Unluckily, the poor boy’s father passed away because of a terrible accident two years ago, leaving Ben and his mother. Last Sunday afternoon, he went home from his school without saying anything. There would be a class meeting the next day. It was a rule that all the parents had to attend it . However, Ben didn’t want his mother to go to the meeting because she was a deaf-mute (聋哑人). With such a deaf-mute mother, he was afraid that other students and their parents would laugh at him. It was just what he could not stand.
Seeing her son getting home, the mother made a gesture (手势) of “I love you” as usual. (2022·江苏连云港·校考二模)The next day was sunny and hot. I put on my new clothes, paddled to the river bank in the canoe and walked to Silas Phelps’ place. I was climbing over the fence that surrounded the small wooden house when the dogs started barking. The noise brought a woman and some children to the door. The woman seemed very happy to see me. She ran up to me, smiling. “You’re here at last!” she said. Then she hugged me and kissed me and hugged me again.
    “Yes”, I replied politely.
“Look, Silas!” the woman said. “It’s Tom! Tom Sawyer! He’s arrived at last!”
I nearly fell on the floor with surprise. She thought I was Tom Sawyer! Now I knew exactly what to say because I knew Tom’s family well. I talked about Sid and Mary, Aunt Polly and everybody else for two hours. Then in the distance I heard a steamboat.
“Perhaps Tom is on that boat!” I thought. I had to stop him before he arrived at the farm.
“Aunt Sally!” I said. “I left my bag in the town. I must go and pick it up.”
“Your Uncle Silas will take you, Tom,” she said.
“It’s OK, Aunt Sally. I can drive the wagon,” I replied.
I was halfway to town when I saw another wagon coming towards me. Tom Sawyer was in it. When he saw me he looked terrified. “Huck! Why have you come back to scare me? I never hurt you,” he said.
“I haven’t come back, Tom. I’ve never been away.”
    “Aren’t you a ghost? Aren’t you dead?”
“No, it was a trick. Come and feel me if you don’t believe me.”
He did, and then he was sure that I wasn’t a ghost. He was glad to see me and wanted to hear about my adventures.
“I tell you later,” I said. “I have another problem now.” And I told him about Jim.
    “I’m going to rescue(营救)him,” I said.
“I’ll help you,” Tom replied excitedly. He loved an adventure more than anything else in the world.

(2022·江苏连云港·校考二模)Thousands of years ago, Chinese poet Qu Yuan wrote the poem Tianwen, meaning Quest for Heavenly Truth. He came up with a series of questions about the sky, stars, nature and the world around us. The poem showed his spirit of finding the truth.
Inspired (激励) by the great poet, China named its latest series of planetary exploration missions (行星探测任务) after the poem in 2020. The first one in the series—a Mars exploration mission—has been named Tianwen 1, the China National Space Administration (CNSA) said on April 24, 2020, China’s Space Day. This shows China’s wish to explore the universe (宇宙) .
China has made great progress in space exploration. In 1970, China sent its first man-made Earth satellite (卫星), becoming the fifth country in the world to send a man-made satellite independently. Since 2003, China has carried out six Shenzhou manned missions. China’s moon exploration missions—the Chang’e series—started in 2007. In December 2018, China became the first country to send the probe (探测器) Chang’e 4 to the moon’s far side.
The Tianwen series will follow the Shenzhou and Chang’e series and move further into space. The first step is to send a Mars probe, which means the start of China’s exploration of the red planet. The probe is planned to circle around, land on and explore Mars in one mission. It is the first to finish all of these tasks in one mission. The Long March 5 rocket has sent the probe to Mars.

