The ducklings hurried toward the lake. The mother duck began to walk back and forth, dragging(拖拽)one of her wings along the ground. When the fox saw her, he was quite pleased. He said to himself, “It looks like she’s hurt and can’t fly! I can easily catch and eat her! ” He ran toward her.
The mother duck led the fox away from the lake. The fox followed her. Now he wouldn’t be able to harm her ducklings. The mother duck looked at her ducklings and saw that they had reached the lake. She was relieved(放心的). She stopped and took a deep breath.
The fox thought she was tired and he came closer. But the mother duck quickly spread her wings and flew into the air. She landed in the middle of the lake and her ducklings swam to her.

(2021·江苏苏州·苏州市立达中学校校考二模)The other day, my sister and I were sitting in the restaurant, trying to have a conversation, but her children, four-year-old Willow and seven-year-old Luca, would not stop fighting. The arguments—over a fork, or who had more water in a glass—never stopped.
Then my sister reached into her handbag, produced two shiny iPads, and handed one to each child. Suddenly, the two were quiet. They sat playing games and watching videos, and we continued with our conversation.
After our meal, as my sister stuffed the iPads back into her bag, she said, “I don’t want to give them the iPads at the dinner table, but if they keep them occupied for an hour so we can eat in peace, I often just hand them over. I am afraid that it’s bad for them. I do worry that it makes them think it’s OK to use electronics at the dinner table in the future. ”
Dr. Gary Small, director of the Longevity Center at the University of California, Los Angeles says that the brain is highly sensitive to stimuli (刺激物), like iPads and smartphone screen, and if people spend too much time on one technology, and less time interacting (互动)with people like parents at the dinner table, that could prevent the development of certain communication skills.
“Conversations with each other are the way children learn to have conversations with themselves, and learn how to be alone,” said Sherry Turkle, a professor of science, technology and society at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. She fears that children who do not learn real interactions, which often have imperfections, will come to know a world where perfect, shiny screens give them a false sense of intimacy (亲密)without risk. However, they need to be able to gather themselves and know who they are. So someday they can form a relationship with another person without a panic(恐慌)of being alone. “If you don’t teach your children to be alone, they will only know how to be lonely,” she said.
7.What did Willow and Luca fight about?
    A.Little things. B.iPads. C.Delicious food. D.Interesting things.
8.According to Dr. Small, what should parents do?
A.Provide their children with various technologies. B.Teach their children communication skills.
C.Limit their children’s screen time. D.Talk to their children at the dinner table.
    9.What is Sherry Turkle worried?
A.Children are afraid of taking risks. B.Children try to escape from the real world.
C.Children can’t deal with situations with few friends. D.Children can’t live without electronic devices.

(2021·江苏苏州·苏州市立达中学校校考二模)Walter Dean Myers, born on August 12, 1937, was an American writer of children’s books, best known for young adult literature. He wrote more than 100 books, including picture books and non-fiction. “I care about writing for young people because I remember how much I needed help and guidance at that time in my life,” Myers said in his book Just Write: Here’s How!
Myers loved writing. He got up at five o’clock every morning. He worked at home in a small office that used to be his son’s bedroom.
Myers would first write an outline for every book. He called this prewriting. He imagined what the story would be, and wrote down ideas in a notebook. To make sure there’s enough action and dialogue for a good story, he thought of 30 scenes. He wrote a short description of each scene in his notebook.
He also cut out pictures of real people and put them on his office walls. He looked at those pictures and came up with ideas. Once he knew what the story would be and who the characters were, he began to write the book. He wrote five pages a day on his computer.
Myers usually worked on three books at a time. When he was not prewriting or writing a book, he might be rewriting something he had already completed. Then he would send the story to his agent. He or she made suggestions for the story. After these final changes were made, the book was published and made its way to bookstores and libraries. By that time, Myers would be hard at work on his next book.

