(2022·江苏无锡·统考二模)Wordle: The Game that Quickly Became an Internet Hit
You might have heard of the word game Wordle. Maybe you have even tried the game yourself. The online puzzle has become so popular that some people cannot go a day without it. Many players share their game results on social media.
Wordle is a very simple game. That may be why its popularity spread so quickly and widely. Compared to many other computer games, the design is also very simple. It contains just 30 empty squares appearing under the name “WORDLE.”
Players get six chances to guess a five-letter word that has been chosen by the game for that day. The goal is to guess the word in the least number of tries.
To start, players enter a real word. Then, the letters turn different colors to provide the player clues about the word. A green letter means the letter is in the word and is in the right position. Yellow means the letter appears in the word but is in the wrong place. A gray letter means it does not appear in the word at all.
The game is web-based, not an app. So, users do not need to download it. It is also free to play. Users can play the game once per day.
Wordle was created by Josh Wardle, a New York software engineer. He said he first made it for his partner, who likes playing word games like crossword puzzles. But he decided in October to release it publicly. The game immediately took off.
As Wordle has grown, so has the number of experts offering advice for the best ways to play the game. One language expert, David Sidhu, recently gave his opinion on the best words to start a game with. He lists the most common letters from English words. The top letters he provides are a, r, o, i, and s. Sidhu also came up with a suggestion for the best starting word for Wordle. That word is “soare,” which means a young hawk. It is a British English word that was used commonly in the 1700s, the Collins English Dictionary reports.
4.When you turn on the game, which of the following pictures will appear on your screen?
A. B. C. D.
5.The game becomes so popular because _________.
A.people can’t go a day without playing it
B.it is simply designed and very easy to play
C.players can share their results on social media
D.many people offer advice on how to play the game
6.If you want to play the game, you have to _________.
A.know millions of words B.download it from the Internet first
C.start with a real word D.choose the right color for the letters
(2022·江苏无锡·统考二模)I began working in journalism(新闻工作) when I was eight. It was my mother’s idea. She wanted me to “make something” of myself, and decided I had better start young if I was to have any chance of keeping up with the competition.
With my load of magazines, I went to Belleville Avenue. The crowds were there. There were two gas stations on the corner of Belleville and Union. For several hours I made myself highly visible(可见的), making sure everyone could see me and the heavy black letters on the bag that said THE SATURDAY EVENING POST. When it was supper time, I walked back home.
“How many did you sell, my boy?” my mother asked.
“None.”
“Where did you go?”
“The corner of Belleville and Union Avenues.”
“What did you do?”
“Stood on the corner waiting for somebody to buy a Saturday Evening Post.”
“You just stood there?”
“Didn’t sell a single one.”
“My God, Russell!”
Uncle Allen put in, “Well, I’ve decided to take the Post.” I handed him a copy and he paid me a nickle(五分镍币). It was the first nickle I made.
Afterwards my mother taught me how to be a salesman. I would have to ring doorbells, talk to people with self-confidence, and persuade(劝说) them by saying that no one, no matter how poor, could afford to be without the Saturday Evening Post in the home.
One day, I told my mother I’d changed my mind. I didn’t want to make a success in the magazine business.
“If you think you can change your mind like this,” she replied, “you’ll become a good-for-nothing.” She insisted that, as soon as school was over, I should start ringing doorbells, selling magazines. Whenever I said no, she would scold me.
My mother and I had fought this battle almost as long as I could remember. My mother, dissatisfied with my father’s common workman’s life, made up her mind that I would not grow up like him and his people. But never did she expect that, forty years later, such a successful journalist as me would go back to her husband’s people for true life and love.