(2022·江苏常州·校考二模)When my oldest son was in high school, he planned to attend a concert with his young friends. To my surprise, Aron invited me to go along. I quickly accepted. However, by the time the date of the concert arrived, my youngest son had been ill, and I was worried about him. My husband encouraged me to attend the concert, promising he would look after our youngest son. Finally, it hit me. Aron was 16 years old. How many years would I have to do something fun with him before he went to college? And how many youths invite their mothers to attend a concert with them that was clearly for teens? The decision was made. I’d not miss this chance.
At the concert, I sat with Aron in the third row, stuffing (填满) cotton in my ears to block out the loud music of the first performer. I stood when the kids stood, clapped (鼓掌) when they clapped, and never let anyone know how nervous I was to feel the floor shaking under my feet. Aron and his friends were amazed at my enthusiasm (热情).
When we left the concert, my ears were ringing, but it quickly passed. So did my son’s teenage years. Soon he was in college and away from home. I missed him more than I could say. On days when I was especially lonely for his happy smile, I would think back to the concert we attended and thank myself again that I didn’t miss a chance to spend time with my son.
Aron is now grown and has a family of his own, but we are still very close. Some days he calls just to chat and tell me about his day. I drop everything and enjoy the moment, knowing these times shall pass.
16.Why did Aron’s mother decide to attend a concert with Aron?
A.Because she showed great interest in a concert with loud music.
B.Because Aron’s father promised her to look after the sick 16-year-old child.
C.Because she valued the chance to spend time with her son.
D.Because it was not polite to refuse Aron’s rare invitation.
17.Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage?
A.Aron’s mother loved Aron more than her youngest son.
B.Aron’s mother really enjoyed every minute of the concert.
C.Though Aron was very shy, his mother was still proud of him.
D.It was the loud music that led to the shaking of the floor during the concert.
18.What can we learn from the passage?
A.It’s necessary for parents to spend time with their children all the time.
B.Aron’s mother sometimes regretted attending the concert when thinking back.
C.Aron felt lonely from time to time after he attended college far from home.
D.Aron still has a close relationship with his mother even after he becomes an adult.

(2022·江苏常州·校考二模)The term “social phobia(社交恐惧症)” seems to have taken on popularity these days. Young people in particular are describing themselves as having “social phobia”. They prefer not to go out much, saying that it’s hard for them to make new friends or socialize. But is this a “real” disorder(病症)?
In fact, this is just a reaction to certain social situations. US researcher Ty Tashiro wrote the book Awkward(笨拙): The Science of Why We’re. Socially Awkward and Why That’s Awesome. He explains that some people don’t “read” social situations correctly and therefore end up feeling uncomfortable.
For example, they might be afraid of breaking some kind of unspoken rule. Therefore, they start to act awkwardly because they don’t want this to happen. This might make them unwilling to socialize. They prefer to stay in instead of going out to meet new people. But this doesn’t mean they have social phobia.
“Real” social phobia—also known as social worry—is much more serious. People with social worry want to go out and interact with people but are so terrified of doing it that they cannot leave their homes. Their brains simply won’t allow them to interact with others in a normal(正常地)way. People with social phobia disorder can even experience panic attacks(惊恐发作).
Luckily, social worry can be treated. Some people use self-help books to help them gain more control over their minds. Therapy can also help.
19.What does Paragraph 1 say about some young people?
    A.They often go out alone.
B.They find it hard to socialize in different situations.
C.They develop new social skills to make themselves go out.
D.They don’t like to make new friends.
20.What causes people to have social worry?
A.They have a disorder in their brains. B.They aren’t interested in social interaction.
C.They are experiencing illnesses. D.They don’t trust anyone except families.
21.What does the story try to explain?
A.How to improve our social skills. B.Why people often feel worried.
C.What real social phobia is like. D.How social phobia influences everyone.

(2022·江苏常州·校考二模)Imagine this: you and your friend are on a video call. He or she picks up a book, and you feel like you are holding the book as well. You can shake hands or give your friend a high five, even though you are in different places.
A pair of special gloves might make this a reality. Researchers at the University of New South Wales, Australia, have made gloves that can recreate the sense of touch. They call this haptic device(触觉装置)a “soft skin stretch device”(SSD).
The SSD works like this: One user’s gloves create 3D force signals when they touch something. The signals are sent to the other user’s gloves, which vibrate(震动)to create the same force that the first user is experiencing. This allows the second user to experience the same sense of touch.
The SSD allows you to feel force, vibration and movement. “It is like wearing a second skin,” said Thanh Nho Do, one of the researchers who created the gloves.
Haptic technology is already being widely used. For example, the trackpads(触控板)in notebook computers use vibration to make it feel like you are clicking a real mouse. However, it is difficult to recreate the sense of touch in virtual(虚拟的)environments or remotely, according to Mai Thanh Thai, lead researcher of the SSD project. The SSD is special because it has a high level of sensitivity(灵敏度)even when it is used continuously. This makes it feel more realistic.
The SSD could be used in medical practice. Two doctors in separate places could work together during an operation—one touches the patient with the SSD while the other doctor feels the same sensation and completes the real operation.
22.What is the “SSD” in the story?
A.A video chat app. B.A special pair of gloves.
C.A computer hard drive. D.A winter overcoat.
23.What does the underlined word “signal” mean in Paragraph 3?
    A.标志 B.信号 C.符号 D.姿势
24.Why does the SSD feel so realistic?
A.Because it creates vibrations. B.Because it strengthens the senses.
C.Because it is highly sensitive. D.Because it works remotely.
25.What do we know from the story?
A.The SSD aims to improve video calls. B.Haptic devices are hard to use.
C.The SSD makes remote operations possible. D.Haptic technology is mostly used in games.

