Race walking shares many fitness benefits with running, research shows, while most likely contributing to fewer injuries. It does, however, have its own problem.
Race walkers are conditioned athletes. The longest track and field event at the Summer Olympics is the
50-kilometer race walk, which is about five miles longer than the marathon. But the sport’s rules require that a race walker’s knees stay straight through most of the leg swing and one foot remain in contact ( 接触) with the ground at all times. It’s this strange form that makes race walking such an attractive activity, however, says Jaclyn Norberg, an assistant professor of exercise science at Salem State University in Salem, Mass.

Like running, race walking is physically demanding, she says, According to most calculations, race walkers moving at a pace of six miles per hour would burn about 800 calories(卡路里) per hour, which is approximately twice as many as they would burn walking, although fewer than running, which would probably burn about 1,000

    or more calories per hour.

However, race walking does not pound the body as much as running does, Dr. Norberg says. According to her research, runners hit the ground with as much as four times their body weight per step, while race walkers, who do not leave the ground, create only about 1.4 times their body weight with each step.
As a result, she says, some of the injuries associated with running, such as runner’s knee, are uncommon among race walkers. But the sport’s strange form does place considerable stress on the ankles and hips, so people with a history of such injuries might want to be cautious in adopting the sport. In fact, anyone wishing to try race walking should probably first consult a coach or experienced racer to learn proper technique, she says. It takes some practice.

    21. Why are race walkers conditioned athletes?

    A. They must run long distances. B. They are qualified for the marathon. C. They have to follow special rules. D. They are good at swinging their legs.
    22. What advantage does race walking have over running?

    A. It’s more popular at the Olympics. B. It’s less challenging physically.

    C. It’s more effective in body building. D. It’s less likely to cause knee injuries.

    23. Which word best describes the author’s attitude to race walking?

    A. Skeptical. B. Objective.

    C. Tolerant. D. Conservative.

    B

In the mid-1990s, Tom Bissell taught English as a volunteer in Uzbekistan. He left after seven months, physically broken and having lost his mind. A few years later, still attracted to the country, he returned to Uzbekistan to write an article about the disappearance of the Aral Sea.
His visit, however, ended up involving a lot more than that. Hence this book, Chasing the Sea: Lost Among the Ghosts of Empire in Central Asia, which talks about a road trip from Tashkent to Karakalpakstan, where millions of lives have been destroyed by the slow drying up of the sea. It is the story of an American travelling to a strange land, and of the people he meets on his way: Rustam, his translator, a lovely 24-year-old who picked up his colorful English in California, Oleg and Natasha, his hosts in Tashkent, and a string of foreign aid workers.
This is a quick look at life in Uzbekistan, made of friendliness and warmth, but also its darker side of society. In Samarkand, Mr Bissell admires the architectural wonders, while on his way to Bukhara he gets a taste of police
methods when suspected of drug dealing. In Ferghana, he attends a mountain funeral(葬礼)followed by a strange

drinking party. And in Karakalpakstan, he is saddened by the dust storms, diseases and fishing boats stuck miles from the sea.
Mr Bissell skillfully organizes historical insights and cultural references, making his tale a well-rounded picture of Uzbekistan, seen from Western eyes. His judgment and references are decidedly American, as well as

his delicate stomach. As the author explains, this is neither a travel nor a history book, or even a piece of reportage. Whatever it is, the result is a fine and vivid description of the purest of Central Asian traditions.

    24. What made Mr Bissell return to Uzbekistan?

    A. His friends' invitation. B. His interest in the country. C. His love for teaching. D. His desire to regain health.
    25. What does the underlined word “that” in paragraph 2 refer to? A Developing a serious mental disease.
    B. Taking a guided tour in Central Asia. C. Working as a volunteer in Uzbekistan. D. Writing an article about the Aral Sea.
    26. Which of the following best describes Mr Bissell's road trip in Uzbekistan?

    A. Romantic. B. Eventful. C. Pleasant. D. Dangerous.

    27. What is the purpose of this text?

    A. To introduce a book. B. To explain a cultural phenomenon. C. To remember a writer. D. To recommend a travel destination.

    C

A team from the University of Tokyo just published a new study that says that writing on paper is actually the best for your mind. “Paper is more advanced and useful compared to electronic records because paper contains more one-of-a-kind information for stronger memory recall,” said Professor Kuniyoshi L. Sakai, a neuroscientist
at the University of Tokyo and author in the study.

