    (A)

The tuming point of my life was when I chose to give up my business job and study music. My parents shared my love of music. However, they didn't think it was a good choice that I took up music as a job. Considering my family background, this was understandable in deed. My grandfather had taught music for nearly forty years at Spring Hill College in Mobile, and though he was much loved by his students, he didn't earn enough to support his large family. Life was uneasy for us. As a result of this example in the family, my parents strongly asked me to go to the college instead of a conservatory (音乐学) of music even if I loved my violin and spent most of my spare time on it. And I gave in because of their great expectation.

Before my graduation from Columbia, the family ran into some money problems and I felt it was my duty to leave college and take a job. That was why I took a business job, which I always consider as the wasted years. I went into it for money, for being able to help the family. Money is all I go out of it. It was not enough. I felt that life was passing me by. Work without love really makes me feel like a dead-alive person.

My wish was to save enough to leave and then go to Burope to study music. I continued to make money, and finally, bit by bit, I earned enough to make myself able to go abroad. The family fnally got out of the trouble. I felt like a free man and sailed for Europe. I stayed for four years, worked harder than ever and enjoyed every minute of it.

“Enjoyed”is too soft a word. I walked on air. I can enjoy my own life. When I broke away from the business world, it was against the advice of my friends and family. They think that success is money, so the thought of giving up a good job for hobbies and dreams is foolish. But ifI had stayed in business, I do not believe I would have made a success of living. I would have lost all those inner satisfactions, which money can never buy.

    26. The writer used his grandpa's example in the 1st paragraph in order to _________.

    A. show how much his grandpa was loved by his students

    B. tell to be a musician wasn't a good choice for the writer

    C. explain why his parents didn't want him to take up music as a job

    D. thank his parents' support for studying in the conservatory of music

    27. Why did the writer leave college and take a business job in Paragraph 2?

    A. Because he wanted to waste his life time.

    B. Because his family was in great need of money.

    C. Because he loved to do a business job very much.

    D. Because he was going to graduate from the college.

    28. From the underlined sentence “I walked on air” in the last paragraph, what can we infer about the writer?

    A. He felt pity for beginning a new life.

    C. He couldn't make a success of living.

    C. My successful business job

    D. My study experience in Europe

Smartphones are getting boring. The new models are either a bit faster or have nicer cameras, but they are basically no different from the ones already in our pockets. This is why scientists are hoping, and working for something new, something that will change our lives just as greatly as smartphones do. At the moment, the next invention might be smart glasses.

Just imagine. Instead of having to pick up your phone and look at the screen, all of the information you need simply appears just in front of you, in your glasses. Satellite navigation (导航) directions would appear right there on the road. And your smart glasses could guide you to the right shelf in the supemarket!

Smart glasses could also be used in industry. They could show engineers the instructions they need to fix things more quickly. A doctor could carry out a huge operation, guided in real time by someone on the other side of the world.

This may not happen. But most of the technologies to invent them are already there. For example, one key technology is called AR, which can make digital 3D objects appear as if they are part of the real world. We've used it a lot on our video call. Similarly, huge progress has been made in spatial (空间的) audio. This is when a sound is made to give it a sense of place, like what you hear in an empty room. Some high-end earphones can already do that. Future glasses will of course need to recognize your voice to do tasks. This technology has been widely used in our daily life.

So, why aren't we all wearing smart glasses yet? So far, no one has invented a good way to send images of our world onto glasses. However, with the rapid development of technology, smart glasses could arive much sooner than we think.

    34. Why does the writer mention smartphones in Paragraph 1?

    A. To start a story.      B. To explain an idea.

    C. To introduce a topic.     D. To discuss a problem.

    35. What are Paragraphs 2 and 3 mainly about?

    A. When smart glasses might be made.

    B. Where smart glasses could be used.

    C. Why smart glasses should be changed.

    D. How smart glasses would give directions.

    36. Which of the following technologies needs to be improved to invent smart glasses?

    A. Making spatial audio.     B. Recognizing voices.

    C. Creating digital 3D objects.   D. Sending images onto glasses.

    37. How might the writer feel about the future of smart glasses?

    A. Bored.   B. Satisfied.  C. Confident.   D. Uncertain.

     (D)

    Growing Potato Plants

    Things prepared:

    a potato that has sprouts

    a flower pot with soil

    a camera to record progress

    Observation:

    Day One

The color of the soil looks darker because I have just watered it. In the center of the pot, I can see a tiny sprout that has grown from the potato under the soil. I'll call it Buddy. Buddy is green and yellow. I wonder how fast it will grow.

