(2022·江苏泰州·校考二模)Picture the scene: It’s midnight. You’re very hungry after studying for a long time. Then you see a nice pie in the fridge. Do you eat it? It seems that you shouldn’t, for many reasons, including its influence on your studies.
Scientists have long known that eating late at night can make us gain weight. But now a new study has shown that late-night eating can also have a bad influence on our brains — it might hurt our ability to learn new things and store memories.
“We believe that late-night eating may affect (影响) our learning by affecting the parts of the brain that control learning and memory,” Dawn Loh, PhD, a project scientist at the University of California, Los Angeles, said, “We believe the timing of when we eat is the main cause of the damaged (受损的) memory.”
For the study, the researchers looked at mice with strict feeding plans. For two weeks, the mice were either allowed to eat during the time when they are usually the most active, or during the time when they usually sleep. The mice received the same amount(数量) of sleep and calories.
Then the researchers tested the brains of the mice. In one test, the researchers tried to find out whether the mice could remember that a room was connected to an electric shock(电击) after 24 hours had gone by.
The researchers noticed that, when the mice were put in the room again, those mice that ate when they should have been sleeping were less likely(可能的) to get scared than those mice that ate during usual hours. It means that they didn’t remember.
So think twice before the midnight snack — it might be bad for more than your weight.

I lived, up to the time of the illness that took away my sight and hearing, in a tiny house made up of a large square room and a small one. My father built such a house when he married my mother. It was completely covered with climbing roses, vines and honeysuckles. It was the favourite place of humming-birds and bees. It was called "Ivy Green" because the house and the trees and fences were covered with beautiful English ivy. Its old-fashioned garden was the paradise (乐园) of my childhood.
These happy days did not last long. One brief spring with wonderful songs, one summer rich in fruit and roses, one auturnn of gold and red flowers, all left their gifts at the feet of a cheerful child. Then, in the cold month of an early spring, came the illness which closed my eyes and ears. It hurt my stomach and brain terribly, and the doctor thought I could not live on. Early one morning, however, the fever left me as suddenly as it had come. There was great joy in the family that morning, but no one, not even the doctor, knew that I should never see or hear again.
I cannot remember what happened during the first months after my illness. I only know that I sat on my mother's legs or touched her dress as she went about her housework. Soon I felt the need of some communication with others and began to make simple signs. A shake of the head meant "No" and a nod, "Yes", a pull meant "Come" and a push, "Go". Indeed, I was thankful to her loving wisdom all that was bright and good in my long night. Slowly, I got used to the silence and darkness around me and forgot that it had ever been different, until she came —my teacher — who was to set my spirit free.
But during the first nineteen months of my life, I had caught glimpses (一瞥) of broad, green fields, a bright sky, trees and flowers which the darkness that followed could not totally be swept out.

Is advertisement really necessary? Billions of dollars are spent on it every year, so it must be important. After all, it is a busy world. You have to advertise to get people’s attention to sell products!
Not every company thinks that way, however. The NO-AD company doesn’t advertise in traditional ways. It sells its products by word of mouth. In this way, they can save money and keep costs down, which makes their products cheaper for customers.
“Word-of-mouth advertising” happens when one person tells another about a good experience with a product or service. That next person then tells another friend, family member, or colleague(同事). And so a chain of information is created.
Usually, advertisers talk about how good their product is. Although they say things like, “Studies show that our product is the best.” or “Everyone loves this product.” It can sound unconvincing. It’s much more believable to hear about a product from a family member or a friend who has used it and liked it. Our loved ones’ ideas are very important to us, so we often listen to their advice about a product.
Word-of-mouth advertising has other advantages, too. It’s cost-effective(有效的) (after all, it’s free) and a company doesn’t have to create a complex(复杂的) business plan to do it. Here is some advice for small businesses about word-of-mouth advertising.
Be prepared to talk about your company at any time. You never know who you will meet. Always carry business cards.
Only say good things about your company. Don’t say bad things about your competition. Help other companies by recommending people to them. The more you help others, the more good luck will come back to you…and that is good business.
14.Why do some companies spend lots of money on advertisements?
A.To make the environment beautiful. B.To attract people to buy their products.
C.To make their products very useful. D.To tell people the names of their companies.
15.In the picture, by saying, “I always buy it…”, the speaker probably means to ________.
A.buy the product for her colleague B.recommend the product to her friend
C.sell the product to her relative D.tell her customer about the service

A.Unimportant. B.Uncomfortable. C.Unusual. D.Unbelievable.
17.What might NO-AD companies do according to the passage?
A.Say bad things about other companies. B.Improve their products and service all the time.
C.Help other companies by wishing them good luck. D.Create complex business plans.

