Imagine having the opportunity to sing together with hundreds of other people while you are at home alone. You can do this in a virtual choir. Virtual choir members record themselves while they perform alone on video. These videos are uploaded onto the Internet, and then they are put together into one video that you can see online—a virtual choir. Anyone can take part in a virtual choir from anywhere—all you need is a video camera and an Internet connection. A virtual choir enables people to add their voices to those of other individuals and become part of the global community. It has proved to be a positive influence on the lives of many people.
The virtual choir was the idea of award-winning composer and conductor Eric Whitacre. He fell in love with Mozart's classical music when he sang for the university choir. Moved by this music, he said, "It was like seeing color for the first time." Over ten years after his graduation. Whitacre's original compositions began to become quite popular among choirs and singers. This led to the creation of the virtual choir.
In 2009, Whitacre received a video of a girl who was singing one of his works. Inspired, he asked his fans tomake videos, which he then joined together into one performance. His first virtual choir, "Lux Aurunque", had 198 singers from 12 different countries. It has received millions of views on the Internet. Since then, the virtual choir has become a worldwide phenomenon. Whitacre's next effort was the virtual Youth Choir for UNICEF, which was first seen on stage on 23 July 2014 in the UK. Altogether, 2,292 young people from 80 countries joined in to sing Whitacre's song "What If'".
The virtual choir is a wonderful way for people around the world to sing with one voice and thus make the world a better place.
24.Which of the following is a virtual choir?

The advice to drink eight glasses of water per day to stay healthy could be misleading, a new study has found.
The research looked at data from 5,600 people across 26 countries with ages ranging from seven days old to 96 years old. It found that people may need less than this amount per day, but requirements can vary on an individual basis.
“The science has never supported the old eight glasses thing as an appropriate guideline, mainly because it confused total water turnover with water from drinks. And a lot of your water comes from the food you eat,” says lead author of the study, Professor Dale Schoeller. “This study is the best we’ve done so far to measure how much water people actually consume on a daily basis, and the major factors that drive water turnover.”
Results show daily water needs peak among men aged 20-29, but they remain the same for women from the age of 20 to 55. The team also found that men’s and women’s water requirements differ by about two glasses, or half a liter. The average 20-year-old man of normal weight living in a temperate climate would take in and lose about 3.2 liters every day. For women, that number is closer to 2.7.
According to the study, physical activity level explained the largest proportion of the differences in water turnover, followed by sex, the Human Development Index (人类发展指数), and age. The researchers found hunter-gatherers and farmers in developing nations had higher water turnover than those in industrialized economies. In other words, the lower your home country’s Human Development Index, the more water you go through in a day.
“That’s representing the combination of several factors,” Schoeller continues. “Those people in low HDI countries are more likely to live in areas with higher average temperatures, and more likely to be performing physical labor. That, plus being less likely to have access to a sip of clean water whenever they need it, makes their water turnover higher.”
The results of the study will have an influence on global warming. The researchers hope that the study will be able to help to predict more specific and accurate future water needs.
28.What can be learned from the new study?
A. Women need less water per day when turning twenty.
B. Men consume the most water per day in their 20s.
C. Men consume two liters of water per day more than women.
D. The daily water turnover of a man doubles that of a woman.
29.What’s Professor Dale Schoeller's attitude towards the eight glasses theory?
A. Approved. B. Objective. C. Negative. D. Unclear.
30.Which are the factors mentioned in the text that cause the difference in water turnover among people?
a. Gender difference.
b. Water drinking habits.
c. The amount of physical work a person performs.
d. The level of development of the country a person lives in.
A. acd B. bcd C. abd D. abc
31.What does Schoeller explain in the sixth paragraph?
A. The water shortage problem faced by low HDI countries.
B. The poor living condition of people in low HDI countries.
C. Why people living in low HDI countries have higher water turnover.
D. Why people living in low HDI countries cannot get clean water.

