Fear started taking over. I was walking into my first school in Peru. I had traveled a long distance from India in order to join my parents, who had been here for three years, hoping Peru would help my future. My father decided that I would be better off going to school here, so I enrolled(登记)in the local high school in my new town.
I was afraid how I would do. On the first day, I went to my second period class after I had missed my first. With anxiety, I reached for the door, opening it slowly: Without paying attention to my classmates, I went straight to the teacher and asked if this was the right class. With a sol voice he answered. “Yes.” His voice comforted me a little. He gave me a sheet called Course Requirements, which I would never get in India because we didn’t have anything like that. Then he asked me to choose where I would sit. I didn’t actually want to pick a seat. In India wo had fixed seats, so I never needed to worry about that. I spent the rest of the class taking notes from the image produced by the overhead projector. In Indian schools, we didn’t use the technology we had. We had to take notes as the teacher spoke.
It was noon. I was very confused about when I would have lunch. I went to my next class and the bell rang as I entered. I went through the regular process of asking the teacher if I was in the right class. She said, “It’s still fourth period.”
“But the bell just rang,” I said.
Changing from a gentle tone to a harsher(刺耳的)one, she said, “That is the lunch bell, young man.”
I apologized. Without another word 1 headed for the cafeteria. I felt lucky because we didn’t have this in India. Every confusion seemed like a barrier I had to get through to reach my goal. At the end of the day, I was on my way to the bus which we didn’t have in India either. I spotted my bus and sat down inside happily. I was thinking, today wasn`t so bad.

If you are hooked on watching fantasy or reading science fiction, you may be on to something. Contrary to the common misunderstanding that reading science fiction and fantasy is an unworthy practice, reading it may help young people cope, especially with the stress and anxiety of living while developing critical thinking skills and emotional intelligence for young readers.
Historically, parents have considered literature “good” for young people if it provides moral guidance that reflects their own values. The question is, how does literature of science fiction perform its educational function? This is central to the conflict between parents and educators about what kids should read. For a long time, those who read it have been stigmatized(污名化)as geeks who can’t cope with reality.
A 2015 survey found that these science fiction readers were also major consumers of a wide range of other types of books. In fact, the study noted a close connection between reading varied literary forms and an ability to understand science. Rather than limiting readers’ capacity to deal with reality, reading outside-the-box creative stories may expand their ability to engage reality based on science.
Science fiction does not need to provide real stories about serious social and political issues. Instead, it offers a distance between them. This distance gives readers an approach to coping with complexity and using their imagination to manage real-life challenges. It is why they are powerful and where their value lies. What better way to deal with the uncertainty in life than with science fiction, which explores uncertainty and depicts young people as brave characters, survivors and shapers of their own fates?
Reading science fiction, young people can see themselves-coping, surviving and learning lessons-that may enable them to create their own strategies for life. And the critical thinking and wise habits of mind prompted by this type of literature may actually produce creativity that everyday life and reality typically do not.
8.Why is science fiction rejected by many parents as a proper type of reading?
A.It seldom develops critical and creative thinking.
B.It agrees with the common belief in society.
C.It lacks the educational functions they need.
D.It results in too many expectations from parents.
9.What is the author trying to convey with the findings of 2015 survey?
A.Literature has a negative effect on understanding science.
B.More other types of reading are consumed than science fiction.
C.Science fiction reading restricts readers’ capacity to deal with stress.
D.Reading science fiction helps to develop the young’s ability to cope with reality.
10.What is the author’s attitude towards reading science fiction?
A.Indifferent B.Disapproval C.Neutral D.Favorable
11.What’s the best title of the passage?
A.Why science fiction is so appealing to the young readers
B.How reading science fiction helps kids deal with reality
C.What stories science fiction is bringing to the young people
D.How science fiction turns into the literature mainstream