A.to make us believe there is no need to make advertisements
B.to tell us to care more about advertisements
C.to introduce some information about NO-AD
D.to show us how to sell products by advertising on TV

(2022·江苏扬州·统考二模)Grandpa moved in with us after Grandma passed away. He came to Canada from China, where he was a well-respected school headmaster.
I, a nine-year-old boy, never spoke much Chinese. Grandpa didn’t speak much English, but we still connected in our own way.
One way we developed our relationship was over a game of Monopoly. He didn’t really understand the rules or much of what my little brother and I said; I don’t think it mattered. He laughed when he landed on our hotels. Or when he pulled a card that read: “GO TO JAIL.” He got a kick to make us happy.
I think of Grandpa when I play the trading card game Yu-Gi-Oh! with my sons. I can’t keep track of all the spells and effects in this game.
Truthfully, I don’t care if I win or lose these games. What matters is spending time with my children and making an effort to understand their interests.
I often think about my kids. At how excitedly they explain rules and how they go easy on their old man. I imagine it’s like how Grandpa felt playing Monopoly with us.
Grandpa went for regular walks. He also spent his days sitting on the couch, looking out of the window and singing quietly. I often thought he was bored. But as I age, I find peace in taking moments to look out of a window. Maybe I got that from him.
What I learned from my grandfather was to enjoy simple pleasures in life. To see the beauty in the colors of the rainbow. To see a single leaf fall from a tree. To play Yu-Gi-Oh! with my sons.

Seeing that there were many others like herself in trouble from the outbreak, Akinpe and her two roommates, Michele Gomez and Maureen Lee, brainstormed ideas for how to help their local community. They came up with a street pantry(储藏柜). Gomez said the idea was very simple, “Take what you need and leave what you can.”
With the help of Gomez’s father, they built the Blessing Box – a street pantry, with shelves and hanging baskets and two doors made from old furniture.
It sits just at the back of the three girls’ home, so they can look after it. They put some information notices into their neighbors’ mailboxes, and the Blessing Box was quickly filled with the donations (捐赠)from the community, “It is the community’s strong support that keeps the project alive,” Akinpe said.
We now have hundreds of people visiting our box every day. It might only a hours for the box to be full and next hour it might become empty again. “We are now helping others to carry out similar projects in their own communities, too”, Gomez said.
Lee said things in the box were mostly convenience foods, as well as some necessary life things such as spaghetti and toilet paper. “Few people take everything at once. They think there are other people who need them more.” Lee added.

(2022·江苏扬州·统考二模)Do you ever get the feeling that you’re being watched? Well, you might be right.
According to a study published in Nature on June 23, astronomers(天文学家) have found that 1,715 stars have had a direct view of Earth since humans were here.
In order to do this, scientists used a method that looked for life on other planets. But instead, they changed the method so it could try to decide what places could see us.
The team looked at 331,312 stars within 326 light-years of Earth. Out of all those stars, only 1,715 of them could see Earth within the last 5,000 years, with an extra 319 stars that will be able to see us in the next 5,000 years.
“When I look up at the sky, it looks a little bit friendlier because it’s like, maybe somebody is waving,” said Lisa Kaltenegger, director of the Carl Sagan Institute at Cornell University, US, and the study’s lead writer.
If a planet circling around one of those 1,715 stars is home to advanced life, they could easily see that there is life here because of the oxygen on Earth. If that didn’t give it away, then the radio waves we have sent out into space would also be an indicator. In fact, human-made radio waves have already travelled through 75 of the closest stars on Kaltenegger’s list.
Why haven’t we heard from anyone yet, then?
It takes a long time for messages to travel between star systems. By the time a message could be received, that advanced life would probably not exist anymore.
Alan Boss, a scientist at the Carnegie Institution for Science in the US who wasn’t part of the study, wrote in an email that this long time would limit the chances for different life to exchange “emails and TikTok videos”.
“So we should not expect aliens to show up anytime soon,” Boss said.

A.Advanced life. B.The oxygen on Earth. C.Human-made radio waves. D.A planet circling around one of those 1,715 stars.
32.What could prevent humans from exchanging messages with aliens according to Boss?
A.Aliens don’t exist. B.They cannot understand each other.
C.Human-made radio waves cannot travel far. D.It takes a long time for messages to travel.
33.What is the purpose of the text?
A.To raise reader’s interest in Aliens. B.To present new findings published in a study.
C.To discuss if there is advanced life on other stars. D.To explain how messages travel between different star systems.

(2022·江苏·统考二模)Sun Ruifeng, a mother in Beijing, changed some of her plans for her 8-year-old son’s summer vacation. She looked for an English tutoring (辅导) course, but in the end, she changed it to a swimming training class.
Sun’s choice is part of the result of the government’s growing efforts to reduce the academic pressure (学业压力) on young students.
On July 24, 2021, Chinese government introduced a guideline to reduce the academic pressure on primary and junior high school students. It lists requirements in areas such as reducing the amount and the difficulty of homework and improving the quality of education and after-class services provided by schools.
For example, homework for children below the third grade is not allowed, while homework for junior high school students should take no longer than 90 minutes to finish.
According to the guideline, tutoring institutions (机构) cannot teach students content that students haven’t learnt at school. No tutoring courses can be taught on weekends, national holidays or during winter and summer vacations.
The moves aim to guide the educational training industry to focus on improving students’ all-round quality, Chen Xianzhe, a professor at South China Normal University, told Xinhua.
According to Global Times, more than 75 percent of Chinese children who live in cities, from grade 1 to grade 12, take part in tutoring programs.
This has led to many social problems such as students’ falling levels of physical fitness, more mental health problems and huge family costs, said Chu Zhaohui, a senior researcher with the National Institute of Education Sciences.
Many parents showed their support for the new moves. However, there are also some worries. A parent from Shanxi said that although she agreed with the new moves, she worried about what her son would do after school if both parents have no time to be with him.

