(2022·江苏连云港·连云港市新海实验中学校考二模)“How are you?” is a nice question. It’s a friendly way that people in the USA greet each other. But “How are you?” is also a very unusual question. It’s a question that often doesn’t need an answer.
The person who asks “How are you?” hopes to hear the answer “Fine”, even if the person’s friend isn’t fine. The reason is that “How are you?” isn’t really a question and “Fine” isn’t really an answer. They are simply other ways of saying “Hello” or “Hi”.
Sometimes, people don’t say exactly what they mean. For example, when someone asks “Do you agree?” the other person might think, “No, I disagree. I think you’re wrong.” But it isn’t very polite to disagree so strongly, so the other person might say “I’m not sure.” It’s a nicer way to say that you don’t agree with someone.
People don’t say exactly what they are thinking when they want to finish talking with other people. For example, many talks over the phone finish when one person says “I’ve to go now.” Often, the person who wants to hang up gives an excuse: “Someone’s at the door.” “Something is burning on the stove.” The excuses might be real or not. Perhaps the person who wants to hang up simply doesn’t want to talk any more, but it isn’t polite to say that. The excuse is more polite, and it doesn’t hurt the other person.
Whether they are greeting each other, talking about an idea, or finishing a talk, people don’t say exactly what they are thinking. It’s an important way that people try to be nice to each other, and it’s part of the game of language.
4.When a person disagrees with someone, it is polite to say “________”
A.You are wrong. I disagree. B.I’m not sure.
C.I’m sure I disagree. D.I don’t agree with you.
5.A polite way to finish a talk is to say “________”
A.You have to go now. B.I want to hang up.
C.I have to go now. D.I don’t want to talk any more.
6.When a person says “Someone’s at the door.” The person may be ________.
A.giving an excuse B.hurting someone’s feelings
C.talking to a person at the door D.going to another place
7.The rule of the game of language is probably________.
A.“Always say what you mean” B.“Don’t disagree with people”
C.“Never say exactly what you’re thinking” D.“Be nice to each other”
(2022·江苏连云港·连云港市新海实验中学校考二模)Today, an increasing number of people are always looking at their mobile phones with their heads down. These people are called the “Heads down Tribe(低头族)”. Are you a heads down tribe member? Heads down tribe members now can be seen everywhere. More and more traffic accidents are happening because more drivers use mobile phones while driving. In order to make drivers pay more attention to driving, heads down tribe members who use mobile phones while driving in Taiwan are fined.
As we can see above, using mobile phones may cause accidents and even cost a lot of money. Besides, more and more interesting and strange facts happen to the “Heads down Tribe”. Let’s have a look at an interesting TV report. A man in America kept using his mobile phone on his way home. As a result(撞上) a big lost bear. When he lifted his eyes from the phone, he was so scared that he turned around and ran away as quickly as possible. Another fact is that we can often see people in the restaurants eating face to face but looking at their own mobile phones. It’s strange that they don’t talk to the ones who sit opposite to them during the meal. Some of them even have fun communicating with others on the phones.
Mobile phones are helpful and necessary for modern life. Are mobile phones good or not? It depends on how people use them. Let’s be “healthy” users and try to be the “Heads up Tribe”.

(2022·江苏连云港·连云港市新海实验中学校考二模)When you think of the Arctic (北极), you imagine an icy land of pure white snow. Others imagine it as the last really clean place left on earth. We have polluted the deepest oceans with plastic rubbish. “And now.” CNN says, “it’s the Arctic’s turn.”
German scientists have recently found microplastics in Arctic snow. Microplastics are pieces of plastic smaller than 5 millimeters. Sadly, the scientists found 1,800 pieces of microplastics per liter of (每升) snow.
How is plastic pollution reaching the Arctic?
According to scientists, it’s clear that most of the microplastics in the snow come from the air. They fall off the plastic objects and are moved by the wind, just like dust. They mix with ice in the air and fall to the ground as snow. Finding these plastics in Arctic snow means that we may breathe them in.
Are they bad for us? Scientists cannot answer this question for now, according to the WHO. We do know that our bodies cannot take in “large” pieces of microplastics. However, if the plastics are small enough, they can find ways into our bodies and stay there for a long time, which can be bad for our health. What’s more, earlier studies have shown that microplastics may contribute to lung cancer risk.
Microplastics have also been found in rivers and oceans around the world. Earlier research has found that they flow over long distances and into our oceans, hurting ecosystems along the way. They start in our waste water, then flow into rivers and out to the sea, where they are eaten by sea animals. If people then eat these animals, it means that we’re eating the plastic as well.
12.We can learn from Paragraph 1 that ________.
A.the Arctic is the last really clean place left on earth
B.the Arctic is an icy land of pure white snow
C.the Arctic is a beautiful icy land with clean air
D.the Arctic has been polluted by plastic rubbish

A.We may breathe microplastics in Arctic.
B.Microplastics may cause lung cancer.
C.We don’t have to mind microplastics right now.
D.Microplastics have hurt ecosystems.
15.How does the writer end this passage?
A.By advising us to drink clean water.
B.By asking people not to eat sea animals.
C.By telling the seriousness of plastic pollution.
D.By showing the beauty of Arctic.

