On September 26th, 2022, American ski muntaineer Hilaree Nelsn and her partner Jim Mrrisn reached the summit( 顶 峰 ) f 26,781-ft Manaslu. Sn after Nelsn began ging dwn n skis, she encuntered a small snwslide and was swept away. Tw days later, Mrrisn fund her bdy.
Nelsn, a Natinal Gegraphic Explrer, had a distinctive sense f wanderlust (旅游癖) that pushed her thrugh mre than 40 expeditins(探险) t 16 cuntries. In 2012, she became the first wman t summit tw 8,000-meter peaks, Munt Everest and Lhtse, in a single 24-hur push. Six years later, Nelsn returned t Lhtse t becme the first t ski frm its summit. In 2017, Nelsn and Mrrisn started anther first, f srts—their first muntain expeditin tgether, as a cuple. They succeeded in climbing and skiing a 21,165-ft peak in India knwn as Papsura.
It was anther expeditin, t Hkakab Razi, an islated peak in Myanmar, that helped push Nelsn t reevaluate her ptential. “We wuld nly walk 7 t 10 miles a day, instead f 15 miles, s we culd camp in each village and visit with peple, ding knwledge-sharing sessins,” Taylr Rees recalls, a filmmaker wh cperated with Nelsn. “Hilaree stuck with her visin, in that she wanted t d this expeditin in a different way and see the entire cuntry frm bttm t tp.” The Natinal Gegraphic Sciety pushed Nelsn and her team t the limits f endurance, but they ultimately failed t reach the summit.
Althugh the media wrte it as a failure, Nelsn seemed t cme away frm the experience mre driven than ever t succeed as a Himalayan climber and expeditin leader.
“Hilaree paved the way fr wmen in the adventure sprts space with her refusal t chse between mtherhd and her athletic career. She shwed us that we culd be everything—fllw ur passins as well as raise a family,” says Emily Harringtn, a climber wh jined her n the Hkakab Razi expeditin.

In the late 1970s, archaelgists( 考古学家) uncvered the remains f a wman and a yung dg, her hand resting n the puppy’s chest in a 12,000-year-ld village.
The find is sme f the earliest evidence f the bnd between humans and dgs. But even after years f study researchers are divided n hw this bnd began. Did it arise ver thusands f years, as early dgs became tamer(驯服的) and mre accustmed t human behavirs? Or was this fire already burning in the ancestrs f dgs: the gray wlf?
Christina Hansen Wheat, a behaviral eclgist at Stckhlm University, and wrkmates hand-raised 10 gray wlves frm the time they were 10 days ld. When the animals were 23 weeks ld, a caregiver led them ne at a time int a mstly empty rm. Over the curse f several minutes, the caregiver exited and entered the rm, smetimes leaving the wlf alne, smetimes leaving it with a cmplete stranger. The team repeated the experiment with 12 23-week-ld Alaskan huskies(哈士奇), which they’d raised similarly since puppyhd.
Fr the mst part, the scientists saw few differences between the wlves and the dgs. When their caregiver
entered the rm, bth species scred 4.6 n a five-pint scale f “greeting behavir”—a desire t be arund the human. When the stranger entered, dg greeting behavir drpped t 4.2 and wlf t 3.5, n average, suggesting bth animals made a distinctin between the persn they knew and the ne they didn’t. It’s this distinctin that the team cunts as a sign f attachment.
In additin, dgs barely paced—a sign f stress—during the test, while wlves paced at least part f the time. Hwever, the wlves stpped pacing almst entirely when a stranger left the rm and their caretaker returned. Hansen Wheat says that’s never been seen befre in wlves. It culd be a sign, she says, that the animals view the humans wh raised them as a “scial buffer”.
Fr her, that’s the mst interesting part f the study. “If this is true, this srt f attachment is nt what separates dgs frm wlves,” she says. In ther wrds, it didn’t have t be bred int them by humans, but culd have been the seed we selected fr, and then strengthened ver thusands f years.
