一、阅读理解
Since February 2017 it has been against the law to smoke in areas of Queensland national parks.
Where does the ban apply?
Smoking is banned within 10 metres of in-use campsites and any public places such as picnic tables, toilet blocks, visitor information centres, and shelters. Signs have been put up in picnic areas to remind visitors about the rules.
______
Banning smoking ensures that visitors can enjoy fresh air in parks without being exposed to second-hand smoke. Smoking remains a significant cause of preventable death and disease in Australia. Smoke-free public places protect non-smokers from the bad health effects of passive smoke in public areas. Every year in Queensland 3,700 smokers die from smoking-related diseases.
How is the ban enforced(执行)?
There is strong community support for banning smoking in public places. This means most people follow the smoking ban and typically encourage others to do so. The ban is enforced by Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service rangers(护林员) as well as Queensland Health environmental health officers. These officers can provide advice about the smoking ban, issue warnings and on-the-spot fines and respond to possible breaches (违反). To report a possible breach call 137468.
What penalties(处罚) might apply?
Smokers who do not follow a warning to stop smoking in a smoke-free area can be issued with an on-the-spot fine. The highest penalty for someone breaching the ban is twenty penalty units, with an on-the-spot penalty of two penalty units. The current penalty unit amount is $121.90. This amount increases annually. For more information on current penalty amounts call 137468.
Would you like to quit smoking?
To improve your chance of quitting smoking for good, it is a good idea to plan ahead. You may find these tips helpful:
Get support
Quitline’s trained psychologists are available seven days a week to help you through the process of quitting—call Quitline 137848 for free information, practical assistance and support.

Seated on the floor of our garage, our special place of learning, my father laid out a circle of lima beans(利马豆) in front of him. “What are you doing, Daddy?” I asked. “I’m building my community, honey girl! This one is a 45-year-old woman who is a hard worker but a nag (好唠叨的人)! And this one’s a boy of about 12 who can be a real hard worker, too, but is very naughty most of the time!”
One by one, my father described his community members to me while laying them out. A hunter who understood deer better than corn, two young men just learning how to hunt, a beautiful young woman who was fonder of sitting and letting others admire her than of bending to any task...
“Now,” my father said when he was done, “that’s my community! Where’s yours?” “Mine? What do you mean mine?” I asked, wondering if I should ask for more lima beans from my mother. “Well, you can take any member of my community to build your own community,” he said. “Well, I don’t want the 45-year-old woman who nags, but I’ll take the naughty boy. Guess if I can handle my brother I can deal with him!” I replied.
One by one I chose members of my father’s community for my own. I chose every one I thought would get along well, the ones I thought would be nice to live with, and left the others behind.
“Now, it’s harvest time,” my father declared, laying out the tasks that needed doing. “You need two people to walk down the rows of corn and twist off the heads... two to chop down(砍倒) the corn stalks(杆)... four to start processing the corn...” And very soon I ran out of people! “Well,” I said. “Maybe I could add that hard-working woman, even if she does nag! Maybe I could put her and that 12-year-old boy together and that way they’d keep each other busy and get a lot of work done!”
“And maybe I could add... ”
One by one the members of my father’s community found their way into my own, each chosen for some skill lacking in the others, all needed for building a good community!

The Florida manatee(海牛) is mostly grayish or brown, often with algae(海藻) growing on its thick, wrinkled skin. It is perfectly adapted for life in tropical(热带的) waters. The body of the Florida manatee is similar to that of a seal, and its face resembles the face of a walrus(海象) without the tusks(牙). Manatees have unbelievable lung capacity and can stay under water for as long as 15 minutes. Their powerful and flat tails help drive their huge bodies through the water. Florida manatees are typically ten feet in length and weigh over 1,000 pounds.
The Florida manatee is actually a sub-species of the more widespread West Indian Manatee. The Florida manatee summers through much of the East and Gulf coasts. In winter, they may gather in warm waters off the coasts of Florida and Georgia. Manatees rarely survive in water that dips below 68 °F.
Manatees are slow-moving animals. They are even slower to reproduce. Females become mature after 5 to 9 years and have babies every two to five years. Young manatees nurse underwater and stay with their mothers for about two years.
Manatee populations have decreased in America over the last few decades. While natural causes such as disease, red tide, and stress brought on by cold water have certainly had an effect on population, much of the manatee’s decline is likely due to human activity. The destruction of the manatee’s wetland habitats for housing developments has been the primary cause of the animal’s decline. Pollution of coastal waters and many objects into waters exacerbated the problem. Today, however, strict laws have been passed to stop pollution. Many organizations have conducted programs aimed at saving manatees and educating the public. The manatee is the state mammal of Florida, and Sea World has become a driving force in the preservation of “the gentle giant”.
8、What can we know about the Florida manatee?
A. It feeds on algae. B. It lives in warm waters.
C. It has a very delicate skin. D. It has the same tusk as the walrus.
9、Which of the following is TRUE about female manatees?