C.The First Nickle I Made D.My Early Success of A Journalist
(2022·江苏无锡·统考二模)The end of the year is drawing near, and winter is in full activity. The season brings along with its strong winds and snow — an environment that’s never comfortable to be in.
This unpleasant and even frightening part of winter can be often seen in literature. In Shakespeare’s King Lear (1606), the king has given away his kingdom and been driven out by his two ungrateful daughters. He is out in the winter cold, suffering (遭受痛苦) things that are usually saved for the poorest and most unlucky human beings.
The winter is bad enough for Lear, but being driven out by his family is worse. A song from another Shakespeare’s play, As You Like It (1599), is fitting for this poor old man’s situation: “Blow, blow, thou winter wind/Thou art not so unkind/As man’s ingratitude (忘恩负义)”. Here, winter is used to bring out the ugliness of inhumanity (无人性). There aren’t many things that are worse than winter, according to Shakespeare.
Once winter became less of a danger to human beings, it became more positive in literary works. Since Charles Dickens, the representation of the season in literature often has something to do with happy Christmas celebrations.
The cold of the winter weather provides a contrast (对比) to the fun going on indoors.
Dickens’ A Christmas Carol (1843) was the start of this, but Christmas is still a common, cheery element (元素) in stories that feature winter scenes today. Consider the joy felt by Harry Potter and his friends in J. K. Rowling’s Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone (1997) as they sit down for their festive meal:
“Harry had never in all his life had such a Christmas dinner. A hundred fat, roast turkeys; mountains of roast and boiled potatoes; platters of chipolatas; tureens of buttered peas, silver boats of thick, rich gravy and cranberry sauce.”
It is almost as much a pleasure to read about the meal as it might have been to eat it.
Although winter still isn’t the most cheerful season in novels and poems, it’s safe to say that writers have surely “warmed up” since Shakespeare’s days.
10.What can we learn from Shakespeare’s works?
A.Winter is compared with the ugly side of humanity.
B.Shakespeare didn’t like winter for its bad weather.
C.It’s in winter when King Lear drove his two daughters off.
D.King Lear was forced to give away his kingdom in a cold winter.