(2022·江苏·统考二模)“I really want to, but I can’t because...”
It hurts every time I hear someone say it. I see it for what it is—an excuse. Every one of us has hopes, dreams and goals. We talk about how we will achieve them, but when it’s time to do them, we use that sentence. During my teen years, I felt stuck. I wanted to learn so many things and achieve my wildest dreams, yet I couldn’t. Living in an underdeveloped country, we are in great need of water, electricity, and opportunities (机遇).
One day, I had had enough. I decided to use the resources I had to create the future I dreamed of. I made up my mind to get the Japanese Monbusho Scholarship. I found articles and books online to study Japanese. In a few months, I was able to hold a simple conversation in Japanese.
I realized that I would need money. I set out to build a hedgehog (刺猬) care website. Every day, after school, I would research hedgehogs and write detailed articles about them. I studied Japanese and wrote about hedgehogs for three years.
I’m sure you’re expecting a perfect ending where I travel to Japan. That’s not how this story ends. The fact is, I didn’t even get the chance to apply for the scholarship. I failed. Unwilling to accept the facts, I started an online university the next year. And the hedgehog website made me a total of $60.
I can tell you that I tried, but it didn’t work out. It did—just not the way I expected.
I’m not in Japan, but I know how to speak Japanese and have met many interesting people along the way. My hedgehog website didn’t succeed, but I created a new one, that’s even better with the experience I gained.
I didn’t let my difficulties stand in my way, and I created my own opportunities. Anyone can accept the cards they’ve been dealt (发牌) and create their own way to make them into a winning hand.
42.According to Paragraph 2, what does “that sentence” refer to (指的是) ________.

Making velvet flowers (绒花) was an endangered folk art, but it’s now kept alive with more young craftsmen devoting themselves to the art. Murong Yi, 21, a senior studying at a university in Beijing, is one of them.
Recently, she posted her video about how to make velvet flower head-wear shaped like a golden phoenix on Sina Weibo. The artwork was made of 4,000 pieces of cocoon fiber (蚕丝) in 12 days. Generally, it only takes two to three days to make a velvet flower. The video has received over 2.4 million views on Bilibili.
Velvet flowers are called ronghua in Chinese, it means great wealth. It was a popular decoration in festivals and weddings, but few people know about it now. ________ “I started to learn about it five or six years ago from some ancient Chinese costurne historical dramas,” she said. She tried to learn from others but couldn’t find many online tutorial videos. Finally, she watched a one-hour TV program, in which an inheritor (继承人) showed how to make velvet flowers in detail.
Then, there was the problem of buying materials. Velvet flowers are made of silk and copper wires (铜线). “However, it was difficult to buy these materials at that time,” Murong said.
Another key step is to choose copper wires in the proper size and type. “The hardness really do matter,” she said. “Even 1-millimeter would lead to a different shape.” Without much experience, she had to learn from failures and tried again.
New ideas naturally came up when Murong grew as a skilled creator. She found a way to have ready-made fiber produced in a factory, which helped make the handicraft much easier. Now, people interested in this craft can simply buy the material from her Taobao store.
“By doing this, I hope it will help those who want to try ronghua,” Murong said. As a lover of Chinese traditional culture, she said “I’ll learn more about different handicrafts and help make them popular among young people by social media.”

(2022·江苏连云港·统考二模)When was the last time you read a book, or a long magazine article? If you’re one of the people who don’t make a habit of reading regularly, you might be missing out. Reading is a good habit for the following reasons.
First, reading books is fun. It keeps you in a good mood if you like reading. It is especially useful in bad weather or after a busy day at school. When you lose yourself in a great book, the bad mood just goes away.
But the benefits of reading can go far beyond a relaxing pastime. You can learn knowledge and information through reading. Everything you read fills your head with new bits of knowledge. The more knowledge you have, the more able you become to fight with difficulties. For example, you will find that the schoolwork becomes much easier after your reading improves. Reading can be the best teacher and there is no better way to get so much useful information. Even if you lose everything you once had, the knowledge in the brain will still be there.
Moreover, reading makes a great difference to writing abilities. Musicians learn from one another and painters use painting tools created by masters before them. This works in the same way for people who are good at writing. As you have read many well-written works in different styles, your own writing abilities turn from good to better.
You can never stop learning and growing. And the best way is reading.