(2022·江苏苏州·常熟市第一中学校考二模)It seems food deliverymen (送货员) are always in a hurry. They wear blue, red or yellow helmets and many of them don’t follow traffic rules. They drive on the wrong side of the road and run red lights. They use mobile phones while driving. These reckless (鲁莽的) behaviors have caught the public’s attention.
In the first half of 2017, food deliverymen had 76 traffic accidents in Shanghai, according to Shanghai Public Security Bureau. That means every two and a half days, a food deliveryman will die or get hurt on the road.
What makes deliverymen take such risks? The strict rules of the food delivery service companies and the anxious (焦急的) customers may be the answer.
Many companies will fine a deliveryman up to 2,000 yuan, if he fails to deliver an order on time, reported China Daily. Fines also go to those who get bad reviews from customers.
To solve the problem, food delivery service companies need to improve their incentive systems (激励制度), noted CRI Online.
Some cities are also taking action. Shanghai has asked companies to train their deliverymen on traffic rules and safety. Now in Shenzhen, if a deliveryman gets caught breaking traffic rules more than twice, then he will be banned from driving food service delivery vehicles (交通工具) for a whole year .
16.How many traffic accidents did food deliverymen in Shanghai cause in the first half of 2017?
    A.76. B.38. C.152. D.2, 000.
17.Which of the following statements is TRUE according to the passage?
A.It’s a pity that all food deliverymen don’t follow traffic rules.

C.It matters a lot to a deliveryman if he gets bad reviews from customers.
D.The deliveryman isn’t allowed to send food for a whole year if he breaks traffic rules more than twice.
18.What is the main idea of the last paragraph?
A.Companies are improving their review systems.
B.Some cities are working to improve the situation.
C.To drive safely, food deliverymen will obey more traffic rules.
D.Food deliverymen cannot drive on important roads in the future.

(2022·江苏苏州·常熟市第一中学校考二模)On January 27, in order to win the new pneumonia Resistance War(抗击新型肺炎战), the Ministry of Education issued(公布) a notice on putting off the start time of school in spring 2020. It was said that school should not start before February 17. The exact start time of school will depend on situations and further notices.
However, many parents are very worried that putting off the start of school may affect children’s studies. If they have such a long winter vacation, children will not learn any knowledge, read books or study at all. They may forget what they have learned before. Staying at home for a long time will make them keep eating, sleeping and playing, which seriously affect their physical and mental health.
In short, the close of school influences learning and develops bad habits, so how should we avoid these problems? Local education departments have also given a notice, that is, to organize online teaching and create a network platform(平台), where necessary courses will be shown every day, and online teaching will be given by excellent teachers of the subject, and students can learn at home through computer or mobile network. It should be said that such a method is very good. It can not only keep students indoors and not worry about the infection(感染) of the disease, but also make them study at home, improve their learning ability, and truly achieve “no suspension of classes”. Both the platform itself and the recorded lesson resources are more useful, and are welcomed by parents and teachers.
Of course, except for learning at home, it is also necessary to teach children about health knowledge, especially how to keep away from touching virus and other knowledge popularization; at the same time, it is also necessary for children to do some physical exercises or some games, which is good for physical health at home.
19.Except for learning at home, what is also necessary according to the writer?
A.To keep playing online games. B.To keep touching different people.
C.To do some physical exercises outside. D.To teach children about health knowledge.
20.The underlined word “suspension” in Paragraph 3 probably means ________.
    A.plan B.stop C.growth D.change
21.What’s the best title for this passage?
A.A Special Way to Learn at Home B.A New War with a New Chance
C.A Way to Keep Mentally Healthy D.A Method to Make Parents Worried

