When the sculptor Auguste Rodin was young, he had difficulty learning to read and write. His father said of him, “I have an idiot for a son.” His uncle agreed. “He’s uneducable,” he said. What if Rodin had doubted his ability?

What if these people had listened and become discouraged?
What would our world be without the music of Beethoven, the art of Rodin or the ideas of Albert Einstein and Thomas Edison?

(2022春·河北张家口·高一统考期中)We all know that it’s good to be kind to others. But what does that mean for us? What acts of kindness will make us happiest and who will benefit the most? A new review of kindness research provides some answers.
Researchers analyzed the results from 126 research articles looking at almost 200, 000 participants from around the world. The studies they chose all had to meet certain criteria, such as including only adults and reporting good statistical data. Some were experiments while others just surveyed people about how kind and happy they were. The studies measured well-being in many ways, including both mental and physical health.
As expected, people who were kind tended to have higher well-being. Although the relationship was not, stronger than it was, lead researcher Bryant Hui was still encouraged by the result. “Although the relationship is weaker, the effect still has a significant impact,” he says.
He and his colleagues considered when kindness might have a bigger impact on our well-being. One thing they found was that people who performed random, informal acts of kindness tended to be happier than people who performed more formal acts of kindness. It’s possible that informal helping may fill our more basic psychological needs for close relationships, which is why it could lead to greater happiness.
The researchers also found that people who were kind tended to have a higher sense of meaning and purpose in life. Perhaps this makes sense, given that being kind involves effort which makes people feel confident about themselves and their abilities. And that provides a sense of meaning.
28.What is the text mainly about?
A.Act of kindness makes us happiest.
B.Being kind makes us healthy and happy.
C.Random acts of kindness are better than formal ones.
D.Doing act of kindness to others improves our abilities.
29.How did the researchers get the finding?
A.By doing surveys. B.By carrying out experiments.
C.By comparing research data. D.By analyzing results of articles.
30.Why does being kind give people a sense of meaning and purpose in life?
A.Because it makes people healthier. B.Because it boosts close relationships.
C.Because it improves people’s confidence. D.Because it promotes awareness of responsibility.
31.Where is the text most likely from?
A.A diary. B.A guide book. C.A novel. D.A magazine.

Get Digital Scotland, Simon Community Scotland’s digital inclusion programme, is proud to announce the start of Get Connected 100! This is a Scotland-wide project giving 100 people experiencing homelessness access to the digital world.
Our Get Connected 100 project will connect and support 100 people to get online. Each participant (参与者) will receive a free digital device (设备) and unlimited connectivity for 12 months. In addition to free digital technology, frontline workers at Simon Community and in our partner organisations are trained as digital champions to provide person-centred support based around a digital skills learning framework (框架). The project will give people easy access at all times, right in their pocket, and support to build skills and confidence to get online.
Research from the University of the West of Scotland shows us that people who experience homelessness are among the most digitally excluded (排斥的) groups in our society. This is a great disadvantage in life which has been worsened by the COVID-19 pandemic. Due to COVID-19 we depend even more heavily on digital technology for many daily activities: socialising with friends, managing finances (资金), getting the latest news, accessing health services and having fun. Digital technology has never been so important to our lives.
The project is being funded by the Scottish Government. Housing Minister Kevin Stewart said: “I am glad to fund this project to support 100 people experiencing homelessness in getting connected to the digital world. The COVID-19 pandemic has shown us that access to digital equipment, data and skills is a basic necessity. The funding, as part of our £100 million winter support package, will certainly help people deal with the additional financial pressures of winter and COVID-19.”
Last year, Simon Community Scotland funded a “Get Connected Pilot” in Edinburgh to develop and test this approach. We wanted to make sure people facing loneliness during lockdown could get support and be connected with loved ones and professional services. The results for the people who were part of the pilot were life changing. 100% of participants said that getting a connected device and support through this pilot positively affected their lives. Our pilot showed that digital access opens up a whole world of opportunities!
32.What will the Get Connected 100 project provide?
A.Costless digital devices. B.Improved broadband access.
C.Lifelong unlimited connectivity. D.Training in communication skills.
33.What is paragraph 3 mainly about?
A.How digital technology has changed our life. B.Where digital technology will lead us.
C.Who the project will benefit most. D.Why the project is needed.
34.How does Kevin Stewart sound in paragraph 4?
A.Curious. B.Carefree. C.Confused. D.Confident.
35.What can we learn about the Get Connected 100 project from the last paragraph?
A.It is sure to be successful. B.It needs some improvements.
C.It will spread all over the world. D.It has made a powerful difference.

(2022春·山东·高一期中统考)Everyone in my drama class saw the paper in my hands shaking when I stood up to try out for a lead role in the yearly school Thanksgiving play. I was there because the teacher wanted everyone to try out for a part.
Being shy and not confident, I began nervously reading the part for the main character, Star. She had no parents. Feeling so sorry for her, I finished reading.
Later when reading the name list, the teacher looked at me and announced, “Patty, you play Star. Come and get your script (剧本).”I was shocked. Jim, an excellent boy, was playing the other lead.To learn my lines, I practiced every day and finally memorized them. I became more confident and happier.
Then we started practising acting. Jim played the character, a Scrooge (吝啬鬼), who is unwilling to put a candle in his window so that the light will show passers-by the slippery ice on the path below. On the Thanksgiving day, Star comes along, falls on the ice and gets injured.
Finally feeling bad, the Scrooge helps her up. To thank him, Star kisses his hand.
One day, before our drama class started, I saw a terrible drawing of me on the blackboard with words: Falling Star. I was laughed at by someone.
The teacher asked,“Who did this?” Nobody knew. We started rehearsing (排练), but my heart wasn’t in it. The teacher told me not to care about the silly trick; it wouldn’t happen again. But I was sad and anxious, wanting to quit. Finally I moved on and continually worked hard for the play.
Soon it was the day before the show. It was time for the dress rehearsal. I was excited. Everything went smoothly at the dress rehearsal until the scene where I slipped on the ice and the Scrooge helped me up.
When I kissed his hand, a terrible noise and laughter sounded from behind the set. I quickly left the stage and hurried into an empty room. With tears, I said, “I can’t do it. Please get someone else!”

【参考答案】
Suddenly, I felt a gentle hand on my shoulder. I heard voices and a warm hand took mine. I looked up and saw concerned faces. Jim and several other classmates had come after me. “Please, don’t drop out...” they said and tried to comfort me. Later, the teacher found the troublemaker Peter, who loved making silly tricks. And he apologized to me. Encouraged by my friendly teacher and so many kind classmates, I went back onstage and finished the scene with no further interruptions.
The following Thanksgiving day, we were ready for the play. Throughout the performance, we could hear laughter from the audience from time to time. When the performance was over, they gave us a big round of applause. In the following weeks, schoolmates often came up to say, “You were good!” I was glad my hard work and determination as well as many people’s support had helped me to perform successfully. It positively shaped my later life.
