When in Ireland,do as the Irish do. And when it comes to food and drink,be sure to try these local specialities(地方特色菜).
(1)Baked Ham
Definitely not a poorman’s dish, the traditional Irish ham was coated with sugar, dressed with cloves(丁香),then baked until crisp on the outside, tender on the inside. Generally it is served with boiled cabbage and cooked or fried potatoes. It is not everyday food, even for the welltodo, but bargains can be had at some pub restaurants.
(2)Smoked Salmon
The most popular way to enjoy salmon is smoked, either on bread with egg,or simply on its own with a salad on the side. Farmed salmon can be rather ordinary;the flavor of wild salmon tend to be better. Unfortunately the price of wild salmon tends to be significantly higher as well.
(3)Dublin Coddle
Dubliners often eat this on Saturday nights before they go out. It is a good basic dish made of chopped sausage and bacon cooked with onions and potatoes in beef stock. It is also easy to make in quantity, and can be reheated the next day.
(4)Soup of the Day
Advertised nearly everywhere,it is usually served with bread and butter, and is a very good value for a lunchtime snack. In a typical Irish way the question,“What is the soup of the day?” will, nine times out of ten,be answered with a shrug and the word,“Vegetable. ” Pot luck(家常菜) is the order of the day.

Many people believe eating healthily is expensive—and more costly than buying junk foods. But our new research, published in the BMC Public Health, shows this isn’t the truth.
Most of the Australian family food budget(预算) is being spent on junk foods and drinks that are high in fat, sugar and salt.
Less than 7% of Australians eat healthily. The Australian adults get at least 35% of their energy from junk foods and drinks. As a result, twothirds of adults (63%) and onequarter of children are overweight.
We used the Australian Health Survey 2011-2013 and the suggestions of the Australian Dietary Guidelines to model healthy diets for a family of two adults and two children every two weeks. We collected food prices in supermarkets and stores in high and lowsocioeconomic(社会经济地位低的) areas in Brisbane, and compared the diet prices with family incomes.
In both areas,a family of two adults and two children spends about 18% more on present diets than would be required to buy healthy diets. About 58% of the food budget for present diets is spent on junk foods, including takeaway foods (14%),and sugary drinks (4%).
In the lowsocioeconomic area,a family of two adults and two children spends $640. 20 every two weeks on their present diets, but could buy a healthy diet for $560. 93 every two weeks. In the highsocioeconomic area, these numbers are $661. 92 and $580. 01.
Supermarket food prices were about 3% higher in the highsocioeconomic location. Takeaway foods were also relatively more expensive, but sugary drinks were priced similarly in both areas.
Present diets cost more than healthy diets,so causes other than price must be helping to drive preferences for unhealthy choices.
4.What did the researchers find?
A.Australians have a preference for sweet foods.
B.Most Australian kids have fat problems.
C.Half Australians live on junk foods.
D.Most Australians eat unhealthily.
5.How did the researchers get the result?
A.By making a comparison.
B.By doing the study online.
C.By carrying out interviews.
D.By asking personal questions.
6.What can we learn from Paragraph 5?
A.Australian foods are healthier.
B.A healthy diet is actually cheaper.
C.Health foods are becoming more expensive.
D.People choose junk foods for their low prices.
7.What might a following paragraph be about?
A.The harm of junk foods.
B.How we can eat healthily.
C.Why people choose junk foods.
D.The advantages of a healthy diet.
C
Thanks to a program called Hunger: Not Impossible (HNI), hungry people could have access to fresh, healthy food in their neighborhood by texting one simple word: Hungry. On one hand, people in charge of the program learn that each year 42 million Americans go hungry including 15. 9 million children. On the other, grocery stores, restaurants, and food providers throw out 60 million tons of unused food. HNI had a solution — connectivity.
HNI started fundraising and developing partnerships. Then they make plans with organizations and charities to help locate people who suffer from food insecurity. And they reached out to technical experts at Salesforce who developed an easy-to-use text-driven platform using a chat box. With all the elements in place, a simple text started the goodwill rolling.
When a needy person types in “Hungry” and sends the text message to HNI, they receive a message, back showing the closest locations that are offering free food. They also get a text displaying different menu options. They simply select a restaurant, choose the meal, then head to the takeout counter where they pick up their free meal alongside paying customers. No questions are asked and dignity is preserved. The pilot project began in Venice Beach, California, providing over 250 meals to more than 50 youth in three weeks. HNI then grew to
Bentonville, Arkansas, Klamath Falls Oregon and St. Louis Missouri.