(2022·江苏连云港·统考二模)The gray cub (幼狼) was different from his brothers and sisters. They already had the reddish color of their mother’s fur. But he was gray, like his father—One Eye.
At first, his life was drinking milk, resting with his mother and playing with his brothers and sisters. But then came hard times when the cub was hungry. One Eye found it more and more difficult to find food. The cub’s brothers and sisters died of hunger. Then his father died. A lynx, a dangerous animal, killed him. After that, his mother had to go out hunting in another part of the forest.
One day, while his mother was out hunting, the gray cub found the way out of the cave. At first, it was too bright for him. But slowly he learned to focus on the trees, the other bank of the stream and the sky.
He was afraid. But he needed to know and understand was greater than his fear, so he went out. He soon discovered that the floor of the world was not flat like the floor of the cave. And he fell, rolling down the slope (斜坡) outside the cave. He lay at the bottom crying in fear.
But he soon sat up, and he started walking and looking around him. He met a squirrel, and a sparrow, both of which moved away from him. And so he learned that the world had things that stayed in one place, and other things that moved. And the more he walked, the better he walked.

When we talk about drones, we may think of gathering information or making fantastic videos. These eyes in the sky can also help farmers. Growers closely watch their crops, find pests(害虫) and make sure that water is being used properly. Drones can also help humans do lots of physical work Powered by China’s Beidou Navigation Satellite System the drones can spread seeds fertilizer(化肥) faster and better than humans
The driverless car is an exciting new technology. The same technology can help farmers plant cut and gather crops! Smart Ag, a US company, produces driverless tractors. Now driverless tractors can work in fields day and night. They have sensors, radar and GPS. Pulling a grain cart the tractor can automatically harvest grain from a machine, and then send the cart to be unloaded(卸货). According to technology officer Mark Barglof, it won’t run over people or run into other equipment or crops.
One of the most important jobs of a farmer is to make sure that plants get water. A new smartphone app called Smart Irrigation can help.
Developed by an agricultural scientist at the University of Georgia, US, the app uses GPS technology to tell farmers when to water their crops. (2022·江苏常州·统考二模)After taking a risk by dropping out of school at the age of 16, two decades later, Yang Lan has lived a comfortable life by playing, teaching and making guqin.
When Yang Lan first became interested in guqin, he was 16 and he didn’t really know much about it.
It was 2003 and a poetic(充满诗情画意的) scene in a film attracted him. Guqin has existed(存在)for over 3,000 years. In the same year that Yang developed an interest in it, guqin music was seen as an intangible heritage(非物质文化遗产)of humanity by UNESCO.
Yang got to know stories related to the instrument. The boy was further attracted by the cultural connotations(内涵)of the ancient instrument, though he admits the attraction is more about imagination, instead of the instrument itself. But the imagination really built a relationship between him and guqin. After years of exploration, he finally makes a living by playing and making guqin, and he has just published a book about his experience with the instrument.
At 16, shortly after his epiphany(顿悟), Yang decided to drop out of school and pursue a music career. He told his parents he would go to Beijing and become a rock musician. But, actually he wanted to move to Shaolin Temple to learn guqin.
His parents tried to prevent him quitting school, but they failed. In the auturnn of the year, Yang left home.
“You don’t consider the results of your decisions at 16. I was simply attracted by something and drawn to start a journey to find it.” says Yang.
After nearly 20 years, Yang, now 35, says he does not regret his choice as he has satisfied with his current life, but, sometimes, he feels curious about how his life would have turned out if he had taken another path.

(2022·江苏常州·统考二模)“What a quiet, gentle pussy angel it is,” Norah spoke.
“No,” said Willie, “I saw her catch a bird in the garden today. She was fierce and angry then. She tore it to pieces and ate it, after she had killed it.”
“What makes her so cruel sometimes?” asked Norah. “Can’t we teach her better, mother?”
“No,” said Fred. “We can’t, she kills and eats other animals because she was made for it, and meant for it. Let me tell you something I’ve learnt about it at school. Shall I, Norah?”
“Do, please,” said her sister.
“Then take puss on your lap (大腿上), Norah, and we’ll begin,” said he. “First look at her eyes. Now look into my eyes. You see that round black spot in the middle of my eye? That is the pupil (瞳孔) of the eye. Light enters the eye through the pupil. In the bright light it is a long narrow slit (狭缝), when it is dark the pupil opens into a very wide round window.”
“I suppose,” said Norah, “that is to help her to see when it is dark.”
“It is,” said Fred. “Look at her now while she is stretching herself. What a wide mouth she has and what long sharp teeth. Four of the teeth, two in each jaw, are much larger and stronger than the rest. Teacher says that they are meant for seizing and tearing the mice and birds. We move our jaw from seizing and tearing the mice to birds. We move our jaw from side to side, as well as up and down, when we chew our food. The cat’s jaw cannot do it, it moves only up and down. Her jaws as well as her teeth are meant for cutting, not for chewing.”
“How amazing!” Norah laughed.
“Moreover, a cat’s tongue is not smooth, like our tongue. It is set with small, sharp, horny points which stretch backwards. The cat uses her rough tongue to strip the flesh from the bones.”
“Now, one more look at her feet. If we took the cat up when she was angry, we should see that each toe (趾头) is armed with a strong, pointed claw. We don’t see them now; she keeps them in a sheath. She only stretches them out when she is angry.” said Fred.
73.What is possibly “the pussy angel” in the passage?
A.Norah’s friend. B.Norah’s toy. C.Norah’s pet. D.Norah’s family.

