A hobby can be almost anything that a person likes to do in his free time. Hobbyists keep pets, build model ships, watch birds, climb mountains, and grow flowers. Hobbyists also paint pictures, go to concerts, play and perform on musical instruments. They collect everything from books to butterflies and from coins to stamps.
People have hobbies because these activities offer enjoyment, friendship, knowledge and relaxation. Sometimes they even make some money by following a hobby. Hobbies help people relax after hard work, and provide a balance between work and play. Hobbies also offer more interesting activities for persons who have retired. Anyone, rich or poor, old or young, sick or well, can follow an interesting hobby.
Hobbies can also help to keep a person's mental and physical health. Doctors have found that hobbies are helpful for sick people to get better from physical or mental illness. Hobbies give them something to do, and offer interests that keep them from thinking about themselves.
In early years, most people were too busy making a living to have many hobbies. But some persons who were free did enjoy hobbies.
People today have more time for hobbies than before. Machines have reduced the time that they must spend on their jobs. More people are retiring at an earlier age than before. Those who have developed hobbies never need to worry about what to do with their free hours.

Heavy snow arrived in Beijing, at the beginning of January. Although people found the snow beautiful at first, it quickly started making problems for them. After a whole night and day of heavy snow, the city was covered in white. The thick snow covered everything. At first, people enjoyed looking out their windows at the snow-covered landscape (风景). But safety soon became a problem.
The snow made the roads very slippery, making it dangerous for people to drive. To fix this, the local government asked the city inspectors (检查员) and sanitary workers (环卫工人) to clear the snow off the roads overnight. Thanks to their hard work, traffic was able to go back to normal.
The snow also brought some problems for the city's trees. The snow that fell on the trees branches (树枝) got heavier as it continued to fall, causing some of the trees to break and fall down near roads. People were asked to go outside and shake the snow off the trees to protect them. My family and even my school's headmaster went out and helped to shake the snow off the trees.
But there was some good news, too. We didn't have to go to school because our route (道路) to school might be too dangerous. I went outside to appreciate the beautiful snow and take pictures. Although the heavy snow caused many problems, we still enjoyed it quite a bit.
37. What is the most probable (可能的) time of the heavy snow?

B. The snow caused many problems, but it is good for the trees.
C. The result of heavy snow: problems or good news?
D. The snow only created some problems.

Once there was a bird who realized that his box of valuable coins was missing. So he called the rabbit and the mouse in the forest to help look for the valuable box.
As a good detective (侦探),the mouse was a bit cleverer than the rabbit. After asking the bird all the places he had just been to, he followed the bird's footprint and game to the great tunnel (隧道) under the forest. On entering, he saw Mr. Mole, but he didn't say anything to the mole (鼹鼠) about why he was there. He just carried on looking for the missing coins on his own.
The rabbit was also a great detective. Before long (不久以后),he arrived at the tunnel, too. He was not shy at all. The first thing he did after he arrived was to go and ask the mole if he knew where the coins were. The mole felt very pleased and led the rabbit to the coins. They had been working together for several weeks, and finally, they managed to get the box out of the great tunnel.
So the rabbit and the mole took the coins and were paid for their great work. The mouse, who had been watching all this, learned a lot from it. From then on, he would never allow shyness to ruin (毁坏) all his good work. This way of dealing with a person or thing soon turned him into the best detective in the forest.
Don't be shy. Everyone has some special gift to offer to the world. And never be shy about asking for help when meeting difficulties in different situations. I am sure you'll succeed more easily than before. Here comes my story.

四、任务型阅读(每小题1分,共4分)
阅读下面的短文,根据短文内容,完成表格。(每空限填一词)
Some people succeed (成功),while others may not. This is because some people have certain qualities, which others do not.
The first thing you must remember is that in order to succeed, you must be optimistic (乐观). If you do not expect to win, you will not try as hard as people who do expect to win. You also need to have a clear aim and a reason for doing something because motivation (动机) is a key to getting success. If you do not have an aim, then you won't work hard and put your performance under the microscope (显微镜) to make sure that every detail is right.
Another quality that helps people succeed is creativity-thinking about things in a different way and wondering how others would do the same thing. Think about some successful people you know. They might be successful with a little creativity, but the most successful people are the most creative ones.
Reading is another to success, as it will help you learn about how other people have got success. If you want to learn how to set up a successful business, you should read books about people like Bill Gates and Jerry Yang, who have got amazing success in their areas of business.
Success is yours for the taking! Cheers!