    (2022·江苏常州·校考二模)
There are a few different kinds of hockey, including ice hockey and field hockey. One of the biggest differences between the sports is the surface on which they are played. Some suggest that field hockey has been around for thousands of years. There is evidence to support that a similar game was played by ancient people in Greece and Rome.
Ice hockey has been around, officially, since the late 1800s. This is when the rules were made by J.A.Creighton. The first league was in place by the early 1900s. Later, ice hockey became an Olympic sport.
Hockey is a team sport with six players on two opposing teams. The game is played on a rink of ice with two goals at each end. The standard rink size is 200 feet long and 85 feet wide. Players, all wearing ice skates, move a disk called a puck around the ice. Their purpose is to shoot the puck into the other team’s goal. The goal is a net that is six feet wide and four feet tall. Each goal is guarded by a goalie, who is the only one that can touch the puck with his hockey stick as well as any part of his body. Goalies can even use their feet to stop the puck from getting into the net.
A hockey stick is what players use to move the puck. It is usually 5 to 6 feet in length with a flat blade at the end. Hockey sticks are straight sticks made of wood. The puck is made of vulcanized (硫化的) rubber, which is a much better material than the first pucks. It’s said that the first informal hockey games were played with pucks made of frozen cow waste! The modern puck is typically one inch thick and three inches in diameter.
36 Instead, the names of the winning hockey team’s players, coaches, and managers are added to the presentation cup. There are five rings of names. The oldest ring is removed when a new one is added.
Today, ice hockey is the most popular team sport played on the ice all over the world.
26.From the passage, we know that ________ decides what kind of hockey it is.
A.the rules to follow B.the time of appearing
C.the material of puck D.the place for playing
27.What is the correct order of the events in ice hockey’s history?
    a. The rules of ice hockey were made.
    b. Ice hockey became an Olympic sport.
    c. The first league of ice hockey was set up.
    d. Ice hockey became the most popular ice sport.
    e. People played with frozen cow waste in the field.
    A.e-a-c-b-d B.e-c-d-a-b C.a-d-e-b-c D.a-c-b-d-e
28.Which of the following sentences is proper at the beginning of Paragraph 5?
A.Compared with other sports, all the members of the champion can get a ring.
B.Unlike other sports, the champion team can get one more cup each year.
C.Unlike other sports, a new cup for the champion isn’t created each year.
D.Compared with other sports, at most five names in all can be added to the cup.
29.The main purpose of the article is to ________.
A.explain the rules of ice hockey
B.show the materials of the ice hockey
C.tell us the championship of the ice hockey
D.introduce the development of the ice hockey