(2022·江苏苏州·常熟市第一中学校考二模)Sometimes our body does things we don't ask it to do. Sneezing(打喷嚏),coughing, blinking(眨眼睛)and even yawning(打哈欠)are examples of involuntary movements or reflex actions(反射动作). What makes our body do these things?
These involuntary actions are a response(反应)to a stimulus(刺激). When we do these things, our body is trying to protect itself. If an irritant(刺激物)such as pollen(花粉)from plants gets into our nose or nasal passages(鼻腔通道),our body sneezes to get it out. If we breathe in dust, our body coughs to remove it from our lungs(肺)or windpipe. We blink in order to keep our eyes clean and moist(湿润)and to prevent dust and other things from staying on them. A yawn is our body's way of making us put more oxygen into our bloodstream.
. These involuntary movements happen because our brain is giving out signals. There is a system of nerves(神经)called the central nervous system, that covers our entire body: from the brain, down the spinal cord(脊髓)inside our spinal column (the bones that do down our back,to the tips of our fingers and toes. When our body parts sense certain things, like a mosquito蚊子)bite, a message is sent to our brain. Then the brain sends a message back to itch(发痒).
Without these reflex actions, we would not live very long.
22.What is the passage mainly about?
A.We would not live long without movements. B.Why our body does involuntary movements.
C.We sneeze to get out an irritant such as pollen. D.How our brain is giving out signals to our nerves.
23.If dust comes into our eyes, we will________ to protect our body.
    A.cough B.sneeze C.blink D.yawn
24.Which of the following sentences can be put at the beginning of Paragraph 3?
A.What tells our body to take care of us the way it does?
B.Don't you think it is interesting for our body to do so?
C.What can we do when involuntary movements happen?
D.How can we avoid stimulus to protect our own body?

(2021·江苏苏州·苏州市平江中学校校考二模)“Quickly, Dorothy,” she shouted. “Go to the cellar(地窖). ”
Aunt Em ran to the door of the cellar and opened it. Dorothy picked up Toto and ran to the cellar door. Before she could climb down the ladder into the cellar, a great wind picked up the house. It turned it round and round and round and then carried it high into the sky.
It was not very dark. Dorothy felt as if she were riding through the sky. She held on to Toto and climbed under her bed, where she stayed for several hours. Then, although the house was still moving, she fell asleep.
When she woke up—he did not know how much later—the house was on the ground. It was in a field full of flowers, and there were hundreds of beautifully colored birds flying about and singing. Not far away, there was a stream with clear, fresh water.
Dorothy was still under her bed. She got up and left the house. She was surprised to see three little men and a little woman walking toward her. They were very strangely dressed. The men’s clothes were white and had little stars all over them.

“I’m afraid you are making a mistake,” Dorothy said. “I didn’t kill any witch.” “Your house did,” one of the little men said. “Look! ”
He pointed to the house. Dorothy saw two feet sticking out from under it. “Oh!” Dorothy shouted. “The house fell on her. What can I do? ”
“There is nothing to do,” the little woman said. “The Wicked Witch of the East is dead, and the Munchkins are thankful to you. ”

(2021·江苏苏州·苏州市平江中学校校考二模)We interviewed singer Maisie Peters after she gave a private show at Atlantic Records in Manhattan, New York. We had a lot of fun chatting with her-we even got-to sing with her!
Q: At what age did you start singing and playing the guitar, and do you play other instruments?
A: I think I started singing probably when I was 8 in a singing club. When I started playing the guitar, I was 12 or 13 years old. Actually, I played the guitar at first. T played it during my whole elementary school period, but I was so bad. My twin sister at that time played the clarinet. We were both equally awful. So my poor parents had to listen to terrible noises. Then I gave that up.
Q: How do you remember the words to your songs?
A: I sing them a lot. I guess when you do anything a lot, it’s just easier to remember. You just have to practice all the time. Before I go on stage, I sing all the words under my breath. I still forget words sometimes, which is embarrassing. But you get over it and it’s fine.
Q: What advice would you give to someone who wants to be a singer?
A: If you’re going to be a singer, put yourself out there as much as you can. It’s pretty easy to do that nowadays with social media and YouTube. And that’s how I got started. And when you’re my age.you feel like you’ve got the best stuff to present. You can start a career on your own Nowadays. You don’t need anyone to help you with that. So just put yourself out there.
30.What instrument does Maisie Peters play?
    A.Guitar. B.Flute. C.Clarinet. D.Piano.
31.According to Peters, singing songs under her breath ________.
A.can help her remember the words to her songs every time B.helps her feel less embarrassed when she makes mistakes
C.helps her prepare herself before going on stage D.successfully makes her get over all difficulties
32.Which of the following is a suggestion from Peters?
A.It is important to find someone to help you start your career. B.You can start your career online on your own.
C.Young people should start to work as early as possible. D.It is easy to become famous.