A.a lot of his works are related to winter
B.he started a new way of representing winter
C.he is the most popular author of winter stories
D.his works make people feel cheerful in winter
12.The example of Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone is used mainly to show _________.
A.Christmas is still a symbol of joy in modern stories
B.traditional Christmas food makes the winter cheery
C.it’s a pleasure to read Christmas-related books in winter
D.winter has become the happiest season in literary works
13.The author’s main purpose in writing this article is to _________.
A.recommend some winter stories in literature
B.explain what winter is like in literary works
C.describe certain customs that are related to winter
D.tell us why winter is described as unpleasant in literature
(2022·江苏无锡·江苏省锡山高级中学实验学校校考二模)It’s believed that people reach their mental peak (顶峰) in their 20s. However, this isn’t completely true. According to a recent study by scientists from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in the US, people are best at doing different things at different ages. They studied many people aged 10 to 90 years old, who were asked to take part in different memory tests.
14.This passage is probably a(n) ________.
A.novel B.notice C.advertisement D.report
15.At what age can people reach the peak of their attention?
A.18. B.32. C.43. D.50.
16.Which fact does the passage provide?
A.The younger people are, the better memory they have.
B.The study is based on some research on people of all ages.
C.People in their 40s can understand others’ feelings best.
D.Different people are good at different things at the same age.
(2022·江苏无锡·江苏省锡山高级中学实验学校校考二模)In fairy tales, it’s usually the princess that needs protecting. At Google in Silicon Valley, the princess is the one defending the castle. Parisa Tabriz is a 31-year-old with perhaps the most unique job title in engineering — “Google Security Princess”. Her job is to hack into the most popular web browser (浏览器) on the Earth, trying to find weaknesses in the system before the “black hats” do. To defeat Google’s attackers, Tabriz must first think like them.
Tabriz’s role has changed a lot in the eight years since she first started working at Google. Back then, the young graduate from Illinois University was one of 50 security engineers — today there are over 500.
Internet Crime has come a long way in the past decade — from the Nigerian Prince Scam to credit card theft. Tabriz’s biggest concern now is the people who find bugs in Google’s software, and sell the information to governments or criminals. To fight against this, the company has set up a “Vulnerability Rewards Programme”, paying anywhere from $100 to $ 20,000 for reported mistakes.
It’s a world away from Tabriz’s computer-free childhood home in Chicago. The daughter of an Iranian-American doctor father, and Polish-American nurse mother, Tabriz had little contact with computers until she started studying engineering at college. Take a close look at a line-up of Google security staff today, and you’ll find women like Tabriz are few and far between — though in the last few years she has hired more female tech geniuses. Tabriz agrees there’s an obvious gender (性别) disequilibrium in Silicon Valley.
Funnily enough, during training sessions, Tabriz first asks new colleagues to hack into not a computer, but a vending machine (自动售货机). Tabriz’s job is as much about technological know-how as understanding the psychology (心理) of attackers.
17.What can we know about Tabriz?
A.She uses both technology and psychology while working.
B.She was the first female engineer at Google.
C.She learnt much computer knowledge in her childhood.
D.She must think differently from attackers to defeat them.
18.Which is the best title for the passage?
A.Causes of Internet Crime.
B.A Security Engineer’s Daily Life.
C.Google’s New Job.
D.Tabriz, the “Security Princess” at Google.
19.Which of the following has the closest meaning to the underlined word “disequilibrium” in the last but one paragraph?
A.advantage B.imbalance C.difference D.competition
(2022·江苏无锡·江苏省锡山高级中学实验学校校考二模)Bertie was sad for weeks, months after the lion died. There was nothing I could do to cheer him or even console him. He would sit for hours in his room, or go off on long walks all on his own. He seemed so shut away inside himself. Try as I did, I could not reach him.
Then one day I was in the kitchen here, when I saw him hurrying down the hill, waving his stick and shouting to me. “I’ve got it,” he cried, as he came in, “I’ve got it at last.” He showed me the end of his stick. It was white. “See that, Millie?” “Chalk! It’s chalk underground, isn’t it?”
“So?” I said.
“You know the famous White Horse on the hillside at Uffington, the one they carved (雕刻) out of the chalk a thousand years ago? That horse never died, did it? It’s still alive, isn’t it? Well, that’s what we’re going to do, so he will never be forgotten. We’ll carve the White Prince out on the hillside — he’ll be there forever, and he’ll be white forever too. ”
“It’ll take a bit of time, won’t it?” I said.
“We’ve got plenty, haven’t we?” he replied, with the same smile he had smiled at me when he was a ten-year-old boy asking me if he could come back and mend my kite for me.
Every spare hour we had, we were up there scraping (刨土) away with spades (铲子), and we had buckets (桶) to carry away the earth. It was hard, back-breaking work, but it was a labour of love. We did it, Bertie and I, we did it together — paws, claws, tail, mane, until he was complete and perfect in every detail.
It was just after we’d finished that the butterflies first came. We noticed that when the sun comes out after the rain in the summer, the butterflies — Adonis Blues, they are, I looked them up — come out to drink on the chalk face. Then the White Prince becomes a butterfly lion, and breathes again like a living creature.
So now you know how Bertie’s white lion became the White Prince and how the White Prince became our butterfly lion.
(Adapted from The Butterfly Lion)