(2022·江苏常州·校考二模)Dr. Nate Lewis patiently adds a chemical to a machine in his laboratory. The chemical smells a little bit like rotten (变质的) fish. We know that because we have our noses to smell and know it. Dr. Lewis, however, wonders if his machine can smell the chemical, too. The machine is actually an electronic nose.
You might wonder why anyone would want to build an electronic nose. After all, if you want to smell something, you can just breathe in through your own nose. For example, it’s common for someone to smell a bottle of milk to check if it has gone bad. But imagine if a person had to smell the thousands of bottles of milk that farms produce every day-all that milk would go bad long before the testing was done! The food industry uses electronic noses every day to test the foods for freshness.
There are millions of different smells in the world. How can our nose tell the difference between all these smells? Scientists know there are cells in our noses that act as smell detectors (探测器). They think that a certain pattern of cells respond (回应) to every smell. Our nose creates a fingerprint for each smell using this pattern. Our brain understands all the odor (气味) fingerprints, Dr. Lewis’s electronic nose works like the human nose to detect odor fingerprints.
The biggest difference, however, between human noses and the electronic noses that have been built so far is the brain. We need our brains to explain each smell we meet. But the electronic nose can only identify the chemical makeup of a smell while our brain can decide whether something your nose smells is good or bad. “It doesn’t know which smells it likes and which is terrible because it can’t think.” explains Dr. Lewis.
Dr. Lewis is working on how to make the electronic nose get smarter. Maybe someday fridges with electronic noses will tell you when food has gone bad, or your locker room will use them to remind you to wash your sports clothes. There are many possible uses for a machine to take the place of the human nose. Every day scientists are getting closer to building a more perfect electronic nose.
33.What does the writer mean by saying the underlined sentence “all that milk would go bad long before the testing was done” in Paragraph 2?
A.It’s necessary to invent an electronic nose.
B.The test machine usually makes the milk go bad.
C.We don’t need to test the smell of the milk every day.
D.It takes electronic noses a long time to test the smell.
34.What can we know about Dr. Lewis’s electronic nose?
A.It must work together with human noses. B.It works like other electronic noses.
C.Its working process (过程) is similar to human noses. D.It can’t tell the rotten food at all.
35.Which of the following statement might the writer agree with?
A.Electronic noses will help us wash clothes.
B.Electronic noses will disappear sooner or later.
C.Electronic noses will be widely used in our daily life.
D.Electronic noses will completely take the place of human noses to tell the smell.

(2022·江苏常州·校考二模)On Dec.9, 2021, three Chinese astronauts gave a science lecture 400 kilometers above Earth. Zhai Zhigang, Wang Yaping and Ye Guangfu, who are working abroad the Tiangong space station, showed millions of students their life there. They also did some fun science experiments. Let’s take a look at some of them.
    Use it or lose it
The human body grows with the pull of Earth’s gravity. But in space, our bones and muscles (肌肉) don’t need to sustain our body’s weight. This will cause bone and muscle loss. NASA says that astronauts can lose up to 20 percent of their muscles after just a couple of weeks. That is dangerous because they will be too weak to work.
Astronauts have different ways to prevent this. During the lecture, Zhai introduced a special uniform Ye was wearing. It’s called a “penguin suit”. There are many elastic bands (弹力带) inside the suit. Wearing it, astronauts use their muscles to stretch the bands. This keeps their muscles strong.
    ________
During another experiment, Wang made a water film (膜). Then she added more water drops onto the film to make it a water ball. This can never happen on Earth. Why?
We need to first understand the surface tension (表面张力) of water. It is like a “skin” of water. The “skin”is there because water molecules (分子) are drawn to each other. Most of the time, gravity is too strong and it breaks the “skin”. But with zero gravity in space, the “skin” stays strong and the water ball will not break.
Water in space acts differently from water on Earth in other ways. For example, water will not flow downward if you try to pour it into a cup. That’s why astronauts usually drink water through straws in sealed bags.
36.What can we learn about the lecture from space?
A.It is a part of the astronauts’ daily work. B.It took place in the International Space Station.
C.It is one of the astronauts’ ways to ask for help. D.It took place 400 kilometers above Earth.
37.What does the underlined word “they” in the passage refer to?
    A.astronauts B.muscles C.bones D.bodies
38.Which of the following is the best to fill in“________”in the passage?
A.Space water is valuable B.Space water is different
C.Space water is important D.Space water is interesting
39.What’s the writer’s purpose in this passage?
A.To raise people’s interest in space exploration.