(2021·江苏苏州·苏州市平江中学校校考二模)Not long ago, Egypt marked the 150th anniversary of the opening of the Suez Canal (苏伊士运河). The canal connects the Mediterranean Sea to the Red Sea and the Indian Ocean. It helped speed world trade between the East and the West. But the man-made waterway has also helped speed the rise of other things, such as invasive(入侵的) non-native species. Scientists say the invasive creatures have damaged the Mediterranean’s environment and caused native species to disappear.
The number of non-native creatures has risen since the Suez Canal was widened in 2015. The “New Suez Canal” brought disagreement from many Mediterranean countries. Belle Galil is an Israeli biologist who has studied the Mediterranean for over 30 years. She says much of the ecological damage cannot be repaired. She said action is needed to reduce the influence of the invasive fish and other sea life.
Galil works at Tel Aviv University’s Steinhardt Museum of Natural History. She noted that the widening and deepening of the Suez Canal has created a “moving aquarium” of species. These creatures could make coastal waters almost unusable for human beings. Galil believes the number of invasive species has reached 400. That is twice the number 30 years ago. She said this is a “historic example of the dangers of unintended consequences”.
Israel is now dealing with huge numbers of poisonous jellyfish that affect coastal power centers and keep people from visiting the seashore. Other poisonous species, such as the lionfish and silver-cheeked toadfish, are also appearing.
Galil said the problems of invasive species can be compared to those of climate change, pollution and over-fishing. She insists that the new species have caused a major “restructuring” of the ecological environment. This has endangered native species.
Some experts have suggested that increasing salt levels in the canal itself could create a barrier (障碍物) that would keep invasive species out.
33.What lesson can we learn from the influences of the Suez Canal?
A.Seeing is believing. B.Every coin has two sides. C.Let nature take its course. D.Everyone makes mistakes.
34.What’s the attitude of many Mediterranean countries towards the “New Suez Canal”?
    A.Uncaring. B.Unclear. C.Supportive. D.Against.
35.What is the ecological environment like after the “restructuring”?
A.It is from bad to worse. B.It remains the same. C.It improves a great deal. D.It has become a completely new one.
36.Why did Galil mention climate change, pollution and over-fishing in paragraph 5?
A.To add some background information. B.To stress the harm of invasive species.
C.To solve the problem of invasive species. D.To compare their similarities and differences.

(2021·江苏苏州·苏州高新区第二中学校考二模)Many expressions that we use in American English come from novels. Today we will look at some of them from Lewis Carroll’s famous novel “Alice in Wonderland” in detail.
The story is about a young girl falling down a rabbit hole. When she finally lands, she finds herself in a strange world and meets some strange characters.
The first character Alice meets is the White Rabbit, who runs past her and says some strange words. Alice chases him, and that is where her adventures begin.
In English, chasing a white rabbit means chasing an impossible clue and finding yourself in a misleading situation.
Then, as she runs after the rabbit, she falls down the rabbit hole into Wonderland.
To fall down the rabbit hole can mean to enter a confusing situation. However, usually we use this expression to mean we get interested in something to the point of distraction(分神). It often happens by accident and is about something not that meaningful.
Later in the story, Alice meets the March Hare and the Hatter at a crazy tea party. Hares have long been thought to behave excitedly in March, which is their mating(交配) season. (2021·江苏苏州·苏州高新区第二中学校考二模)Many people take running as a way to keep fit. They like to run in hot weather and enjoy the feeling of being wet through with sweat while running. Cold weather during winter months, with low temperatures and freezing cold winds, may keep many people from running in the open air.
However, a new study shows that the drop in temperature is a good reason to run. In fact, running in cold weather helps improve one’s performance. Many runners might find it easier to run in winter than in hot weather.
Lower temperatures reduce stress on the body. When you run in cold weather, your heart rate is lower. And the body needs less water on a cold day than in warm weather because dehydration levels are lower in winter than in warmer conditions.
John Brewer is a professor of applied sports science at ST. Mary’s University in London. For this study, he and other researchers put a group of people into a room where summer and winter weather conditions are recreated. The test subjects, were asked to run 10,000 meters under both conditions and their biological measurements were recorded and studied.
From the study, every movement runners make produces heat. The heat can be really damaging unless the body can lose it. One way in which people lose heat is by sweating. The body loses heat through droplets of sweet. The body also loses it by transporting the blood to the surface of the skin and it puts more stress on the heart, particularly in hot conditions because it’s much harder to lose heat when the outside environment is warm. As the result shows running in hot temperatures results in 6 percent higher heart rates.
When running in cold conditions, the body does not have to work hard to pump blood to the skin surface. Therefore, it requires less energy. The most important thing for people who run in cold conditions is to wear the right clothing. Keep as dry as possible when exercising in low temperatures. Wear mittens on your hands instead of gloves. Wear more than one layer of clothing to keep sweat away from your skin. So don’t let winter weather keep you indoors. Simply get ready for the low temperatures and start running.
46.What does the underline word "dehydration" in Paragraph 3 means the loss of ________ from the body.

