    Rachel Carson (1907-1964)

Passenger pigeons(旅鸽) once flew over much of the United States in unbelievable numbers. Written accounts from the 18th and 19th centuries described flocks(群) so large that they darkened the sky for hours.
It was calculated that when its population reached its highest point, there were more than 3 billion passenger pigeons—a number equal to 24 to 40 percent of the total bird population in the United States, making it perhaps the most abundant bird in the world. Even as late as 1870 when their numbers had already become smaller, a flock believed to be 1 mile wide and 320 miles (about 515 kilometers) long was seen near Cincinnati.
Sadly, the abundance of passenger pigeons may have been their undoing. Where the birds were most abundant, people believed there was an ever-lasting supply and killed them by the thousands. Commercial hunters attracted them to small clearings with grain, until pigeons had settled to feed, then threw large nets over them, taking hundreds at a time. The birds were shipped to large cities and sold in restaurants.
By the closing decades of the 19th century, the hardwood forests where passenger pigeons nested had been damaged by Americans’ need for wood, which scattered(驱散) the flocks and forced the birds to go farther north, where cold temperatures and spring storms contributed to their decline. Soon the great flocks were gone, never to be seen again.
In 1897, the state of Michigan passed a law prohibiting the killing of passenger pigeons but by then, no sizable flocks had been seen in the state for 10 years. The last confirmed wild pigeon in the United States was shot by a boy in Pike County, Ohio, in 1900. For a time, a few birds survived under human care. The last of them, known affectionately as Martha, died at the Cincinnati Zoological Garden on September 1, 1914.
4、In the 18th and early 19th centuries, passenger pigeons _______.
A.were the biggest bird in the world
B.lived mainly in the south of America
C.did great harm to the natural environment
D.were the largest population in the US
5、The underlined word “undoing” probably refers to the pigeons’ _______.
    A.escape B.ruin C.liberation D.evolution
6、What was the main reason for people to kill passenger pigeons?
A.To seek pleasure. B.To save other birds.
C.To make money. D.To protect crops.
7、What can we infer about the law passed in Michigan?
A.It was ignored by the public. B.It was declared too late.
C.It was unfair. D.It was strict.
Some parents will buy any high-tech toy if they think it will help their child, but researchers said puzzles help children with math-related skills.
Psychologist Susan Levine, an expert on mathematics development in young children the University of Chicago, found children who play with puzzles between ages 2 and 4 later develop better spatial skills. Puzzle play was found to be a significant predictor of cognition(认知) after controlling for differences in parents’ income, education and the amount of parent talk, Levine said.
The researchers analyzed video recordings of 53 child-parent pairs during everyday activities at home and found children who play with puzzles between 26 and 46 months of age have better spatial skills when assessed at 54 months of age.
“The children who played with puzzles performed better than those who did not, on tasks that assessed their ability to rotate(旋转) and translate shapes,” Levine said in a statement.
The parents were asked to interact with their children as they normally would, and about half of children in the study played with puzzles at one time. Higher-income parents tended to have children play with puzzles more frequently, and both boys and girls who played with puzzles had better spatial skills. However, boys tended to play with more complex puzzles than girls, and the parents of boys provided more spatial language and were more active during puzzle play than parents of girls.
The findings were published in the journal Developmental Science.
8、In which aspect do children benefit from puzzle play?
    A. Building confidence. B. Developing spatial skills.
    C. Learning self-control. D. Gaining high-tech knowledge.
9、What did Levine take into consideration when designing her experiment?
    A. Parents’ age. B. Children’s imagination.
    C. Parents’ education. D. Child-parent relationship.
10、How do boy differ from girls in puzzle play?
    A. They play with puzzles more often.
    B. They tend to talk less during the game.
    C. They prefer to use more spatial language.
    D. They are likely to play with tougher puzzles.
11、What is the text mainly about?
    A. A mathematical method. B. A scientific study.
    C. A woman psychologist. D. A teaching program.
When milk arrived on the doorstep
When I was a boy growing up in New Jersey in the 1960s, we had a milkman delivering milk to our doorstep. His name was Mr. Basille. He wore a white cap and drove a white truck. As a 5-year-old boy, I couldn’t take my eyes off the coin changer fixed to his belt. He noticed this one day during a delivery and gave me a quarter out of his coin changer.
Of course, he delivered more than milk. There was cheese, eggs and so on. If we needed to change our order, my mother would pen a note –“Please add a bottle of buttermilk next delivery”—and place it in the box along with the empty bottles. And then, the buttermilk would magically(魔术般) appear.
All of this was about more than convenience. There existed a close relationship between families and their milkmen. Mr. Basille even had a key to our house, for those times when it was so cold outside that we put the box indoors, so that the milk wouldn’t freeze. And I remember Mr. Basille from time to time taking a break at our kitchen table, having a cup of tea and telling stories about his delivery.
There is sadly no home milk delivery today. Big companies allowed the production of cheaper milk, thus making it difficult for milkmen to compete(竞争). Besides, milk is for sale everywhere, and it may just not have been practical to have a delivery service.
Recently, an old milk box in the countryside I saw brought back my childhood memories. I took it home and planted it on the back porch(门廊). Every so often my son’s friends will ask what it is. So I start telling stories of my boyhood, and of the milkman who brought us friendship along with his milk.
12、Mr. Basille gave the boy a quarter out of his coin changer _____.
A.to show his magical power B.to pay for the delivery
C.to satisfy his curiosity D.to please his mother
13、What can be inferred from the fact that the milkman had the key to the boy’s house?
A.He wanted to have tea there. B.He was a respectable person.
C.He was treated as a family member. D.He was fully trusted by the family.
14、Why does home milk delivery no longer exist?
A.Nobody wants to be a milkman now. B.It has been driven out of the market.
C.Its service is getting poor. D.It is forbidden by law.
15、Why did the author bring back home an old milk box?
A.He missed the good old days. B.He wanted to tell interesting stories.
C.He needed it for his milk bottles. D.He planted flowers in it.