Most people like smartphones or tablets because they seem to make everyday tasks easier, but after gathering
48 volunteers between the ages of 18 and 29 for the study, the researchers found that those who wrote on paper to finish note-taking tasks completed these 25 percent faster than people who used smartphones or tablets. What is the reason? The team said that using paper gave the volunteers more of a chance to write in their own form, while digital devices are more consistent

The researchers divided the volunteers, including college students and office staff, into three groups depending on their memory, preferences for using paper or digital tools, sex and age. Then each volunteer read a conversation that highlighted characters explaining their plans, which mentioned what they wanted to do in two months, their 14 different class times, the deadlines for the characters' homework, and any other things. After using their paper or a device to take notes about this conversation, the volunteers were given an hour break and at ask to keep them from thinking directly about the study. They were then asked a number of questions like “What are the deadlines for the characters’ homework?”
Those who used paper for notetaking took only 11 minutes to jot down their thoughts during the study, while people who used tablets took 14 minutes; smartphone users spent the most time on the task, taking 16 minutes to

write down their thoughts. As for the accuracy of the answers, those writing on paper seemed to stand out. This suggested that writing on paper benefited their memory.

    28. Why did the volunteers writing on paper finish note-taking tasks faster?

    A. Their tasks were less difficult. B. They took notes without any stops. C. They could write in their unique ways. D.Their writing styles were consistent.
    29. What were the volunteers required to do in the study?

    A. Make up some conversations. B. Raise questions for each other.

    C. Take notes about a conversation. D. Discuss notes with group members.

    30. Why were the volunteers asked to answer questions after a break? A.To ensure the accuracy. B. To test their memory.
    C. To keep them energetic D. To remove their thoughts.

    31. What does the underlined phrase “jot down” in the last paragraph probably mean?

    A. Leave out. B. Break down. C. Write down. D. Concentrate on.

    D

If you’re tired and find yourself with that rare spare chunk of time, should you be using it to swing kettle bells or get more sleep? It’s a question most people have faced. Who isn’t a little sleep-deprived (被剥夺
Who doesn’t need more exercise? Who has time for both?

The answer is a bit complicated. Obviously, both sleep and exercise are vital, and ideally, adults should make time for both. Getting the recommended seven hours a night is important for metabolic (新陈代谢的) function, weight regulation and brain health. Inadequate amount or quality of sleep is associated with both short-and
long-term poor health measures, increasing the risk for heart disease, memory problems, etc. Consistent physical exercise yields similar benefits and, just like not getting enough sleep, failing to exercise can have serious health consequences. Exercise can improve deep sleep, and sleeping better enhanced the ability to exercise the next day.
Because both are so critical for health, medical experts hesitate to say one is more important than the other. However, there is a key differentiator (区分点) between the two: “We have a biological need to sleep — it’s a behavior we must do every day,” says Christopher. “Physical activity, on the other hand, is definitely beneficial for
health, but being less active for a few days here and there doesn’t have the same negative health impact as having stall sleep for days.” In other words, skipping workouts, while not ideal, won’t stop you from operating, whereas being sleep deprived definitely will. Too little sleep or poor-quality sleep can impact mood, and increase anxiety and depression symptoms.
In order to stay somewhat active without sacrificing sleep, the trick may be to look for non-traditional ways to get physical activity. Washing dishes, making beds, keeping the kid in their baby carriage and going for a quick jog—it all counts, and none of it requires skipping sleep.

    32. What’s the first paragraph mainly about?

    A. Tips on how to balance exercise and sleep. B. The ways to get more sleep instead of exercise. C. The relationship between sleep and workout D. A common problem that occurs in daily life.
    33. According to the passage, what risk may adults face if they lack enough sleep? A. Hair loss. B. Lung cancer. C. Heart failure. D. Total blindness.
    34. What can be inferred from paragraph 3? A. Workouts matter more than enough sleep.
B.Sleeping too little for long can surely cause consequences. C. More physical activities can lead to health problems
    D. Being less active for long has more negative impact than lack of sleep.

    35. Which of the following seems to be favored by the author?

    A. Getting enough exercise before sleeping. B. Giving up sleep to go for a quick jog.
    C. Working out by doing housework. D. Leaving the baby alone in their baby carriage.