D.It was easier to record their biological measurements.

C.To encourage people to run outdoors in winter.
D.To compare the advantages of running in winter and in summer.

(2021·江苏苏州·苏州高新区实验初级中学校考二模)Can any travel be greener than traveling by bike? We hear a lot about various methods of “green” travel, but we don’t hear much about traveling in a way to nearly clear our carbon footprint altogether.
Traveling by bicycle is one of the few methods of travel that allow a deep relationship with Mother Nature. Bicycles use no fuel, and are easy on the ground we pass over, but the best part of traveling by bicycle is the chance to get to know the earth and her people in a much better manner than any other vehicle can allow. My family and I traveled southward from Alaska. We went over the mountain, sailed through valleys, and woke up finding snow covering our tent. We rode through deserts and rain forests. Children climbed trees and tasted fruits they had never heard of.
We had the chance to get to know people. There is something about a bike that draws people closer and encourages them to show their kindness. It might be something simple like handing us a bag of apples or tomatoes, or it might be as complex as hiding drinks along the highway, but all added magic to our lives. I can tell many stories about the people we’ve met. About the woman in Oregon who handed us the keys to her house and said, “Go to my house and make yourselves at home. I’ll be here in a few hours.” She didn’t even know our names, but showed her support and encouragement to us. Or the man who cycled up to where we were eating cheese and cookies in a park and invited us to his home for a warm dinner and a soft bed for the night.
One day in Mexico we ended up in a migrant workers’ camp, and our boys played with some of the poorest kids in the country. Another day, we were invited to stay with a very rich family. Young couples and old. Rich and poor White, black, and brown. All made our travel experience wonderful.
I’m convinced traveling by bike is the best way to see the world. It allows us to gain a much deeper respect for Mother Nature and local people that we could not gain in any other manner.
52.What’s the author’s purpose of writing this article?
A.To encourage readers to travel with their families. B.To call for a much deeper respect for Mother Nature.
C.To introduce a green traveling method. D.To call on readers to travel only by bike.
53.Why did the woman give the author’s family the keys to her house?
A.She wanted them to wait for her there. B.She was one of the author’s friends.
C.She wanted to support and encourage them. D.She was also fond of cycling.
54.What does the underlined word “all” in Paragraph 4 refer to?
A.Different kinds of people. B.All migrant workers. C.A wealthy family. D.Poor kids.

