Growing up,playing hockey with her brothers and the boys in the area, Rheaume learned pretty quickly that, despite her abilities, she was often cut from teams simply because she was a girl. Although it was frustrating for the youngster, she was not deterred. She continued to work hard and develop her skills to prove she could compete with the boys.

It didn't take long for her to make a name for herself. In 1984, she became the first girl to play in the famed Quebec International Pee-Wee Hockey Tournament.

When the Tampa Bay Lightning,a National Hockey League(NHL)team came calling the following year,it was an opportunity Rheaume could not pass up. When Rheaume arrived in Tampa Bay,she remembers there was a big bouquet of flowers waiting for her in her dressing room, along with a card. "It was from a radio station in Montreal and the card said go further, good luck to you, we're all behind you and you're not alone," she said. "When I got that, I realized a lot of people were pulling for me to be successful." It was at that point that the significance of the game began to dawn on her.

Although her experience with the NHL was brief,Rheaume inspired countless girls to pursue their hockey dreams. Almost twenty-eight years later, and she's still doing exactly that. Today, Rheaume is the head coach of the 12U Little Caesars Girls in Detroit. "I always tell my players to follow their dreams no matter what the dream is and to believe in themselves,"Rheaume said."Hard work and never giving up is what can make you succeed."

The beauty of a single pheasant's feather(野鸡羽毛)caught Nick Orr's eye —and inspired him to produce something unique.

The art of the miniaturist(微型画画家)invites us to look at the familiar in a new way by re-imagining it on a different scale.

This extraordinary inversion of the beauty of birds in flight expressed microscopically(微观地)through sculpting a sole flight feather came about by chance Orr explains:"One day my daughter asked for some pheasant's feathers. It made me look at them and see how beautiful they were and I thought what a waste not to create something with them."

Having had his 10% of inspiration,Orr now had to go through 90% of perspiration(汗水)to find a way to work with feathers. Orr said,"I played around with various ideas and nothing really worked, and I was holding a bunch and started cutting them to shape and to my surprise they didn't fall apart."

It is as difficult to design the feather as it is to cut it out. The feather is my canvas and it is such a small canvas to work on-less than 3cm—and a very particular shape. Everything I depict must fit into that.”

“I see birds so differently now. Now I see the feathers first and then see the bird. I will think about how I can recreate it on a feather.”

Each individual feather is treated differently, with the feather itself playing a major part in the design of the eventual image."Once I have an idea for a picture,I will start to sketch an overall outline on paper,at the same time as thinking about how it will fit a particular feather.I love the idea that I take a feather from a bird that most people think of as the ugliest on the planet and turn it into something beautiful.”

And that's at the heart of Orr's work —to make us see what we normally miss.

28.How did Orr begin to work on his feather art works?

A.His whole family attempted to perfect a feather.

B.His daughter was crazy about the beautiful feathers.

C.He accidentally discovered the beauty of the feathers.

D.He always thought these feathers perfect medium.

29.What does Orr think of the work with feathers?

A.He believes inspiration and perspiration are of the same importance.

B.He thinks it of the same difficulty to design the feather as to shape it.

C.He finds it too difficult to cut a bunch of feather into different shapes.

D.He imagines the familiar single feather in the same way as people do.

30.Which of the following can best describe Orr?

    A.imaginative & persistent                B.generous & skilled

    C.talented&caring                       D.curious & hardworking

31.What's the heart of Orr's work?

A.He can see what we normally miss on the planet.

B.He can see the feathers first and then see the bird.

C.He can turn the ugliest bird into something beautiful.

D.He can turn different feathers into different art works.

There's a new AI bot in town: ChatGPT, and you'd better pay attention, even if you aren't into artificial intelligence. ChatGPT is an AI chatbot system that OpenAI released in November to show off and test what a very large, powerful AI system can accomplish. You can ask it countless questions and often will get an answer that's useful. For example, you can ask it encyclopedia questions like, "Explain Newton's laws of motion." You can tell it, "Write me a poem," and when it does, say, "Now make it more exciting."You ask it to write a computer program that'll show you all the different waysyou can arrange the letters of a word.

ChatGPT is a big deal. The tool seems pretty knowledgeable in areas where there's good training data for it to learn from. It's not all-knowing or smart enough to replace all humans yet,but it can be creative, and its answers can sound downright authoritative. A few days after its launch, more than a million people were trying out ChatGPT. And it's becoming big business. In January, Microsoft pledged to invest billions of dollars into OpenAI, saying it'll build features into cloud services. OpenAI announced a $20 per month ChatGPT Plus service that responds faster and gets new features sooner.

