Opening a good book can take you on an adventure but sometimes, it's not what's on the pages, but what's been left in them is the most exciting part for Sharon McKellar, a librarian at the Oakland Public Library. She has been collecting mementos left the library for years. Now, she's finally found a use for all those old family photos, notes, coupons, recipes and concert tickets she's collected in books over the years.
McKellar started the "Found in a Library Book" project—an online database of all the thing found in books at the library. "It started out as my personal collection, but I put out a call to other library staff, just to see if anybody had anything they'd be willing to share, and was just totally inundated(淹没) with other people's little collections of all sorts of things they had found," McKellar told CI News.
McKellar has added 370 mementos to the library's online collection—but she said she had a couple hundred more to upload. Many of the mementos are notes and some are book reviews left behind for the next reader: "I loved this book. It stole my heart and made me cry. When you find tearstains, you will know they are mine."
McKellar said that while the origins of the forgotten mementos remain a mystery, some people have recognized items on the online database, "One person named Susan reached out because one of the love notes looked like her parent's handwriting and the kind of notes they used to leave each other," she said.
The project is fairly new, but McKellar hopes it inspires people to dive into books at their local library, "You never know what you'll find. You just have a sense of shared space in community. McKellar said. "I think part of why people are especially excited about that right now is we have obviously been in a fast-paced society. So, it is a way to sort of feel a connection with people who you don't even know through these forgotten objects."
4、What does the underlined word "mementos" refer to in paragraph 1?
A. The adventure stories. B. The forgotten memories.
C.The items found in books. D.The well-designed pages.

D. To enrich the database of her collection.
6、What is implied from Susan's case in paragraph 4?
A. The project aims to find lost relatives.
B. Inspiring love stories impress people a lot.
C.The origins of the mementos remain mysterious.
D. The experience adds to the emotional appeal of the project.
7、What is the possible reason for the popularity of McKellar's project?
A. It helps people find lost objects. B. It inspires people to read widely.
C. It offers a community-based link. D. It brings local libraries back to life.
Most of us don't have any memories from the first three to four year of our lives. And when we do try to think back to our earliest memories, it is often unclear whether they are the real thing or just recollections based on photos or stories told to us. The phenomenon, known as "childhood amnesia," has been puzzling psychologists for more than a century.
It may seem that the reason we don't remember being babies is that babies don't have a fully developed memory. But babies as young as six months can form both short-term and long-term memories. In one study, six-month-olds who learned how to press a lever(操纵杆) to operate a toy train remembered how to perform this action for two to three weeks after they had last seen the toy.
Of course, memory capabilities at these ages are not adult-like—they continue to develop until adolescence. In fact, developmental changes in basic memory processes have been put forward as an explanation for childhood amnesia, and it's one of the best theories we've got so far. These basic processes involve several brain regions and include forming, maintaining and later bringing back the memory.
But this does not seem to be the whole story. Another factor that we know plays a role is language. From the ages of one to six, children progress from the one word stage of speaking to becoming fluent in their native language(s), so there are major changes in their language competence that overlap(重登) with the childhood amnesia period. It is true to some extent that a child's ability to describe an event predicts how well they remember it months or years later.
While there are still things we don't understand about childhood amnesia, it's important to remember that, even if we can't clearly remember specific events from when we were very young, they still influence our behavior. The first few years of life are forgettable and yet powerful in shaping the adults that we become.
8、What does the study mentioned in paragraph 2 show?
A. Babies don't have a fully developed memory.
B. Babies don't suffer from childhood amnesia.
C. Babies can remember things for weeks.
D. Babies can benefit from hands-on learning.
9、Which of the following is one of the best theories concerning childhood amnesia?
A. Babies' brains arc not mature enough.
B. Babics' language skills need developing.
C. Babies cannot go through basic memory processes.
D. Babies rarely experience events that had a big impact.
10、What can we infer from the last paragraph?
A. Specific events from early childhood should be told to children.
B. The first few years of life should be taken seriously.
C. We can overcome childhood amnesia someday.
D. Childhood amnesia is fairly common.
11、What can be the best title for the text?
A.How our early childhood memories form
B. How childhood amnesia influences our lives
C.Why some memories disappear and others don't
D. Why we can't remember our early childhood
If you thought that only the likes of Elon Musk and Jeff Bezos were racing to reach Mars, this one will surprise you—ketchup(番茄酱)and dressing(加调味酱的) maker Heinz partnered with the Florida Institute of Technology to grow tomatoes in Mars-like soil and then made ketchup. It's called the Marz Edition.
Nutrition on a distant planet is definitely going to be a tough task. While astronauts carry dehydrated(脱水的) food packets with them, if we are looking to establish settlements on different planets in our solar system, we will need more than food packets; we will need to make food self-reliant.
Astrobiologist Andrew Palmer is one such scientist looking for means to solve this problem. Palmer and his team have created Mars-like conditions in a greenhouse. They sourced soil from the Mojave Desert that is similar to that found on Mars and also created light, temperature, and water conditions, similar to the red planet.
They teamed up with Heinz for its expertise in tomatoes and found four plant varieties that could potentially grow in these tough conditions. After a small 30-plant study, the team found that only two varieties actually did and then expanded their experiment to 450 plants grown in individual pots. The project took more than 2,000 hours and finally they were able to produce a crop that could be harvested.
The result was hundreds of tomatoes up to the standards that Heinz uses for the production of its signature ketchup. The company did exactly that and packaged it into a special edition bottle. Before you ask, the ketchup is not for sale.
Palmer believes the technique is far from perfect because the yield(产量) was much less than what they had anticipated. This indicates that Martian tomato farming could be improved by growing the plants in troughs(槽) instead of pots introducing a wider variety of micro-organisms, and adding various plants to reduce the spread of diseases. The experiment also provided insights into how it would be possible to grow plants in the toughest environments on Earth.
12、What does "this problem" in paragraph 3 refer to?
A. Growing crops on Mars. B. Bringing ketchup to Mars.
C. Creating Mars-like conditions. D. Establishing settlements on Mars.
13、What does the underlined part "expertise" mean in paragraph 4?
A. A strong sense of customer-oriented service.
B. The wide knowledge or special skill in particular field.
C. The generous financial support.
D.The commitment coupled with creativity.
14、What can be learned about the Marz Edition?
A. It is available for purchase. B. It enjoys a high yield.
C. It has a strange taste. D. It is of good quality.
15、What might Palmer's team do next?
A. Improve their experiment with a trough system.
B. Grow tomatoes in the toughest environments on Earth.
C. Explore the variety of micro-organisms affecting crop yields.
D. Find ways to stop diseases spreading among their experimental plants.

