Every festival has its own meaning. Labour Day, for example, celebrates the value of hard
work. But somehow it now seems that while celebrating all festivals we just care about one thing-shopping. And that can be a big problem.
“In a way,over-consumption(过度消费)is the mother of all our environmental problems,” Kalle Lasn once told CNN. Lasn is the organizer of Buy Nothing Day, a day set up in Canada in 1992 to fight against unhealthy spending habits, and has now become an international event. It's held on the day, which is known as Black Friday-a famous shopping day in the US and Canada.
You can see the irony(奇异可笑之处)here.
Even though the idea of Buy Nothing Day was brought up 29 years ago, we seem to need it now more than ever. It's just as Lasn said, all the different kinds of dilemmas in our lives today-bad air quality, the reduction of forest area, endangered animal species, and plastic bags found in the ocean-seem to be the same cause: over-consumption.
The latest example is the Singles' Day shopping craze of Nov.11, which saw a new sales record. But as Nie Li, a campaigner at Greenpeace, told Reuters,“Record-setting over-consumption means record-setting waste.” And it was reported that last year the Singles' Day packages left more than 160,000 tons of waste, including plastic and cardboard. The Collins dictionary has also just named “single-use” its Word of the Year, pointing out the problem that they're too many things we throw away after only using them once.
So, Buy Nothing Day might only be here for one day a year, but it's not just to remind us about a break from shopping on that day, but to change our lifestyle completely, focusing on fun“with people we care about” rather than wasting money on useless things.
24. What's the author's purpose of writing the first paragraph?
A. To express people's love for all festivals.
B.To talk about the meaning of the festivals.
C.To appreciate the value of the festivals.
D. To introduce the topic of the passage.
25. Why did Kalle Lasn organize Buy Nothing Day?
A. To help people save money.
B. To cut the cost for daily life.
C. To prevent over-consumption.
D.To set up a new sales record.
26. What's Nie Li's attitude towards the shopping craze?
A.Opposed B.Supportive C.Unknown D.Neutral.
27. What can be a suitable title for the passage?
A.Creating a New Lifestyle
B.Buy Nothing Day
C.Festivals Around the World
D. A Change in People's Life

Caneze and her parents moved to the United States when she was only two years old and they haven't visited their motherland or ten years. Last month, Caneze's grandfather came to see them, and the family held a big party. But Caneze didn't spend much time with him that day. He didn't speak English, so how could she have any sort of conversation with him? Caneze spent most of that day in the study room, texting her best friend, Maya, and watching her cousins play video games. There was a huge art competition coming up at school, and Caneze and Maya were planning to compete.
“I wish you'd spent time with your grandfather instead of your phone, Caneze,” Mom said one day on the way home.
“But I don't even know him,”Caneze said, “and he doesn't speak any English. How could I talk to him?”“And you don't speak any Ukrainian(乌克兰语),Caneze, but he’d love to get to know you. I think you may find that you two have a lot in common.”
Two weeks later, Caneze came home from school in the afternoon only to find her grandfather sitting at the kitchen table chatting with Mom happily. On the table sat some books. The old man smiled warmly at Caneze, and she smiled back as she sat down at the table. As Grandpa and Mom spoke in Ukrainian, Caneze let her mind wander. As the art competition was around the corner, Maya and she had to be quick for their project. Suddenly, an idea for a picture came to her, so she fetched her sketchbook. Sitting at the table, she sketched while the adults talked. Then Caneze heard Mom say,“I have to run out for a few minutes. You can stay here with Grandpa.”
Caneze suddenly felt unsure and shy. What would the two of them talk about?“This is going to be awkward,” she thought as her mind was racing for an idea for this embarrassing moment. She gave Grandpa a polite smile and then returned to the lines and shapes she had drawn on the page.
