When you go to a grocery store, you expect to pay for your goods with money. But students at a high school in Texas, US, opened a store that runs on good deeds.
In November, students from Linda Tutt High School in the city of Sanger opened a grocery store that enables students to buy necessities using a point system. The store aims to support families in need.
“In our school, many students are considered economically disadvantaged,” explained Anthony Love, principal of Linda Tutt. “About 3.6 percent of our students are considered homeless. We thought it important to support them and their families and make sure they had food on the table.”
Students earn points by contributing positively to the school. For those students from poor families, the point system has provided a way for them to shop for their families. “They can earn points for doing chores (杂活) around the building or helping to clean,” Love said.
The number of points for each item was actually decided by the students. “So we walked through here and decided that a can of green beans was one point,” said Paul Juarez, the director of First Refuge Ministries.
Juarez said that he hopes the idea gets implemented(实施)in other areas. “It gives us a picture of what can be. So if we can do this inside other schools, it will do a whole lot to help other small towns. ”
In addition to the financial benefits, students also learn about supply management and customer service, and such lessons could prepare them for future jobs. The store practice was also welcomed by Thomas Muir, Sanger’s mayor. “We all had our first jobs and it taught us how to work, and what you got for your work,” he said. “I think this will do that for them too, and meet an immediate need."
    24. Why did the students open the grocery store?
    A. To help students in need. B. To learn to manage money.
    C. To finish their research project. D. To raise money for poor families.
    25. How could the students earn points?
    A. By doing chores at home. B. By shopping for their families.
    C. By doing good deeds at school. D. By volunteering in the community.
    26. What is Juarez’s opinion on the grocery store?
    A. It still has some room for improvement.
    B. It will set a good example to other schools.
    C. It needs financial support from other schools.
    D. It has helped poor families in other small towns.
    27. What is the last paragraph mainly about?
    A. The benefits from the store practice.
    B. The future jobs the students will get.
    C. The methods of doing a job well.
    D. The measures to meet students’ need.
    C
When I was a kid, if someone told me that I would grow up to become a published author and founder of a youth literacy (读写能力)foundation, I would have laughed and kept walking. Even now when I see the title of my latest picture book, My Very Favorite Book in the Whole Wide World, I shake my head, not quite believing that book has my name on it. But the truth is, this story comes from my own personal experience.
It took me a very long time to find my personal reading voice. In Valdosta, Ga., where I grew up, my community promoted two pathways to a better life for little boys like me: being an athlete and being an entertainer. I was no different than the other kids, so I did what felt natural: Play football and overlook school. School presented challenges every day and so did football practice, but overcoming physical adversity (逆境) was on trend with my neighborhood's culture. Reading books not so much.
Fortunately, I went to college. That's where my reading struggles really reared their ugly head. Trips to the grocery store were stressful because there was so much reading involved in the simple act of buying food. I would misread labels and grab the wrong items. Once, I picked up apple sauce thinking it was apple slices. I didn't notice my mistake until I got home and realized that it was my inability to understand the differences in the wording on the labels that caused the mistake. I realized that I needed to make an important decision. If I wanted to be a better version of me, I had to become a stronger reader.
I joined a book club and read every free moment I had. My journey with reading also created a desire in me to inspire others who struggle with reading. So I started a nonprofit Share the Magic Foundation, trying to transform the lives of children living in underserved communities through literacy.
    28. What does the author think of his new book?
    A. It's beyond his expectation. B. It's helpful for youth literacy.
    C. It’s full of humor and wisdom. D. It's an exact record of his early life.
29.What was the root reason for the author’s failure to find his reading voice?
    A. The challenges he met in study. B. The influence of his community.
    C. His dream to be an entertainer. D. His preference for football.
30.What does the underlined phrase “reared their ugly head” in Paragraph 3 mean?
    A. Changed. B. Concluded. C. Surfaced. D. Disappeared.
31.Which of the following best describes the author?