    Day Six

Without much change in the past six days, I finally see some new progress on Buddy as it has grown taller. It's exciting to see new life like this. I hope Buddy can grow faster.

    Day Eleven

Buddy is getting larger! Three more new sprouts have grown around Buddy! Green leaves have grown on the new sprouts, but they have not fully grown yet. I guess I need to be a bit more patient.

    Day Thirteen

Buddy continues to grow taller. The leaves on the new sprouts have grown a bit. I'm also glad to see more new sprouts that have grown from under the soil.

    Day Fifteen

Finally, the leaves on the other sprouts are 3 cm tall. They're so green. I hope they will soon grow into new potatoes.

    What I have learned:

It's really great to grow potatoes. During these ffteen days, I have leamed that growing potato plants needs plenty of water. If the soil is dry, the potato won't grow. The temperature needs to be right. If it is too cold, it won't grow, either.

I feel that growing plants is just like trying to succeed with anything in life. It takes not only time, but also lots of efforts and patience.

    38. The reading material is a/an _______.

    A. experiment report    B. scientific story

    C. potato advertisement    D. biological news

    39. What can we know from the text?

    A. “Buddy” grew very fast in the first six days.

    B. There weren't any more new sprouts on the 13 day.

    C. Plenty of water is necessary for growing potato plants.

    D. The writer got new potatoes on the fifeenth day of the experiment.

    40. What has the writer learned ftom the experiment?

    A. Old habits die hard.     B. Rome wasn't built in one day.

    C. Action speaks louder than words.  D. Knowledge comes from questioning.

    2022年广东省广州市增城区中考一模英语试题

    阅读理解(共15小题;每小题2分,满分30分)

    阅读下列短文,从各题所给的ABCD项中,选出最佳选项,并在答题卡上将该选项涂黑。

    A

I don’t remember the exact date when I met Marty for the first time. Like a lot of people who want to get through a checkout line, I found my thoughts on speed, nothing more. The line I was standing in wasn’t moving as quickly as I wanted, and I glanced toward the cashier(收银员), who was busy receiving money from customers. He was an old man in his sixties. I thought, well, it probably took him a little longer to get the jobs done. For the next few minutes I watched him. He greeted every customer before he began scanning the things they were buying. Sure, his words were the usual, “How are you doing?” But he did something different—he actually listened to people. Then he would respond to what they had said and talk with them briefly.

I thought it was strange, but I guessed I had been used to people asking me how I was doing simply out of a conversation without thinking. Usually, after a while, you don’t give any thought to the question and just say something back quietly.

This old cashier seemed sincere(真诚的)about wanting to know how people were feeling. Meanwhile, the high-tech cash register rang up their purchases and he announced how much they had to pay. When customers handed money to him, he pushed the appropriate keys, the cash drawer popped open, and he counted out their change.

    Then magic happened.

He placed the change in his left hand, walked around the counter to the customers, and extended his right hand in an act of friendship. As their hands met, the old cashier looked the customers in the eyes. “I want to thank you for shopping here today,” he told them. “Have a great day. Bye-bye.” The looks on the faces of the customers were priceless.

Now it was my turn. I took a look at the name tag on his red waistcoat, the kind experienced Wal-Mart cashier wore. It read, “Marty.”

Marty told me how much I should pay and I handed him some money. The next thing I knew he was standing beside me, offering his right hand and holding my change in his left hand. His kind eyes locked onto mine. Smiling, and with a firm handshake…

26While the author stood in the checkout line, she felt ________.

    Acomfortable Bpuzzled Cimpatient Dembarrassed

27In the author’s opinion, when people were greeting the cashier, they actually wanted to ________.

Ashow their politeness Btalk about unimportant topics

Cfind a person to talk to Dshow their happiness to see him

28Why did the author think Marty special?

AHe showed great interest in customers’ personal life.

BHe spent as much time as possible serving customers.

CHe was patient with all the questions from customers.

DHe expressed his sincerity while giving back the change.

29What can we infer from the passage?

    AMarty was a talkative man.

BMarty cared a lot about what he did.

CThe author failed to get along well with others.

DThe author was dissatisfied with such a waste of time.

    B

Isaac Newton was born on Christmas Day, 1642. From the very first Newton was very much interested in the mysteries of nature. Why did objects move? Why could we see that stones rolled down hills, wind blew leaves along the ground, and heavy objects fell to the earth when dropped?