(2022·江苏无锡·江苏省锡山高级中学实验学校校考二模)Phil Wise’s heart raced as he opened one of the transport tubes. He and a team of scientists stepped back as a young Tasmanian devil (袋獾) named Oddity came out. Oddity took a cautious look around and then ran into the forest on Maria Island.
Wise is a wildlife scientist from the Save the Tasmanian Devil Program. The scientists working with this program study Tasmanian devils, monitor their health, and track the devils found in the wild. Oddity and 14 others were raised in a reserve and then brought to Maria Island to be released (释放) into the wild. Though they are raised in zoos all over the world, devils live wild only in Tasmania. They are important to the ecosystem because they eat dead animals they find, which helps clean up the environment. Devils also eat animals such as wallabies, wombats, and possums, helping to keep those populations balanced.
But a cancer called Devil Facial Tumor Disease (DFTD) is killing devils on mainland Tasmania, endangering the species (物种). The goal of the scientists who released Oddity and the others was to create a population of disease-free Tasmanian devils on Maria Island. Oddity is a part of this “insurance population” of devils raised in zoos and wildlife reserves. This means if the facial disease causes the Tasmanian devils to die out in the wild, devils like Oddity can be sent back into disease-free areas of Tasmania, giving devils a chance to survive.
The scientists chose Maria Island for the release because there is no DFTD there. It is separated from mainland Tasmania by the ocean. Devils from the rest of Tasmania can’t get there, which prevents the facial disease from spreading. Oddity started his new life on Maria Island. Life on this island off the coast of Tasmania was a big change for Oddity and the others. These devils had little experience with other kinds of animals and had to explore the land and find new bones. Wise and his fellow scientists monitored Oddity and the 14 other Tasmanian devils. The animals did so well that 13 more devils were released. The 28 original Tasmanian devils have reproduced; there are now around 80 devils. They are doing well on Maria Island, and the plan is considered a success.
Wise says he is “extremely happy to know that animals are getting a chance to be free in the wild in an area that is free of DFTD.It is the ultimate aim of all who work to conserve endangered species.”
23.Why did Wise and his team release the Tasmanian devils like Oddity to Maria Island?
A.To prevent DFTD killing Tasmanian devils out.
B.To find out a treatment for DFTD.
C.To control the DFTD spread on mainland Tasmania.
D.To protect Maria Island from DFTD.
24.What probably made Maria Island chosen for the release?
A.Its rich wildlife. B.Its geographic location.
C.Its natural resources. D.Its improved ecosystem.
25.How was the released Tasmanian devils’ life?
A.Their safety was uncertain. B.Their number was going up.
C.They hardly enjoyed freedom. D.They got well again from DFTD.
26.What does the passage mainly talk about?
A.A program studying Tasmanian devils. B.A disease attacking Tasmanian devils.
C.A step to save Tasmanian devils. D.A perfect place for Tasmanian devils.
(2021·江苏无锡·无锡市江南中学校考二模)If you have ever been swimming in the ocean, you may have noticed that sea water is easier to float in than pool water. Here’s why.

(2021·江苏无锡·无锡市江南中学校考二模)I study English literature at university and have always been proud of Britain’s literary heritage(文学遗产). Some British authors that you may have heard of are Charles Dickens and Jane Austen. These writers are famous all over the world because their books have been translated into many different languages. In the UK, their novels are celebrated as some of the best that have ever been written. We say that these novels are “classic” because they are still read and enjoyed years after their publication.
I read classic novels because they are part of my university lessons but also because I enjoy them. They can teach you a lot about how people used to live and what society was like in the past. Novels like Hard Times by Charles Dickens remind us of the poverty(庄园) in London during the Industrial Revolution(工业革命) while Jane Austen’s fiction shows us what family life was like in the 18th century.
Classic novels usually have memorable stories land interesting characters. One of my favourite books is Charles Dickens Great Expectations. It is about a boy called Pip who suddenly receives a lot of money from a mysterious supporter. As he grows up, his character changes: he becomes quite selfish and mean(吝啬的). Another important character is Miss Havisham. When she was young, her fiancé ran away on their wedding day. She lives in a dark house and still wears her wedding dress. She is a fascinating(迷人的) character, both sad and scary.
Reading classic novels enriches my knowledge and life experience. And it has become part of life.
30.Why is Hard Times mentioned in Paragraph 2?
A.To introduce the university lessons.
B.To remind people of the poverty in London.
C.To let people know about what family life was like.
D.To prove classic novels help people know the past.
31.What can we know about the character Miss Havisham?
A.She is selfish and mean. B.She lives an unhappy life.
C.She loves wedding dresses most. D.She becomes rich with others’ support.
32.What can be a suitable title for the text?
A.Why I like classic novels. B.Why some novels are classic.
C.How to read classic novels. D.How to teach classic novels.
(2021·江苏无锡·无锡市江南中学校考二模)That morning, we noticed a cab following Sir Henry and Dr. Mortimer in London. But who?
We went to Sir Henry’s hotel. Holmes asked Dr. Mortimer if anyone with a black beard lived in or near Baskerville Hall.
“Yes,” said Dr. Mortimer, “Barrymore.”
“We must send a telegram to check whether Barrymore is in London or at Baskerville Hall,” said Holmes.
Sir Henry said he wanted to go to Baskerville Hall.
“OK”, said Holmes. “But you mustn’t go alone. Watson can go with you.”
Sir Henry and I agreed to take the 10:30 train on Saturday.
Holmes thought deeply on the way home: the story of the Hound, Sir Charles’s death, the strange letter, the missing boot and the black-bearded man. He sat in his room all afternoon, smoking and thinking.
Just before dinner, a telegram arrived. It said, “Barrymore is at Baskerville Hall.”
“That becomes a dead end, Watson. We will have to look for another way to go forward.
Just then the door bell rang. It was the cab driver who drove the man with the black beard. “I got a message that you are asking for me”, he said. “I’ve never had a complaint. I came here to ask you what you had against me!”
“No, no, “said Holmes.” Instead, I’ll give you money if you tell me about the man in your cab this morning. He watched this house at 10:00 and then told you to follow the two gentlemen.”
The driver looked surprised and then answered, “The man said he was a detective and that I shouldn’t tell anyone about him.”
“It’s serious, my friend, and you may be in trouble if you refuse to answer.”
“His name,” said the driver, “was Sherlock Holmes.”
I’d never seen Holmes more surprised. Then he laughed. “He scored against me that time, Watson.”
The driver told us everything he knew. Holmes gave him the money and sent him away. “This is a dangerous enemy, Watson.”