(2021·江苏苏州·苏州高新区实验初级中学校考二模)Garrison had been treasuring his last piece. All he had left now was a sheet of the beautiful brown paper Pa had brought back from his last sailing trip.
"You’ve been quiet, " Pa said, "Could I see your picture? "
Garrison handed over his sketch. Pa studied it, then looked at his son. "You’re ten now, eh? " Garrison nodded, hoping Pa wouldn’t say that he was too old to be fooling around with pencils and paper.
"When I was ten, I wanted to work on my father’s ship, " Pa said, "When Thomas was ten, he asked me to let him plant the corn. "
Garrison’s throat (嗓子) tightened. "I know I’m not like either of you. " Pa looked at the drawing again.
"No, you are like both of us. You work hard, like Thomas. And you’re like me, too. I have wandering feet, but you have a wandering mind. We need to see things differently.
Garrison frowned. "I’d rather love the land, like Thomas, or the sea…"
Pa patted his hand. "Thomas cares about our family very much-that’s why he’s worked so hard to bring us food. And my love for the sea makes good money. But there’s more in life than food and money. There’s happiness, for one. Does it make you happy to draw? "
    Garrison nodded.
"And it makes me happy to look at your drawings. Not many folks can catch happiness on a piece of paper. Some might say drawing’s a waste of time, but they don’t understand how things are. Why, asking you to stop drawing like asking Thomas to stop farming, or me to stop going to sea. It would be like asking us to stop breathing, wouldn’t it? "
Garrison considered this, then replied, "No, sir. Not quite like breathing. If I couldn’t draw any more, it would be… like someone took away my voice. " He hung his head. In his mind he could hear Thomas laughing, "It’s not like you ever speak up, anyway. "
But Pa patted his shoulder and said, "That would be a pure shame. Your voice is important, Garrison, whether it’s out loud or on paper. And speaking of paper…" Pa smiled. "Take a look in my bag. "
Garrison reached into the bag and found a sketchbook. For a moment he was speechless happiness seemed to fill his body and stick in his throat. Then he managed to find his voice. "Oh, Pa-thank you. "
    55.Why did Garrison’s throat tighten?
    A.Because he felt thirsty.
    B.Because he felt very scared.
C.Because he knew he was not like Pa or Thomas.
D.Because he thought Pa would stop him drawing.
56.When Garrison frowned, he most probably felt _________________.
    A.unhappy B.worried C.afraid D.ashamed
57.What can we infer from the passage about Garrison?
A.He lived in a big wealthy family. B.He was his father’s favourite son.
C.He would go on with his drawing. D.He would learn to work on the farm.

(2021·江苏苏州·苏州高新区实验初级中学校考二模)I always felt sorry for the people in wheelchairs. Some people, old and weak, cannot get around by themselves. Others seem perfectly healthy, dressed in business suits. But whenever I saw someone in a wheelchair, I only saw a disability, not a person.
When I fainted(昏倒) at Euro Disney due to low blood pressure. This was the first time I had ever fainted, and my parents said that I must rest for a while after First Aid. I agreed to take it easy but, as I stepped towards the door, I saw my dad pushing a wheelchair in my direction! Feeling the color burn my cheeks, I asked him to wheel that thing right back to where he found it.
I could not believe this was happening to me. Wheelchairs were fine for other people but not for me, as my father wheeled me out into the main street, people immediately began to treat me differently.
Little kids ran in front of me, forcing my father to stop the wheelchair suddenly. Bitterness set in as I was thrown back and forth. “Stupid kids—they have perfectly good legs. Why can’t they watch where they are going?” I thought. People stared down at me, with pity in their eyes. Then they would look away, maybe because they thought the sooner they forgot me, the better.
“I am just like you!” I wanted to scream. “The only difference is you’ve got legs, and I have wheels.”
People in wheelchairs are not stupid. They see every look and hear each word. Looking out at the faces, I finally understood: I was once just like them. I treated people in wheelchairs exactly the way they did not want to be treated. I realized it is some of us with two healthy legs who are truly disabled.
58.The author once ________ when she was healthy.
A.helped disabled people B.imagined herself sitting in a wheelchair
C.looked down upon disabled people D.saw some healthy people moving around in wheelchairs
59.The experience of the author tells us that ________.
A.life is the best teacher B.people often eat their bitter fruit
C.life is so changeable that nobody can foretell D.we should treat others in the way we want to be treated
60.Which is the best title for the passage?
A.How to Get Used to Wheelchairs B.The Wheels Are as Good as Two Legs
C.People with Two Legs Are Truly Healthy D.The Difference between Healthy People and the Disabled
