(2022·青海·大通回族土族自治县教学研究室三模)Don’t ask astronomers to choose between the old Hubble Space Telescope and the new James Webb Space Telescope. “Comparing Hubble and Webb is like asking if you will love your second child as much as your first one,” said Susan Mullally, a scientist at the Space Telescope Science Institute in Baltimore. They are very different but equally loved.
Webb is expected to detect light from the universe’s first stars, beyond Hubble’s range. This light will show how the original stars looked 13.7 billion years ago. Hubble has stared as far back as 13.4 billion years, discovering the oldest and farthest object ever observed. Astronomers are eager to close the 300 million year gap with Webb and draw ever closer in time to the Big Bang, the moment the universe formed 13.8 billion years ago. “It’s like looking at the picture book of our kids and missing the first two years. We are trying to figure out where they come from,” explained NASA’s chief scientist Thomas Zurbuchen.
Hubble sees what we see, with a little ultraviolet and infrared thrown in. Webb has infrared vision. That’s why Webb needs to run at -240℃. To stay cold, Webb carries a five-layer shelter to keep it from sunlight. Between each layer of the shelter, whose size is as big as a tennis court, there is a gap so heat can escape out the sides.
To detect the universe’s first and darkening stars, Webb requires the largest mirror ever made for astronomy. The mirror spans more than 6.5 meters, yet is lighter than Hubble’s, which is 2.4 meters across. The mirror consists of 18 smaller pieces, each of which is the size of a coffee table and coated with very thin gold, an ideal reflector of infrared light.
Hubble circles 530 kilometers above the earth. Webb is 1.6 million kilometers away at what’s called the second Lagrange point (L2). This is where the gravitational forces of the earth and the sun balance, requiring minimal fuel for a spacecraft to stay there. Webb will constantly face the night side of Earth as the spacecraft and planet run around the sun in unison (同步).
4.What does Thomas Zurbuchen mean?
A.Webb will help scientists see the Big Bang. B.He wants to find some of his kids’ pictures.
C.New space telescopes are better than old ones. D.Webb might detect the light of the first stars.
5.What is paragraph 4 mainly about?
A.The distance Webb can see. B.The type of shelters Webb has.
C.The unique mirror Webb carries. D.The position Webb is put in.
6.Why is Webb put at the second Lagrange point?
A.It is the coldest area in the universe. B.It is the darkest position above the earth.
C.It is the farthest place any spaceship can reach. D.It requires the least fuel for Webb to work normally.
7.Which of the following is a suitable title for the text?
A.Differences Between Hubble and Webb B.Problems With Hubble Space Telescope
C.Advantages of Infrared Space Telescopes D.Rapid Development of Space Telescopes

(2022·青海·大通回族土族自治县教学研究室三模)Scientists at the University of Minnesota report Thursday in the journal Science that about a third of all food grown around the world never gets eaten. In terms of calories per person, cutting food waste is more of an immediate opportunity to feed more people than increasing crop yields around the world.
“But not all these calories are equal, when you look at how they hurt the global food supply,” says Paul West, who led the study. “Throwing away a pound of boneless beef effectively wastes 24 times more calories than discarding a pound of wheat. If you throw out some cabbage at a fancy restaurant in upstate New York, it doesn’t have much impact on the world’s food system. But throwing out a small steak has a huge impact—maybe more than all the cabbage in the restaurant put together. Wasting other animal products, such as chicken, eggs and dairy, has less effect on the global food supply than beef, but still more than vegetables and grains.
The US, China and India together throw out enough food each year to feed more than 400 million people, the team found. And the biggest global contributor to that loss is the US. Each day the average Americans waste up to about 1,200 calories per person. They throw out 290 effective calories from beef. They also waste about 550 calories from chicken and pork.
On the other side, India wastes the least amount of food and meat of the three countries. Each Indian, on average, effectively throws out about 44 calories a day, mostly rice and wheat.
China falls between the US and India. Each Chinese person wastes about 280 calories of wheat and rice every day. But the Chinese also love pork and each person effectively tosses 200 calories from pork each day. “The food service industry in China has really high amounts of waste,” West says. “It’s a cultural standard for them to order seven to nine dishes in restaurants to honor the guests. All that food doesn’t get eaten.”
8.What is the most direct way to feed more people in the world?
A.Reducing food waste. B.Eating less than necessary.
C.Growing more crops. D.Replacing grain with meat.
9.What does the underlined word “discarding” in paragraph 2 mean?
A.Eating. B.Buying. C.Wasting. D.Donating.
10.Which country is the most wasteful in the world?
A.India. B.The US. C.The UK. D.China.
11.What message does West seem to convey in the last paragraph?
A.China should adopt Western food culture. B.The number of dishes should be limited by law.
C.Chinese people should eat more wheat and rice. D.Food waste in Chinese restaurants is very serious.

