Parts of Africa are covered by a dark cloud. But this is no rain cloud. It is a living cloud made of billions of locusts (蝗虫) that are traveling across the continent eating everything in their path.
And now in the battle to stop this disaster, a radio station in Senegal, West Africa, is offering listeners 50 kilograms of rice if they can catch and kill 50 kilograms of locusts. “We think this idea will get more people to take part in the war on the locusts. ” said Abdoulaye Ba, from Sud-Fm, a radio station in one of Senegal’s worst affected area.
This is West Africa’s biggest locust disaster in 15 years, and it is moving east, causing huge damage to crops. As they move they produce young and increase their number and will soon threaten (威胁) Sudan in the northeast of Africa. Some say it could reach Asia. Experts say the harmful effect on crops in areas already suffering from food shortage and war could cause many people to go hungry. Governments in the areas are not well equipped to fight the pest.
Although leaders of 12 countries have agreed on a plan, it is not expected to be enough. “We are now treating 6, 000 hectares (公顷) per day with pesticide (杀虫剂), but we need to treat 20, 000 hectares per day in order to have any hope of controlling this disaster, ”said Mohamed Abdallahi Ould Babah, director of locust control in Mauritania.
Requests are being made for international aid, which is only way to limit the disaster, the UN’s Food and Agriculture Organization warned.

Last year, the bushfires in Australia burned more than 12. 35 million acres of land. At least 25 people were killed and 2000 homes destroyed. According to the BBC, that was the most casualties(伤亡) from wildfires in the country since 2009. The University of Sydney estimates that 480 million animals have died in South Wales alone.
Zeke Hausfather, an energy systems analyst and climate researcher at Berkeley Earth, said warmer temperatures and extreme weather made Australia more susceptible to fires and increased the length of the fire season. “The drier conditions combined with record high temperatures in 2019 created main conditions for the disastrous fires. Australia’s fires were worsened by the combination of those two. 2019 was the perfect storm for being the warmest year on record for Australia and the driest year on record for Australia, ” Hausfather added on Friday.
Kevin Trenberth, a senior scientist at the US National Center for Atmospheric Research, said warmer ocean temperatures are also contributed to more variable weather around the world. Trenberth believes that global warming contributed to energy imbalances and hot spots in the oceans, which can create a wave in the atmosphere that locks weather patterns in places, causing longer rain events in Indonesia, for example, and at the same time contributing to drought in Australia. He said that once an area experiences drought conditions for two months or more, it increases the risk of fires catching and spreading. Those changing weather patterns due to global warming make drought events longer.
Climate experts stress that climate change is not the only factor in the severity(严重) of wildfires. How land is managed can also impact the amount of fuel available for fires. Practices like controlled bums and other factors can impact the risk to people and property, such as warning systems and the type of development in a given area. Changing those policies has great potential to limit future damage from wildfires along with changes to how fire management resources are dispatched(派遣).
    28. What are the numbers about in Paragraph 1?
    A. The causes of Australian fires.
    B. The results of Australian fires.
    C. The damaged areas of Australian fires.
    D. The property destruction of Australian fires.