    A. Ambitious and cautious. B. Reflective and warm-hearted.
    C. Creative and stubborn. D. Persuasive and confident.
    D
There are around three million shipwrecks (沉船) sitting on sea beds around the world, and many of them are made of wood—and these underwater wooden islands are actually great habitats for deep sea microbes(微生物), a new study shows. Scientists say these human-made ships are greatly influencing the ecosystems down at the bottom of the oceans, which hasn't been fully recognized before.
Deep sea microbes living on shipwrecks are at the bottom of the underwater food chain, so changes to them could have an effect on other life in the oceans— and, finally, everything living on the land as well.“Microbial communities should be studied because they show how human activities change life in the ocean,” says Leila Hamdan from the University of Southern Mississippi.
Hamdan and her team picked two 19th-century shipwreck sites in the Gulf Mexico for their study. They placed pine(松树)and oak(橡树)blocks around the sites, from right next to the shipwrecks to up to 200 meters away and left the wood there for four months. The wooden blocks were then studied for microbes. Microbial biodiversity changed differently depending on the blocks’ distances to the shipwreck sites, reaching the highest level around 125 meters away. The type of wood made a difference as well with oak more favorable to microbial biodiversity than pine.
Natural hard habitats—trees that have fallen into rivers and the oceans—are already well known for influencing the biodiversity of the water they fall into. What this study shows is that shipwrecks left by humans affect microbial life under the sea, too.“These microbes are finally what allow hard habitats to turn into islands of biodiversity,”says Hamdan.
The team behind this study suggests that other human-made things could be having a similar influence on deep sea microbes.“While our economic activities are increasingly influencing the oceans, scientific discovery is not keeping up with how they shape the biology and chemistry of the deep sea”says Hamdan.“We hope this work will begin a dialogue that leads to research on how built habitats are already changing the deep sea.
    32. What do we know about the habitats provided by the shipwrecks according to the text?
    A. They are human-friendly.
    B. They can be good for the oceans.
    C. They are areas with the richest biodiversity.
    D. They can influence humans in the end.
    33. What blocks near the shipwrecks had the highest level of microbial biodiversity?
    A. The oak blocks 125 meters away. B. The oak blocks 200 meters away.
    C. The pine blocks 125 meters away. D. The pine blocks 200 meters away
    34. What does Hamdan suggest people do in the last paragraph?
    A. Carry out more economic activities.
    B. Study their influence on the deep sea.
    C. Do more work to change the deep sea.
    D. Ban human-made things in the deep sea.
    35. Which is the best title for the text?
    A. Researchers are getting to know shipwrecks.
    B. Shipwrecks are becoming habitats in oceans.
    C. Humans are influencing microbes under the sea.
    D. Shipwrecks are changing life in the deep sea.

Last Saturday, David was taking a walk in the park near his home when he noticed a woman with a boy about eight years old. When David passed them, he heard the woman yell “How stupid you are! You are good at nothing.”David stopped and looked at the little boy. The boy said nothing. He just stood there looking upset.
David was reminded of his English teacher Mrs. Brown in middle school. After he entered middle school, David lacked self-confidence because he was often made fun of by others. He was often told that he was good at nothing, which David believed. But one day it all changed.
One day, in an English writing class, Mrs. Brown asked them to read a novel. They were asked to write a new chapter for the novel after they finished reading the book. A few days later, David handed in his story. He didn’t give it much thought. But the next day, to his surprise, he read a very good comment: well done.
When David read that, he almost shed tears. He never expected to be praised one day. He suddenly gained some self-confidence.
That day after he returned home, he wrote a short story and gave it to Mrs. Brown the next morning. And again he was praised.
David became very interested in writing. He often wrote short stories and asked Mrs. Brown to read them and correct them for him. Mrs. Brown always corrected the mistakes David had made and gave him good suggestions. One year later, David joined the school newspaper and became an editor of it. He was no longer that boy who lacked self-confidence. He became confident and was hopeful about his future.
He succeeded in entering college and he kept writing. Several years after graduating from college, he had his first book published. With some more books coming out, he became a famous writer in his country. And he owed his success to Mrs. Brown’s encouragement. Without her encouragement, his life might be very different now.