(2022·湖南·长沙一中模拟预测)A study has shown how ecotourism in the Philippines has transformed people’s attitudes towards marine(海洋的) conservation.
Researchers from the University of Victoria in Canada and other institutes in Philippines, visited three sites where tourists pay to swim with whale sharks in the wild. They interviewed a range of locals in Oslob, Donsol and Pintuyan, including fishers and ex-whale shark hunters. At Oslob, the largest of the three sites, people were more likely to speak about the resulting improvements to their quality of life and an increase in job opportunities. At the smaller, less profitable sites, responses were more likely to be about the changes in. how people behaved towards the sharks.
Dr. Jackie Ziegler, who led the team from the university’s Marine Protected Areas Research Group, said, “Many of the people we spoke to reported they now care about and value whale sharks because of tourism activities. They also expressed the community’s emotional connection to the species and the strong need to protect them. Before the introduction of tourist activities, most of the locals admitted to harming the sharks by hitting them with stones, harpoons, paddles, dynamite or riding them.” In terms of attitudes towards the wider marine environment, the majority of respondents now actively encourage others to care for the ocean and they also use more sustainable(可持续的) fishing practices.
The study also acknowledged the potential negative effects of tourism on the marine environment, such as impacts on the health of local coral reefs and of the sharks. It concluded that further studies were needed to assess these impacts before firm conclusions could be drawn regarding the positive impact of whale shark tourism on ocean conservation.
Nevertheless, the researchers say their work suggests ecotourism can be an effective means of strengthening protection. “It was fascinating to hear the importance so many local Filipino communities place on whale shark tourism. Bringing in the views of the local tour operators to the study was imperative(必要的) in uncovering the true impact of whale shark tourism and the wider benefits to ocean conservation in the Philippines,” Dr Ziegler added.
12.What do the local people concerned least according to Paragraph 2?
A.Improvements of life. B.Behaviors towards sharks.
C.Increases of work chances. D.Relationships between people.
13.Which word can best describe locals’ action towards marine life before ecotourism?
A.Protective. B.Satisfying.
C.Unsustainable. D.Beneficial.
14.What will be the focus of the future research on tourism?
A.Influences on the health of other marine species.
B.Strategies for carrying out marine ecotourism.
C.A mounts of benefits from ocean conservation.
D.Importance of protecting the local whale sharks.
15.What may be the best title of the text?
A.Ecotourism Has Brought Large Benefits to People
B.Ecotourism Does Much Good to Marine Life as Before
C.Marine ecotourism Gives Rise to a New Kind of Business
D.Ecotourism Transforms Locals’ Attitudes to Marine Conservation

(2022·内蒙古·满洲里市第一中学高二期末)According to the Federal Trade Commission, nearly $5 billion has been lost to online shopping scams(诈骗)in the first nine months of 2021.
“ ____16____ Often, these offers will more likely than not download some unwanted software onto your device rather than give you a good deal,” says Daniel Markuson, a digital privacy specialist. Here are some tips on how to avoid being scammed while shopping online.
Stick to “ https” websites. As a means of security, it’s important to visit and shop on sites that use “https”. The “s” stands for “secure”. While “https” isn’t everything when it comes to security, it definitely provides a level of protection. ____17____ You simply look at the URL bar( 网址栏 ) to see if it begins with “https://” the way it does on our website.
Check that the URL is right. It sounds simplistic. ____18____ Making sure you’re on the right online store could be the difference between entering your card details on “ Nike.com” and “ n1ke.com”. This small difference in URLs leaves a huge opportunity for scammers to land you on a malicious(恶意的) website.
____19____ It’s generally best to avoid shopping online using public Wi-Fi networks because public Wi-Fi typically exhibits poor security and is often scanned by hackers(黑客).
Additionally, it’s always wise to practice good password security. Generally, websites shouldn’t ask for your personal ID number or your password to another site to sell you something. ____20____
A.Not all shortened URLs are bad.
B.Avoid shopping on public Wi-Fi.
C.Public computers are another insecure way to shop.
D.Checking whether or not a site uses “https” is easy to do.
E.If they do this , you are probably at risk of being scammed.
F.Don’t be too quick to jump at seemingly-too-good-to-be true offers.
G.However, it’s important to do this before entering personal information.

