Jane Fonda, a legendary Hollywood actress, is 84 now, but the successful actress and activist has clearly not let age fade her. She starred in a string of classics, from kitsch Barbarella to dramas Klute and Coming Home, which both won her Best Actress Oscars.
“I believe luck is preparation meeting opportunity.” The way Fonda sees it, you must be prepared, which is the key to moving forward. “How can I be a more stable individual? How do I turn myself into somebody desiring to learn? All of these you don’t necessarily start off with, but you develop them as you go through life.”
Put simply, acting is in her bones. Her father was the famous Henry Fonda, known for classics The Grapes of Wrath and 12 Angry Men. Her brother, Peter Fonda, starred in Easy Rider. Born in New York, when Fonda was 12, her mother died. Then Fonda suffered from bulimia, a condition that later affected her a lot. During her lifetime, she’s been through it all-illness, divorce, grief-and survived. She once said, “I’ve spent my life trying to be better and to be everything I can be. That’s what I’ve tried to do in life, and it involves being intentional and staying curious.”
Recently Fonda has put her energy into environmentalism. Inspired by an ecoactivist, she founded Fire Drill Fridays-protests in Washington D. C. She was arrested three times for weeks on end. Grandchildren Malcom and Viva joined her for a campaign of civil disobedience. A year later she published a book—What Can I Do: The Truth About Climate Change and How to Fix It.
This overwhelming desire to put something good back into the world is a self-help mechanism. “If you do something good, it’ll come back to you and make you feel better.”

Tired of a life controlled by their mobile phones, many young people are appealing to extreme measures to kick the bug.
A discussion group called the Screen-Free Project on Douban, now has more than33,000 members, who promise to “quit“ their mobile phone. That generally does not mean they will abandon their phone, but means they will seek to cut down their use of it greatly.
That is a very hard thing to do, particularly when cashless payments are everywhere in China, One way to cut your mobile phone screen time is the mobile phone isolation box. Users simply put their mobile phone in the box and set a time lock that will ban them from having access to the phone for a set time.
Lin Tianqi, a student at Belling Technology and Business University, bought an isolation box recently online. The stickers help remind her of the need to face up to reality.
This summer, Lin says, she will be busy preparing for autumn career recruiting(招聘) and the postgraduate entrance exam. With so much to do, if her mobile phone took up most of her time, it would influence her prospects largely.
Though using a physical box to reduce mobile phone use may not seem so useful. it appears a good thing to the market. However, Liang Wenyu, another college student, looked down at these “useless” attempts. “It is meaningless to use the isolation box, you might as well lock yourself up, as simple as that.” he says, “I can understand why they attach these inspiring stickers on the box-because they lack discipline. Self-disciplined people will succeed without such tricks.”
8. What do the members of the Screen-Free Project intend to do?
A. Get rid of their mobile phones. B. Buy a mobile phone isolation box.
C. Lock their mobile phones in a box. D. Reduce their use of the mobile phones.
9. Why did Lin Tianqi attach the eye-catching stickers to the box?
A. To warn herself to discipline.
B. To remind herself to launch a career.

Growing up, Cassie Holmes was known as “Little Miss Happiness”. A cheerful outlook seemed to come naturally to her — or at least nothing in her life suggested that the word was anything but a sunny place.
Then, just a week before she was to marry her childhood sweetheart, her cellphone rang: her fiance had abruptly decided to call things off. The experience left her ashamed and depressed. “I was confronted with the harsh reality that had things happened,” Ms. Holmes writes. “Feeling this depth of unhappiness forced me to realize that I shouldn’t rely on my preference to experience happiness going forward.”
Ms. Holmes, a social psychologist at UCLA’s Anderson School, was studying exactly how people can make themselves feel better and get through tough situations. In “Happier Hour: Focus on What Matters Most”, she vividly conveys what she has learned from her study. Happiness is a well-covered topic, and so Ms. Holmes has focused her research on how people can spend their time to boost well-being.
One of the first misconceptions she tackles is that more free time is always better. Her analysis of time-use data and well-being finds that people are the happiest with 2 to 5hours of free time per day-a nice reality check for anyone fantasizing (幻想) about quitting a job to move to a tropical island. It is also a comforting statistic for those who, like Ms. Holmes, are raising young kids. Two hours is achievable if 10 is not, and 10, it turns out, may not be better anyway.
Life will always include episodes and events that almost seem to lower our spirits. “Happiness is a choice,” she writes. “How we decide to approach our hours and spend our days determines the happiness we get to enjoy in life.”
12. What are the first two paragraphs intended for?
A. Displaying Holmes’ happy childhood.
B. Describing Holmes’ failed marriage.
C. Showing what sparked Holmes’ study.
D. Making Holmes’ experience known.
13 What does Holmes’ study concentrate on?
A. Physical and mental well-being. B. The harsh reality a person faces.
C. The general concept of happiness. D. A person’s time-related happiness.
14. How does Holmes rate the idea of ”quitting a job to move to a tropical island“?
A. Unbelievable. B. Unacceptable.
C. Appealing. D. Practical.
15. What does the author try to tell us in the last paragraph?
A. Our life is full of ups and downs.
B. Happiness is hard for us to seek.
C. We are the masters of our happiness.
D. Determination is the key to happiness.
【答案】12. C 13. D 14. B 15. C
【解析】