    The Miracle Coat
A few years ago, I was having dinner with some good friends from work to celebrate the upcoming Christmas holiday. As we were finishing up the evening, one of my friends told us a very sad story about something that had happened the day before. Her son’s friend was in his mid-twenties and self-employed. He lived on the second floor of a house nearby. Someone who lived on the first floor had been smoking and fell asleep. The house burned down. All the occupants escaped, but the house was completely destroyed with everything in it. All this young man had were the clothes on his back and his pickup truck. He had no family in the area and nowhere to go. My friend was putting him up for a few days until he could decide what to do next. Those of us sitting at the dinner table were horrified. Everyone started opening their wallets to contribute money. My friend put up her hand and said, “He will not accept money. We tried to convince him, but he thinks it is charity and won’t take it. All he wants is a warm coat and some used clothing if anyone has some.” We were all more than happy to fulfill this request and were told that he wore a size 2XL. None of us knew men who wore that size, so it was going to be a bit of a challenge to take care of this quickly.
It was a typically cold New York Christmas, and I couldn’t imagine him without a coat. I shed some tears on the drive home, a combination of grateful tears for the many blessings I had in my life and sad tears for this poor, young man and his troubles. I went to bed and woke up in the middle of the night with a very clear thought in my mind. I was to visit a nearby thrift store(旧货商店) and find this young man a coat. The next morning I got dressed and went to the thrift shop. I was there when it opened at nine.

A.mind思想;B.body身体;C.wealth财富;D.health健康。
A.similar相似的;B.familiar熟悉的;C.strange奇怪的;D.curious好奇的。
A.trap陷阱;B.mistake错误;C.trouble麻烦;D.difficulty困难。
A.formal正式的;B.normal正常的;C.high高;D.low低。
A.shape形状;B.level级别;C.situation形式,处境;D.condition情况。
A.processed进程;B.improved提高;C.changed改变;D.enlarged扩大。
    31、答案:A
A.rather than而不是;B.or rather倒不如说;C.other than除了;D.or other或者说。
Covering ②the ③were ④to increase ⑤is designed ⑥and ⑦populations ⑧eventually ⑨as ⑩that
因此填were。
故填is designed。
    Dear David,
How nice to hear from you again. You want to know what is going on in schools in China? In short, things have begun to improve since schools were called on to reduce learning load. I don’t know about others, but I used to have to work even at weekends doing endless homework and attending classes as well. Now I have more free time. I can follow my own interests such as reading books, visiting museums, and taking computer lessons. In the evenings I can watch news on TV or read newspapers. What’s more, I can go to bed earlier. As far as I know, everyone is happy about this new arrangement of things.
    Best wishes,
    Li Hua
However, I went through every coat and jacket but found nothing even close to what I needed. Suddenly, a lady came out of the back room, so I stopped to ask if she had anything in the back in that size. I explained the poor young man’s story. She went in the back and returned a few minutes later saying there was nothing else. I was upset. However, a moment later, another woman came out of the back with what looked like a brand-new down parka in her arms. She said, “This was dropped in our overnight bin. It was the only thing in the bin. Is this what you’re looking for?” It was perfect! I was stunned and could barely speak.
This was a Christmas miracle! There was certainly no other explanation for why I, a perfect stranger, was somehow charged with finding him a coat. Or why there just happened to be only one item, the perfect coat, left in the overnight bin of this thrift store. (176 words)
