School had just started in August when Conner began throwing up for no reason. It wasn’t long before the boy also began suffering terrible headaches. In February a 1.7-inch tumor (肿瘤) was found in his brain and Conner was set to begin to receive radiation (放射疗法) treatments. Before treatments start, technicians make a white plastic mask to keep patients immovable and protect unaffected parts of the brain while radiation is directed at the tumor.
It’s an unpleasant experience and a frightening time. The doctor Cook decided that the masks could at least be made to look like something fun — maybe Batman or Mickey Mouse. “I started thinking these masks are white and not fun at all for kids,” she told The Greenville News. “I felt like if we could make it a little more fun for them, they might be a little more excited about coming in for the treatment. Because the kids are afraid. While the treatment itself isn’t physically painful, it can cause a lot of anxiety. And the treatment is required daily for up to six weeks.” And the masks really make a difference. “The kids really like them because they get to choose something themselves.” Cook said.
When new children come in for the treatment, Cook finds out what their favorite movies or cartoon characters are. Then she sets about creating the mask by drawing the image she wants onto paper, sticking it with glue, and once it’s dry, she applies the colors using paints. Each child can take the mask home once the treatment ends.
“Coming to the doctor always means fear and pain. I wanted to make it fun,” she said. “The kids really love it. It’s something they enjoy and can relate to. And it fills an interest I have. I get great pleasure from it.”

Figure skating, speed skating, and ice hockey can all trace their beginnings to early civilizations that fastened animal bones to their feet to skate on ice, according to A Dictionary of British History. Bone runners found in Switzerland date as far back as 3000 B. C. and there is also evidence of ice skating in Scandinavia in the Middle Ages.
Modern skating perhaps got its start in the Netherlands, where it was considered a national recreation in the early 17th century, when nobles skated on frozen canals for fun. Wealthy Europeans picked up the sport while visiting the Netherlands, and British royals soon brought skating back to England in the late 1600s. When the Thames froze over in 1683, skating was among the many recreations at London’s famous winter fair on the ice, which King Charles II attended.
At the end of the 18th century, American ballet dancer Jackson Haines transformed the sport into what is now known as figure skating by introducing elements of ballet to the ice. Haines skated in bear and ballet costumes and toured with exhibitions across Europe, where he was most admired in Vienna, Austria.
Ice skating evolved into other sports, including speed skating and ice hockey. Speed skating has been around as early as Dutch people dared to race on their skates, but hockey developed in 19th century Canada as an icy version of field hockey. Both were well-established by the 1900s, so they were on the list in the first Winter Olympics.
Since the 1900s, different ice skating clubs have been founded around the Western world. As interest grew, the clubs’ membership increased over the next 50 years. By the end of 20th century, ice skating was so widespread that it was one of the few recreations enjoyed by almost every westerner.
8. Which of the following is the oldest sport according to the text?
A. Ice hockey. B. Bone running.
C. Speed skating. D. Figure skating.
9. Who contributed most to the figure skating?
A. Jackson Haines. B. British royals.
C. Dutch people. D. King Charles II.
10. In what order did the author write the passage?

C. In order of frequency. D. In order of time.
11. What does the text mainly talk about?
A. How ice skating came into being.
B. Why ice skating is famous in the world.
C. How ice skating became well-received.
D. Why ice skating enters Winter Olympics.