NASA is making preparations to send a crew to the moon who will explore the lunar surface with the hope of constructing a stable habitat. Although the American space agency focuses on just sending astronauts, other companies are looking further into the future for when humans will colonize the natural satellite.
Experts at Money, a company for consumer credit products, released the first-ever moon loan guide that reveals living on the lunar surface would cost $325,067 a month.
"With the Earth becoming increasingly populated and space technology advancing, it won't be long before lunar living becomes the new normal," reads the study. The team from Money used various factors to calculate the cost of a house on the moon: raw materials needed to build a house, the special materials needed to build on the moon's atmosphere, astronauts required to travel to build, and the average cost of transporting materials to the moon.
According to the moon loan guide, the first fully functioning house on the moon would be$48,454,063, which is a high price for a home. The price includes adding life-saving details to homes such as air seals, industrial-strength air-conditioners and heaters. "Generating energy is vital when living in such extreme conditions, and therefore the cost of some supplies may force you to consider some alternative options. The most efficient way to generate electricity on the moon is to buy a small nuclear reactor costing $1.3 million," Money shares in the study. "Alternatively, 34 solar panels would generate enough electricity to run one house and cost only $23,616 in comparison."
The guide also reveals the most ideal locations on the moon, with "Sea of Rains" being considered "the perfect family suburb"—this region sits at the north and is one of the largest impact craters(陨石撞击坑) in the Solar System.
32.What's the purpose of NASA sending a crew to the moon?
A. To encourage companies to release moon loan.
B. To colonize the moon alone.
C. To explore the moon for natural resources.
D. To build a lasting living place on the moon.
33.Which of the following was not considered when the team estimated the cost of a lunar house?
A. Materials needed to build a house on the moon.
B. The cost of looking for the most ideal location on the moon.
C. Astronauts needed to travel to build a house on the moon.
D. The average cost of transporting materials to the moon.
34.What can we infer from the study?
A. Lunar living won't take long to become a reality.
B. The first house on the moon will be the most expensive home.
C. You will definitely buy a nuclear reactor to generate electricity on the moon.
D. The perfect location on the moon for living is the largest impact crater in the Solar System.
35.What's the text mainly about?
A. The first loan guide about living on the moon.
B. The moon—the most ideal living place for humans.
C. NASA will send astronauts to the moon.
D. Living on the moon has become possible.

As we know, mental health is in a worse situation among young people globally. __36___ This not only lowers quality of life, but has a negative impact on a teenager's growth. To get at the root causes of this decline, a group of scientists conducted a study and found the combination of high screen time and low "green time" greatly affects mental well-being. Children nowadays spend more time than ever in front of electronic devices.
The average daily screen time for 8- to 18-year-olds was 7.5 hours in the U.S. ten years ago. As the study states, "This greatly goes above guidelines of 2 hours per day." Now the condition is worse by the fact that so many schools are using technology to teach classes. Indeed some screen time can promote connections and enable tasks to be done more efficiently. ___37__ In addition to troubling nerve stimulation, too much screen time takes the place of important protective behaviors for mental health such as physical activity, getting adequate sleep, and academic activities.
The study authors suggest that green time could act as a cure for screen time, essentially balancing its negative effects.
___38__ The attention systems can be restored in natural environment when they are worn out, because they employ involuntary attention there, which is not tiring or effortful.
___39__ The great nature could potentially function as a psychological well-being promotion intervention(干预) for children and teenagers in a high-tech era. This knowledge could be a guide to public health departments that are struggling to restore happiness and cheer in countless anxious teenagers. ___40__
A. Teenagers urgently need more green time.
B. Screen–based technology makes kids less attentive.
C. The frequency of depression and anxiety is increasing.
D. There are many more ways, however, in which it is harmful.
E. It suggests more outdoor projects like building parks could be fundamental.
F. Paying constant directed attention to screens can raise directed attention tiredness.
G. This study highlights that nature may currently be a potential public health resource.

答案:
A Spring Outing
Spring is a good time for outing. Aiming to understand each other better and build up our bodies, our class had a spring outing last Saturday. As scheduled, we gathered together at 8:30 am at the gate of our school. We went to our destination by bus, laughing and singing all the way. Much to our delight, the trip involved mountain climbing as well as a picnic. Hardly had we reached the top of the mountain when we enjoyed an awesome view of the whole city. Exhausted as we were on the way back to school, we all regarded this outing as an unforgettable experience, for it not only made us get close to nature with fresh air and fantastic scenery, but also enhance the friendship between us students and promote our mutual cooperation.

