第二部分 阅读 (共两节,满分40分)
第一节 (共 15 小题:每小题 2分,满分 30分)
阅读下列短文,从每题所给的 A 、B 、C 和 D 四个选项中,选出最佳选项。
A
“I’ll be there in a few minutes. I’m playing a game with a friend,a guy named Snoopy.”my 15-year-old son shouted from his room.“Oh, what is Snoopy’s real name? ” I asked. “I have no idea,”he said.“Where is he from?”I continued. He responded,“I think somewhere in Canada. Oh, wait, it doesn't even matter because Snoopy just left the game and he has been replaced with a robot.”
“Your friend is replaced by a robot?”“It doesn’t matter, Dad. It happens all the time! The game continues.”My son doesn’t mind playing with a person or a robot, which is typical of gamers these days. I wonder whether the face-to-face experience of friendship that I grew up with will be lost by our children.
Aristotle, the great Greek thinker and educator, has pointed out that shallow friendship is easily formed but also easily abandoned because such bonds(纽带) are weak and uncertain. Deep friendship, by contrast, is when you care for your friend for his sake, not for any benefit you can get. This is selfless friendship. You can have only a couple of these friends because they require lots of time and effort. You must make sacrifices(牺牲) for each other.
Presence in friendship requires "being with" and “doing for” . Perhaps the most typical feature of deep friendship is “doing for”, as my friend has my back in trouble or brings me soup when I’m sick. Only strong bonds have the power to motivate real sacrifices. But it is unclear why online “friends” would bother to do the hard work of friendship. When I asked my students whether they had people in their lives who would bring them soup when they were sick, they laughed at my Stone Age question and said they'd just order soup online.
Digital life fills and absorbs waking life time so that people do not join in example case of friendship, like sports, collective arts, free range childhoods, etc. In this way, digital life produces false friendships.

C. He tried to stop his son from playing with a robot.
D. He could not get along well with his son.
23. What does the underlined word “abandoned” in paragraph 3 mean?
A. Kept B. Reflected. C. Strengthened D. Quit
24. What can be inferred from the text?

B. New generation values friendship a lot more.
C. Strong bonds can be easily formed in digital life.
D. Collective arts contribute a little to producing false friendships.
25. What is the text mainly about?
A. The formation of deep friendship. B. Digitalized friendship.

Diwali is a festival of lights observed in October or November each year in Canada. During the festival, various community groups, businesses, schools and associations celebrate it in different ways. Some companies have Diwali dinners and some communities organize gatherings that feature firework displays, dances, street lighting, and plays.
Many women wear fine jewelry and silk clothing to celebrate Diwali. Some women and girls use Mehendi, a dye decoration which can last a limited time, on their palms, and then they will finally get colorful hand paintings. Many homes that celebrate Diwali have various types of sweets, salty and spiced food as well as Diwali herbs (香料). Various lights, candles and sparklers are lit inside and outside homes, particularly in courtyards, on Diwali. Diwali is not a nationwide public holiday in Canada but it is a prevalent festival celebrated in many towns and cities. There may be traffic jams and parking places may be full in areas where events are held to celebrate Diwali. Some Indian businesses may close early on Diwali.
Diwali is called the "Festival of Lights" and is celebrated to honor Rama, a hero who once fought and won a battle against the demons(恶魔). In the past, people lit their houses to celebrate his victory over demons (light over darkness). At the same time, every household did careful and complete cleaning at home in advance. It is believed that the goddess of happiness and good fortune, Lakshmi travels around the Earth on this day and enters the house that is pure, clean, and bright.
Diwali celebrations may vary in different communities but its spiritual meaning is generally "the awareness of the inner light". As the word "Deepavalt" means "a row or cluster of light", the festival represents the victory of righteousness and the lifting of spiritual darkness.

