's the function of the questions in paragraph 1?
A. To bring in the topic of the text. B. To advise people to walk in nature.
C. To call on people to care about nature. D. To raise doubt about the research done before.
9. Why were the speakers placed along the trails?
A. To broadcast chorus live. B. To remind hikers of their health.
C. To improve people's well-being. D. To play sounds of different birds.
10. What was the final step of the research?
A. Recording. B. Comparing. C. Photographing. D. Interviewing.
11. What is the best title for the text?
A. Being in nature is good for people's heath. B. Walking in forests help people live longer.
C. Hearing birdsongs is good for people's health. D. Raising birds improves people’s living quality.
D
A team of researchers has found how to use math to study paintings to learn more about how the art developed in the western world. In their paper published in Proceeding of the National Academy of Sciences, the group describes how they scanned thousands of paintings and then used mathematical algorithms (算法) to find commonalities between them over time.
Beauty, as the saying goes, is in the eye of the beholder — and so it is also with art. Two people looking at the same painting can walk away with vastly different impressions. The study of art history can serve as a channel — casting light on societal trends over time. The re-searchers further note that to date, most studies of art history have been qualitatively (定性地) based, which has led to the results with prejudice, To overcome it, the researchers with this new effort look to math to see if it might be useful in uncovering features of paintings that have been overlooked by human scholars.
The work involved digitally scanning 14, 912 paintings — all of which ( except for two ) were painted by Western artists. The data for each of the paintings was then sent through a mathematical algorithm that drew partitions on the digital images based on contrasting colors. The researchers ran the algorithm on each painting multiple times, each time creating more sections to study. For example, the first run of the algorithm might have simply created two sections on a painting — everything on land and everything in the sky. The second might have split the land into buildings in one section and farmland in another.
The researchers then ran other algorithms designed to look for patterns between the paintings. Doing so allowed them to see trends like painting styles that predominated during certain eras and long-term trends, such as the placement of the horizon. The researchers found that over the past several hundred years, painters have been placing it increasingly higher. In the 17th century, the separation between Earth and sky dominated landscapes — those done in more modern times, in sharp contrast, have the horizon very near the top of the painting.
12. Which of the following is the finding of the researchers?
A. A way to research paintings. B. The development of western art.
C. The similarities between art and math. D. A scientific paper on painting and math.
13 What did the researchers expect to do with math?
A. Deepen the impression of paintings. B. Uncover the features of human scholars.
C. Make a more objective study of paintings. D. Interpret the results of painting qualitatively.
14. How were the algorithms carried out?
A. By observing buildings and farmland. B. By linking land paintings with sky paintings.
C. By analyzing the various parts of the paintings. D. By classifying the different colors of the paintings.
15. What can we learn about the location of the horizon in the painting?
A. It has varied over time.
B. It is always very near the top.
C. It was only placed at the bottom in the 17th century.
D. It has not changed over the past several hundred years.

Nowadays Senior 3 students are generally faced with a lot of pressure, that is rather common. To reduce it, the following suggestion may help. First of all, know exactly what lead to your pressure, and then you can take measures to deal with it. Secondly, set a goal that is not too high. In the other words, don't put too many pressure on yourself. Thirdly, find a way to relax yourself occasionally. For example, you can listen music, go swimming or just simple go walking. Eventually, make friends with others, such as your classmates, your teachers and our parents. They will understand you and come to your help when you were really in trouble. In a word, never get yourself sticking in the pressure, for "impossible is nothing".

根据文章第一段“A team of researchers has found how to use math to study paintings to learn more about how the art developed in the western world.”(一组研究人员发现了如何使用数学来研究绘画,以更多地了解艺术在西方世界是如何发展的。)
根据文章第二段“The re-searchers further note that to date, most studies of art history have been qualitatively (定性地) based, which has led to the results with prejudice, To overcome it, the researchers with this new effort look to math to see if it might be useful in uncovering features of paintings that have been overlooked by human scholars.”(研究人员进一步指出,迄今为止,大多数艺术史研究都是以定性为基础的,这导致了带有偏见的结果,为了克服它,研究人员以这种新的努力着眼于数学,看看它是否可能有助于揭示被人类学者忽视的绘画特征。)
根据文章第三段“The data for each of the paintings was then sent through a mathematical algorithm that drew partitions on the digital images based on contrasting colors. The researchers ran the algorithm on each painting multiple times, each time creating more sections to study.”(然后通过数学算法发送每幅画的数据,该算法根据对比色在数字图像上绘制分区。
根据文章最后一段“The researchers found that over the past several hundred years, painters have been placing it increasingly higher. In the 17th century, the separation between Earth and sky dominated landscapes — those done in more modern times, in sharp contrast, have the horizon very near the top of the painting.”(研究人员发现,在过去的几百年里,画家们一直把它放得越来越高。
21. 选A。provide … with意为“向……提供……”。21世纪教育网

34. 选D。bear the responsibility(承担责任),系习惯搭配。
35. 选D。leave no room不留余地。
38. 选A。