Text 1
W: I didn’t know that you could play basketball so well. Did you play in high school?
M: Not really. My brother played in college so I used to practice with him.
W: Awesome. Our company team could really need your help!
Text 2
W: Before you watch that movie, you must finish all of your homework and clean your room.
M: OK, Mum. I promise I’ll finish everything after we’ve eaten dinner.
Text 3
M: That’s such a nice shirt, Sally. It looks like it might be quite expensive.
W: It may look expensive, but it only cost $ 20 at the department store.
M: I usually buy my clothing online. Maybe I will go there next time.
Text 4
M: How could I be so stupid? The answer was right in front of me and I still put the wrong one. Of course a blue whale is larger than an elephant!
W: It will be fine. You still passed the test. Your parents will not be angry with you.
M: I know, but I really wanted that perfect score so my parents would be proud. It was the only question I got wrong.
Text 5
M: The customers at table four want you to know that their dinner was delicious.
W: I am glad. I was afraid they would not like the green beans I made.
M: All of the waiters say their customers love them. We should ask the manager to consider putting them on the menu permanently.
Text 6
M: Janet, I’m so glad I found you! Do you work close by?
W: Yes, I’m just walking back from lunch now. Do you need help?
M: Yes. I’m trying to find the right bus to take me to the central library.
W: Let me take these papers up to my office and then I’ll drive you there.
M: Thanks so much. I don’t have a map and my phone is dead.
W: No problem. I’m sorry about how confusing it is for you being new in town.
M: Great. I’m glad I asked you, thanks again!
Text 7
M: If I have to spend any more money on my car,I’ll be so angry!
W: I saw you pass my house the other day. It looked fine then.
M: I left it parked in the snow the other day and then it wouldn’t start.
W: I took a mechanics course in high school. Can I help?
M: It’s OK. I thought there was a big problem with the engine but I’m pretty sure it’s just the battery.
W: We can take the train downtown to go to the car supply shop. I’m sure we can find you a new battery.
M: That sounds good. I’ve got about two more hours of work to do at the office. We can go after.
W: OK, the store closes around 4:00 so let's meet in front of the train station at noon.
M: 12:30 is better. See you then!
Text 8
M: Thanks for meeting with me to talk about my son.
W: My pleasure, I wanted to tell you that your son is very smart but is having some issues.
M: I think he learns quite fast and he gets along so well with other students. What is the problem?
W: I agree. He has so many friends and he usually pays attention in class, but he has trouble when testing.
M: I see. What would you suggest he do to improve?
W: I think he should do a few practice tests at home before examinations.
M: Should he have more challenging homework and reading as well?
W: I don't think that is necessary. He just gets very nervous before testing.
M: I see. Maybe if he had more practice it would be easier for him. Thank you for the suggestion.
W: I will be checking the notes he is taking in class and watching his progress. You can come back to the school next month and we can talk again.
M: Thanks so much again.
Text 9
M: My parents started to pack up our house yesterday to get ready to move to Florida after our high school graduation.
W: It'll be so hot if they move there this summer. Mine are staying in New York until they retire.
M: It will but they don’t need to stay here because I’ll be living elsewhere. I still wish they would stay in the northeast of the U. S. though.
W: My parents are only staying because my little sister is still in high school. Where are you going to university?
M: I was applying to schools in California, but I only got into schools in Boston.
W: Oh, I saw you had a sweatshirt from New York University. I thought you might be going there.
M: My dad really wanted me to go there because that was his university. I applied last month and went on a campus tour, but I didn’t get accepted.
W: I visited it last week as well but I also didn’t get in. I’m going to take a year-off instead.
M: Wow, I can’t believe it. What will you be doing here for the whole year?
W: I’ll mostly just do boring part-time jobs in the city but I’m still looking forward to it.
Text 10
Can everyone hear me? Okay. My name is Will. I am the ride operator and this is my assistant Anna. I just want to go over a few rules with everyone before we board, as it is park policy that I let you all know before we can get to the fun. Please keep all your questions until the end. There is no food or drinks allowed on the ride. Please remove all items from your pockets before boarding. It can be dangerous for your fellow riders if a coin or cell phone falls out during motion. You may not be able to recover anything that loses during the ride. There has already been one lost cell phone today, because a person decided they wanted to take a picture during the ride. Please take off any hats or loose jewelry that cannot be safely covered by your clothing. Keep in mind, the amusement park is not responsible for any lost or stolen items. Anna was here on the day a woman lost her diamond earrings.
All hands and feet must remain inside the car at all times. Spitting off the ride will not be tolerated. If you are caught, you will be removed from the park. Are there any questions so far? No? Then you may board, four people per row. Please move all the way to the left and wait for me or Anna to make sure your safety belt is secured.