“Don’t worry, Alice,” said the officer. “The Indian is called Magua, an army runner. He’s going to guide us to reach the destination before the soldiers.”
“Do you trust him, Heyward?” asked Alice.
“I do,” said the officer. “He used to fight with the Mohawks and once he was an enemy of your father, but that was a long time ago. Now he is our friend.”
“Does Magua speak English?” said Alice. “Can you ask him to say anything?”
Heyward laughed. He pretends he doesn’t know any English. He only speaks it if he has to.
Just then the Indian stopped and pointed to a dark path through the bushes. There was only space for one horse to pass.
“Maybe we should travel with the soldiers,” said Alice. “I don’t feel safe with Magua”
“Just because he has some different manners from us and his skin is dark, it doesn’t mean we should distrust him,” said the dark-haired woman. Alice did not reply to her sister. She rode her horse through the bushes and followed Magua down the dark path between threes.
The riders(骑马的人) continued through the forest. “The servants(仆人) must leave us now and change the direction,” said Magua. “Then it will be more difficult for Montclam’s Indians to follow our tracks(踪迹).”
Heyward told the servants to ride in the direction of the soldiers. Then he and the two sisters rode on. Magua ran in front of them. Suddenly they heard the sound of the horses’ hoofs. The riders held their breath and waited in the bushes to see who was following them. A tall thin man in a blue coat rode into view.
“Who are you?” asked Heyward.
“My name is David Gamut. I am a preacher and I sing hymns,” said the man.
Alice was happy when she heard this. “Please let him travel with us and we will sing together, Heyward.”

(2022·江苏无锡·统考二模)What will life on Earth be like in 2050? How different are things going to be? Some scientists offer their predictions (预测).
Transportation will look very different in years to come. “We’ve already seen how driverless technology is picking up,” says Chris Riddell, a famous futurist. Well before 2050, he predicts roads in many big cities will be filled with self-driving cars. People who want to drive themselves will have to pay extra money for pleasure. What will happen after that? Riddell predicts people will be taken to the skies. Personal drones (无人驾驶飞机) will have been a thing by the year 2050. Dubai has planned to use drone taxis to transport people around the city in the future.
Among all new technologies, artificial intelligence (AI) will change our lives the most greatly, says Riddell. The goal is to build artificial intelligence into computers. These computers can learn to act like humans. But because of their artificial “ 29 ”, they can learn more at a faster speed. “In the year 2050, you won’t just have humans at the top of businesses,” says Riddell. “Company bosses will likely work alongside computing systems.”
By 2050, there will have been more people living on Earth. A growing population will add stress to the environment. Ian Lowe is a retired professor of science. He warns that we need to replace fossil fuels (化石燃料) with clean energy. Otherwise, we will likely see more natural disasters. “We are ruining the environment at a great speed,” Lowe says. “We simply don’t know what the long-term effects of that will be.” We must act now, Lowe adds. What happens in the future will be the result of our decisions and actions today.

(2022·江苏无锡·统考二模)“Wanted: Violin. Can’t pay much. Call…”
Why did I notice that? I wondered, since I seldom look at such ads.
I put the paper on my lap and closed my eyes, remembering what had happened many years before, when my family struggled to make a living on our farm. I, too, had wanted a violin, but we didn’t have the money.
When my arms grew long enough, how I wanted one! But I knew it was out of the question.
It was not a good year. At harvest the crops did not bring as much as we had hoped. Yet even though times were hard, I couldn’t wait any longer to ask, “Daddy, may I have a violin of my own?”
Daddy looked sad. That night, and many following nights, I heard him remind God in our family devotions, “…and Lord, Mary wants her own violin.”
One evening we all sat around the table. Daddy wrote a letter to his friend, Mr. Finkle, a fine violinist.
When Daddy received a letter from Columbus a few weeks later, he announced, “We’ll be driving to Columbus.”
The day finally arrived. After we got there, Mr. Finkle, a tall man, older than Daddy, opened the door. “Come in!” he and Daddy heartily shook hands, both talking at once.
He picked up a case, opened it, lifted out a violin and started to play.
“Carl, I found it in a pawn shop for seven dollars. It’s a good violin. Mary should be able to make beautiful music with it.” Then he handed the violin to me.
I noticed the tears in Daddy’s eyes as I finally comprehended. It was mine! I stoked the violin gently. “It’s beautiful.” I said, barely breathing.
When I was ready to join the school orchestra (管弦乐队) , I trembled with excitement. I sat in the third row of violins and wore my white orchestra jacket like a royal robe. My heart beat wildly at my first public performance, a school operetta. I felt sure everyone in the audience was watching me. Daddy and Mother smiled proudly at their little girl. And soon I found myself in the first-violin chair.
I thought of Daddy, who did all he could to fill my needs and desires when I was a little girl. I wonder if I had ever thanked him.
At last I picked up the newspaper, walked to the phone and dialed the number. Later in the day, a man in his 30s knocked on the door. “My daughter wants a violin so badly,” he said, “How much are you asking?” Any music store, I knew, would offer me a nice sum. But now I heard my voice answer, “Seven dollars.”