On the day of the San Francisco Giants’ World Series parade(游行). I made my way to the corner of the street where I was sure I could have a good position to watch the player drive by in their cars. Then the parade started and thousands of arms extended towards the sky. And just like that, none of us could see the parade. Only our phones could.
Don’t get me wrong. I needed my phone to keep in touch with my colleagues, friends and my family. But once the parade began, my phone went from being a useful tool to being a distraction.
I knew the photos I’d take with my phone’s camera would pale in comparison to the footage I’d see on the news that night. Most importantly, I knew this gathering of thousands of people in the streets was really more about experiencing the energy than recording the visuals. All of that pre—parade analysis went out of the window once the first band marched past me. The recording device was just too close. I just couldn’t resist. I took about 40 photos and shot about 20 minutes of video. Then I stared at my phone for 30 minutes and missed the experience I was there for in the first place.
A few decades ago, my friend Isaac and I cut school and went to watch the same parade. Thus was before smartphones and neither of us had a camera. I don’t remember a single visual from that day. But I do remember the feeling. I especially remember the feeling I had after I arrived home to find my parents, who had no way of reaching me all day, wanting just inside my front door.
Of course, it is OK to take a few photos on special occasions. But it seems that we’ve developed such a fear of missing the photo opportunity that we have missed the real life moments as they pass across the two inch screens on our phones.
12.What does the underlined word “distraction” in paragraph 2 probably mean?
A.Something that makes you feel extremely angry.
B.Something relaxing you do alter you have been working.
C.A game or an activity that provides entertainment and pleasure.
D.A thing that takes your attention away from what you want to focus on.
13.What had the author planned to do before he went to the parade?
A.Keep his phone in his pants. B.Take as many photos as possible.
C.Throw his phone out of the window. D.Study the videos just for 30 minutes
14.What does the author want to tell us in paragraph 4?
A.He missed his parents very much. B.Life in the past was much happier.
C.It was inconvenient without phones. D.It is important to experience the visuals.
15.How is text developed?
A.By reasoning. B.By giving examples.
C.By analyzing data. D.By experimenting.

第二节(满分25分)
47.阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
In 1996, I was a 23-year-old surgery student at Srirama Chandra Bhanja Medical College in Cut tack, Odisha. Being a doctor was my dream. Each time I wore my white doctor’s coat, I felt excited. I had a spring in my step while walking the halls of this famous institution. Above all, I could follow behind the senior physicians treating patients in real time.
Like many medical students in training, I was assigned the night shift. As part of the team, I enjoyed interacting with patients. On a summer night, around one a. m., I was on duty when a tall middle-aged man came in on a stretcher (担架) in severe pain. His large body was doubled over his hands pressing his stomach to try to contain his pain. We got to work.
Banudhar, the patient, complained of progressive pain in his stomach which was abnormally swollen, a symptom building up over the past four hours. Despite some relief from the pain killers, his continuous discomfort was clear. It had been troubling him for several months but he had ignored the symptoms, caring on with his work to feed his family. But that night, he just could not carry on and needed an operation right away.
Banudhar had been taken to the hospital, but nobody attended him. He was alone and terrified. He asked me if his condition was serious, his eyes wild with worry. I couldn’t find the right words, stricken by inexperience and emotion.
“Should I be honest? Will honesty upset him further?”
“How can he make right decisions in his state?”
There must be someone to be here for him, especially during and after the operation. I thought and did my best to contact his wife.
His family lived in a village five hours away from Cuttack. The first three calls did not go through. A few more went unanswered. By then it was almost dawn and my hope was fading.
注意:
1.续写词数应为150左右;

How’s it going? I’m writing to recommend a book that I really couldn’t get enough of, because World Book and Copyright Day is on the way.
The book is The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe written by C. S. Lewis. The reasons why I recommend the book are as follows: First, it’s an exciting tale set in a magical land. Second, when I’m reading it, I feel as if I were really there. What’s more, I am addicted to the adventures of the four children and the characters they meet.
I hope you can read it and share your opinions about it with me.

Twenty minutes later, his wife called back. I informed her of Banudhar’s physical condition and that he needed an operation at once. When she heard the news, she burst into tears, eager to rush to the hospital. But she added that she might be late because of traffic inconvenience. I realized her inner anxiety and tried my best to comfort her, promising to attend to her husband before her arrival. During the period Danudhar’s operation was performed against time. And I did perform my duty as I had promised.
His wife made it to the hospital after the operation. When I led her to her husband-weak but alive, she wept with relief. She apologized for her delay and meanwhile appreciated my care and help. I still paid a visit every day. To my delight, Banudhar was recovering day by day. Soon he left hospital, carrying on with his daily routine to feed his family. From the experience, I was fully aware of the responsibility and great value as a doctor, which, therefore, inspired me to continue to pursue my dream.