It's an AI that's trained to recognize patterns in vast series of text harvested from the internet, then further trained with human assistance to deliver more useful, better dialog. The answers you get may sound reasonable and even authoritative, but they might well be entirely wrong, as OpenAI warns. Sometimes, helpfully, it'll specifically warn you of its own shortcomings. For example, when I asked it who wrote the phrase "the squirming facts exceed the squamous mind," ChatGPT replied, "I'm sorry, but Iam not able to browse the internet or access any external information beyond what I was trained on." (The phrase is from Wallace Stevens' 1942 poem Connoisseur of Chaos.)

The fact that it offers an answer at all, though, is a notable development in computing. Computers are famously literal, refusing to work unless you follow exact syntax and interface requirements. Large language models are revealing a more human-friendly style of interaction, not to mention an ability to generate answers that are somewhere between copying and creativity.

    32. Which of the following can be a subtitle for the first paragraph?

    A. What is ChatGPT?

    B. What are the limits of ChatGPT?

    C. What kind of questions can you ask?

    D. Why is ChatGPT blowing everyone's mind?

    33. What made ChatGPT a big deal?

    A. More than a million users.

    B. Investment of billions of dollors.

    C. Its ability to generate creative answers.

    D. The bright future promised by Microsoft.

    34. We can infer the purpose of example in Paragraph Three is to

    A. Draw people's attention to OpenAI

    B. Reveal the weakness of ChatGPT

    C. Explain work pattern of the system

    D. Show the methods of training ChatGPT

    35. Which of the following best describes the author's attitude towards ChatGPT?

    A.Opposed.        B.Critical.          C.Supportive.       D.Objective.

    第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)

An afternoon nap could improve your cognitive abilities

Taking an afternoon snooze could keep your brain sharp, a new study has said.

Adults aged 60 and older who took afternoon naps showed signs of better mental agility(敏捷)compared to those who didn't nap, according to a study published in General Psychiatry earlier this week.

Researchers analyzed napping habits in 2214 older Chinese people and measured their cognitive (认知的)abilities using several cognitive tests.

The participants were divided into two categories.36_____.The study defined naps as a period of sleep taken after lunch lasting between five minutes and two hours.

    Nappers scored higher

Participants took the Mini-Mental State Examination and the Beijing version of the Montreal Cognitive Assessment, both of which test for memory, language and other cognitive abilities. 37_____,said lead study author Cai Han, geriatric psychiatrist

In every category the analysis was listed in the study.Nappers tested statistically higher on average compared to their non-napping counterparts.

"This study found that a proper nap is beneficial to the maintenance of cognitive function. 38_____."Han said.

    Many factors can affect sleep

39_____, said Dr. David Neubauer, associate professor in the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine.Daily routines, medication use, environmental factors, lifestyle choices and sleep disorders can all play a role in how frequently someone takes a nap, he said.

The study didn't gather specific data on the length of time each participant took a nap within the five-minute-to-two-hour range or what time in the afternoon they slept.

    Here's how to power nap

Neubauer recommended taking a shorter "power nap" of up to 20 minutes to decrease the chances of transitioning into slow-wave sleep.40_____.

Naps should also be taken earlier in the afternoon to limit their possible negative impact on the following night's sleep, he said.

    A. Thus we encourage the elderly to take a proper nap.

    B. Sleeping behaviors can be affected by a multitude of factors.

    C. They were those who took regular naps and those who didn't.

    D. Napping must be a healthy part of an older adult's day.

    E. It makes people feel groggy(昏沉的)when they wake up.

    F. Results showed that napping positively affected older adults' mental abilities.

    G. Older individuals who want to preserve their cognitive functioning should prioritize nightmare sleep.

    【参考范文】

Tu Youyou, the first female Chinese scientist to receive a Nobel Prize, is the role model in my heart.

After graduating from university, she acquired a broad knowledge of both Chinese and Western medicine through constant learning. Determined to find a cure for malaria, she referred to numerous ancient books of traditional Chinese medicine. After working tirelessly and going through many failures, she eventually discovered artemisinin, the world’s most effective drug for fighting malaria, thus saving millions of lives all over the world.

Tu Youyous life story tells me that under no circumstances shall we acknowledge defeat and that success will belong to those who insists on trying.

W: Honey, this road is very steep. Please slow down and drive more carefully.

    M: OK. Don’t worry, honey. I’m experienced.

W: Well, it’s good to be careful. Besides, it’s raining now.