(2022·江苏常州·校考二模)I have tried to write a ghost story that won’t make you unhappy with yourselves, with each other, with seasons, or with me. I hope it haunts your houses pleasantly.
    Charles Dickens
One Christmas Eve, old Scrooge and Bob were working busily in his office. It was a cold, foggy day. The fog was so thick that the houses opposite were like ghosts. It was only three o’clock in the afternoon, but it was already quite dark.
“Merry Christmas, Uncle! God bless you!” cried a happy voice. It was Scrooge’s nephew (侄子).
“Bah!” said Scrooge. “Humbug (骗人的话)! ”
“Christmas is a humbug! Surely you don’t mean that, uncle.” said his nephew.
“I do.” said Scrooge “Merry Christmas! What reason have you got to be merry? You are poor.”
“OK, then,” replied the nephew cheerfully. “What reason have you got to be sad? You are rich. Don’t be angry, Uncle!” said his nephew.
“What else can I be?” answered the uncle. “I live in a world of fools! Merry Christmas! What’s Christmas time to you? It’s a time for paying bills without money. It’s time for finding yourself a year older, but not richer. Everyone who goes around saying “Merry Christmas” should have his tongue cut out. Yes, he should!”
“Uncle! Please don’t say that!” said the nephew. “I’ve always thought of Christmas time as a good time, a kind, and a charitable happy time. And so, Uncle Christmas has never put any gold or silver in my pocket, but I think it has done me good. And it will do me good. And I say, God bless it!”
Bob, standing in the corner of the room, applauded (鼓掌). He realized his mistake very soon, and went quickly back to his work, but Scrooge had heard him.
“One more sound from you. Bob Cratchit,” said Scrooge, “and you’ll celebrate Christmas by losing your job!”
“Don’t be angry with him, Uncle. Come and have dinner with us tomorrow.”
    “No.” said Scrooge.
“I’m sorry you don’t want to cerebrate Christmas. But I do. So a Merry Christmas, Uncle!”
    “Good afternoon!” said Scrooge.

Gong made a complaint and required the video company to return all the money. But “It’s in the air so far.” Gong told workers’ Daily.
This is not a single case in which children have paid a great deal of money to play online games. The Guangdong Consumer Council (消费者委员会) has received more than 10,000 similar complaints from local parents in the first three months of this year.
Because of the increasing number of similar cases, the council talked with many online game companies in the province, strongly suggesting that they should introduce useful methods to protect the consumer rights of children.
In fact, many online companies and mobile apps have provided a youth mode, announcing that parents can control the content and limit the time their children spend in using the apps.
However, according to the consumer survey report by the Jiangsu Consumer Council. Some of the protection modes of companies such as Huya, Douyu, Bilibili and Team Talk are far from useful.
For example users of all of the above companies can extend watching time by entering a password. Team Talk’s youth mode is no different from the usual mode, which means that children can watch all content. Wang Yihan, 16, from Fuzhou No. l High School, shared her experience. She said “Some apps would only send a notice to check whether the user is over 18 years old. The user can simply choose “Yes’ and star playing the game. It’s no good.”

(2022·江苏常州·校考二模)I have been a staff writer for the school newspaper, the Dagligtale, since my first day here at the University of Alberta. I probably won’t work as a journalist after my graduation, but this doesn’t mean my experience in student journalism has been useless. In fact, I have picked up many important skills through this job.
I still remember my first news story. It was about the victory of the school baseball team. I attended the celebration and was told to do some interviews. I was frightened. Journalism is a stressful field to work in, but I’m thankful that I have had the opportunity to try my hand at it. It has taught me to be a better storyteller, student and citizen. If you are ever given a chance to write for a campus newspaper or magazine, take it and learn everything you can!

(2022·江苏常州·校考二模)When visitors to the Palace Museum feel a need to sit down for a cup of tea or find a bathroom without a long line, they soon will be able to turn to their smart phones for the information they need.
This modern solution comes thanks to an agreement signed on Friday by the museum and Huawei Co., the telecommunication giant, to build a “smart network” using 5G technology. Under the agreement, 5G Wi-Fi signals will cover the Palace Museum, China’s royal palace from 1420 to 1911.
“It’s important to always stay close to the latest technology to better serve the public,” said Shan Jixiang, former director of the Palace Museum. Shan said there is still much room for improvement in the handling of a huge number of cultural relics, such as when the priceless painting “Along the River During the Qingming Festival” is exhibited again in the future. When it was last exhibited in 2015, visitors stood in long lines until 3 a.m. to have a look. The museum ended up preparing fast food to serve the hungry visitors. “I don’t want that scenario to happen again”, Shan said. “Our operation can be done in a more scientific way.”
The new system will also make use of the closed-cameras that are set up all over the Palace Museum to safeguard the museum’s precious relics. More than 1.86 million of them are housed at the museum, which recorded nearly 20 million visits from the public last year. “How can we make sure no single visitor who might have evil ideas threatens these treasures?” Shan said. “After adopting the Internet of Things, we can instantly (立即) detect any motion involving the relics to prevent such threats.”
The 5G network also will be used to improve remote meeting through webcams, which will discuss with scholars to jointly find the best answers for repair and store issues.