(2021·江苏无锡·无锡市江南中学校考二模)We can achieve knowledge either actively or passively. We achieve it actively by direct experience, by testing and proving an idea, or by reasoning.
We achieve knowledge passively by being told by someone else. Most of the learning that takes place in the classroom and the kind that happens when we watch TV or read newspapers or magazines is passive. As we are used to passive learning, it’s not surprising that we depend on it in our everyday communication with friends and co-workers.
Unfortunately, passive learning has a serious problem. It makes us tend to accept what we are told even when it is nothing but hearsay and rumor(谣言).
Did you ever play the game Rumor? It begins when one person writes down a message but doesn’t show it to anyone. Then the person whispers it, word for word, to another person. That person, in turn, whispers it to still another, and so on, through all the people playing the game. The last person writes down the message word for word as he or she hears it. Then the two written statements are compared. Typically, the original message has changed.
That’s what happens in daily life. The simple fact that people repeat a story in their own words changes the story. Then, too, most people listen imperfectly. And many enjoy adding their own creative understanding to a story, trying to improve on it, stamping it with their own personal style. Yet those who hear it think they know.
This process is also found among scholars and authors: A statement of opinion by one writer may be re-stated as fact by another, who may in turn be quoted(引用) by yet another; and this process may continue, unless it occurs to someone to question the facts on which the original writer based his opinion or to challenge the explanation he placed upon those facts.
36.According to the passage, active learning may take place in ________.
A.reading interesting travel journals B.carrying out scientific research
C.listening to the teacher in class D.watching news programs on TV
37.What does the underlined word “it” in Paragraph 2 refers to ________.
A.active learning B.newspapers C.passive learning D.classroom

A.a message may be changed when being passed on
B.people like telling lies when playing games
C.playing games can make people more active
D.people may have problems with their sense of hearing
39.What can be inferred from the text?
A.Scholars and authors can’t be trusted.
B.Active learning matters more than passive learning.
C.People like spreading rumors in daily life.
D.Passive learning may not be reliable(可靠的).

(2021·江苏无锡·校联考二模)Have you ever been to a buffet (自助餐) restaurant? You can eat as much as you want for one low price at these places.
Sadly, many of these restaurants have closed in the US because of the COVID-19 pandemic (大流行). At buffet restaurants, people have to share one serving area when they get their food, which makes it easier for sickness to spread. But for a long time, they were quite popular.
“Buffet” is the French word for sideboard — a piece of furniture that was used to serve food and display (展示) serving dishes. The word was later used to describe a new dining idea: ________, including soups, salads, and other dishes that are easy to share.
Most buffet restaurants in the US are “all you can eat” — that is, you pay one price and can go back to the buffet table for seconds, thirds, or even fourths a day!
In fact, one of my first experiences with Chinese food was at a buffet. Chinese buffets are very common in the US. Even in the small town where I went to college, there were three different Chinese buffet restaurants. I would often go there with my friends on weekends. We would pay just eight dollars to eat plate after plate of kung pao chicken, ginger beef, and egg rolls. For kids like us who didn’t have much money, the Chinese buffet was a lifesaver.
Here in China, I sometimes go to a Sunday buffet at a fancy (高档的) hotel. It’s a bit expensive, but when I go, I can eat as much steak and shrimps as I want.
43.What can we learn about the buffet restaurants from the passage?
A.There are more dishes in the buffet restaurants than in common restaurants.
B.People may get ill easily in the buffet restaurants.
C.The price of the food in the buffet restaurants is very low.
D.People can go back to the buffet restaurants many times a week if they pay one price.
44.Which of the following sentences is the most suitable for the blank ________?
A.sharing the dishes you have with others

