Looking back at these past three years
Preparing for art festivals
I remember many things
And making a great big mess
Tying to be on time for morning readings
Have fun at New Year’s parties

Wishing everyone the best
I remember the excitement
We have learned a different language
Of the school sports day each year
That is from a foreign land
The many long hours of training
English brings many challenges
Pride of overcoming fear
We work hard to understand
I remember starting day one
And now it’s time to graduate
The shyest in my whole class
We will leave our lovely school
Never speaking to anyone
I can’t believe it has been three years
And thinking I would not pass
I’m trying to keep my cool
Then slowly I made some new friends

“Oh boys, don’t throw stones at the poor bird,” said an old grey-headed man.
“Sir, ” said a little one, “She makes such a loud noise that we can’t bear her. ”
“I am afraid the stone will rebound (反弹) and hurt you as long as you live!”
“Rebound!We don’t understand you, sir!”
“Well, I will tell you a true story. ”
“Fifty years ago, I liked throwing stones because I had no other boy to play with and I became very skillful. One day I went to work for an old couple who were very friendly to everybody, even to the birds. And the birds seemed to love the old couple, too. For seven years a bird had come and built her nest(鸟巢)in the same place. She and her mate had just returned on the day I went to work and the old couple welcomed them happily. (2022·江苏徐州·校考二模)What goes into mind when you think of kung fu, also known as wushu? Maybe the image of Shaolin monks fighting with a serious look in their eyes, or popular children’s movies like Kung Fu Panda. But are they really kung fu?
Recently, Laurence J. Brahm, a documentary filmmaker from the United States, explored this question in Searching for Kung Fu. In the movie, Brahm began a journey of a kung fu pilgrimage(朝圣), traveling to cities in China and the US to search for the origin(起源) and value of kung fu.
Brahm himself is a kung fu lover who has been practicing for more than 40 years. For him, practicing this craft was more than fun.
Around 10 years ago, Brahm was unable to use one of his legs for about two years. But by practicing martial arts (武术) “very, very slowly”, he was able to recover step by step. Now, kung fu has become a daily activity for him.
“Martial arts can help us connect our body, connect our blood flow, and also help connect us into our environment to increase our awareness.” Brahm said.
Still others find other meanings in the practice.
“Chinese kung fu is full of Chinese philosophies(哲学)and core(核心)values,” Hong Kong actor Bruce Leung told Xinhua.
⑧Non-fight is one of these values, which is shown both in the name and the practice. Wu, is made up of two characters—age, meaning “dagger-ax”, and zhi, meaning “to stop”. So, the meaning of kung fu in Chinese is the art of stopping fighting. Kung fu artists always end up with baoquan. This lets each person know that there is nothing hidden and shows trust.
Brahm’s sees Kung fu as “a mirror of Chinese culture”.
The traditional values of kung fu, actually, are in the minds of all Chinese people. Why does China want to be in harmony with other nations? “Its part of the psychology(心理) of the Chinese people. It’s also national psychology.” Brahm told Xinhua.

(2022·江苏徐州·统考二模)I am Jim Hawkins and my story begins many years ago, when my father worked at the Admiral Benbow inn.
One day a tall man with a scar (伤疤) on his face arrived. He opened the door of the inn, singing the song I know so well:
“Fifteen men on the dead man’s chest — Yo-ho-ho, and a bottle of rum!”
“A glass of rum,” he said when he came inside.
“This is a pleasant inn.” he said. “Do you have many customers?”
“Not many,” my father answered. “Well, this is the place for me. You can call me ‘captain’,” he said. Then he asked a man to carry his large sailor’s chest to his room.
“I’m a simple man,” he told my father. “Rum and bacon and eggs is all I want. Here are four gold coins to start. Tell me when I have to pay more.”
During the day he went to the cliffs (悬崖) with his telescope and in the evening he sat by the fire drinking rum and water. He asked about sailors every day. We soon understood that he wanted to keep away from them. When a sailor visited the inn, the captain was always very quiet. One day he asked me, “If you see a sailor with one leg, tell me as soon as he arrives.”
When the captain drank too much rum, he sang sea songs and told the other customers terrible stories about his life at sea.
He stayed month after month, but he didn’t give my father any more money. My poor father was too frightened to ask. Everyone was frightened of the captain and his stories. The only person who was not afraid of him was the local doctor and magistrate, Dr. Livesey.
“If you keep drinking rum like that, you will very soon be dead,” he warned the captain.