(2022·江苏苏州·校考二模)My dad was a fisherman. He had his own boat, but it was hard making a living on the sea. He worked hard and would stay out until he caught enough to feed the family. Not just enough for our family, but also for his mom and dad and the other kids that were still at home.
Dad was a big man, and he was strong from pulling the nets and fighting the sea for his catch. When you got close to him, you smelled the sea.
When the weather was bad, he would drive me to school in his old truck. It was older than he was. You could hear it coming from a couple of blocks away. On the way, I would shrink down into(缩进) the seat hoping to disappear. He would stop right in front of the school, and it seemed like everybody would be standing around and watching. Then he would lean over and give me a big kiss on the cheek and tell me to be a good boy. It was making me feel really uncomfortable! Here I was twelve years old, and my dad would lean over and kiss me good-bye!
I remembered the day I thought I was too old for a good-bye kiss. When we got to school and came to a stop, he had his usual big smile. He started to lean towards me, but I put my hand up and said, “No, Dad.” It was the first time I had ever talked to him that way. “Dad, I’m too old for a good-bye kiss.”
My dad looked at me for the longest time, and his eyes started to tear up. I had never seen him cry. He turned and looked out. “You’re right,” he said. “You are a big boy ... a man. I won’t kiss you any more.”
It wasn’t long after that when my dad went to sea and never came back. It was the day when most of the boats stayed in, but not dad.
Guys, you don’t know what I would give to have my dad give me just one more kiss on the cheek...to feel his rough old face...to smell the sea on him...to feel his arm around my neck. I wish I had been a man then. If I had been a man, I would be a man. I would never have told my dad I was too old for a good-bye kiss.

(2022·江苏苏州·校考二模)Romeo had been in a good mood all morning. He’d had a dream that he was about to receive some good news. He was lighthearted and he walked through the streets of magic feeling that his feet weren’t touching the ground.
His dream was that Juliet had found him dead. And although it was a strange dream that allowed a dead man to think and feel, she had brought him back to life with her kisses and made him as happy as a king. He smiled as he walked. It just showed how wonderful the real thing was if even dreams about love could make you feel so good.
Wasn’t that his man, Balthazar, coming down the street? It was. It must be good news from Verona.
“Balthazar,” he said. “Have you got a letter from the Friar? How’s my wife? And my father? Is he alright?” Romeo did a little jig, dancing round his servant. “How’s Juliet? I’m asking that because if she’s well then everything is wonderful.”
Balthazar said nothing. He stared at the ground, avoiding Romeo’s eyes. Romeo stopped his dancing. Balthazar was crying.
“She’s well. So nothing can be wrong.” said Balthazar. He turned his back on Romeo and blurted, “ Her body’s sleeping in Capulet’s tomb and her soul’s among the angels.”
Romeo felt cold, even in that terrible heat. He expressed his doubt about his servant’s words.
“I watched them putting her in their family vault (墓穴),” said Balthazar, “and then came straight to you.” He saw the pain in Romeo’s face and wished he could think of some way of cheering him up.
“It can’t be!” said Romeo at last. He turned away. “The stars are against us. But I won’t give in to them!” He turned back to Balthazar. “Go and get me some paper and ink and hire us some horses.”
“I beg of you, sir,” said Balthazar, “be careful. You’re so sad and I ’m worried that something bad is going to happen.”
“You’re wrong, said Romeo.” “Just do as I tell you. Haven’t you got a letter from the Friar?”