Automaker General Motors has announced the expectation of achieving carbon neutrality (中和) by 2040. On the way to that goal, the company hopes to get rid of automobile emissions (排放物) by 2035.
GM said it will take a science-based approach to become carbon neutral, balancing carbon dioxide emissions. Furthermore, it plans to remove gas-powered vehicle production by 2035. It intends that by 2025, 40% of its vehicles will be battery powered.
“General Motors is joining governments and companies around the globe working to establish a safer, greener and better world,” said Mary Barra, GM chairman and CEO. “We encourage others to work together and make a significant influence on our industry and on the economy as a whole.”
Transportation is the largest contributor of greenhouse gas emissions in the United States, just over 28%, the Environmental Protection Agency reported. That is why GM and other industry leaders have joined the Science Based Targets initiative, which calls on businesses to take action to do with climate change.
A clear step for GM to become carbon neutral is to switch from internal combustion engines to electric vehicles. Traditional gas vehicles make up about 75% of GM’s greenhouse emissions, the company said. Their production facilities make up the other 25%, but the manufacturer aims to control the ratio (比率) by using wind and solar energy. GM said it will power its U.S. factories with 100% renewable energy by 2030 and globally by 2035.
The bigger obstacle falls on the consumer. An electric vehicle is significantly more expensive. The Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC) says the average electric car costs $ 19,000 more than a gasoline-powered car. But GM has spent years improving its battery technology. Maybe that’s the reason why it can get rid of automobile emissions in the next 14 years with much confidence.
12. What measure is GM taking to achieve the goal of removing carbon dioxide emissions?
A. Working with global organizations.
B. Cutting back on battery-powered cars.
C. Gaining industrial and financial support.
D. Reducing production of cars powered by gas.
13. What is Mary Barra’s attitude towards GM’s carbon-neutral approach?
A. Supportive. B. Opposed.
C. Critical. D. Indifferent.
14. According to the passage, what results in the greenhouse gas emissions in the US to a large extent?
A. Renewable energy. B. Fast food.
C. Transportation. D. Electric vehicles.
15. Which of the following best explains the word “manufacturer” underlined in paragraph 5?
A. Consumer. B. Environmentalist.
C. Producer. D. Advertiser.
【答案】12. D 13. A 14. C 15. C

根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
Giving generously and receiving gratefully make it easier to live happily with others. ___16___
Let me start with the idea of giving generously. ___17___ For example, my husband and I have family members who only contact us when they need money. We usually accept their requests, but we rarely receive a “ thank you ”. Most people would say that my husband and I are being used, and I suppose we are. But when we give, we shouldn't be giving for the purpose of getting gratitude or praise. ___18___
The good news is that when we lead our lives being nice to others, our lives run more smoothly. If you're generous, yes, some people will use you. But if you practice being generous, most of your relationships will improve.
___19___ I truly believe that you cannot say "thank you" enough when you receive. So often we get lazy about expressing gratitude. Parents can feel unappreciated by their children, and teachers can feel unappreciated by their students. Do you think it unnecessary to thank them when receiving just because a task is part of someone's job description? That's wrong!
Words of appreciation make others feel good about themselves like nothing else. It's good for us to say "thank you" because we regularly need to remind ourselves of how lucky we are. ___20___
If you are looking for a way to improve your life, I can give you one: Give generously and receive gratefully.
A. Thus, saying "thank you” can bring us good luck.
B. Rather, we should be giving because it's a good thing.
C. And hearing those two words can make us feel great for days.
D. And at the same time, we should remember to receive gratefully.
E. In return, we are to help others by giving them our time or money,
F. I think people are unwilling to be generous to others for fear of being used.
G. Yet, why do we have such difficulty achieving these things in our relationships?
【答案】16. G 17. F 18. B 19. D 20. C