(2021·江苏徐州·校考二模)Have you ever noticed that we only see certain animals in certain seasons? Many animals move from one area to another at different times during the years. This movement is called migration.
Animals migrate for different reasons. Some, like the manatee and the Ruby-Throated Humming bird, migrate to stay warm in winter
Some animals migrate for food, water and protection. Caribous move south each winter to forests. The forests protect them from the cold winters and offer a better food supply.
Other animals, like the Emperor Penguin, migrate for their children. These penguins choose the coldest time of year and the coldest place on the planet—Antarctica, to raise their young. They migrate inland, away from the sea, so they are far away from predators when their eggs hatch.
These journeys are often thousands of miles. It’s amazing that so many animals are able to find their way back to the very same places in the world year after year.
Loggerhead Turtles travel thousands of miles to lay their eggs on the very same beach where they were hatched themselves. California Gray Whales have the longest migration journey of any mammal. They travel 10,000-14,000 miles round trip each year.
We know the many reasons why animals migrate, but no one really knows how they find their way. They do not have a map, compass or GPS to guide them. Maybe you will become the famous scientist that solves the mystery of animal migration.

——Charles Dickens
One Christmas Eve, old Scrooge and Bob were working busily in his office. It was a cold, foggy day. The fog was so thick that the houses opposite were like ghosts. It was only three o’clock in the afternoon, but it was already quite dark.
“Merry Christmas, Uncle! God bless you!” cried a happy voice. It was Scrooge’s nephew.
“Bah!” said Scrooge “Humbug(骗人的话)!”
“Christmas is a humbug! Surely you don’t mean that, Uncle.” Said his nephew.

“OK, then,” replied the nephew cheerfully. “What reason have you got to be sad? You are rich. Don’t be angry, Uncle!”said his nephew.
“What else can I be?” answered the uncle, “I live in a world of fools! Merry Christmas! What’s Christmas time to you? It’s a time for paying bills without money. It’s a time for finding yourself a year older, but not richer. Everyone who goes around saying ‘Merry Christmas’ should have his tongue cut out. Yes, he should!”

Bob, standing in the corner of the room, applauded (鼓掌). He realized his mistake very soon, and went quickly back to his work, but Scrooge had heard him.

“No. Sir. I was doing the speed limit—exactly twenty-two miles an hour!” The old woman said in a proud voice. The officer, almost unable to control his chuckle(窃笑), explained to her that “22” was the route number, not the speed limit.
A bit embarrassed, the woman smiled and thanked the officer for pointing out her misunderstanding.
“But before I let you go, Ma’am, I have to ask…Is everyone in this car OK? These women seem to be shaking badly and they haven’t made a single sound this whole time,” the officer asked.

(2022·江苏徐州·统考二模)Cats and dogs are some of the most popular pets. There is an old question—which one is better and why?
If you ask me, I’m a cat person through and through.
To me, there is nothing better than having a cat of your own. Every time I see a cat, I am filled with so much fun. Don’t even get me started on all of the cute cat videos online.
Cats are very careful in life. When they are in danger, their eyes will be much bigger, their tails will be like a stick and they shout very loudly. After the danger, they will relax and then immediately go to sleep again!
Cats are very independent(独立的). They like to have their own space. But this doesn’t mean that they don’t love people. Cats may seem cold at first, but they can quickly warm up to their owners and become their very best friends.
Even though they are independent, cats can also be a lot of responsibility(责任)and hard work.
For example, cats like to be clean. You usually don’t need to give them baths, but you do need to keep their fir clean and clean their litter boxes(猫砂盆)every day.
Not only this, cats also need exercise and a healthy diet. Cats don’t need to go outside for a daily walk like dogs do, but it’s important to give them a lot of exercise through playtime.
For me, cats are the perfect friends. There’s nothing better than a cat sitting next to you after a long day’s work.

I love Bing Dwen Dwen very much. Look, I have a key ring of it. It’s the mascot of the 2022 Winter Olympics. It’s a cartoon image of a panda wearing a spacesuit. “Bing” means “ice” in Chinese which is a symbol of winter sports. “Dwen” suggests health and strong and “Dwen Dwen” gives the image a more friendly feel. The red heart shape in its left palm means welcoming the friends from other countries.“Bing Dwen Dwen” shows the spirit of the Olympics, including a strong mind and healthy body. It looks more like an astronaut than a panda from the looks. Isn’t that fun?
Lisa
Shuey Rhon Rhon impresses me most. It’s the mascot of the 2022 Winter Paralympics. It’s cute and lovely. It looks like a red lantern hanging on homes and streets to celebrate Chinese New Year. Red is the colour of hope and good luck, so people think their dreams will come true in the new year. “Shuey” means “snow” in Chinese. “Rhon Rhon” are two different characters (字) with the same pronunciation. The mascot “Shuey Rhon Rhon” (雪容融) stands for communication among different cultures. The choice of the lantern is also seen as the symbol of harvest, warmth and light. So whenever I see it, I feel warm.

