Edwin Hubble made his most important discoveries in the 1920s. Today, other astronomers continue the work he began. Many of them are using the Hubble Space Telescope that is named after him.

Edwin Powell Hubble was born in 1889 in Marshfield, Missouri. He spent his early years in the state of Kentucky. Then he moved with his family to Chicago, in Louisville. He attended the University of Chicago. He studied mathematics and astronomy. Hubble was a good student. He was a good athlete, too. He was a member of the University of Chicago championship basketball team in 1909. He also was an excellent boxer. Several people urged him to train for the world heavyweight boxing championship after college. Instead, he decided to continue his studies. He went to Queen’s College at Oxford, England.

James Gross, a psychology professor at Stanford University, has a 13yearold daughter who loves math and science. “It hasn't occurred to her yet that's unusual,” he says. “But I know in the next couple of years, it will.”
She's already being pulled out of class to do advanced things with a couple of other kids, who are guys. And as someone who studies human emotion for a procession, Gross says, “I know as time goes on, she will feel increasingly lonely as a girl who's interested in math and science, and be at risk of narrowing her choices in life before finding out how far she could have gone.”
Gross' concern clearly shows what has been a touchy subject in the world of science for a long time: Why are there still so few women in science, and how might that affect what we learn from research?
Women now make up half the national workforce, earn more college and graduate degrees than men, and by some estimates represent the largest single economic force in the world. Yet the gender gap in science persists, to a greater degree than in other professions, particularly in highend, mathintensive fields such as computer science and engineering.
According to US Census Bureau statistics, women in fields commonly referred to as STEM (science, technology, engineering, mathematics) made up 7 percent of that workforce in 1970, a figure that had jumped to 23 percent by 1990. But the rise essentially stopped there. Two decades later, in 2011, women made up 26 percent of the science workforce.
8.According to James Gross, in the near future his daughter may .
    A.become a great scientist
B.feel lonely and have fewer choices
C.be pulled out of class with some guys
D.learn math and science better and better
9.We can learn from the text that .
A.women are cleverer than men in college
B.men represent the largest single economic force
C.women make up more than 50% of the national workforce
D.the number of women graduating from college is larger than that of men
10.How does the author develop the last paragraph?
    A.By providing examples.
    B.By making comments.
    C.By following time order.
    D.By explaining the process.
11.Which of the following is the best title for the text?
A.Why It Is Important to Get More Women Into Science
B.James Gross, Confusion About His daughter
C.Situation of Women in the Whole Country
D.Future of Women in the Workforce

根据第二段中的“I know as time goes on, she will feel increasingly lonely as a girl who's interested in math and science, and be at risk of narrowing her choices in life before finding out how far she could have gone.”
根据第四段中的“Women now make up half the national workforce, earn more college and graduate degrees than men”可知,现在女性占全国劳动力的一半,比男性获得更多的大学和研究生学位,由此可推断出大学毕业的女性比男性的数量多,故选D。
根据最后一段中的“According to ... made up 7 percent ... in 1970, ... jumped to 23 percent by 1990 ... Two decades later, in 2011, women made up 26 percent ...”

What is the nature of the scientific attitude, the attitude of the man or woman who studies and applies physics, biology, chemistry, geology, engineering, medicine or any other science?
We all know that science plays an important role in our societies. However, many people believe that our progress depends on two different aspects of science. The first aspect is the application of the machines, products and systems of knowledge that scientists and technologists develop. The second is the application of the special methods of thought and action that scientists use in their work.
What are these special methods of thinking and acting? First of all, it seems that a successful scientist is curious - he wants to find out how and why the universe works. He usually pays attention to problems which he notices have no satisfying explanation, and looks for relationships even if the data available seem to be unconnected. Moreover,he thinks he can improve the existing conditions and enjoys trying to solve the problems which this involves.
He is a good observer, accurate, patient and objective and uses the facts he observes to the fullest. For example, trained observers obtain a very large amount of information about a star mainly from the accurate analysis of the simple lines that appear in a spectrum(光谱).
He does not accept statements which are not based on the most complete evidence available. He rejects authority as the only basis for truth. Scientists always check statements and make experiments carefully and objectively.
Furthermore,he does not readily accept his own idea, since he knows that man is the least reliable of scientific instruments and that a number of factors tend to disturb objective investigation.
Lastly,he is full of imagination since he often has to look for relationships in data which are not only complex but also frequently incomplete. Furthermore,he needs imagination if he wants to guess how processes work and how events take place.
These seem to be some of the ways in which a successful scientist or technologist thinks and acts.
    12. Which of the following statements about a curious scientist is TRUE?
    A. He doesn’t find confidence and pleasure in work.
    B. He is interested in problems that are explained.
    C. He makes efforts to investigate potential connections.
    D. He looks for new ways of acting.
    13. According to the passage, a successful scientist would NOT______.
    A. easily believe in unchecked statements.
    B. easily criticize others' research work.
    C. always use his imagination in work.
    D. always use evidence from observation.
    14. Which word can be used to describe the data that a good scientist uses?
    A. complete B. concrete C. complicated D. confusing
    15. What does the passage mainly discuss?
    A. Application of technology.
    B. Progress in modern society.
    C. Successful scientists' ways of thinking and acting.
    D. How to become a successful scientist.
    【答案】CACC

    1.having got   2.cards 3.to enter    4.easily 5.which
    6.against 7.the   8.hasn't been tested 9.security   10.available

固定短语need sb to do需要某人做某事。故填to enter。
故填which。
be against反对。故填against。
故填the。8. 故填hasn't been tested。

All work but no play make Jack a dull boy. I used to studying all round the clock in my junior school. As result, all the teachers and classmates spoke highly of me, say that I was a diligent student. Despite their praise, my grades were not so well. I turned to my head teacher for advices. What he said impressed me deep. He advised me to combine study to relaxation and he believed things would look up. I did as what he said. Whenever I am tired from studying, I would stop to have a rest by listening to a song or having a walk on campus. By and by, the result is satisfying.

当主语后面有as well as , with , along with,together with , but , like , rather than , except 时,谓语动词要与最前面的主语保持一致。
    第八处to改为with/ and 考查固定搭配。此处为combine… with/ and. . .