Eliana Yi dreamed of pursuing piano performance in college, never minding that her fingers could not reach the length of an octave (八度音阶). Unable to fully play many works by musicians including Beethoven and Brahms, she tried anyway — and in her determination to spend hours practicing one Chopin composition, wound up injuring herself.
The efforts of Professor Carol Leone from Southern Methodist University (SMU) are changing all that: twenty years ago, the school became the first major university in the U.S. to introduce smaller keyboards into its music program, leveling the playing field for Yi and other
piano majors.
Yi, 21, tried one of the smaller keyboards, “I remember being really excited because my hands could actually reach and play all the right notes.” she said.
For decades, few questioned the size of the traditional piano. For those with small hand spans(掌距), it's difficult to properly play many works of Beethoven and Brahms. Those who attempt to play them either get used to skipping notes or risk injury with repeated play. Leone is familiar with such challenges. Born into a family of musicians, she favored classical music and pursued piano despite her small hand span, and earned a degree as a doctor in musical arts.
The idea of smaller keyboards first met resistance from some traditionalists. Leone also said that when she raised the issue with one Viennese professor, he told her there were already too many pianists anyway.
Though such resistance is fading, there are some very traditional people who think of piano as a competitive thing. Leone said, “ This is art, not sport. It's about making as much beautiful art as possible, and we should give everybody the opportunity to do that.”
31. Why did Elena Yi find it hard to play a Chopin concerto so well?
A. Her hand spans were small. B. The traditional piano was out of tune.
C. Her fingers got injured. D. It was time-consuming.
32.What is paragraph 4 intended to do?
A. Provide some advice for pianists. B. Introduce a new topic for discussion.
C. Add some background information. D. Summarize the previous paragraphs.
33.What is the Viennese professor's attitude towards smaller keyboards?
A. Positive. B. Unclear. C. Objective. D. Negative.
34. What can we infer from Carol Leone’s words in the last paragraph?
A. Smaller keyboards have not been fully accepted yet.
B. Smaller keyboards are more popular among young people.
C. Piano is as competitive as sport.
D. Piano doesn’t require great talent.
35.Which is the most suitable title for the text?
A. Traditional Piano: A Competitive Thing
B. Yi's Road to a Brilliant Artist
C. The Story Behind Smaller Keyboard Pianos
D. Hard-working SMU Professor
第二节 (共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)
阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
Language is part of our daily lives, no matter where we live in the world. Similarly, music is a part of many people’s lives. 36 Here are some of their similarities.
Both language and music have a writing system
37 Similarly, we use notes to keep a record of music. Just as you are reading this collection of letters on the paper and find meaning in it, musicians read notes and create meaning in the form of music which we can hear. By reading pieces of text or music, we are able to share experiences through time. For example, we can read the ideas or hear the composition of someone who lived hundreds of years ago, which is really quite exciting.
38
You can make a good guess at where someone is from by listening to the language they use. In the same way, we know that styles of music are different around the world, which gives us the opportunity to explore many different cultures through their music and providing us with music for every situation.
Both share emotion
How do you know that I am angry? Of course, you may be able to see it in my face, but you will know for sure through my words. 39 Music can show you exactly how the composer was or is feeling, and allows us to share that emotion. When you feel happy, you might want to sing and dance to a happy song. 40
A. Both language and music play a huge role in our lives.
B. Similarly, music can sound angry, sad or happy.
C. Both vary with culture.
D. Different culture makes different music.
E. We use music to express emotions, combining it with language in form of lyrics(歌词).
F. In contrast, you have probably also listened to sad music when you feel down.
G. In English we record language using the alphabet, which is a collection of letters.

Good morning!
My name is Lihua. I’m very glad to stand here to give you a speech about dreams. A dream is like a light tower, showing the way when one is sailing on the sea, without which one may not know where he goes or even gets lost in life. Therefore, have a dream and that really matters!
As for me, I am determined to be a teacher, devoting myself to education. For the purpose of achieving my dream, firstly, reading a variety of books is an effective way for me, which could enable me to broaden my horizons. Secondly, success can be achieved with anything but laziness. It’s a must for me to accumulate related knowledge and get well prepared.
Hopefully, all of us will stick to our dreams and have a promising future.
That’s all, thank you!

W: Wow, I wish I were there. I’m going to have to see them on their next tour, in the summer. Did you get their latest CD?
M: No, I didn’t need to. I already had it. I did get this T-shirt though, look!
W: That’s so cool, I love what they did with the logo.
M: You can have it if you want.
W: Wow, Sam! Really? Thanks so much!
Text 9
M: Amy, did you study foreign languages at secondary school?
W: Yes, I did.
M: Which ones did you study?
W: Well, I did French for three years, then I did German for four years, and I studied Spanish for a year during my lunch break.
M: And how much French can you remember?
W: Not much!
M: Well, I’ve just read this article about the state of language learning in schools in the UK, and it isn’t looking good. It says that adults only remember about few words from the languages they studied at school.
W: So, what happens when people are abroad? Do they practice the language?
M: Not at all. The article suggests that people often choose not to go on holiday to countries where they have to worry about language problems.
W: That’s probably because they’re too lazy to learn a language.
M: No. The article says it’s because they’re too embarrassed to try and speak it.
W: OK. So which languages do students study at school today?
M: There’s a list here. It says 65% of students study French, 25% study German, 22% Spanish, and 2% Italian.
W: And what are schools going to do about the problem?
M: Well, first of all, they’re going to introduce language classes for children in primary schools. And then they’re going to start offering languages from outside Europe.
Text 10
W: And our final story on tonight’s programme is about an Australian diver who has survived a shark attack. 46-year-old Eric Nerhus was under the water at the time, and he didn’t see a great white shark swimming towards him. Mr. Nerhus’s head, shoulders, and one of his arms ended up in the shark’s mouth, but, fortunately, he was wearing a heavy metal jacket. When the shark tried to bite the man in half, its teeth hit the jacket and not his body. Mr. Nerhus knew he had to do something, so he felt for the shark’s eye with the hand of his other arm. When he found it, he surprised the animal by pressing his fingers into its eye. The shark reacted by opening its mouth, giving Mr. Nerhus a chance to escape. Despite his injuries, Eric managed to swim up to the surface of the water. His son pulled him onto his boat, and took him quickly to the shore. Meanwhile, another friend called the emergency services. Mr. Nerhus was flown to hospital by helicopter. He had deep cuts all over his body and a broken nose, but he was very lucky to be alive. Attacks by great white sharks usually result in death because of their size and strength. The shark that attacked Mr. Nerhus was over three meters long.