“Providing food is the first step in transforming lives for the best.” Michelle DiBattiste, operations and volunteer manager at Safe Place for Youth said in the press release, “By satisfying that initial survived instinct of finding food,Hunger: Not Impossible provides necessary space for personal growth, self-realization and finding stability. If there were less hungry people in the world, the crime rate would be reduced. There would be fewer homeless people, and the cost of healthcare would cut down. ”
8. What does HNI do to help hungry people?
A. Make a link between hungry people and food providers.
B. Offer hungry people fresh and healthy food.
C. Ask some restaurants to donate money.
D. Text a message to a grocery store.
9. What does the underlined word “elements” refer to in paragraph 2?
A. Fund, restaurants, technical experts and the number of hungry people.
B. Text messages, location of the stores, menu options and the takeout counter.
C. The pilot project, people suffering from food insecurity, a chat box and plans.
D. Fund, partnership, locating hungry people, and an easy-to-use text-driven platform.
10. What can we infer from what Michelle DiBattiste said?
A. Hungry people will live a better life.
B. HNI is good at helping hungry people.
C. HNI is good for the people and society.
D. Personal growth is extremely important.
11. What can be the best title for the text?
A. A Programme Connects Hungry People with Food
B. Feeding the Needy Is Necessary for Social Stability
C. A Simple Word Helps People in Need of Food
D. Hungry People Are Grateful to Restaurants
D
Skyscrapers are the symbol of urban life. City people are used to seeing tall buildings and apartments. Farms, on the other hand, are associated with rural(农村的) life. However, there are experts who think skyscrapers should become farms to meet the increasing food needs.
By the middle of this century, some scientists suggest, almost 80% of the Earth's population could live in cities. In addition, the population could increase to 9. 1 billion during that time yet the amount of land available for farming will be the same. If current farming practices don't change, we will need an area of new land to produce enough food for the planet.
Vertical farms, where urban farmers could grow crops in environment friendly skyscrapers, could be the solution. In spite of concerns over high costs, experts want to make it a reality and use these skyscrapers to grow crops.
Vertical farms would have many advantages, supporters say. Unlike traditional farming, vertical farming could be free of chemicals and diseases. Besides, crops would not suffer from problems like flooding. Finally, vertical farms would reduce the cost and negative effects of transporting food over long distances.
Some argue that although crops growing in a tall glass building would get natural sunlight during the day, it wouldn't be enough. For this reason, vertical farms would need additional light sources, such as artificial light.
Another way of growing fresh food is to build urban farms on rooftops. This more practical approach may be more achievable than the idea of farms in skyscrapers, researchers suggest. Experts agree that innovative (革新的) farming practices are needed to support the need for more food at affordable costs, both to the farmer and to the consumer, but the best ideas have yet to come.
12.What primary problem could vertical farming settle?
A.Poor state of rural life.
B.Shortage of food supply.
C.High cost of transporting crops.
D.Environmental pollution by traditional farming.
13.What is the advantage of vertical farming?
A.It can produce organic food. B.It requires little care.
C.It can benefit transport industry. D.It needs very low cost.
14.What is a big challenge of making vertical farming a reality?
A.Farmable land. B.Crop diseases.
C.Light sources. D.Climate conditions.
15.What can be the best title of the text?
A.Future Food Needs B.Symbol of Urban Life
C.Fanning on Rooftops D.Farms of the Future

If you are seeking a nice vacation destination for your family, the country of Greece should be at the top of your list. Apart from being one of the most beautiful places on the earth, it is also home to some of the best food and wine that has ever been produced. 1
Good accommodation is hard to find. Whether hotel or resort, chances are they’re all booked. Because of this, you better know when to book reservations. 2 Beaches are less crowded and deals are better. For the low on budget, you may choose the youth hostels in Santorini for an elegant view.
3 In contrast to common belief, there are fewer vegetarian (素食者) choices than you might expect. The Greeks consume significantly more meat than the rest of the Mediterranean population. The majority of the restaurants provide meat-based dishes, and the food is unquestionably delicious.
Not all beaches are safe. Just like in any other country, not everything is as safe as it seems. Some of Greece’s beaches can be dangerous. Milos is home to some of the most beautiful but dangerous beaches in Greece. 4 To be more cautious, avoid such beaches whenever possible.
You’ll need cash. 5 This is because you will hardly find ATMs since they are mostly located at a distance, inaccessible, or even non-existent. It is recommended that you convert your money to Euros in advance as this is the currency you are going to be using.
A. Vegetarian options are limited.
B. Meat-based dishes are quite tasty.
C. Tsigrados, a beach from there, comes with a warning sign.
D. The best time is during low season and shoulder season.
E. Make sure you have adequate money before you fly to Greece.
F. You can book a room with a bird’s eye view of the fantastic beaches.
G. But there are a few things you should be aware of before travelling to Greece.