    注意:
    1.续写词数应为150左右;
    2.请按如下格式在相应位置作答。
    Paragraph 1:
Inspired by his own life story , David decided to do something for that boy.

    Paragraph 2:
The mother was ashamed when she heard what David said.

    第二节:读后续写
    One possible version:
Inspired by his own life story, David decided to do something for that boy. He went to the woman, who immediately recognized him because she had read his books and seen his pictures before. David started to chat with her. He told her that he had heard what she had said to the boy. Then he told her his life story. In the end, he said, “I couldn’t have become a writer if I had believed I was good at nothing.”
The mother was ashamed when she heard what David said. She realized that she shouldn't have called her son stupid. So she said, “Thank you for your suggestion. I'll never say such things to him again. Instead, I'll find out what he's good at and encourage him.” The woman then left with the boy. Looking at the back of the boy, David was relieved. Would the boy become confident in the future?

W: As my mom went up the stairs, her foot slipped and she fell down. (9) The doctor said that she has to stay in bed for at least a week.
M: I am sorry to hear that. Never mind, we can go next month instead.
W: But you will miss the exhibition if we go there next month. The exhibition is held annually. My father will go to London on business. I can go with him. How about you invite Steven to go with you? He is looking forward to visiting the big city like me. (10)
M: Hmm. Fine, I will talk to Steven about it.
    Text 8
M: Hello, do you remember me? I bought two pairs of gloves here yesterday. (11)
W: Of course, sir. How may I help you today?
M: The gloves are for my parents. I also want to get some souvenirs for myself, my wife and my little brother.
W: Okay. Have you got anything in mind?
M: Yes. I’d like to send a postcard to myself. (12) My father did that whenever he went on a trip.
W: How about this one with a picture of Lake Baikal on it?
M: It looks nice. And how much is this set of Russian nesting dolls?
W: $60. You can’t miss these chocolates. (13) They’re tasty. I bet your brother will like them.
M: Oh, my wife loves sweets as well. Give me two boxes of them. How much? (13)
    W: $25 each. (13)
M: Okay. I’ll pay in cash. (13) Pack them for me, please.
    Text 9(第17题为推断题)
M: Hi, Jane. I was about to call to see if you’re okay.
W: I’m fine, but it seems I’m a bit lost.
M: Where are you right now?
    W: I don’t know. I don’t see any road signs.
M: Is there any building, like a bank or a restaurant?
W: Yeah, there is a hotel called “Tides Inn” in front of me. (14)
M: I think I know where you are. You’re on Bingfield Street.
W: I really have no sense of direction. (15) Have I passed the street you live on?
M: Yeah, I’m afraid you have. Don’t worry. Do you have a map in your car?
W: Yes, it’s right in my hand. And I’ve marked Bingfield Street with my pen.
M: Okay. Now go back the way you came and keep driving until you see a park. Then turn left and go along Hemingford Road. And turn right when you arrive at Offord Stores. My apartment is on Offord Street, next to the store. (16)
W: Okay. I might have to call you again when arriving.
M: Sure. I will be waiting for you downstairs. Be safe.
    Text 10
Bathing may not be your puppy’s favorite activity, but it’s essential to keep its coat clean. Bathing your dog too often or not enough can have consequences for its health and appearance. Knowing how frequently to bathe your dog comes down to its breed, coat and lifestyle. A bad smell is one of the easiest ways to tell your dog needs a bath. However, this isn’t a reliable way, since many dog owners get used to their dogs’ smell over time. (18) It might be time for a bath if your dog has small pieces of dead skin and untidy fur, or scratches themselves more frequently. The most important thing to determine the right bathing frequency for your dog is its coat. (19) Here are some general guidelines to follow. Short-haired breeds: They may only need a bath every three to four months. Long-haired breeds: Dogs with medium to long coats should get a bath every four to six weeks. (20) This is because long-haired breeds tend to pick up more dirt, mud, and bacteria. Hairless breeds: Since they don’t have fur to protect their skin, hairless dogs actually need a bath about once a week.