(2021·江苏无锡·校联考二模)Development in technology now tie us closer than ever before. We can call our friends from a thousand kilometers away. We can text. We can talk to each other at the push of a button on WeChat.
There are, of course, advantages to these modern ways of communicating. However, do we ever think about what we are losing? As someone who likes writing and receiving letters, I often feel sad that so few people now give letter writing a fair chance.
While you might call letter writing old-fashioned, I believe we should all write and send letters more often.
To begin with, there’s lots of love in a handwritten letter. This is why texting or calling doesn’t feel as special as letter — it’s more rushed. These days, we want to get things done in the quickest way. To save time, we often use shortened sentences.
Handwritten letters, however, pass much more warmth because we take the time. Writing letters allows us to express to someone how much we care about him in a detailed way.
So when we receive a letter, we feel we are loved, remembered and missed. In fact, the process(过程) of writing a letter can make us feel happy too. When we sit down and put our heart into what we are writing, we allow ourselves to a break from the stress of our lives.
Moreover, while texts come and go, letters can be kept forever. We can always go back and read them again. By keeping a letter, we keep a part of that person and his relationship with us.
Now, pick up your pen! Write to your cousins about your school. Let your friends know how much you miss them. Let’s bring back the art of letter writing.

Dorothy and her friends were nervous to get out of the forest as soon as they could, so they hurried along the yellow brick road. It was not long before they came to a wider river.
“What can we do now?” Dorothy cried. “There isn’t a tree tall enough to fall across this river.”
“There’s no problem,” the Scarecrow said. “The Tin Woodman will build a raft (木筏).”
And this is what the Tin Woodman did. And while he was busy making the raft, Dorothy found some wild fruit and nuts, which she ate hungrily. Then, because it was taking the Tin Woodman a long time to finish the raft, Dorothy lay down and went to sleep.
The night passed without any problems, and the next morning the small raft was ready. Dorothy sat in the middle with Toto. The lion stood at one end and nearly made the boat sink (沉没) because he was so big and heavy. The Scarecrow and the Tin Woodman stood at the other end. They both had long poles (杆子) that they used to push the raft through the water.
At first all went well, but then the river became deep, but the poles couldn’t not touch the bottom. The Tin Woodman said, “If we cannot stay near the land and the yellow brick road, the Wicked Witch of the West will use her magic and hurt us.”
“And then we won’t meet the Wizard, and I won’t get any wisdom,” the Scarecrow said.
“And I won’t get a heart,” the Tin Woodman said.
“And I won’t get any courage,” the Lion said.
“And I’ll never get home to Kansas,” Dorothy said. “We must do something.”
The Scarecrow was able to push the raft to the river bank. Dorothy, Toto, the Lion and the Tin Woodman got off. Before the Scarecrow could get off, however, the boat moved away from the river bank and carried the Scarecrow down the river.
Dorothy said, “Perhaps we’ll meet the raft further down the river. The most important thing now is to get back to the yellow brick road and continue on our way to the City of Emeralds.”