Children played in the yards along the block. I waved to them as I walked by, delivering mail at houses along the way. It was just an ordinary Thursday afternoon.
There were only about 700 people on my route. Over the years, I had gotten to know most of them, if not in person then by their mail. Mrs. Dorman at the end of my route got a package from the Home Shopping Network

almost every day. She was an old lady, living alone and I liked being able to bring a little joy into her life with my delivery.
Some mailmen preferred routes where they drove a truck and slipped the mail into a collection of mailboxes without seeing anyone face to face. Not me. I wanted to be outside talking to people.
To be honest, there wasn’t much excitement on a local postal route like mine. Except a sudden rainstorm or a holiday, every day was pretty much the same. But I knew I provided an important service in my job. College acceptances, birthday presents, postcards from all corners of the world——they could all make someone’s day.
I dug in my bag for Mrs. Dorman’s mail——the Home Shopping Network package. She would be glad to get this, whatever it was. Mrs. Dorman often waited for me at the door and we always had a nice talk.
Mrs. Dorman wasn’t at the door today, but I heard the TV going inside, so I knew she was home. Probably watching her shopping shows, I thought. I bent down to put her package by the door.
I froze. What was that? Something like a weak cry. I leaned closer to the door. Maybe the sound came from the TV? “Mrs. Dorman?” I called. No answer. And then the same weak cry. I tried to open the door, but it was locked. So I pressed my ear against it.

    注意:
    1. 续写词数应为 150 左右;
    2. 请按如下格式作答。

This time I clearly heard the words, “Help me!”

“What had happened that day?” I asked Mrs. Dorman after she came back home from the hospital.

After we get out of the hall, our first stop will be to the Egyptian section above us. This one has our oldest art in it. Next, I will take you to the Asian art and ancient objects to the left. This is my favorite section, because each piece has a wonderful story. The tour’s last part will be European 1600’s section. We have borrowed some of those items from the National Museum! The first thing you should notice is the writing below each piece. I will be speaking about most things, but you can also check the information there. No photo is to be taken here, so please turn off your cameras. Most importantly, please do not touch any of the art! The oils on your hands will damage these ancient objects!