【13题详解】
细节理解题。根据文章第三段“Happiness is a well-covered topic, and so Ms. Holmes has focused her research on how people can spend their time to boost well-being.(幸福是一个被广泛讨论的话题,因此霍姆斯的研究重点是人们如何利用时间来提高幸福感)”可知,霍姆斯的研究重点是人的与时间有关的幸福。故选D项。
【14题详解】

【15题详解】
推理判断题。根据文章最后一段“How we decide to approach our hours and spend our days determines the happiness we get to enjoy in life.(我们如何安排时间,如何度过每一天,决定了我们能在生活中享受到的幸福)”可推知,本段作者想要告诉我们的是:我们是自己幸福的主人。故选C项。

Screen Saver
Rene Compean had hiked the park near his home in Southern California numerous times. But after venturing (敢于去) along a new path last April, the 45-year-old mechanic was lost.
As the day faded into dusk following several hours of aimless wandering, his concern turned to fear. With no flashlight, only a liter of water and a power bar in his backpack, and less than ten percent battery remaining on his cell phone, Compean was unprepared for anything more than the two-hour journey he’d planned.
Compean climbed to a spot, some 7,000 feet above sea level, where he found at least one bar of signal. “SOS. My phone is going to die. I’m lost,” he texted a friend, attaching a photo showing where he was. The shot showed his legs hanging over rocks.
All Compean could do then was wait and hope. The temperature was dropping fast, and the winds were blowing. And he wouldn’t sleep. After spotting two mountain lions and a hear, he spent the night on high alert, keeping a big stick and some sharp rocks beside him in case an animal came close.
Sixty miles away in Ventura County, Ben Kuo was working at home when he read a tweet from the police station, showing a blurry (模糊的) image of a man’s legs. The police search-and-rescue teams had spent the previous night unsuccessfully looking for Compean, so they released the photo to the public, hoping someone might know the location,
Kuo has an unusual hobby. “I have always loved looking for where photos are taken,” he says. He frequently tries to identify where movie scenes, television shows, or commercials were filmed. He’s often successful.
注意:
1.续写词数应为150左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。.
Seeing the blurry image, Kuo pulled up a satellite map on his laptop.

The police of Ventura County arrived on the spot immediately.
________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】 Seeing the blurry image, Kuo pulled up a satellite map on his laptop. The first thing that he noticed in Compean’s photo were patches of greenery. After comparing it to the satellite map, Kuo realized something: “He must be on the south side because there’s not really any green valleys on the north side.” That finding tightened his search, leading him to an area that resembled the terrain in the image. The final step was cross-referencing the original photo with 3-D images of the area from the satellite map. The locations matched! Kuo soon called the police of Ventura County and told them the location.
The police of Ventura County arrived on the spot immediately. Soon, a search-and- rescue team helicopter was in the air, hovering above Compean. After spending 27 hours alone in the wilderness, Compean cried with excitement, “I’m safe!” The police told Compean that his story probably would have ended very differently had a total stranger with strong satellite skills and a sharp eye for detail not taken action. Days later, Compean paid a visit to Kuo, expressing his gratitude to him. He told Kuo, “I owe you my life.”
【解析】

【详解】1.段落续写:

②由第二段首句内容“文图拉县的警察立即赶到了现场。”可知,第二段可描写警察救下Compean以及Compean的感激之情。