(2022·江苏扬州·校考二模)“Humans can develop certain abilities we aren't born with by practicing animals' movements,” the traditional Chinese Wushu lovers believed in the past — and still do today.
Chinese Five-Animal Exercises, also known as Wuqinxi, are the first complete set of qigong exercises following the movements of animals: monkeys, deer (鹿), birds, bears and tigers. They were created by one of the greatest doctors in Chinese history, Hua Tuo, more than 1, 800 years ago.
The Five-Animal Exercises are well-designed to help blood circulation (循环), and let the energy go smoothly in the body so as to improve the health.
“The bear movements are good for the stomach. The tiger movements can reduce the pain in the back. The deer movements help reduce the fat around the waist (腰). The bird movements can help keep our knees healthy and the monkey movements can be good for the heart.” said Hua Yi, the 59th inheritor (继承人) of Wuqinxi.
For those new learners, the first few exercises might not go well. You may find it hard to focus(集中注意力). Wear comfortable clothes, keep peaceful in your mind, try to move slowly... Little by little, you'll feel more and more harmonious with nature. You may even feel you become a tiger or a deer, walking in the forest freely.
These exercises need no tools and they are easy to learn. You can search online for the videos and practice them at any time when you feel like relaxing your body and mind. Because it's fun to practice and good for health, Five-Animal Exercises are becoming more and more popular in recent years, not only in China, but also in many other places of the world.

(2022·江苏扬州·校考二模)Since it was first published in 1843, the novella (短篇故事)A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens has been loved by millions of people, and perhaps has encouraged them to love more and give more. Dickens is known as the best author of the Victorian times writing on social issues influencing his times.
Charles was no strangers to poverty. His father had been thrown in prison for debt in 1824, and he had to drop school and start working as the second oldest child of eight children. ①
All his hopes and dreams of making something of his life were ended. It seemed not an adult in the world cared for his hopes or his abilities, not even his own parents. He wondered “how he could be so easily thrown away at such a young age”. ②
Eventually, he started writing stories for the papers. With money coming in and then children,Charles had taken a mortgage(抵押贷款)on a big house. His next novel was not as well received and his future payments were cut. Charles needed to make money and he needed to make it fast. Criticism (批评)of his new novel hurt his confidence; it is not easy to write when you are down and struggling. He needed new ideas and inspiration(激励), but he was running out of time.③
As he walked the streets after dark, through what he called the “black streets”of London, he again saw the poor ,who had little food or warmth in the cold weather, and the closed-up houses, like the doors of the hearts of many who do not want to love and give.④
He happened to find the idea of a Christmas story that could show this and warm the hearts of the poor and open the hearts of the selfish. He needed to write fast and that is probably why we only have a novella, but a novella was enough to share his story. He filled the story with character and scenes which he had already written about in his other stories, Scrooge, the main character,is a selfish self-centred man who hates Christmas the tine of giving . His late business partner, also a greedy man, comes back from the dead as a ghost to warn Scrooge. You will need to read the story yourself to see how Scrooge finally changes his ways.
The plan to save himself financially also saved Dickens emotionally. As he wrote about Christmas and the wonderful time of gift giving, family gathering, carol singing and feast sharing, his own heart was cheered and he remembered those things that really mattered to him. He loved writing the book and produced a special story, which is still loved around the world. New inspiration and fresh confidence set Dickens on a new path to success.