根据第二段“But the sport’s rules require that a race walker’s knees stay straight through most of the leg swing and one foot remain in contact with the ground at all times.”
根据最后一段“As a result, she says, some of the injuries associated with running, such as runner’s knee, are uncommon among race walkers.”
Norberg说的话“In fact, anyone wishing to try race walking should probably first consult a coach
B 25. D 26. B 27. A
A few years later, still attracted to the country. he returned to Uzbekistan to write an article about the disappearance of the Ara Sea”可知,几年后,Bissell仍然被这个国家所吸引。
A few years later, still attracted to the country, he returned to Uzbekistan to write an article about the disappearance of the Aral Sea(几年后,仍然被这个国家所吸引。
This is a quick look at life in Uzbekistan, made of friendliness and warmth, but also its darker side of society. In Samarkand, Mr Bissell admires the architectural wonders, while on his way to Bukhara he gets a taste of police methods when suspected of drug dealing. In Ferghana, he attends a mountain funeral(葬礼)followed by a strange drinking party. And in Karakalpakstan, he is saddened by the dust storms, diseases and fishing boats stuck miles from the sea.”
故选A。
C 29. C 30. B 31. C
根据第二段中“The team said that using paper gave the volunteers more of a chance to write in their own form, while digital devices are more consistent”(研究小组表示,使用纸张让志愿者有更多的机会以自己的形式书写,而数字设备的书写形式则始终如一。) 所以“They could write in their unique ways.”(他们可以用自己独特的方式写作。)
根据第三段中“After using their paper or a device to take notes about this conversation, the volunteers were given an hour break and at ask to keep them from thinking directly about the study. ”(在用他们的纸或设备记录下这段对话后,志愿者们被要求休息一小时,以防止他们直接想到这项研究。)可知,志愿者们被要求记录下一段对话。所以“Take notes about a conversation.”(对谈话做记录。)
根据最后一段“Those who used paper for notetaking took only 11 minutes to jot down their thoughts during the study, while people who used tablets took 14 minutes; smartphone users spent the most time on the task, taking 16 minutes to write down their thoughts. As for the accuracy of the answers, those writing on paper seemed to stand out. This suggested that writing on paper benefited their memory. ”(在研究过程中,用纸做笔记的人只花了11分钟记下自己的想法,而用平板电脑的人花了14分钟;智能手机用户花在这项任务上的时间最多,他们花16分钟写下自己的想法。至于答案的准确性,那些写在纸上的答案似乎很突出。这表明在纸上写字有助于他们的记忆力。)可知,在纸上写下后,记忆是最深刻的;因此志愿者们被要求休息一个小时之后,才开始回答问题的目的就是为了检测他们的记忆力。所以“To test their memory.”(为了测试他们的记忆力。)
根据最后一段中“smartphone users spent the most time on the task, taking 16 minutes to write down their thoughts.”(智能手机用户花在这项任务上的时间最多,他们花16分钟写下自己的想法。)
根据第一段内容“If you’re tired and find yourself with that rare spare chunk of time, should you he using it to swing keittlcbells or get more sleep? It’s a question most people have faced. Who isn’t a little sleep-deprived (被剥夺的) ?Who doesn’t need more exercise? Who has time for both?(如果你累了,发现自己有一段难得的空闲时间,你是应该用它来荡秋千,还是多睡一会儿?这是大多数人都面临过的问题。谁不缺点睡眠?谁不需要多运动?谁有时间做这两件事呢?)”可知,本段讲述了一些比较普遍存在的问题,是人们在目常生活中常遇到的,故选D。
    33. 细节理解题。根据第二段中“Inadequate amount or quality of sleep is associated with both short-and long-term poor health measures, increasing the risk for heart disease, memory problems, etc.(睡眠时间或质量不足都与短期和长期的健康状况不佳有关,会增加患心脏病、记忆力问题等的风险。)”
根据文章第三段内容“'Physical activity, on the other hand, is definitely beneficial for health, but being less active for a few days here and there doesn’t have the same negative health impact as having stall sleep for days.' In other words, skipping workouts, while not ideal, won’t stop you from operating, whereas being sleep deprived definitely will. Too little sleep or poor-quality sleep can impact mood, au d increase anxiety and depression symptoms.(“另一方面,体育活动肯定对健康很有益,但几天不那么活跃,对健康没有像几天睡眠停滞那样的负面影响。”
从文章最后一段“In order to stay somewhat active without sacrificing sleep, the trick may be to look for non-traditional ways to get physical activity. Washing dishes, making beds, keeping the kid in their baby carriage and going for a quick jog—it all counts, and none of it requires skipping sleep.(为了在不牺牲睡眠的情况下保持活跃,诀窍可能是寻找非传统的锻炼方式。洗碗、铺床、把孩子放在婴儿车里、去慢跑——所有这些都很重要,它们都要求不睡觉。)”可知,作者讲到一些在不牺牲睡眠时间的情况下,进行适当锻炼的好方法,比如洗碗,铺床等,因此作者提倡可以通过做一些家务达到锻炼的目的,故选C。

    读后续写【答案】One possible version:
This time I clearly heard the words, “Help me!” A chill of horror suddenly sweeping over me, I was hit by a terrible idea——Mrs. Dorman might be in danger! Taking a deep breath, I kept pushing against the door without the slightest hesitation until the latch finally broke. Forcing the door open, I was startled to find Mrs. Dorman lying under the cupboard, moaning in pain. The moment Mrs. Dorman noticed my approach, her pale face lit up, as if seizing a glimmer of hope. Then the next few minutes saw me move the cupboard with all my might, cautiously help her sit on the sofa and call the ambulance promptly. A while later, the doctors arrived, rushing Mrs. Dorman to the hospital for a complete check-up.
“What had happened that day?” I asked Mrs. Dorman after she came back home from the hospital. Mrs. Dorman explained that she was watching TV when she suddenly lost her balance. At that critical moment, she managed to grab the cupboard, but unfortunately, it came down on top of her. Much to my relief, Mrs. Dorman was fine except a pain in her shoulder. However, thoughts flashing back to that horrible moment, I felt my heart was still fluttering with fear, “Do you know what I was thinking when I was lying under the cupboard?” Mrs. Dorman asked me. I shook my head. “I didn’t get into a panic. I knew you would come just like you do every day. That’s what gave me comfort,” she uttered, her eyes twinkling with grateful tears and a smile spreading across her wrinkled face.