What’s the purpse f Hansen Wheat’s experiment?
T find ut what makes gray wlves and dgs different.
T explain the reasns why humans raised dgs frm ancient times.
T argue gray wlves after being tamed are easier t keep than dgs.
T prve whether gray wlves can make dglike attachment t peple.
What d we knw abut Hansen Wheat’s experiment frm paragraph 3 and 4?
Researchers began t raise gray wlves frm their birth.
Researchers used equal numbers f gray wlves and dgs.
Gray wlves felt mre stressful than dgs when a stranger came.
“Greeting behavir” f the tw animals was significantly different.
What d the underlined wrds “scial buffer” in paragraph 5 mean?
A reminder f feeding.B. A sign f scial attachment.
C. A surce f cmfrt and supprt.D. A warning f stpping pace.
What will Hansen Wheat prbably agree with accrding t the last paragraph?
Dgs are mre attached t humans than gray wlves.
It is the attachment t humans that sets gray wlves apart frm dgs.
The attachment between dgs and humans is the result f being tamed.
The attachment t humans plays a rle in the chice f dgs r gray wlves.

The number f fish caught just utside a recently expanded marine(海洋) prtected area in Hawaii has risen. It is a sign that quadrupling(四倍) the size f the reserve in 2016 may have shred fish ppulatins in the regin.
When the Marine Natinal Mnument arund Hawaii was enlarged t 1,510,000 square kilmeters, marine cnservatinists arund the wrld rejiced.
Fishers may have felt differently, hwever, as fishing inside the area is nt allwed. Yet by creating a space fr dwindling tuna ppulatins t recver, supprters argued, the reserve wuld benefit fisheries as well.
As ppulatins inside the reserve bundaries steadily increased, they predicted, the fish wuld spill(溢出) ver int the surrunding areas, increasing the amunt f tuna available t catch.
Prving that is tricky, hwever, as tuna can’t be cunted directly. Their numbers may rise r fall fr a variety f reasns ther than the expansin f a reserve. But the new study, published in Science this week, strngly suggests the number f fish caught just utside the MPA is higher nw than it used t be.
Alan Friedlander, chief scientist fr the Natinal Gegraphic Sciety’s Pristine Seas prject, calls the study a “very careful and strict test f spillver frm marine prtected areas.”
Imprtantly, says Jhn Lynham, an envirnmental ecnmist at the University f Hawaii and ne f the study’s authrs, the increase in tuna catches near the reserve held up even when lking at the average numbers caught by particular fishers. This shws the effect is nt due t mre effective crews nw fishing lcal waters, he explains. T accunt fr effrt, catch numbers were divided by the ever-increasing number f fishing hks in the area.
Lynham and clleagues fund the catch per hk increased ver the 10 years f the study. Fishers were catching n average six mre yellwfin and five mre bigeye tuna per year after the expansin than befre.
“That last ne, especially, was a surprise,” says Lynham, “because it is ecnmically much mre imprtant, and there were fewer indicatins f an increase.”
What is the first paragraph mainly abut?
The rising number f fish caught is a sign f a well-reserved area.
Enlarge the size f reserve may cntribute t the increasing f fish ppulatin.
The number f fish caught has risen t quadrupling(四倍) the size f that in 2016.
Fish catching utside the reserve des gd t the expanded marine prtected area.
Hw did fishers feel when the reserve annunced expanded?
They felt jyful.B. They felt different.C.They felt unpleasant.D. They felt excited.
Hw d the researchers prve the tuna ppulatin has increased?
By figuring the average catch per hk in the area.
By summing up the catch f mare effective crews.
By lking at the numbers caught by particular fishers.
By detecting the number f tuna ppulatin in the surrunding area.
Which can be a suitable title fr the text?
Tuna ppulatin embraces a bst.
Marine Prtected Areas Help Fisheries.
Lcal fisheries hld a prmising future.
Tuna ppulatin can be cunted scientifically.