(2022·江苏无锡·校考二模)Are you the person sitting in the corner of the classroom during the break time hoping no one will come up and talk to you? If this sounds like you, you are not alone. If you want to become more socially confident follow the advice.
Accept your personality. Many people happen to be introverted, meaning that you’re more comfortable spending time alone. If this sounds like you, don’t force yourself to completely become an outgoing, social person. Doing so can lead to stress, worry, and even heart disease. Instead, spend time in social situations you already enjoy and try to have meaningful conversations. By accepting your introverted nature, you can focus on the quality of your social communications.
Understand the importance of confidence. You can become socially confident by attracting other people in a way that interests them and makes them feel heard. These skills are known as social ability. Practicing social ability can create chances for yourself to get close to others.
Avoid negative (消极的) thoughts. If you don’t see yourself as socially confident, it can be easy to look for things that confirms your thoughts. Catch yourself thinking negative thoughts, and ask yourself what you see or hear can prove the thought. (2022·江苏无锡·校考二模)I know I’m not an ordinary (普通的) ten-year-old kid. I mean, sure, I do ordinary thing. I eat ice cream. I ride my bike. I play ball. I play video games. Things like that make me ordinary, I guess. Also, I feel ordinary inside. But I know ordinary kids don’t make other ordinary kids run away screaming in playgrounds. I know ordinary kids don’t get stared at (盯着) wherever they go.
If I found a magic lamp and I could have one wish, I would wish that I had a common face that no one ever noticed at all. I would wish that I could walk down the street without people seeing me and then doing that look-away thing.
But I’m kind of used to how I look by now. I know how to pretend (假装) I don’t see the faces people make when they see me. We’ve all gotten pretty good at that kind of thing: Mom and Dad my elder sister Via, and me. Actually, I should take that hack: Via is not so good at it. She can get really angry when people do something rude to me. Like, for example, one time in the playground, some older kids saw me and made some noises. I don’t even know what the noises were exactly because I didn’t hear them myself, but Via heard them and she just started shouting at those kids. That’s the way she is. I’m not that way.
Via doesn’t see me as ordinary. She says she does, but I know that if I were ordinary, she wouldn’t feel like she needs to protect me that much. Mom and Dad don’t see me as ordinary, either. They see me as special. I think the only person in the world who realizes how ordinary I am is me.
My name is August, by the way. I won’t describe what I look like to you. Whatever you’re thinking, it’s probably worse.
79.Why does August think he is not ordinary from Paragraph 1?
A.Because he eats ice cream just like other children.
B.Because he likes riding a bike on his way home.
C.Because he often plays video games at school.
D.Because he makes other kids run away screaming.
80.What kind of person do you think Via is according to the passage?
A.Via is rude and often shouts to others. B.Via is kind and loves her brother very much.
C.Via is impatient and always gets angry easily. D.Via is silly and not good at getting on with others.
81.What can we infer from the underlined sentence in the last paragraph?
A.No one knows what August looks like. B.August is not good at describing things.
C.August is a shy boy and likes staying alone. D.August may have a very special appearance.

(2022·江苏无锡·校考二模)Today, our children spend more and more time online. Many children spend a lot of their free time playing games on the Internet, on video game systems or on their mobile phones. In the UK, 99% of teen kids aged 8 to 15 play video games every week, and children as young as five play video games regularly (有规律地). This information tells that the advantages and dangers of video games must be carefully considered.
For many people, ________ They have bright lights, funny cartoons and exciting stories. Video games also make you think in a creative way and you have to move your hands and eyes quickly. This can improve the way that a child’s brain works. Video games also make children use their imagination (想象力). The player has to do many creative things, like drawing and building things. Video games are also a good way to teach children about technology because they can learn how computers and other devices (设备) work while they play.
However, a recent study suggests that video games can also be bad for children. First, children can download (下载) many games for free. They don’t need money, so they don’t need to ask their parents if they can download the games. This means that parents often don’t know if their children are playing violent (暴力的) or scary games. Second, many children spend too much time playing games on computers, smartphones and iPads and this can lead to health problems – children who spend too much time on the computer and don’t exercise can become overweight. Third, if children spend too much time playing games instead of doing homework, they can have problems at school and get bad grades. Finally, video games can affect children’s social skills, they might not learn how to play with their friends.
In conclusion, it seems clear that video games have some advantages and disadvantages. On the one hand, they are fun and educational. (2022·江苏淮安·校考二模)With low temperatures and little food, winter is a hard season for animals. Many animals enter hibernation(冬眠)to get through it.
① During hibernation, animals hide away from hunters. Their metabolism(新陈代谢)will slow to less than a quarter of its normal speed. This cools its body and slows its heartbeat.
② Human hibernation doesn’t exist(存在)for many reasons. Our body is not designed for hibernation. For example, waste management is a huge challenge for human hibernation. Animals are able to stop their urination(排尿)and defecation(排便)during hibernation. However, humans can’t do this.
③ In fact, humans don’t need to sleep through the winter. We have discovered fire, clothes, shelter, hunting and agriculture. All these can help us survive the cold.