【分析】本文是一篇议论文。文章主要议论了在人际关系中很难做到慷慨地给予、心怀感激地接受的原因,也表达了作者对于慷慨给予、心怀感激接受做法的认可。
【16题详解】
上文“Giving generously and receiving gratefully make it easier to live happily with others.(慷慨地给予,心怀感激地接受,让我们更容易与他人幸福地生活在一起。)”说明慷慨给予和心怀感激接受可以生活的更加幸福。根据文章第四段“So often we get lazy about expressing gratitude. (我们经常懒得去表达感激。)”可知,很多人却难以做到表达感激。G选项Yet, why do we have such difficulty achieving these things in our relationships?(然而,为什么我们在人际关系中很难做到这些呢?)符合文意,引出下文:人们为何难以做到慷慨给予和心怀感激的接受。故选G项。
【17题详解】
根据文章第一个空中所填“Yet, why do we have such difficulty achieving these things in our relationships?(然而,为什么我们在人际关系中很难做到这些呢?)”可知,第二段讲述的主要是为何我们在人际关系中很难做到慷慨给予。下文“Most people would say that my husband and I are being used, and I suppose we are.(很多人会说我和我丈夫被利用了,我想确实是这样。)”说明大家不愿慷慨给予的原因在于感觉被利用。F选项I think people are unwilling to be generous to others for fear of being used.(我认为人们之所以不愿意慷慨解囊,是因为害怕被人利用。)与上下文意相符。being used是关键词。故选F项。
【18题详解】
根据上文“But when we give, we shouldn't be giving for the purpose of getting gratitude or praise. (但是当我们给予时,我们不应该为了得到感激或赞美而给予。)”可知,我们的给予不是为了感激和赞美,所以填空处应是对我们给予的原因进行解释。B选项Rather, we should be giving because it's a good thing.(相反,我们应该给予,因为这是一件好事。)讲明因为给予是一件好事,因此我们给予,符合文意。故选B项。
【19题详解】
下文“I truly believe that you cannot say "thank you" enough when you receive.(我真心相信,当你收到礼物的时候,再怎么说“谢谢”也不为过。)”说明我们要记得真心感激别人的给予。D选项And at the same time, we should remember to receive gratefully.(同时,我们也要记得感激地接受。)符合文意。"thank you" 呼应gratefully。故选D项。
【20题详解】
根据上文“ It's good for us to say "thank you" because we regularly need to remind ourselves of how lucky we are.(对我们来说,说“谢谢”是件好事,因为我们需要经常提醒自己,我们是多么幸运。)”可知,“谢谢”这两个词可以使自己感到快乐。C选项And hearing those two words can make us feel great for days.(听到这两个词会让我们感觉好上好几天。)中those two words指的是上文中的“谢谢”,符合文意。故选C项。

Having held the interschool storytelling championship for the past two years, I was the shining star of my school. When it came to choosing the right candidate to participate in such competitions, I was always the first choice. Naturally, I was once again selected to represent my school in the approaching contest this year.
Upon hearing the fact that I was chosen again my classmates and friends acknowledged that I would undoubtedly emerge as the champion again. Consequently, I became conceited. I was so proud that I neglected the importance of practicing for the contest.
A week before the contest, my teacher Ms. Sara asked, “Selena, would you like to stand in front of the class to rehearse for the contest?” She had tutored me in the past two competitions and knew how important practice was. “Just imagine you are on the stage in the presence of the audience,” she added.
“I’m sorry, Ms. Sara,” I replied. “I have a bit of a sore throat.”
This was usually the lie I would tell whenever my teacher requested me to practice in front of the class. I always found excuses to avoid doing it because I believed that I was the best and therefore the practice was unnecessary. On one occasion, I even told Ms. Sara not to worry too much as I was well prepared for the contest. In fact, I did everything but practice my script. I only managed to glance briefly through the story the day before the contest. As the best storyteller among the students of the local secondary schools, I was too vain to practice and expected everything to be fine.
The contest was being held in the local community hall. On the day of the contest, the hall was packed. My school teachers and principal were there along with many of my classmates and schoolmates. I was the eighth contestant out of twenty in total. Those who spoke before me did extremely well. On seeing their fascinating and outstanding performance, I began to lose confidence in myself. My palms sweated heavily and I started to feel nervous.
Paragraph 1:
Soon, it was my turn to talk.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Paragraph 2:
Finally, results were announced after the contest.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】Possible version:
Soon, it was my turn to talk. Facing the crowd, I found myself suffering from stage fright. I spoke in an expressionless voice and even stuttered a few times as I forgot parts of the story. My legs trembled and so did my voice. On seeing my terrible performance, the judges shook their heads. The supporters from my school looked at me in disappointment. I have never been so embarrassed in my life. In the end, I walked off the stage, my eyes filled with tears.
Finally, results were announced after the contest. I didn’t win any prizes—not even a consolation one. It was not surprising at all. I felt ashamed when I faced my classmates and of course, Ms. Sara. I regretted underestimating my opponents and overestimating myself. My vanity had cost me the championship. I now regretted being so arrogant. I had learned my lesson well and finally understood the meaning of the two sayings, “Pride goes before a fall.” and “Practice makes perfect.”