There are a few different kinds of hockey, including ice hockey and field hockey. One of the biggest differences between the sports is the surface on which they are played. Some suggest that field hockey has been around for thousands of years. There is evidence to support that a similar game was played by ancient people in Greece and Rome.
Ice hockey has been around, officially, since the late 1800s. This is when the rules were made by J.A.Creighton. The first league was in place by the early 1900s. Later, ice hockey became an Olympic sport.
Hockey is a team sport with six players on two opposing teams. The game is played on a rink of ice with two goals at each end. The standard rink size is 200 feet long and 85 feet wide. Players, all wearing ice skates, move a disk called a puck around the ice. Their purpose is to shoot the puck into the other team’s goal. The goal is a net that is six feet wide and four feet tall. Each goal is guarded by a goalie, who is the only one that can touch the puck with his hockey stick as well as any part of his body. Goalies can even use their feet to stop the puck from getting into the net.
A hockey stick is what players use to move the puck. It is usually 5 to 6 feet in length with a flat blade at the end. Hockey sticks are straight sticks made of wood. The puck is made of vulcanized (硫化的) rubber, which is a much better material than the first pucks. It’s said that the first informal hockey games were played with pucks made of frozen cow waste! The modern puck is typically one inch thick and three inches in diameter.
36 Instead, the names of the winning hockey team’s players, coaches, and managers are added to the presentation cup. There are five rings of names. The oldest ring is removed when a new one is added.

How to be a safe and smart searcher
Several keywords will help to find better results.
Use more than one keyword when you are doing a search. If you want to find out about seagulls, for example, search for “bird seagull” and not just “seagull” -- because seagull might also be the name of just about anything else, from a hotel to a documentary film.
Exact reference can help you find what you’re looking for.
If you are looking for an exact phrase or sentence, e.g. “seagulls are very clever”, type it between inverted commas (“”) and only exact matches will be shown. This is useful when you want to find something you’ve already seen but lost.
Avoid common words like “a” or “the” in a search. These aren’t always helpful and are usually unnecessary.
Remove unwanted results by adding a minus symbol (-). For example, “Seagull-hotel-film” would leave out all references to hotels and films.
Check your spelling.
Make sure that you spell every word in the search box correctly. The smallest typing mistakes can bring unwanted results -- especially when the mistyped word exists.
Have a filter.
It’s a good idea to filter(过滤) your online searchers, especially when you are searching for pictures. Ask an adult to help you add a filtering system. There are lots of filtering software options available.
Experiment with different search engines until you find the one that’s best for you. Some search engines personalize the results, so check out the option of using a search engine that doesn’t do this and you will get different results.
Reliability is very important when you search on the Internet.
Always ask yourself, “Is this reliable?” Don’t make the mistake of believing everything you see. Some websites are unreliable and some information is false. Check your information on other websites before accepting it.
28.Which of the following things should you do as a smart searcher?
a. Use only one keyword in a single search.
b. Avoid terms like “a” or “the” in a search.
c. Choose your search engine carefully.
d. Pay no attention to small spelling mistakes.
e. Compare information from different sites.
A.abc B.ace C.bcd D.bce
29.According to the passage, the minus symbol .
A.can make search results more exactly B.is equal to inverted commas in a search
C.is likely to give you a long list of results D.is usually considered unnecessary in a search
30.From the passage, we know that a filtering system .
A.is used to tick out false information on a website
B.is especially important while searching for pictures
C.personalizes your results when you are doing a search
D.is useful to find something you’ve already seen but lost
(2022·江苏常州·统考二模)It seems food deliverymen (送货员) are always in a hurry. They wear blue, red or yellow helmets and many of them don’t follow traffic rules. They drive on the wrong side of the road and run red lights. They use mobile phones while driving. These reckless (鲁莽的) behaviors have caught the public’s attention.
In the first half of 2017, food deliverymen had 76 traffic accidents in Shanghai, according to Shanghai Public Security Bureau. That means every two and a half days, a food deliveryman will die or get hurt on the road.
What makes deliverymen take such risks? The strict rules of the food delivery service companies and the anxious (焦急的) customers may be the answer.
Many companies will fine a deliveryman up to 2,000 yuan, if he fails to deliver an order on time, reported China Daily. Fines also go to those who get bad reviews from customers.
To solve the problem, food delivery service companies need to improve their incentive systems (激励制度), noted CRI Online.
Some cities are also taking action. Shanghai has asked companies to train their deliverymen on traffic rules and safety. Now in Shenzhen, if a deliveryman gets caught breaking traffic rules more than twice, then he will be banned from driving food service delivery vehicles (交通工具) for a whole year .