    A. Very quickly to adapt to.
    B. Very seriously to focus on.
    C. Very likely to be influenced by.
    D. Very easily to be protected against.
    30. What can we infer from Trenberth’s research?
    A. Longer dry weather contributes to global warming.
    B. Global warming is also a main cause of the bushfires.
    C. Warmer ocean temperatures leads to the fires directly.
    D. The imbalanced energy leads to the temperature rising.
    31. What does the author intend to do in the last paragraph?
    A. To stress the effects of Australia fires.
    B. To show the methods for land management.
    C. To predict the seriousness of Australia fires.
    D. To provide some advice about reducing fire damage.
    D
    Time Travel
If you could travel in time, where would you go? Perhaps you would watch a performance of a Shakespeare’s play in Elizabethan England? What about hanging out with Laozi in the Spring and Autumn Period? Or maybe you’d voyage far ahead of the present day to see what the future holds.
The possibility of time travel is indeed appealing. Stories exploring the subject have been around for hundreds of years. Perhaps the best known example is science fiction novel The Time Machine, which was written by H. G. Wells and published in 1895 for the first time. It was adapted into at least two feature films of the same name, as well as two television versions, and a large number of comic book adaptations. It is generally credited with the popularization of the concept of time travel using a vehicle that allows an operator to travel purposefully and selectively. The term “time machine”, coined by Wells, is now universally used to refer to a vehicle transporting people into the far future.
But could time travel actually be possible? Some scientists say yes, in theory. They propose using cracks in time and space called “wormholes”, which could be used as shortcuts to other periods. Einstein’s theory of relativity allows time travel in extreme circumstances. And British physicist Stephen Hawking says you could travel into the future with a really fast spaceship going at nearly the speed of light. Though building such a spaceship would of course be no simple task.
Even if you could travel into the past, there is something called the “grandfather paradox”. It asks what would happen if a time traveler were to go back in time and have his own grandfather killed for some reasons, and therefore prevent himself from being born. If the time traveler wasn’t born, how would he travel back in time?
And would you really like to visit the future? In H. G. Wells’ book, the main character travels into distant time where he arrives at a beach and is attacked by giant crabs. He then voyages 30 million years into the future where the only living thing is a black object with tentacles(触角).
If that’s what’s in store, maybe we are better just living in the present day after all.
    32. The novel The Time Machine mentioned in Paragraph 2 aims to show .
    A. the long history of time travel
    B. the contribution of H. G. Wells
    C. people’s interest in time travel
    D. the story’s different features
    33. Which of the following statements is TRUE?
    A. The Time Machine is one of the best selling science fiction novels.
    B. It was H. G. Wells who invented the term “time machine”.
    C. Works of Literature about time travel first appeared one hundred years ago.
    D. There are films, comic books and dramas adapted from the novel The Time Machine.
    34. What can we know about Einstein’s and Hawking’s theories from Paragraph 3?
    A. They have similarities because both are based on experiments.
    B. They suggest the possibility of time travel.
    C. They have been proved wrong by some time travelers.
    D. They have pushed the invention of the first spaceship.
    来。由此可知, 霍金和爱因斯坦的理论表明了时间旅行的可能性。故选B。
    35. What does “grandfather paradox”in Paragraph 4 probably refer to?
    A. The reunion of the traveler and his grandfather brings happiness.
    B. The traveler is prevented from meeting his grandfather.
    C. The traveler goes back in time to seek for his grandfather.
    D. The grandfather’s death makes the traveler’s birth impossible.

How to Deal with Being Indoors During an Earthquake
Would you know what to do if you are indoors during an earthquake? 36
Stay indoors. Do not move outside. Many modern buildings made of RCC (Reinforced Cement Concrete) are designed to withstand moderate earthquakes and are actually quite safe. 37 . Going outside is dangerous when people get injured from things falling off the building or other buildings.
38 . Drop before the earthquake drops you. Use the “Drop, Cover and Hold” method—drop onto the ground, take cover under a strong and sturdy object and cover your head with your hands and arms. Hold onto whatever you might be underneath, because if it starts to move, you’ll want to make sure that you’re moving with it.
Get under something heavy. 39 If possible, get under something heavy like a desk or table. Cover your head. Get down low and make sure that you are protected from things that might be falling in your home.
Find other supports if you cannot shelter under something. If you’re not able to get under a table or other forms of protection, get next to an interior wall. Make yourself as small as possible. Cover your head and protect yourself while the shaking is going on.
Stay in bed if you are there already. If an earthquake starts while you are in bed, the best thing is to stay there. Cover your head and neck with your pillow and ride out the shaking. 40 It has been reported that people who get out of bed during an earthquake are more likely to be injured as they may step on broken glass.
    A. Drop onto the ground.
    B. Find a heavy desk quickly.
    C. Earthquakes lead to many disasters.
    D. Do not get out of bed until the shaking stops.
    E. This simple how-to will bring you up to speed quickly.
    F. It is unlikely that you will be able to walk during an earthquake.
    G. Steps and lifts are actually more dangerous than staying indoors.
