To have a good conversation is a pleasure for most people. But not every conversation is good. Sometimes there are uncomfortable silences while people try to think of something to say. Some conversations are one-sided. One person asks all the questions, and the other just gives one-word answers. A good conversation needs two or more people to keep it going.
To get the ball rolling in a conversation, ask something about the other person. "What do you do?" is a good place to start. Or simply say, "Tell me about yourself." Most people love a chance to talk about themselves.
As the other person begins to respond to (回应) your question, look for common ground. If you ask someone about their weekend, the person could talk about what they did. Then you can share what you did and even your plans for the coming weekend.
When the other person is talking, it is important to be interested in them. Listen carefully and do not cut in to add your experience. When they finish, ask some more questions. Don't allow your eyes to wander around(游离)as they talk. That gives the message that you're not really interested in them. Besides, if you're answering a question, don't go on and on. Give an answer and stop. A good conversation is a little like a tennis game, in which the ball goes back and forth. Also, avoid yes/no questions. They can stop a conversation. Instead, ask open-ended questions using what or why.
A conversation should end well, too. You can say, "I need to run now." You may also give a reason. Say something like, "I really need to get going. My class starts in 20 minutes."
Now, go out and enjoy a good conversation!
    26. Which of the following is helpful for having a good conversation?
    A. Give one-word answers to keep the conversation going.
    B. Ask something about the other person to start a conversation.
    C. Talk more about yourself to get the other person interested.
    D. Cut in to add your own experience when the other person is talking.
    27. What does the underlined phrase "common ground" in paragraph 3 mean?
    A. Proper replies. B. Good examples. C. Different opinions. D. Shared interest.
    28. According to the writer, how are a good conversation and a tennis game alike?
    A. They are both based on interest. B. They are both two-sided activities.
    C. They are both ways of communication. D. They are both improved through practice.
    29. In which part of the newspaper can you read the passage?
    A. LIFE SKILLS B. SCHOOL TIME C. MAGIC WORLD D. NEWS DESK
    D

Leoh Ming Pei, one of the world's best-known architects(建筑师), left over 50 designs during his long career. These amazing works stand as his gifts to the world.
The glass pyramid of the Louvre Museum in Paris, France might be
Pei's most famous work. Back in the 1980s, the Louvre Museum was having trouble with traffic. To solve the problem, Pei planned to dig an underground hall and place a glass pyramid on top. Many people didn't like the idea. They said it was too modern for the classical museum. However, the idea turned out to be a success. It is not only the museum's main entrance, but also a huge skylight (天窗).
In 2006, Pei was invited to build a museum in his hometown Suzhou.
He tried to include local and historical ideas in his design. He built small
halls with traditional white walls and dark roofs, just like the classical
Chinese gardens. Moreover, the lines and windows in the roof bring
    something modern to the museum.
His style may come from his _____.The famous Lion Grove Garden(狮子林) in Suzhou used to be owned by Pei's family. Pei spent some summers there as a child. Maybe that was when Pei developed his interest in architecture. Pei spent most of his adult years in the US, first studying at universities and then working in different places. Even though he was trained in the US, the beauty of Chinese Classics was well displayed in many of his designs. "I've never left China because home is a place your heart always belongs to," Pei once said.
Over the last century, many building trends(潮流)have come and gone. But the works of Pei have not. "A lasting architecture has to have roots." Pei once told The New York Times. That may explain why he and his works have stood the test of time.

Every now and then you may see news of satellites (卫星) sent into space. On Feb 21,for example,US company SpaceX took 46 satellites into orbit (轨道).On Feb 27,China sent 22 satellites into space. Why do we need so many satellites? What do they do out there?
At present, there are more than 3,000 active satellites moving around the Earth.Satellites do all kinds of work. They are used to send TV signals, give you directions on the road and help scientists do research.

Satellites can also provide information about clouds, oceans, land and ice. They help scientists predict changes in weather and climate.By closely watching wildfires and volcanoes, satellites help people deal with natural disasters.Farmers can use satellite images to decide the best time to water their fields.
Some satellites fly near other planets. They may look for water on Mars or take close-up pictures of other planets. In 2020,video website Bilibili sent a satellite into space. Its job is to look at other planets and share the pictures and videos with Bilibili's users.
Like any other machines, satellites do not last forever. When they die, they either burn up or become space junk.Someday we may need to send "garbage trucks" to clean them up.

Ideas of beauty are like the sea: they always change, but they’re always somehow the same. There are some things that have always been considered beautiful, while other fashions come and go.
Some beautiful qualities are the same across cultures and centuries. One important part of beauty is symmetry. Symmetry means how alike two halves of an object are. Faces that are symmetrical are considered more beautiful than those that aren’t. Signs of good health are also always called beautiful, such as shiny hair, clear skin, and strong teeth. Strong teeth don’t necessarily have to be white, though. In some parts of Vietnam (越南), black teeth are considered attractive.
Other parts of beauty change with time and geography. Until recently-40 or 50 years ago, it was beautiful to be soft and round. Having some fat was considered beautiful throughout most of history. It meant that you were healthy and didn’t have to work hard. Now we know that being fit is healthy, too. Being fit is something that takes time and effort-and probably money. Being thin now shows status (地位)the way being fat did.
Different cultures have different ideas of beauty. Some cultures in Africa and Asia value long necks. Women have their necks stretched with metal rings to achieve a beautiful look. In ancient China, bound feet (裹足)were beautiful though they prevented women from walking comfortably.
Some ideas of beauty change with our opinions of health and status, but others stay the same. There are few rules about beauty. In the end, the most beautiful person in the world is the one you look at with love.
    23. What’s the meaning of the underlined word “symmetry”?
    A. energy B. feature C. habit D. balance
    24. According to this passage, why is thinness considered attractive nowadays?
    A. It represents happiness.
    B. It represents wealth and good health.
    C. It represents illness.
    D. It represents a deep understanding of culture.
    25. Which is the best title for this passage?
    A. The Search for Beauty through Ages and Areas
    B. Three Tips for a Beautiful Neck
    C. Similar Standards of Beauty
    D. The Importance of Clear Skin
    C