A.Mary passed her love to others in the way Mr. Finkle did.
B.Mary never said thanks to his father who had passed away.
C.The young man’s family had no money to pay for the violin.
D.Mary knew why her father took her to Columbus before going.
(2022·江苏无锡·统考二模)Chinese rose plants lining the roads always are a welcome sight for Ye Jiaxing, 32, when she returns from a business trip and takes a taxi home from Beijing Capital International Airport. Like many Beijing natives, Ye feels deeply connected to the city, wherever she is, and the roses in full bloom (开花) always make her feel less tired and remind her that she has arrived home.
Praise from poets
Growing of the roses in China can be traced back about 2,000 years. Before they were grown, the wild roses only bloomed once a year. As more and more people were attracted by the roses, they started growing. The roses can flower for more than 200 days a year. Well-known poets during the Tang Dynasty produced many works to praise the lengthy flowering period of the Chinese rose.
During the Yuan Dynasty, specialized flower businesses began appearing in some towns to supply Chinese roses to the palaces. Empress Josephine, the first wife of Napoleon Bonaparte, loved roses and collected varieties from all over the world. Many people in Europe love the flowers, especially as they bloom for most of the year.
Research efforts
Last year alone, more than 50 million Chinese rose plants from over 2,500 varieties were growing in Beijing’s streets, gardens and parks. The Chinese rose usually blooms three to four times every year after the Spring Festival, each lasting about 10 days, providing a perfect chance for people to fully appreciate (欣赏) them until October. In China, Beijing is the best place to plant Chinese roses. The city’s mainly dry weather and low rainfall make pest control easier. Some diseases, such as black rot, which is usually seen in southern China, are also prevented by these weather conditions. After hundreds of experiments, we knew that climbing roses were the best choice to plant along ring roads in Beijing.
35
In the past 20 years, some people have known the economic value of the flowers and started to take up growing new types. Growing a new type of the Chinese rose is not easy. People need to cross-pollinate (授粉) at least 10,000 plants to get a new one while the Chinese rose is normally self-pollinating. Even when all the conditions are right, some luck is needed to grow new types. A new type named Beijing Pink won the Chinese rose contest at the International Horticultural Exhibition in Beijing last month. It took more than 10 years. For the public, it is hard to tell the difference between the Chinese rose and the other roses, even though 85 cities in China have chosen the former as their symbol flower. Many Chinese rose types, grown by people in their homes, have not been confirmed by the government, and there is still a long way to go.

(2022·江苏苏州·统考二模)Yes, you read that right: plants that dance. It’s true. I’ve seen them! Udon Thani is a province in northeast Thailand. There are no big cities there and not as many tourist attractions as there are in other parts of the country. But there is one small plant nursery (苗圃) with one of the most amazing but little-known sights in the world: simple, green plants that look like common weeds (野草).
These special dancing plants area hybrid of the Thani Gyrant and the Chinese Gyrant—the pure parents can’t dance as well as their hybrid child. The scientific name of this type of plant is Codariocalyx motorius (舞草).
Let’s go back to the dancing. Walk through the nursery, and we see many bright, eye-catching plants. Deep in the center of the nursery, is a row of these green weeds. These are the dancing plants. “Stand in front of them and sing,” the nursery worker says.
At first it feels silly to sing to a plant. I sing quietly and shyly, and nothing happens. I think about leaving, but I make myself stay and sing longer. Slowly, the plants start opening and closing their little leaves. The longer and louder I sing, the more they move. When I stop, they stop. I test to see if my breath is making the leaves blow—nope. They’re moving because I’m making a sound. It’s unimaginable to communicate with a plant this way. It makes me think very deeply about the ways all living things are alive. Perhaps we’re more connected with the plant world than we think we are.
Why the plant dances is still a mystery—just another sign that we still have a lot to learn about our world.

A.Northeast Thailand. B.Southern China. C.Japan. D.Southern Thailand.

