One day, Lindsay and Erica were sitting at Lindsay's house working very hard. Fourth grade was tough, and they were working on a science project about weather. Lindsay was a hard worker like Erica, so the two girls were happy to have each other as partners. They were writing about rain and were amazed to learn that Hawaii is the world's wettest place. Lindsay found that Mount Waialeale, on the island of Kauai, gets about 460 inches of rain a year! In 1982, Mount Waialeale set an alltime world record when it received 666 inches of rain! The girls knew that their classmates would find all these facts interesting.
The girls were enjoying the fun facts they were finding when all of a sudden, Lindsay saw Erica choking. Erica had been chewing on a pen cap and had accidentally swallowed it! Erica started pointing to her neck. Lindsay asked her if she was choking. When Erica nodded to say yes, Lindsay quickly stood up and did the Heimlich manoeuvre to try to help Erica stop choking.
Lindsay was afraid of hurting her friend, so the first time she tried the Heimlich manoeuvre, she did not do it very hard. She tried a second time, and nothing happened. After trying it a third time, the pen cap flew out of Erica's mouth!

Fire fighting is a serious matter. Knowing what to do during a fire can save people’s lives. It is important to know the ways you can use and show them to everyone else in the family, such as stairways and emergency exits, but not elevators(电梯).
From the lower floors of buildings, escape through windows is possible. Learn the best way to get out from a window with the least chance of serious injury.
The second floor window is usually not very high from the ground. An average person, hanging by the fingertips will have a drop of about 6 feet to the ground. It is about the height of an average man. Of course, it is safer to jump a short way down than to stay in a burning building.
Windows are also useful when you are waiting for help. Be sure to keep the door closed before opening the window. Otherwise, smoke and fire may be drawn into the room. Keep your head low at the window to be sure you get fresh air rather than smoke that may have leaked into the room.
On the second or third floor, the best windows for escape are those which open onto a roof. From the roof a person can drop to the ground more safely. Dropping onto cement might end in injury. Bushes and trees can help you to have a soft landing.
( )8.Which of the following should not be used when trying to escape from a fire?
A.Windows. B.Elevators.
C.Fire exits. D.Stairways.
( )9.How far from the ground is the second floor window?
A.About 12 feet.
B.About 6 feet.
C.About the height of an average man.
D.Nearly 10 feet.
( )10.According to the passage, windows are ________ of escaping a fire.
A.the only way B.the best way
C.safer than any other ways D.one of the possible ways
( )11.If you are on the second or third floor when a fire breaks out, you’d better ________.
A.drop directly onto the ground
B.first drop onto a roof then onto the cement
C.drop from a roof window then onto bushes or trees
D.drop onto the cement rather than bushes and grass

For centuries, people have tried to invent a perfect universal written language and Chinese has actually been considered before. Francis Bacon used to think that a language like Chinese and its writing system would have qualified. Chinese doesn’t use an alphabet based on sounds, but symbols indicating meaning.
Chinese character has its special relationship between the sign and what it symbolized. Some of them also look like what they represent. For example, a mountain may look just like a mountain with a peak in the middle. And fire resembles some blazing (燃烧的) logs. When you put them together and you get volcano. Isn’t that amazing?
While some of them look like what they represent, most of them really don’t. In fact, some of them are incredibly complicated. For instance, “Biang” is the name of a kind of noodle, which has 57 strokes (笔画).It is very hard for people to pronounce or recognize this character, let alone writing it out correctly. Chinese is so complicated that since the 1950s, a simplified system of characters has been used in the mainland of China. But Chinese characters often represent whole works, and there are a lot of them. In the Chinese dictionary there are around sixty four thousand characters.
So Chinese characters might not become a universal writing system soon. The trouble is not just inventing one, but getting people to use it. It wouldn’t be easy for the whole world to agree on the same set of meanings. After all, language needs a cultural context. You cannot really just use a universal language as you like.
( )12.What can we learn from Francis Bacon?
A.He believed that Chinese writing system was perfect.
B.He managed to invent a universal written language.
C.He recommended Chinese to use alphabets based on sounds.
D.He thought written Chinese language could be used globally.
( )13.How does the author explain the characteristic of Chinese character?
A.By analyzing structures of toys.
B.By comparing concepts.
C.By giving examples.
D.By collecting data.
( )14.Why do Chinese people use a simplified system of Chinese characters?
A.It is hard to pronounce Chinese characters.
B.It is difficult to recognize or write Chinese characters.
C.It is fashionable to use simplified Chinese characters.
D.It is complicated to look up Chinese characters in the dictionaries.
( )15.What is the passage mainly about?
A.How to write simplified Chinese characters.
B.Why people need a universal written language.
C.Chinese is a perfect universal written language.
D.Whether Chinese are suitable to be a world language.