Just free your imagination and you’ll still be surprised after you watch Wang Zi’s mime(默剧)performance.
Wang, 31, is a professional mime from Beijing. He has been practicing the art for nine years and was named the best performer at the Wuzhen Theater Festival in 2017.He performs through body language instead of words.
According to Wang, mimimg sometimes can be very exaggerated(夸张的) that it looks like a cartoon, which is something the audience rarely sees in normal performances. “Miming is a very free form of art for both the performers and the audience,” he added. “Whatever language you speak, you can understand it. It’s all about imagination and that’s the biggest attraction of miming.” Mimes still have to have good acting skills, of course. “Everyone knows how to speak, but it requires years of training to make your body expressive,” Wang explained. To improve his performances, he has borrowed skills from other art forms like voice stunts(口技) and the audience interaction seen in clowning(扮小丑).
Nine years ago, when Wang graduated from the Performance Institute of Beijing Film Academy, he became interested in miming but couldn’t find a teacher to learn from. He explored on his own and later founded the Nadading Troupe(拿大顶剧社), which is said to be Beijing’s only mime troupe.
Although miming is still not a big thing in China, it’s a “direct art”. “Once you watch it, you can feel it,” Wang said.

(2021·江苏徐州·统考二模)In choosing a friend, one should be very careful. A good friend can help you study. You can have fun together and make each other happy. Sometimes you will meet fair-weather friends. They will be with you only if you have money or luck, but when you are down, they will run away.
How do I know when I have found a good friend?
Above all else, I think understanding is the most important. A good friend tries to understand how another person is feeling. He is not quick to give his opinion. Instead, he tries to learn from others. He puts himself in the other person’s place, and he tries to think of ways to be helpful.
A good friend is honest. He does not look for faults (过错) in others. He notices their good points. In short, a friend will try to understand me and accept me.
Another quality of a friend is reliability. I can always depend on a reliable friend. If he tells me he will meet me somewhere at a certain time, I can be sure that he will be there. If I need help, he will do his best to help me. If I am in trouble, he will not run away from me. If I have any secrets, I can always share with him and he’ll keep them for me.
There is a fourth quality that makes a friend special. A special friend is someone with whom we can have fun. We should enjoy our lives, and we would enjoy our friendship. That is why I especially like friends who are fun to be with. We share experience and learn from each other. A good friend has a good sense of humour, too. He likes to laugh with me. That is how we share in the joy of being friends. And I know that he is looking for the same quality in me.
When I meet someone who is reliable, honest and understanding, I know I’ve found a true friend!

(2021·江苏徐州·统考二模)Delia was a young pianist with a kind, generous nature. Her husband Joe was a young painter who is honest and hardworking. They lived in a small flat after they got married.
Each of them was taking lessons—Joe with a famous art teacher, and Delia with a great pianist from Germany. They were the best teachers, so lessons were expensive, more than they could really afford, but... when you love your art, nothing is too much.
And soon the money began to run out and they couldn’t afford the lessons any more. Then one day Delia came home and told Joe that she had met a man. The man’s daughter, Sally, wanted to learn the piano and he was going to pay her 50 dollars an hour.
“Delia,” Joe said, “I’d be much happier if you go on with your lessons.” Delia said that it didn’t matter. She said, “When I’ve earned some money, I’ll start again. When you love your art, nothing is too much.” But Joe decided that he was also going to stop his lessons and paint pictures and try to sell them.
A few days later, Joe came home and proudly took 200 dollars from his pocket. Delia laughed and asked him where he’d got it from. “A man from Vermont bought one of my paintings. And he wants to buy more!” So the two of them were happy for a while. They didn’t have to worry anymore about finding the money to buy food and pay the bills. Joe sat down and told Delia to sit down too. “Delia, what have you been doing the last two weeks?” he asked. So I can't work any more. I’m sorry, Joe, but we'll still have money from the man in Vermont, won’t we?”
Joe looked at her. “There’s no man in Vermont,” he said. “I haven’t sold any paintings. I’ve been working in a medicine shop, and today someone came from the restaurant to buy bandages fora woman who’d burned her hand. So when I saw you—well, I guessed.”

98.词义猜测题。通过第五段中“ If he tells me he will meet me somewhere at a certain time, … I can always share with him and he’ll keep them for me.”
通过第四段中“A good friend is honest. He does not look for faults (过错) in others.”可知,好朋友是真诚的,不会寻找别人的过错。推测C选项“总是要指出对方的错误”符合题意。故选C。