(2021·江苏无锡·统考二模)Hello, everybody! Thank you. I’ve talked about responsibility (责任) a lot-teachers’ responsibility, your parents’ responsibility, your government’s responsibility. At the end of the day, we can have the most dedicated (献身的) teachers, the most supportive parents, the best schools in the world. But none of it will make a difference unless you show up to those schools, unless you pay attention to those teachers, unless you listen to your parents and put in the hard work it takes to succeed. That’s what I want to focus on today: the responsibility each of you has for your education.
No matter what you want to do with your life, you’ll need an education to do it. You’ll need the knowledge and problem-solving skills you learn in science and math to cure diseases like cancer and AIDS, and to develop new energy technologies and protect our environment.
You’ll need the insights and critical-thinking skills you gain in history and social studies to fight poverty and homelessness, crime and discrimination (歧视), and make our nation more fair and more free. You’ll need the creativity and cleverness you develop in all your classes to build new companies that will create new jobs and increase our economy.
I know it’s not always easy to do well in school. I know a lot of you have challenges in your lives right now that can make it hard to focus on your schoolwork. But none of that is an excuse for not trying.
No one’s written your destiny (命运) for you, because you write your own destiny. You make your own future. No one’s born being good at all things. You become good at things through hard work. Don’t be afraid to ask questions. Don’t be afraid to ask for help when you need it.
Now, your families, your teachers, and I are doing everything we can to make sure you have the education. But you’ve got to do your part, too. So I expect all of you to put your best effort into everything you do. Don’t let yourself down. Make us all proud. Thank you very much, everybody. God bless you.

(2021·江苏无锡·统考二模)Ben was awakened by a gunshot. The sharp noise came through the thick stone walls of the house. It was cold in the bedroom and Ben was shaking as he got out of bed. He put on his eyeglasses and went over to the window.
The field was covered with white frost. Nothing moved out there in the deep quiet just before sunrise. Ben looked past the field to the thick woods. Two weeks ago, he saw a deer among the trees. He held his breath with excitement; then the deer walked off. Ben wondered where the shot had come from. He thought perhaps he had dreamed he heard a gunshot.
He looked out toward the frozen lake. Near the trees, he saw a shining piece of metal. When it moved, Ben saw that it was a long gun. A minute later, a man came out of the woods. He wore hunting clothes. Suddenly a bird flew upward. The man quickly put the gun to his shoulder and shot it. Ben watched the bird, praying it had not been hurt. It flew near the ground and went into some tall grass. Safe, Ben thought.
The hunter did not move for a moment, then he began to follow the bird. Hate for the hunter burned inside of Ben. “Hey!” he shouted. His voice cut through the silence. The hunter stopped, but then continued to follow the bird. Ben shouted again, but this time the hunter did not stop and Ben started to move toward him. But Ben was in his night clothes and he did not go far. Instead, he returned to the house. He got a metal shovel and hit the stone sides of the house so that the noise would warn the birds and animals of danger. The hunter looked back at Ben. “No hunting!” Ben shouted.
Ben had just bought this house in the woods. He wanted to protect everything on his land. He thought that everyone would obey the signs: “No Hunting.” Ben had just finished putting on his clothes when he heard another gunshot. This troubled him deeply. How could he stop this hunter? He walked toward the lake. He did not want to fight, but the man must go. He walked quietly. He wanted to surprise the hunter. But then, what would he do? He could not fight the hunter.
Suddenly he heard a bird’s wings beating the dry grass. Ben moved quickly toward the sound. He saw a colored head ... The head of a beautiful pheasant bird. The bird did not move until Ben came close. Then it tried to fly away, but one wing was broken. Ben lifted the bird and held it close against his body. The bird fought to escape, but soon lay quietly in Ben’s arms. Its body was warm and heavy. Ben decided to take the bird home and fix its broken wings so that it could fly again. He was almost through the woods when he heard the hunter behind him. “You just find that bird?” the hunter asked. “Yes,” Ben answered. “It is mine!” Ben was afraid and tried to answer, but his mouth was too dry to speak. But he wet his lips and said “No.” “I shot him and I said he was mine!” “But he is not dead yet,” Ben answered, “and besides, anything on my land belongs to me.” The hunter reached out for the bird. “I will have to kill it,” he said. “That bird will soon die anyway.” Ben got angry. “Get out of here!” he said. “I told you before and I am telling you again: get off my land!” The hunter looked down at the little man and smiled. “Say, who are you?” Ben’s voice shook with both fear and anger. “I own this land. (2021·江苏无锡·统考二模)Like many inventions, language translators were imagined by writers long before they became real. In Hugo Gemsback’s 1911 novel A Romance of the Year 2660, characters use a video telephone that can translate from one language to another. A language translator also appears in Murray Leinster’s 1945 First Contact. In that story, humans and creatures from another planet made a translation device together after asking for contact with one another. The idea of the language translator didn’t become truly popular, however, until the “general translator” appeared in the 1970 Star Trek series, which delighted (取悦) television viewers at that time. That device was general in the sense that it could translate any language that it came across.
The first real language translator was shown by engineers from IBM company and Georgetown University in 1954. Their machine could only translate Russian sentences into English.
Today, online translations can be accessed (获取) easily at no cost to users. With translation apps, users sometimes don’t even have to look things up. All they need to do is point their cellphone’s camera at some writing, and a translation appears at once. If users want to translate something being said aloud, they just turn on their phone’s microphone. All of these features save time and effort.
Translation apps on phones make foreign travel much easier than before. They are invaluable and convenient when it comes to communicating with taxi drivers or hotel waiters who don’t speak a traveler’s native language. But these apps are far from perfect. Sometimes a translation makes no sense, forcing the user to guess what the translation means. At other times, the user might not know that the translation has failed until he or she shows it to a native speaker.
62.It can be inferred from the passage that ________.