Price of a Miracle
Only a very costly operation could save him now and it was looking like there was no one to lend them the money. She heard Dad say to her tearful mom with desperation, "Only a miracle can save him now."
Tess went to her bedroom and poured all the change she had saved out on the floor and counted it carefully: 47 cents. She slipped out of home and made her way to Rexall's Drug Store. She waited patiently for the pharmacist (药剂师) to give her some attention but he was too busy at this moment. Finally, she took a quarter from her pocket and banged it on the glass counter. That did it! "And what do you want?" the pharmacist asked in an annoyed tone of voice. "I'm talking to my brother from Chicago Medical University whom I haven't seen in ages," he said without waiting for a reply to his question.
"Well, I want to talk to you about my brother." Tess answered back in the same annoyed tone. "He's really, really sick and I want to buy a miracle."
"We don't sell miracles here, little girl. I'm sorry but I can't help you," the pharmacist said, softening a little. "Listen, I have the money to pay for it. If it isn't enough, I will get the rest. Just tell me how much it costs." Tess answered with a blind faith.
The pharmacist's brother was a well-dressed man. He stooped down and asked the little girl, "What kind of a miracle does your brother need?" "I don't know," Tess replied with her eyes welling up.
"I just know he's really sick and Mom says he needs an operation. But my dad can't pay for it, so I want to use my money."
注意:1.续写词数应为150左右;

"How much do you have?" asked the man from Chicago. "47 cents!" Tess replied without any hesitation. To her surprise, the man said that he was a doctor and that it was a fair price for a miracle. Overcome with excitement, Tess grasped his hand, leading him to her home. With doubt and hope, Dad and Mom had Andrew checked by the man, who declared that he would perform an operation on the boy and promised it wouldn't be long before he could pick himself up. Hearing his words, the whole family burst into tears of joy.
The operation was completed. Hardly had Andrew been sent back home when his parents went to thank the doctor with Tess, for they knew that 47 cents was a joke for an operation. They promised to save enough money to pay for the bill only to be told that Tess had paid for it. "It's a fair deal," the doctor explained to the parents, and then looked into Tess's eyes, smiling, "47 cents was what it cost—plus the faith of a little girl."