C.working in the nursery D.communicating with a dancing plant

He would go into the detective business and help people. He wouldn’t wait until he grew up. It was summer and school was out. He could begin at once.
Encyclopedia got out of bed and searched through his closet. He dug out a toy printing press, a Christmas gift from his Uncle Ben two years ago.
As soon as Encyclopedia finished breakfast, he printed fifty leaflets. When the ink (墨水) was dry, he put the leaflets in all the mailboxes in the neighborhood.
Then he went home and asked his mother for a big piece of cardboard. She gave him a dress box from the Bon Ton Store, which she had been saving. Encyclopedia borrowed the kitchen scissors and cut out a square piece of cardboard. He took a black crayon and carefully lettered a sign.
The leaflets and the sign said:
Encyclopedia put up the sign on the door of the Browns’ garage (车库). The next morning, he sat in the garage, waiting for somebody with a problem to drop in. Nobody dropped in. Only the rain. The roof of the garage had a hole in it.
Rain fell all morning, all afternoon, and all the next day.
Encyclopedia looked at the rain and felt lower than a submarine’s (潜水艇) bottom. He thought about taking down the sign and going digging for worms (虫子) with Billy and Jody Turner or fishing off the bridge at Mill Creek.

Throughout its long history, writing has been a big deal in China. Since the earliest dynasties, the skills of reading and writing have been highly respected. In fact, they form an important part of the Chinese art world. Calligraphy(书法), the art of writing with a brush, is almost as old as writing itself. And though this art form dates back thousands of years, it is still very popular today.
________ The answer most likely lies way back in the Shang Dynasty(about 1600-1046 BC). That’s when characters were first used in religious(宗教的)events. This practice showed a spiritual part which gave writing power in the eyes of common people.
Calligraphy spread during the Han Dynasty, when the, necessary tools and materials were more easily got. First there was the brush, made from bamboo and animal hair. Early ink was made by burning pinewood(松木)and mixing it with water. Early forms of paper were invented around AD105. Finally, there was inkstone, a smooth piece of stone used for mixing ink. Together, these tools were known as the “four treasures of study” in ancient China.
Calligraphy has been popular in China for thousands of years. Some say that it’s an even higher art form than painting. Though foreigners may not always get it, there’s something truly special about calligraphy. Every written character has a strict stroke(笔划)order. (2022·江苏苏州·统考二模)Dear Daddy-Long-Legs,
Happy day! I’ve just finished my last examination—Biology. And now:
Three months on a farm!
I don’t know what kind of a thing a farm is. I’ve never been on one in my life. I’ve never even looked at one(except from the car window), but I know I’m going to love it, and I’m going to love being free.
I am not used even yet to being outside the John Grier Home. Whenever I think of it, excited little thrills(心神不定) rise up all over my back. I feel like I must run faster and faster and keep looking over my shoulder to make sure that Mrs. Lippett isn’t after me with her arms open wide in order to pull me back.
I don’t have to mind anyone this summer, do I?
Your so-called power doesn’t worry me in the least; you are too far away to do any harm. Mrs. Lippett will not be in my life any more, so far as I know, and the Semples aren’t expected to give me extra moral(有关道德的) lessons on the farm, are they? No, I am sure not. I am completely grown up. Hooray!

For centuries, the power of Chinese emperors rose and fell with their control of the Grand Canal. Today, this waterway is shorter than it once was, but it is still the longest man-made river in the world. Importantly, the Grand Canal continues to provide a necessary cultural and economic(经济的) link for modern China.
The first canal system began around the year 605. China’s Emperor Yang realized that he needed a better way to feed his army. Specifically, he needed a way to move food quickly from China’s southern rice-growing area to the country’s north. So, the emperor ordered the building of the first section of the Grand Canal, connecting canals, lakes, and rivers. About one million people—mostly farmers—worked on the big project, which took six years.
In addition to moving rice around China, the Grand Canal was an important cultural conduit. Soldiers, businessmen, and artists transported ideas, local foods, and cultural practices from one part of China to another. According to some old stories, this is how Beijing got two of the best-known symbols. Peking duck, a dish from Shandong Province, and the Peking opera, from Anhui and Hubei areas, were both brought north through the canal.
For more than a thousand years, goods have been transported along the Grand Canal. Even today, the country’s watery highway plays an important economic role in China. Boats continue to carry tons of coal, food, and other goods to points between Hangzhou and Jining—now the northernmost city the canal reaches.
In 2014, the historic Grand Canal was made a UNESCO World Heritage Site(联合国教科文组织世界遗产地). It is hoped that the Grand Canal—one of the world’s great engineering achievements—will continue to link north and south China for centuries to come.
108.Why was the Grand Canal first built?
A.To enable more people to visit rice-growing parts of China.
B.To let the army move quickly from the north to the south.
C.To transport food from the southern part of China to the north.
D.To develop the building skills of the farmers all over China.
109.Which of the following is closest in meaning to conduit(Paragraph 3)?
A.Connection. B.Conversation. C.Conclusion. D.Contribution.
110.According to the passage, why has the Grand Canal been important for China?
A.Because it’s the world’s longest man-made river.
B.Because it is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
C.Because it is a watery highway for lots of boats.
D.Because it’s economically linked the north and south.