A.By telling that online translation will change our life.
B.By explaining that online translation has its weakness.
C.By introducing how to use translation apps in travelling.

65.What is the best title for the passage?

(2022·江苏无锡·江苏省锡山高级中学实验学校校考二模)Cathy Krause, who works as an emergency dispatcher (紧急调度员) at the Rockwood Police Department, is tired of getting calls from children, most of which are usually a joke. However, a phone call from 5-year-old Jackson McManus who said his father was in trouble was the real deal.
"I've not had the call like this before," Krause said as she spoke about the 911 call. Krause was able to calm the boy down and ask him questions to help police find his location and also gather information about the situation. "I asked him plenty of questions and he was so good," she said. "He was a little nervous in the beginning, but he did everything I asked him to do." Krause asked Jackson if his father was awake. Jackson went to check on his father who couldn't give any replies when he called out his name. This led Krause to believe that the man was unconscious (无意识).
Jackson told his father's name but she was still unable to locate the address. She then asked the boy where he went to school and told him to look at the garage and see if there were any numbers. "I already had a car look for you," Krause said as she continued to talk to the child.
The boy mentioned a street called Groat Street which is between Huron River Drive and Woodruff Road. With these details, she realized that the boy lived at the southern end of the Brownstown Township. She told Jackson to stand outside his house and wave so that police officers would be able to see him.
Even though Jackson got some of the numbers of his address wrong, police saw him outside his home and the father was quickly taken to a local hospital. He is now in good condition.

(2022·江苏无锡·江苏省锡山高级中学实验学校校考二模)What is the first thing you notice when you walk into a shop? The products displayed at the entrance? Or the soft background music?
But have you ever noticed the smell? If it isn't special, the answer is likely to be no. But though a shop's scent (气味) may not be compared with sounds, it is certainly there. And it is providing to be an increasing powerful tool in encouraging people to purchase (购买).
A brand store has become famous for its special scent which floats through the quite dark hall and out to the entrance. A smell may be attractive but it may not just be used for freshening air. One sports goods company once reported that when it first introduced scent into its stores, customers' willingness to purchase increased by 80 percent.
When it comes to the best shopping streets in Paris, scent is just as important to a brand's success as the quality of its window displays and goods on sales. That is mainly because shopping is a very different experience to what it used to be.
Some years ago, the focus (聚焦) for brand name shopping was on a few people with sales assistants' disproving attitude (伪善的态度) and don't-touch-what-you-can't-afford displays. Now the rise of electronic purchase has opened up famous brands to a wider audience. But while e-shops can use sights and sounds, only bricks-and-mortar stores (实体店) can offer a full experience from the minute customers step through the door to the moment they leave. Another brand store seeks to (追寻) much more than a shop, but rather a destination. And scent is just one way to achieve this.
Now a famous store uses man-made smell to make sure that the soft scent of baby powder floats through the kid department, and coconut scent in the swimsuit department. A department store has even opened a new lab, inviting customers on a journey into the store's windows to smell books, pots and drawers, in search of their perfect scent.
88.According to the passage, what is an increasingly powerful tool in the success of some brand store?
A.Friendly assistant. B.Special scents. C.Soft background music. D.Attractive window display.