On the last evening of my mom’s most recent trip to visit me in London, she sat across the table peeling pomegranate(石榴) seeds into a big bowl.
“Eat this tomorrow after I’m gone, you lazy bee,” she teased, dismissing the piles of books, clothes and electronics across the table waiting to be packed into her luggage.
Mom knows me too well: pomegranate seeds are my favorite. They never appear on my food schedule though, as I lack the patience to peel them properly. Mom doesn’t have the patience either, except when it comes to feeding me.
Her hands moved gently and swiftly, while her eyes looked carefully at the small watery little seeds, attentively trying not to crush(压碎) them.
When I woke up the next day and opened the fridge. Sure enough, waiting for me was a clear jar of perfect smooth and shiny pomegranate seeds.
Ever since I left home to study in London ten years ago, food has been a big part of mom’s London visits.
With each trip, she would be sure to fill the entire fridge with hand-made dumplings, rice cakes, rice puddings, sesame filled sweet dumplings and many other sweets I struggle to find English translations for.
I love watching her turn the loose white flour into moon-shaped dumplings magically, and place them neatly into a tray.
Whenever it’s time to say goodbye, mom would never say that she misses me, or that she loves me. Instead, she’ll just say: “don’t starve yourself while I’m not with you”. That’s because she belongs to a generation where food is an expression of love. At that time, her favorite after-school activity was visiting an old granny, who would feed her rice mixed with sesame oil. “Mmm… that’s the best food we could hope for back then,” she would say.
In her generation, people would greet each other saying “Have you eaten?” We don’t do that in China anymore, but I still look forward to the tradition of my whole family gathering together to prepare food across a big kitchen table at special occasions, such as the Chinese New Year. Such sweet childhood memories have stayed with me.
It’s funny that living in the super health-conscious city of London has taught me to think about food in terms of calories and carb content. Well, mom’s home-made dumplings don’t have any food labels. No calorie calculation, no fat percentages, nothing on the package telling me to eat my “five a day”. Instead, every bite of mom’s food tastes of love, and of the feeling of home.
34.Mum peeled pomegranate seeds on the last evening because .
A.she was good at peeling fruit B.she loved me -- her daughter
C.they were her own favourite fruit D.I was too lazy to peel them for her
35.Each time my mom came to London, she would .
A.buy different kinds of fruit for me B.make traditional British food for me
C.make traditional Chinese food for me D.fill the kitchen with all kinds of things
36.According to the passage, people of my mother’s generation greet each other by .
A.saying “Have you eaten?” B.making home-made dumplings
C.visiting an old granny with food D.sharing food like cakes and puddings
37.Which of the following is most likely to be the title?
A.A Chinese mom’s favourite food B.Food that a Chinese mom can make
C.The healthiest food in the world D.Food -- a cheerful way to show love
(2022·江苏常州·统考二模)Driverless cars are coming. Such cars will make getting from one place to another safer and less stressful. They also could reduce pollution. But how should driverless cars deal with emergencies (紧急情况)? People disagree on the answer. And that might put the brakes (刹车)on this technology, a new study concludes.
To understand the challenge, imagine a car that suddenly meets some walkers in the road. Even with braking, it’s too late to avoid a crash. So the car’s artificial intelligence (人工智能)must decide whether to swerve (急转弯). To save the walkers, should the car swerve off the road or swerve into busy traffic? What if such choices would likely kill the car’s passengers?
Researchers used online surveys to study people’s attitudes about such situations with driverless cars. People mostly agreed that driverless cars should be designed to protect the most people. But there is a problem. Those same surveyed people also want to protect passengers at all costs—even if the walkers would now end up dying.
“Driverless cars can completely change transportation”, says Iyad Rahwan. But, he adds, this new technology creates a moral problem that could slow its acceptance.
Makers of driverless cars are in a hard situation, Bonnefbn’s group warns. Most buyers would want their cars to be designed to protect themselves first. However, rules might one day instruct that cars must act for the greater good. That would mean saving the most people. But the scientists think rules like this could drive away buyers.
The expert Kurt Gray thinks that even if all driverless cars are designed to protect their passengers in emergencies, traffic accidents will decrease. Those cars might be dangerous to walkers on rare occasions. But they won’t speed, won’t drive drunk while driving, which would be a win for society.
38.The underlined word “challenge” in Paragraph 2 refers to ________.