▸ Starfish Position
Starfish is when you lie on your back and sleep with your arms lifted near your head. Sleep scientist Idzikowski says starfish sleepers value friendship, and that while they prefer not to be the center of attention, people who sleep in this position are good listeners and quick to help others.
Fetal Position◂
The fetal position gets its name from the shape of a baby in the womb. People who sleep in the fetal position tend towards worry and anxiety. They are often shy and sensitive. In the fetal position, a sleeper’s body is essentially curled up into a ball as they lie on one side with legs and arms bent.
▸ Soldier Position
This sleeping position is kind of strange, but common. It’s when you sleep on your back with your arms down and very close to your body. Studies have shown that people who sleep like this may not like to make a big deal out of things. It is actually a good sleeping position, as it helps keep your spine in a straight line.

(2022·江苏无锡·校联考二模)One day Nils was studying at home when suddenly he fell asleep. When he woke up, he saw in the mirror— a tiny Nils! He had become only a little thumb toy figure!
But once he opened the door, he found all of swans circling around them. They chased him. They pinched (掐) him and laughed and said, “Now it is time for you to fear us!”
Then the wild swans flew in and saw their ancestors and said, “Hey, come on! Let us all go to beautiful Switzerland!”
A male swan named Max heard the wild swans, so he scooped up high into the sky. Nils found this good chance to experience new things and held on tight to Max’s neck. They both flew high above into the sky. Nils was very scared, so he didn’t open his eyes at first. At last, he got the courage to open his eyes and look down. He saw the white clouds high up the air and saw the black earth under the ground.
Max’s energy left him behind, so he fell behind the group. Max flapped his wings quickly and quickly, but he still felt down and down. Nils was very worried, so at first, he said, “Don’t worry, Max. You rest for a while and let’s go home!” Max liked his comfort, so he quickly caught up with the group.
The leader of the swans whose name was Oscar saw Nils and asked him, “Who are you?” Nils stood up and said: “My name is Nils. I was a human yesterday, but this morning…” Before Nils could finish his words, all the wild swans took a few steps back. Humans had been the swan’s enemy for centuries! No matter how hard Max tried to let Oscar agree to let Nils stay with them, Oscar still agreed to just let him stay with them for one night.
When they all slept snugly that night, a fox crept out behind a tree. He had kept his eyes on the wild swans for a while, and still thought of their delicious meat even as they slept. Oscar sensed this and told all the swans to get up and fly away to a safer place.
But Max left too quickly and dropped Nils down on the ground. Nils did not get hurt, but he did see the fox carrying the swan between his jaws. Nils shouted to him, “Hey, put the swan down!” He quickly grabbed the fox’s tail and pinched it with all his strength. This move allowed the fox to scream and so dropped the swan out of his mouth. Oscar said to Nils, “You are the first person to do good to a swan. So, you can stay with us for the rest of the journey.”
120.Which of the following can best describe Nils’ personality according to this story?

The Amazon rainforest is moving toward a “tipping point” past which trees will start to die off in large numbers, researchers have said.
The study, published in the Joumal of Natural Climate Change, was conducted by scholars from the University of Exeter, the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research (PIK) and the Technical University of Munich. They used satellite data from 1991 to 2016 to examine trends in deforestation.
They calculated that 75 percent of the rainforest is now at risk of being unable to recover when experiencing droughts, which are also increasingly more common because of global warming.
“Deforestation and climate change are likely to be the main drivers of this decline,” Niklas Boers of PIK and the Technical University of Munich told the BBC.The study has predicted that it is only a matter of decades until a “significant chunk” of the Amazon is changed from rainforest into savannah (大草原).
What would the world be like without the Amazon rainforest?
The destruction of the Amazon rainforest, in some ways caused by global warming, will also speed up this process. “The Amazon stores lots of carbon and all of that would be released into the atmosphere, which would then further contribute to increasing temperatures and have future effects on global mean temperatures,” Professor Boulton of the University of Exeter told the BBC.
This worrying snowball effect means that the destruction of the Amazon will make the much larger battle against global warming more difficult.
The destruction of the Amazon would also have a huge influence on the ecology of the Earth. The Amazon rainforest is home to more than 30,000 species of plants, 2.5 million species of insects, 2,500 fish, over 1,500 bird species, 550 reptiles, and 500 mammals, according to the Wildlife Conservation Society. A savannah, a grassland environment that lacks a large variety of plant life, would be unable to host the large and varied ecosystems that currently exist in the rainforest. It is likely that many animals would become endangered or even die out, as they would be unable to adjust to this new ecosystem.
123.What does the underlined phrase “tipping point” mean in this passage?
A.return to zero B.begin to become less
C.remain unchanged D.begin to become more
124.How is the last paragraph developed?

C.By comparing ideas. D.By describing details.
125.What can we learn from the passage?
A.Researchers used satellite data to check trends in deforestation for more than 30 years.
B.Deforestation and climate change are surely the main factors of the decline of the rainforest.
C.The process of destruction of the rainforest will slow down because action has been taken.
D.It is highly possible that the ecology of the Earth will become out of control.
