As a human, you may have experienced a phenomenon(现象)commonly known as“dessert stomach.”You come to the end of a large meal, feeling like you couldn't possibly eat another piece of food. Then dessert is offered, and your appetite(食欲)suddenly reappears. It would appear as if a corner of your stomach has been set aside for it. What you may not know is that “dessert stomach”can also be referred to as“sensory-specific satiety(饱足)”,refers to the idea that the feeling of fullness after a large meal doesn't mean that your body is completely full. Instead, your body is filled or bored with the flavor of whatever you were just eating. This is why when another food with a different flavor is presented, you suddenly feel able to fit more food into your body. In other words, the promise of a different type of food and your body's desire to consume it can prevent your brain from telling your body it's truly full.
Why humans experience SSS could be related to the human development. What SSS teaches us is that the human body is capable of consuming food beyond normal limits. This ability was likely useful thousands of years ago when food was not readily available. At risk of food shortage, a person could push their body with whatever food was at hand to create an energy store in case supplies ran too low. The problem is that for many people today, food shortage is not a present danger. Thus, SSS can easily result in people overeating and experiencing unhealthy weight gain.
So, the next time you find yourself eyeing a delicious cake or doughnut over your already full stomach, remember that you've probably already eaten your fill,no matter how much your body seems to be screaming,“Eat it!”
39. What makes a“dessert stomach”after a large meal?
A.A healthy appetite. B.The feeling of fullness.
C.A different flavor. D.The boredom from dessert.
40.What might be a possible result of SSS nowadays?
A.More food waste. B.The food shortage.
C.Good energy store. D.People's overweight.
41.What is suggested on eating sweets with a“dessert stomach”?
A.Dropping the idea. B.Enjoying the dessert.
C.Choosing other food. D.Throwing away cakes.

The population of monarchs passing the winter in Mexico appears to have fallen. Now, the good news for Illinois' state insects: The Field Museum in Chicago is trying to figure out what makes a successful monarch garden in the city, and it's proper to start preparing for this summer.
The Field Museum project involves citizens reporting on spaces that researchers can't walk into every day, like backyards. Participants sent in weekly reports, including the makeup of their garden, and development of eggs and caterpillars. The more successful gardens had more milkweed(乳汁草)and blooming plants, multiple milkweed species, and tended to be larger plots. But Klinger,an expert at the Field Museum, said one participant with a single plant watched eggs transform all the way to chrysalises(蛹).So,she said,“You just need one plant.”
In 2020,during the second season of the study, the number of caterpillars dropped even though the number of participants in the study more than doubled.
Chicago saw a hot,dry summer——its warmest on record, and Klinger said that may have affected the health of the milkweed plants. The reports out of Mexico noted this season's eastern population drop followed an increase in forest loss, which was 4 times what it was a year ago, primarily from illegal tree cutting,as well as trees hit by wind and drought. But they also said spring and summer weather conditions were tough for milkweed blossoms and egg development in the southern US, which is largely responsible for limiting reproduction.
“But now is the optimum time to start planning to plant some milkweed. The best thing to do is what you can do. One milkweed plant in a pot on your balcony(阳台)is doing something,”Klinger said.
(以下是A种题型)

A. More milkweed is a must for larger plots.
B.It's necessary to participate in this project.
C.It's easy for citizens to garden for monarchs.
D. One plant can also make a great difference.
43. What is paragraph 4 mainly about?
A.Bad weather seen in the southern US.
B.Factors leading to the monarch's decline.
C.Human activities causing harm to butterflies.
D.Plants responsible for the monarch's reproduction.
44. What does the underlined word “optimum”in paragraph 5 mean?
A.Fixed. B.Special. C.Perfect. D.Acceptable.
45.Which of the following can be the best title for the text?
A.Gardeners Lend All Insects a Hand
B.Plant Milkweed to Save Monarchs
C. Cities Provide the Best Habitat for Monarchs
D.Necessary Approaches to Helping out Butterflies
(以下是B种题型)
42.What's the intention of the Field Museum project?
43.What's the main idea of paragraph 2?
44.Why was there an increase in the forest loss?
45.What is the author's attitude towards the Field Museum project?
根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。答案写在答题卡上。
Few things are as wonderful as visiting a beautiful natural place, breathing the fresh air and enjoying the beauty._____46____People can love a place to death if they aren't careful. In 1990, the Leave No Trace movement attempted to help. They introduced the following principles to encourage people to both enjoy and protect the great outdoors.
Plan ahead. 47 Check the weather forecast, plan what clothing to wear, and think about a water supply. Also, check the area's rules for use.
Throw away waste properly. Never leave garbage behind. Don't leave your food wrappers, cans or leftovers._____48
Respect wildlife. You should stay at least 100meters away from wildlife, so you don't disturb any animals. 49 Protect your food so that animals can't get into it, and don't feed the animals on anything.Human food isn't good for them, and becoming comfortable with humans is dangerous for them. They may forget how to survive in the wild or become less afraid of humans.
50 Don't make loud noises or play loud music when you're out in natural environments. It annoys both the animals and humans. Don't travel in large groups as it makes it troublesome for other travelers to move around on the paths.
The principles above can help everyone share the outdoors comfortably. We all need to take care of the earth we know and love.
- Be kind to other visitors.
- What you take in,take out.
- But enjoying nature comes at a price.
- D.Getting too close could be dangerous.