    Text 3

M: Excuse me, where are we going next?

W: We’re going to Sunset Road next. We’ll spend two hours at a museum there. Then we’ll eat at a restaurant. Now let’s get on the bus.

    M: OK.

    Text 4

W: John, do you like listening to music in your leisure time?

M: Not really. I used to lie on the sofa watching TV, and I gained weight easily. Now when I’ve some time of my own, I like shooting some hoops(打篮球). It is good exercise and gives me some time out of the house.

    Text 5

M: Mum, can I use the car? I’m going to the movies. There is no bus stop nearby.

W: But your dad has the car. Why don’t you walk to the cinema? It’s close, and it’s a lovely autumn evening.

M: It sounds like a good idea.

    Text 6

M: Amy, I heard you went to a cooking contest this morning. Why did you go to such a contest? Just to have some fun?

W: No. ⑥The winner could receive 300 dollars. I really wanted to win so I could buy a new cellphone.

    M: So did you win?

W: No. What the others made didn’t just look great; they tasted great, too.

M: You must be very upset now.

W: Not really. I went to the contest together with my mother. She made something very special and all the judges loved what she made. ⑦She won and she said she’d buy me a new phone with the money she received tomorrow.

    Text 7

W: Mike, what are you watching on the Internet?

M: Some videos on YouTube. I just cannot believe it. ⑧A 90-year-old Japanese woman began to play video games when she was fifty years old, and she has been doing that every day ever since.

    W: Really?

M: Yes. She has played over 200 different video games of all kinds. ⑨Her grandson takes videos of her playing for YouTube. The videos have gotten millions of views. Now her YouTube channel has over 300,000 followers.

    W: That’s really amazing.

M: Yes. Mum, can I play a video game now?

W: No, honey. I think it’s time to do your homework now. (10)Stop watching the videos and get down to your homework.

    M: OK.

    Text 8

W: (11)I visited Magers & Quinn this morning. There were just too many books for kids there. I just didn’t know which one to buy.

M: I never go downtown to buy books.

W: So where do you buy books? On Amazon?

M: No. I usually visit KidsMustRead.com if I want a book for Henry. (12)It is a website that helps parents to encourage their children to read. The search engine on the website creates a list of recommended books that are the right fit for a child’s age, reading level, and interest.

W: That’s very convenient. But are the books good?

M: Yes. The books have been read from cover to cover by its founder, Priya Iyer, and none of the books contain inappropriate content.

W: So are the books on it expensive?

M: Don’t worry. All resources on it are free for parents. You can download them for free.

W: (13)I’ll certainly give it a try tonight.

M: Believe me, you’ll love it!

    Text 9

W: What are you doing, honey?

M: I’m looking at some pictures of some special shoes.

W: Why are they special? I’d like to know more about it.

M: When the pandemic hit,Grigori Lup’s business impacted. (14)He’s a shoemaker in Romania, and his shop relies heavily on custom orders from theaters and opera houses across the country, as well as traditional folk dance ensembles. (15)However, as restrictions eased across Europe, he realized that people didn’t take social distancing seriously — so he came up with the lengthy shoes as a way for them to keep their distance.

W: So can the shoes really keep people apart?

M: Yes. If two people wearing the shoes were facing each other, there would be almost a meter and a half between them.

W: So how many such shoes did he make?

M: Mr. Lup originally made 3 pairs and posted pictures of them on the social media. (16)But soon, he has had orders from around the world, and now features several different styles of social distancing shoes on the social media.

W: How much does such a pair of shoes cost?

M: $115 for one pair, (17)which takes him two days to make.

    Text 10

W: Everyone, do you know why we say “under the weather” when we’re sick? That just sounds strange, right? To find out, I turned to a publication called Farmers’ Almanac. Farmers’ Almanac is not really meant for language learners. (18)It was founded in 1818 to help American farmers understand more about the natural world around them as they grow and harvest their crops. That is still its purpose today. The Farmer’s Almanac website tells about all things weather-related.  (19)To explain, “under the weather”, the website published the writing of Richard Lederer, a word expert. Lederer notes that the expression “under the weather” comes from the language of sailors. Imagine being on a boat on rough seas. The waves continually force the boat up and down and side to side. This continual movement can make many people feel seasick. (19)He writes that “on the high seas when the wind would start to blow hard and the waves became rough, crewmen and travelers would go below deck.” They actually went “under the weather” to find safety, shelter and to avoid becoming seasick. (20)Years ago, only sailors described seasick sailors as being “under the weather.” But today, we use this expression anytime when someone is not feeling well.