There are many things in senior middle school that I still remember clearly. I studied three years in a country school, which is faraway. However, it has a good environment and strict but kind teachers, so I loved the school and all my teachers very much. One Friday, just as we began to read books in reading class at our desks, our teacher, Mrs. Hill, said that she needed to be out of the classroom for a few minutes. She asked the class to read in silence while she was gone. And she said that those who didn’t read books in silence would have to answer to her when she returned. It was well-known that Mrs. Hill was strict. So we had to be on our best behavior.
But that Friday, Mrs. Hill hadn’t been gone for ten seconds before some students in the classroom started to talk. From one corner of the classroom I heard Josh ask Nick, “Can I trade my candies for your toy?” At the other end of the room I heard Samantha tell Kayla, “Let’s sit together on the bus for the museum field trip tomorrow.” And so it went all around me, until about half of the students talked with each other.
After a while, I, too, forgot about Mrs. Hill’s instructions. I turned back and asked my friend Liza, “Can I borrow your storybook and keep it for a day?” As soon as the words were out of my mouth, Mrs. Hill walked into the classroom. The whole class returned to silence immediately. And we were full of fear.
Mrs. Hill slowly looked around the classroom and said, “If you were talking while I was gone, then please stand up.” The guilt (内疚) suddenly weighed heavily on me. “I shouldn’t have talked while she was not in the classroom. And now I should be honest and admit my mistake bravely. This is what my parents have always told me, “I thought. Then, I summoned up (鼓起) my courage to stand up, worrying about the punishment that waited for me. Then I looked around.

20.根据前文的“ Generally, websites shouldn’t ask for your personal ID number or your password to another site to sell you something. (一般来说,网站不应该要求你的个人身份证号或密码到另一个网站来卖东西给你。)”可知,此处强调的是在网站上购物的时候,一般不会要求在另外的购物网站输入个人的身份证号和密码的,后文应该强调这样做的结果。E选项“If they do this , you are probably at risk of being scammed.(如果他们这样做,你可能有被骗的风险。)”中的this,指代的就是前文的做法,同时也强调了该做法的后果,就是被骗。能够承接前文,故选E。

46.Dear editor,
Since the first Traditional Chinese Culture Festival is coming, there has been a heated discussion on whether to wear traditional Chinese costume or school uniforms at the festival. As for me, I would be happy to wear traditional Chinese costume.
Firstly, the clothes that we wear can precisely display our culture. So wearing traditional Chinese costume is more suitable for the activity. Secondly, we seldom have an opportunity to wear traditional Chinese costume, so this is a good time for us to wear the costume to express our love for our culture.
All in all, the traditional Chinese costume will make the occasion very unique and impressive. And I’m in favour of wearing traditional Chinese costume.
Yours,
Li Hua

47.One possible version:
To my surprise, no one followed me. I lowered my head alone and was filled with fear. After looking a-round for a while, Mrs. Hill walked towards me. Strangely, she asked in a soft voice, “Why did you dare to stand up?” I said I wanted to be honest and that I realized what I had done was wrong. Unexpectedly, Mrs. Hill was quite amazed by my answer and praised me for that. Then she returned to the front of the classroom and explained why we should be honest.
With Mrs. Hill’s encouragement, another student stood up. Then more students followed until about half of the students stood up. Seeing it, Mrs. Hill praised us for our courage. Then, she asked us to sit down. We continued reading books. After we finished, Mrs. Hill reminded us to remember that everyone should be responsible for his behavior. We all agreed with her. And I was happy that in a way I set a good example to my classmates.