Students from a Middle School, experience farming during their labor course. Housework like cooking and washing always ends up at the bottom of many of our to-do lists. Some people even think that it should be taken care of by their parents.
However, these life skills are important and should be taught as part of labor education. On June 3, 2020, the Ministry of Education (MOE) (教育部) gave a revised (修订后的) course for high schools across the county. Labor education, also called education on the hardworking spirit, range from housework to school labor and community voluntary services (社会志愿服务).
“Labor education must be carried out with the aim to develop the view of the world, life and values and develop an interest in doing chores.” said Zheng Fuzhi, a Vice-Minister (副部长) of Education.
According to China Youth Daily, the labor course will take six credits—the same as English and physics, Voluntary service, as part of labor education, would take two credits. The MOE also asks schools to make sure 40 hours of voluntary service during the full three school years.
According to Xinhua, adding labor education was out of care that the country’s youngsters do too little housework and that they think labor jobs aren’t important. Because of a lot of school stress, schools pay more attention to the educational course, and parents sometimes think that housework wastes their kids’ time.
According to a survey, primary and middle school students in China only spend 12 minutes a day on chores, compared with 72 minutes in the US, 42 minutes in South Korea and 30 minutes in France.

(2022·江苏泰州·统考二模)Navigation (导航) is an important ability for animals to find food and living places. Researchers in Israel have performed an experiment and found that goldfish are able to navigate on land after receiving around 10 driving lessons.
The experiment was led by a research team at the Ben-Gurion University. It was made to see whether goldfish could find their way in a very different environment. Researchers developed a robotic car that could drive forward, backward, and from side to side. They called the car a FOV — “Fish Operated Vehicle” (鱼驱动车). A goldfish was placed inside a water box on the FOV. Using a set of wheels with a camera system, the FOV recorded the fish’s movements and swimming directions, then moved in the same direction.
The scientists worked with six different goldfish. They placed the car in a small room with a pink target (目标) on one side. The fish would get food when the car touched the target. After a few days of training, the fish navigated to the target. At first, it took them about half an hour to drive to the target. But by the end of the experiment, they were able to complete the same task in less than a minute. Shachar Givon, one of the researchers said, “As anyone who has tried to learn how to ride a bike or to drive a car knows, it is challenging at first.”
Not only did the goldfish show that they could drive to the target, they weren’t fooled by false targets of other colors. They were also able to get free when the car hit a wall.
Although the fish may not have realized they were moving on land, these results show that a fish has the ability to navigate outside its natural environment of water. It can enrich scientific knowledge of animals’ navigation skills.

(2022·江苏无锡·江苏省锡山高级中学实验学校校考二模)In fairy tales, it’s usually the princess that needs protecting. At Google in Silicon Valley, the princess is the one defending the castle. Parisa Tabriz is a 31-year-old with perhaps the most unique job title in engineering — “Google Security Princess”. Her job is to hack into the most popular web browser (浏览器) on the Earth, trying to find weaknesses in the system before the “black hats” do. To defeat Google’s attackers, Tabriz must first think like them.
Tabriz’s role has changed a lot in the eight years since she first started working at Google. Back then, the young graduate from Illinois University was one of 50 security engineers — today there are over 500.
Internet Crime has come a long way in the past decade — from the Nigerian Prince Scam to credit card theft. Tabriz’s biggest concern now is the people who find bugs in Google’s software, and sell the information to governments or criminals. To fight against this, the company has set up a “Vulnerability Rewards Programme”, paying anywhere from $100 to $ 20,000 for reported mistakes.
It’s a world away from Tabriz’s computer-free childhood home in Chicago. The daughter of an Iranian-American doctor father, and Polish-American nurse mother, Tabriz had little contact with computers until she started studying engineering at college. Take a close look at a line-up of Google security staff today, and you’ll find women like Tabriz are few and far between — though in the last few years she has hired more female tech geniuses. Tabriz agrees there’s an obvious gender (性别) disequilibrium in Silicon Valley.
Funnily enough, during training sessions, Tabriz first asks new colleagues to hack into not a computer, but a vending machine (自动售货机). Tabriz’s job is as much about technological know-how as understanding the psychology (心理) of attackers.
63.What can we know about Tabriz?
A.She uses both technology and psychology while working.
B.She was the first female engineer at Google.
C.She learnt much computer knowledge in her childhood.
D.She must think differently from attackers to defeat them.