My name is Sara. When I was little, I played the drums. I also had a guitar. In fourth grade, I started playing the trombone(长号). I practice about four hours a week. All of this might not seem like a big deal for many kids, but there’s something about me that makes me a bit different from others. I was born without hands. Since I was about one year old, I’ve worm prosthetics (假肢).
This year, I got an invitation to join the high school marching band(行进管乐队). I told my mom I wanted to do it. But I had a teacher who thought I would not be able to march in the band—not because it was a high school band and I was only in seventh grade, but probably because my body was different. All I wanted was to show that I could do it, so I joined the band. And it paid off!
Music gives me energy. That happens sometimes. One time I was so down, and I didn’t even want to get out of bed. Then I hit my MP3 player by accident. A song came on, and I got up and started dancing. It helped me say to myself, “OK, I can get through today.”
Around my musician friends, we all share the same problems, like working out how many beats there are in a measure(小节). I have a hard time counting the beats, but so do a lot of the other kids. It’s a normal problem that we musicians share. When I’m with the band, I don’t feel as different as I do in other situations. It’s just another way that music makes me want to go on, and not to just sit down by myself and not care about life.
104.In what way is Sara different from other kids? ________
A.There’s something wrong with her body.
B.She knows how to play many instruments.
C.She learned to play the drums at a very early age.
D.It took her less time to practicing the trombone.
105.When she was invited to join the marching band, Sara ________.
A.refused the invitation at first B.followed the teacher’s advice
C.did not know how to do it D.believed that she would make it
106.How does Sara probably feel when she’s with the band? ________
    A.Relaxed. B.Nervous. C.Successful. D.Bored.
107.What would be the bet title for the text? ________.
A.A High School Band B.A Young Drummer
C.My Love for Music D.My Magic Hands

The next day my father said, "Huck, go to the river and catch some fish for breakfast. Quickly! And don't try anything. Remember, I'm watching you!"
While I was fishing by the river, I saw an empty boat nearby.
"A boat!" I thought happily, “This is my chance to escape. I'll hide the boat near some trees and use it tonight!"
When my father went to town that afternoon, I got my saw and started to work on the hole. It was late afternoon when I finished making the hole.
"I did a good job," I thought, looking at the hole. “Now I'll get my father's gun.”
I looked outside the window and there was nobody there. I quickly escaped through the hole. Then I ran into the woods to hunt a wild pig. Luckily, I found one. I shot it and took it back to the house and let the pig's blood fall on the wooden floor of the house. Then I pulled some of my hair out and put it on my father's axe(斧子) with some of the pig's blood. I took the pig's body outside and put it in a big bag with some rocks, and threw it into the river.
"This way people will think ▲ !" I thought. "They'll come and look for my body in the river." This idea made me smile.

(2022·江苏扬州·校考二模)It might be fun to use your smartphone, but be careful. Too much screen time may be harmful to your health.
First, it is bad for your eyes. A researcher called Sarah Hinkley says the problem comes from the blue light that the screen gives out. Looking at a smartphone for a long time can cause eye strain (劳损), headaches and dry eyes. So it is a good idea to take a break every 15 minutes when you are working at a computer or using a smartphone.
Second, screen use can do harm to children’s brains. A new study shows that using screens too much can affect how children’s brains grow. If children use screens for more than one hour a day, they might have lower levers of white matter in their brains. White matter is the key to the development of language and reading skills. So it is wise to cut down the time of children using all kinds of screens.
Third, using screens too much will affect your sleep. According to a study, about 95% of the people between the age of 13 and 64 use electronics before bed, especially the young people under 20. Doctors say that the light from those electronics at night may make you excited before you go to bed. Then it’s hard for you to get enough sleep. So you’d better turn off smartphones, TVs, and all other screens an hour before your bedtime.