At the age of twenty-three, Isaac Newton moved from Cambridge to his country home. There, his thoughts turned to the problems of motion (运动定律). As Newton himself later told the story, he was sitting in the garden one evening, thinking, when he noticed a falling apple. The apple set him to wondering about the movement of falling objects.

It occurred to him that the force which caused fruit to fall from trees worked as well at greater distances from the center of the earth—on top of buildings or even on top of mountains. Perhaps, thought Newton, this same force reached out much farther still, even to the moon. Newton began to search for a mathematical expression of his idea.

In 1669, Newton became a professor of mathematics at Cambridge. Three years later, he joined the Royal Society. Before long, Newton began again to study the problems of motion. At last, he seemed to have solved the main difficulties, but he did not publish his findings at once.

Only in 1687 did he at last publish his new theory. Newton’s great work, The Mathematical Principles of Natural Philosophy, marked the success of the Scientific Revolution. Newton put the famous three laws of motion in it. Newton was soon recognized as the leader of English science. In 1703, he became the president of the Royal Society.

Science was never quite the same after Newton’s discoveries. No wonder that the eighteenth-century poet Pope, looking back at Newton’s work, wrote: Nature and Nature’s laws lay hid in night; God said, Let Newton be!—And all was light.

Newton, however, never rested on his fame (名望). He continued to work and study. In his last years, he once said to a friend, “I do not know what I may appear to the world, but to myself I seem to have been only like a boy, playing on the seashore, and now and then finding a smoother pebble (鹅卵石) or a prettier shell, while the great ocean of truth lay undiscovered before me.”

30Where did Newton begin to turn to the problems of motion?

AAt home. BAt Cambridge. COutside the garden. DOn top of a building.

31The underlined word “it” in Paragraph 5 refers to ________.

Athe Royal Society Bthe success of the Scientific Revolution

CNewton’s new theory DThe Mathematical Principles of Natural Philosophy

32In what order did the following events happen to Newton?

    a. He became curious about the movement of falling objects.

    b. He published his new theory.

    c. He joined the Royal Society.

    d. He showed great interest in the mysteries of nature.

    e. He was recognized as the leader of English science.

    Ad-a-c-b-e Bd-c-a-e-b Ca-d-c-e-b Da-d-e-b-c

33What can we infer from the last paragraph?

ANewton acted like a little boy. BNewton continued to work for fame.

CNewton liked playing on the seashore. DNewton only focused on working and studying.

China’s Mars rover(火星车)Zhurong, named after the Chinese god of fire, landed safely on Mars on May 15, 2021, making China only the second behind the United States fully succeed.

The 240-kilogram, six-wheeled rover is carried with six scientific instruments, giving it the appearance of a “blue butterfly”. Unlike Perseverance, the American Mars rover, Zhurong needs sunlight to power itself. Now that Zhurong has got down successfully, it is expected to spend the next 90 days mapping the area on Mars, monitoring changes in weather such as temperature and searching for signs of water ice. Zhurong will therefore help build a more complete geological picture of the red planet’s history.

China has successfully landed on the moon three times, and has even brought back lunar rocks to Earth. But landing on Mars is even more difficult. Mars exploration is known for its high risks and difficulties, as well as the uncertainties in the long-distance interstellar(星际)flight. The landing is the most challenging part of it. Around half of Mars exploration missions(任务)failed, and most of them went wrong in the landing process. A Mars landing is often considered as “the seven minutes of terror” because the process is completely autonomous. “The distance is too far away for the spacecraft, so it has to do it all on its own.” said Chen Lan, a scientist in China’s space program. “If something goes wrong, people on earth have no way to help.”

“Mars is the planet in our solar system that we are most likely to live on in the future. That’s why we want to understand it,” Ge, another scientist, said. “The success of Zhurong’s landing will lay the foundation for future Mars missions, including a sample return mission in 2030.”

34There are many jobs that Zhurong is supposed to do EXCEPT ________.

Amapping the Mars Blooking for water

Cstudying the weather Dbringing back lunar rocks to Earth

35What does the underlined word “autonomous” in Paragraph 3 probably mean?

    Atrusted Bprepared Cself-directed Dman-controlled

36Paragraph 3 is mainly about the ________ of Mars exploration.

    Ahistory Bchallenge Cdistance Dprocess

37What’s the purpose of this passage?

ATo show how Zhurong explores Mars.

BTo lay the foundation for future Mars missions.

CTo introduce China’s achievement in exploring Mars.

DTo compare Mars explorations between China and the USA