(2022·江苏无锡·江苏省锡山高级中学实验学校校考二模)Bertie was sad for weeks, months after the lion died. There was nothing I could do to cheer him or even console him. He would sit for hours in his room, or go off on long walks all on his own. He seemed so shut away inside himself. Try as I did, I could not reach him.
Then one day I was in the kitchen here, when I saw him hurrying down the hill, waving his stick and shouting to me. “I’ve got it,” he cried, as he came in, “I’ve got it at last.” He showed me the end of his stick. It was white. “See that, Millie?” “Chalk! It’s chalk underground, isn’t it?”
“So?” I said.
“You know the famous White Horse on the hillside at Uffington, the one they carved (雕刻) out of the chalk a thousand years ago? That horse never died, did it? It’s still alive, isn’t it? Well, that’s what we’re going to do, so he will never be forgotten. We’ll carve the White Prince out on the hillside — he’ll be there forever, and he’ll be white forever too. ”
“It’ll take a bit of time, won’t it?” I said.
“We’ve got plenty, haven’t we?” he replied, with the same smile he had smiled at me when he was a ten-year-old boy asking me if he could come back and mend my kite for me.
Every spare hour we had, we were up there scraping (刨土) away with spades (铲子), and we had buckets (桶) to carry away the earth. It was hard, back-breaking work, but it was a labour of love. We did it, Bertie and I, we did it together — paws, claws, tail, mane, until he was complete and perfect in every detail.
It was just after we’d finished that the butterflies first came. We noticed that when the sun comes out after the rain in the summer, the butterflies — Adonis Blues, they are, I looked them up — come out to drink on the chalk face. Then the White Prince becomes a butterfly lion, and breathes again like a living creature.
So now you know how Bertie’s white lion became the White Prince and how the White Prince became our butterfly lion.

(2022·江苏无锡·江苏省锡山高级中学实验学校校考二模)Phil Wise’s heart raced as he opened one of the transport tubes. He and a team of scientists stepped back as a young Tasmanian devil (袋獾) named Oddity came out. Oddity took a cautious look around and then ran into the forest on Maria Island.
Wise is a wildlife scientist from the Save the Tasmanian Devil Program. The scientists working with this program study Tasmanian devils, monitor their health, and track the devils found in the wild. Oddity and 14 others were raised in a reserve and then brought to Maria Island to be released (释放) into the wild. Though they are raised in zoos all over the world, devils live wild only in Tasmania. They are important to the ecosystem because they eat dead animals they find, which helps clean up the environment. Devils also eat animals such as wallabies, wombats, and possums, helping to keep those populations balanced.
But a cancer called Devil Facial Tumor Disease (DFTD) is killing devils on mainland Tasmania, endangering the species (物种). The goal of the scientists who released Oddity and the others was to create a population of disease-free Tasmanian devils on Maria Island. Oddity is a part of this “insurance population” of devils raised in zoos and wildlife reserves. This means if the facial disease causes the Tasmanian devils to die out in the wild, devils like Oddity can be sent back into disease-free areas of Tasmania, giving devils a chance to survive.
The scientists chose Maria Island for the release because there is no DFTD there. It is separated from mainland Tasmania by the ocean. Devils from the rest of Tasmania can’t get there, which prevents the facial disease from spreading. Oddity started his new life on Maria Island. Life on this island off the coast of Tasmania was a big change for Oddity and the others. These devils had little experience with other kinds of animals and had to explore the land and find new bones. Wise and his fellow scientists monitored Oddity and the 14 other Tasmanian devils. The animals did so well that 13 more devils were released. The 28 original Tasmanian devils have reproduced; there are now around 80 devils. They are doing well on Maria Island, and the plan is considered a success.
Wise says he is “extremely happy to know that animals are getting a chance to be free in the wild in an area that is free of DFTD.It is the ultimate aim of all who work to conserve endangered species.”
69.Why did Wise and his team release the Tasmanian devils like Oddity to Maria Island?
A.To prevent DFTD killing Tasmanian devils out.
B.To find out a treatment for DFTD.
C.To control the DFTD spread on mainland Tasmania.
D.To protect Maria Island from DFTD.
70.What probably made Maria Island chosen for the release?
A.Its rich wildlife. B.Its geographic location.
C.Its natural resources. D.Its improved ecosystem.
71.How was the released Tasmanian devils’ life?
A.Their safety was uncertain. B.Their number was going up.
C.They hardly enjoyed freedom. D.They got well again from DFTD.
72.What does the passage mainly talk about?
A.A program studying Tasmanian devils. B.A disease attacking Tasmanian devils.
C.A step to save Tasmanian devils. D.A perfect place for Tasmanian devils.