C. They need at least nine years to grow up.
D. They are responsible for looking for food.
10、What does the underlined word “exacerbated” in the last paragraph mean?
A. Worsened. B. Produced. C. Simplified. D. Postponed.
11、The purpose of the text is to _____.
A. entertain B. advertise C. instruct D. inform
As new technology is introduced, there are many who worry about its influence on our current and future lifestyles—particularly when it comes to jobs. It is a current belief that with the rise of automation and artificial intelligence(AI), many people’s jobs, and therefore their livelihoods, are likely to be lost.
Automation in the workplace is nothing new. Machines have been performing dull tasks on our behalf for years, allowing us to escape many repetitive jobs. In fact, the International Federation of Robotics states that in manufacturing(制造业) on average there are now 74 robots per 10,000 employees. That has risen from 66 in 2015.
A recent report from the McKinsey Global Institute states that nearly two thirds of all jobs could have at least 30% of their activities automated by 2030. However, McKinsey also believes that this new technology will also “create new occupations that do not exist today, much as technologies in the past have done.” As the horse gave way to the car, hostlers(马夫) became mechanics and mechanised manufacturing drove up wages and created more long-term roles than it destroyed.
“It’s an evolution of work,” says Ian Barkin, a robotic process automation specialist. As low-skilled jobs are taken on by AI, people will need to learn new skills. “This calls on us to focus on improving ourselves. Technology can lead to job reductions but it doesn’t have to,” says Barkin.
Whether or not robots and AI will leave us all jobless remains to be seen. Current views on the subject are mixed. Increased automation could indeed lead to a loss of some jobs, but at the same time is likely to create many more as new skills are required. Will they balance out? I’ll get my AI assistant to get back to you on that one.
12、How do many people feel about the influence of AI?
A. Quite confused. B. Quite surprised.
C. A sense of fear. D. A sense of pride.
13、What might be McKinsey’s attitude to the rise of automation?
A. Doubtful. B. Negative. C. Optimistic. D. Ambiguous.
14、What is most important in dealing with AI according to Ian Barkin?
A. The ability to keep learning.
B. The ability to think positively.
C. The ability to take risks in an uncertain future.
D. The ability to adapt oneself to the new environment.
15、Which can best express the author’s view on automation?
A. Every coin has two sides.
B. Where there is life, there is hope.
C. It’s better to do well than to say well.
D. A bad workman quarrels with his tools.

16、How to deal with loneliness at university
University can be a lonely place, with the move away from home, deadlines and the pressure to go out every night. This can affect your mental health. Luckily, there are ways students can help themselves.

Eat and sleep well
There is growing evidence that loneliness is bad for our health, and feeling lonely also leads to unhealthy behavior and an unhealthy diet. ④_____. “When I am lonely I become more anxious and depressed,” says Jones. This brings me to the real reason for my letter, my dear grandson. Your mother tells me that you started smoking some time before and how you are finding it difficult to giving it up. You see, during adolescence I also smoked and became addict to cigarettes. When I was young, I didn't know many about the harmful effects of smoking. An Unforgettable Trip
Our school organized a one-day trip to a small farm last Sunday and we enjoyed ourselves and learned a lot.
At around 9 am, we arrived at the farm on the school bus. Upon arrival, we were warmly welcomed by the kind farm owner and his wife. We were divided into several groups, and then picked fruits, watered vegetables and tasted delicious fruit and vegetables. Moreover, the couple told us about how they started the farm while working, which impressed us a lot.
This outdoor activity was really beneficial for us. Not only did it get us closer to nature, but also taught us the value of hard work.