Sunscreen or sunblock, SPF 15, SPF 60, sunscreen is covered with strange letters and numbers. Do you know how sunscreen really works?
First, let’s explain the meaning of sunscreen. Sunscreen is different from sunblock: unlike sunblock, sunscreen allows some light to reach the skin. The ingredients(原料)in sunscreen block some light, unlike those in sunblock, which block all of it. Some sunscreen ingredients absorb light and turn it into heat. Others bounce(反射)it off your skin. Different ingredients act on different kinds of light rays.
Let’s move on to SPF. SPF stands for “sun protection factor”. The higher the SPF number, the more protection you get. Experts(专家)usually recommend SPF 15 or higher.
You should learn to use it correctly. Experts recommend putting sunscreen on 15-30 minutes before you go out into the sun. Some recommend reusing sunscreen every hour or so after that. Others say you should reuse 30 minutes after going out into the sun, but then leave it alone unless you sweat or swim. An adult in a swimsuit should use about an ounce of sunscreen for his or her whole body. About one-quarter to one-third of a teaspoon is enough for the face.
Using sunscreen correctly can be the difference between healthy or unhealthy skin. Think about what you want, and get the right sun protection for you.
    26. What is the article mainly about?
    A. How to use sunscreen. B. The history of sunblock.
    C. How to choose sunscreen. D. The important facts about sunscreen.
    27. Which of the following statements is NOT true?
    A. Less than a teaspoon of sunscreen is enough for your face.
    B. Ingredients in some sunscreens can absorb light and turn it into heat.
    C. Sunblock allows some light to reach the skin.
    D. A higher SPF means more sun protection.
    28. What is the writer’s purpose in this passage?
    A. To tell a series of short stories.
    B. To describe different sun protection choices.
    C. To make readers interested using jokes.
    D. To warn of the dangers of too much sunshine.
    D
Some years ago, our head teacher, Mrs. Water decided to start a school newspaper, and get as many students as possible to take on the job of producing it—and parents, too. She felt the newspaper would help them learn more about school life, through articles on things like sports achievements and art projects, which not all students know about if they’re not taking part. Students took the whole thing very seriously—and we now have a prize—winning newspaper!
Some of my friends joined the newspaper team immediately and enjoyed it. I’d always loved creative writing and drawing cartoons, which I thought would be perfect in the newspaper, so I signed up. My dad, who’s a reporter, was pleased—he thought that even though I wasn’t fond of a job like his, the newspaper would be a great chance for me. And he was right—I loved it! Dad often came along to give advice, which was popular with the students. It was difficult sometimes, if he was busy, but he learned a lot about the school that way.
My first job was writing a report about a sports event—a writing style I’d never tried before. But Dad reminded it was similar in some ways to writing a story—getting information in the right order. Once I’d understood that, there was no stopping me — and after my first efforts, I developed quite a professional (专业的)style, which was fantastic. Sometimes the team couldn’t use what I’d written, or my cartoons, for whatever reason, but I didn’t mind. And sometimes it was hard to finish articles on time, but I usually got there.
I’m now one of the editors—we decide what goes into the newspaper, so our names no longer appear in print. And it’s stressful sometimes as we don’t have much time, but we try to manage that properly. We also correct mistakes in people’s articles, which we all had to get used to, but we were soon doing it without thinking— and in our own schoolwork, too. I still put off calling people outside school for comments (评论)on articles, but I guess it’s all good experience—at least, that’s what Dad says!
    29. Mrs. Water wanted to start a student newspaper to ________.
    A. provide an activity for students not interested in sports or art
    B. make students feel more confident about taking part in something
    C. keep students better informed about what was happening at school
    D. give students the experience of being successful at something
    30. The writer decided to join the newspaper because ________.
    A. he had ideas about some work he could do for it
    B. he was considering a career in writing news
    C. his friends had encouraged him to do so
    D. he liked the idea of being part of a team
    31. When the writer first started working on the newspaper, he was ________.
    A. unhappy when his stories sometimes weren’t used
    B. satisfied with the way his writing skills improved
    C. pleased to find he could make use of his art skills
    D. worried he’d be late completing some of his writing
    32. What does the writer say about his role on the newspaper now?
    A. He feels uncomfortable about correcting other students’ work.
    B. He still needs to improve the way he manages his time.
    C. He’s happier to deal with making phone calls to others.
    D. He’s become better at making articles correct.