Our knowledge of the development of cells, from which all forms of life are made, is not complete because we do not understand very well the conditions on our planet four billion years ago. Why and how did cells first appear? Was this very probable to happen under the conditions then? Might this happen in other places in the universe(宇宙)?
② . A group of scientists at University College London are trying to answer these questions. They started by studying the ways in which the first cells on the Earth might have been formed. Next they will use a powerful new telescope(望远镜) to look at places far away in the universe. The scientists hope that the results will improve our understanding of the development of life on the Earth and help us to find similar conditions for life development on other planets.
③ . Dr Nick Lane, who is in charge of(负责) the University College London team, has suggested that 4 billion years ago warm water springs(泉) on the floor of the Earth’s ocean might have helped to create life. Each spring consists of tiny connected holes that water passes through. The team has created models of these springs with these holes in their lab. They have found that they encourage chemical reactions(反应) between hydrogen(氢) in the liquids(液体) that come out of them and the carbon dioxide(二氧化碳) in the sea water.
④ . These building blocks are not living themselves, but when there are enough of them joined together in the right way, they can make living things. (2021·江苏南通·统考二模)People are no longer surprised at artificial intelligence (AI), which is reshaping our lives in every way. But how will it develop in 2021? A Forbes article has shown AI trends for 2021.
Smarter analytics (分析)
The year of 2020 saw the abilities of AI. During the global pandemic, people got to follow the changes in the numbers of infected (受感染的) people and the death, as well as the virus thanks to AI. In this way, many lives were saved from the virus. In 2021, AI will be widely used in many healthcare areas, including finding solutions to deal with cancer. And it will help study viruses’possible changes in the future and develop more effective and lasting vaccines.
Automated checking and prevention
It seems people have gotten used to being scanned by a contactless thermometer (无接触体温计) when walking into a shop. They may also have to scan a QR code to record the places they go and show their green health code to doorkeepers. Its just the new normal. Behind this, facial recognition technology makes the tracing system possible. More AI-driven systems will be put into practice this year.
Predicting behavioral changes
The pandemic has brought huge challenges for traditional industries but not to e-commerce. Amazon’s sales during the second quarter of 2020 were up 40 percent compared to the same period of 2019, according to Forbes. AI has played a key role in it. With the help of AI, businesses have learned more about customers’ behaviors and personalities during the pandemic. Therefore, in 2021, tools providing organizations with self-service using this technology will become increasingly prevalent, as small and medium-sized companies try to compete with the big businesses that have already gone digital (数字的).
Pandemic prevention
AI is heading toward epidemic prediction as the main public health application. (2021·江苏南通·统考二模)What goes into mind when you think of kung fu, also known as wushu? Maybe the image of Shaolin monks fighting with a serious look in their eyes, or popular children’s movies like Kung Fu Panda. But are they really kung fu?
Recently, Laurence J. Brahm, a documentary filmmaker from the United States, explored this question in Searching for Kung Fu. In the movie, Brahm began a journey of a kung fu pilgrimage(朝圣), traveling to cities in China and the US to search for the origin(起源) and value of kung fu.
Brahm himself is a kung fu lover who has been practicing for more than 40 years. For him, practicing this craft was more than fun.
Around 10 years ago, Brahm was unable to use one of his legs for about two years. But by practicing martial arts (武术) “very, very slowly”, he was able to recover step by step. Now, kung fu has become a daily activity for him.
“Martial arts can help us connect our body, connect our blood flow, and also help connect us into our environment to increase our awareness.” Brahm said.
Still others find other meanings in the practice.
“Chinese kung fu is full of Chinese philosophies(哲学)and core(核心)values,” Hong Kong actor Bruce Leung told Xinhua.
⑧Non-fight is one of these values, which is shown both in the name and the practice. Wu, is made up of two characters—age, meaning “dagger-ax”, and zhi, meaning “to stop”. So, the meaning of kung fu in Chinese is the art of stopping fighting. Kung fu artists always end up with baoquan. This lets each person know that there is nothing hidden and shows trust.
Brahm’s sees Kung fu as “a mirror of Chinese culture”.
The traditional values of kung fu, actually, are in the minds of all Chinese people. Why does China want to be in harmony with other nations? “Its part of the psychology(心理) of the Chinese people. It’s also national psychology.” Brahm told Xinhua.
Bralm also believes that today’s world needs to restart equal exchanges between countries, and that culture and sports, such as kung fu, can serve as a great channel and bridge.

(2021·江苏南通·统考二模)A phenomenon known as “kuakuaqun” or “praise groups” has taken Chinese social media by storm. The number of related topics on Weibo has reached more than 23 million. Users can join a chat group on WeChat or QQ, where they are showered with varieties of generous praise and encouragement. Praising others like this is also very popular among teens who prefer to call it “Rainbow Fart”.
Just imagine the scenes: You get an A in an exam and you want to get some praise. When you post it into a praise group, you are praised for not only your efforts but also being as clever as Albert Einstein. It’s 10 p.m. and you are the only person in the office. You receive a reply, “You are so hardworking! You’ll definitely get a promotion (升职)! Praise to you!” Even if you go to a toilet and forget taking some tissue, someone points out that “you’re caring about trees and the environment! Good for you!”
How would you feel?
The appearance of “praise groups” provides an opportunity for ordinary people who cannot get positive feedback easily in their daily life to get comfort from their hearts. It also shows the life and social pressure of today’s young people. Moreover, the popularity of these chat groups is a reflection of Chinese culture which values modesty and humility — people often hide their true emotion of seeking and giving praise. As long as people’s praise doesn’t sound obviously untruthful, you’re likely to welcome it. Being richly affirmed (肯定) for what you door who you are — just feel good. Sometimes, people enjoy praising others as well, just because here they can drop everything and have fun by giving lavish (夸张的) comments. However, some people are also willing to encourage and support others from their hearts.
Some netizens (网民) shared their ideas, “I take it as a way of adjusting the mood. The praise group helps in adding our confidence. Some sincere praises can even be inspiring. However, if you’re really in trouble, it is you who holds the final key.” Clearly, some dishonest praise comes at a cost. Chen Kan, an associate professor in Fudan University’s psychology department warned that “The biggest risk is to continue to stress on the ‘false self’, which makes it harder to see the ‘true self’.” In the end, people in the group will find that such unreasonable praise doesn’t help solve the real problem. Soon the whole group will be silent and dead.
Perhaps the praise groups are “a flash in the pan”, which might disappear sooner or later. No matter how you think of it, only when you can understand the pressure, criticism and praise correctly, will you face them bravely. Don’t lose yourself in others’ voices—that is what really matters.

In the morning, all of the girls discussed this activity. But when the boys came, we stopped at once. After a welcome speech, the first activity took place: find a boy partner and learn five things about each other.
At first, the situation was so strange that nobody moved. Gradually, some people started talking.
“Would you like to be my partner?” the boy next to me said.
“Sure,” I replied.
We stood together and asked each other questions like “What’s your name?” after we took the first step, the rest was easier.
To my surprise, we had a lot of interests in common. We both like British singer Ed Sheeran. Also, English is our favorite subject.
The most exciting part was dancing. The teacher taught boys and girls separately (分别地), we all smiled and studied hard. The lesson didn’t last long, as we had to practice with our partners.
To be honest, it was my first time to hold a boy’s hands. I made many mistakes even with the simplest steps, but my partner never blamed me.
My hands got sweaty (出汗), my partner said, “Don’t be nervous. I will lead you.” his palms were big and warm, I began to calm down and enjoy dancing.

(2021·江苏苏州·苏州市苏州高新区第一中学校考二模)For the past 50 years, spanking has been used to punish children less and less. But what about yelling (喊叫)? Almost everyone still yells at children from time to time, even those parents who know it’s useless. Shouting is probably the most unwise behavior of parenting today.
In people who often yell, their children often feel stressed. A published in the Journal of Child Development showed that yelling at children has results similar to body punishment. Yelling will only make your child feel that you are out of control. It makes you look weak.
But most parents, myself included, find it really hard to spend the day without yelling. The latest research on shouting asks parents two questions: What should I do? How can I give up this habit?
Don’t yell at him every night just because the child throws his shoes around, but ask him in the morning if he can leave the shoes in place when he goes home. Make sure you go home and put your shoes away. If your child puts his shoes in place, even if they can put them near where they should be put, tell him that this is good, then hug him.
ABC Praise is a very effective way. You must be happy, so you must put a silly smile on your face and even raise your hand to wave. Next you have to say what you praise with a very happy and pleasant voice. The third step is to touch the child and give him some words of praise. It makes children notice the praise that comes with correct behavior. That’s the point.
If children behave better, then we won’t yell. If we don’t yell, children will behave better. Let your child do what you want and don’t do what you don’t want through the day. Praise is effective. And punishment is not.
108.What may happen if parents often shout at their children?
A.They will be more stressed. B.They will be better at study.
C.They will behave better. D.They will get more praise.
109.Which of the following is a suitable way to correct children’s behavior?
A.Forbid children having dinner when they come home with a B on the paper.
B.Tell children to turn off the light while leaving a room in a gentle voice.
C.Punish children seriously only once if they forget to tidy up their toys.
D.Always shout at children when they don’t clean the mud from shoes.
110.What is the best title for the passage?
A.Yelling Lead to Higher Depression.
B.Stop Yelling and Try ABC Praise more.
C.Good Behavior Comes with praise.
D.The More Yelling, the more Progress.

Zhengyi, in her twenties, was trying to find out how eclipses (月食) of the moon happened. Through many experiments, she finally explained the eclipse clearly and currently.
Unlike boys, most of the girls in China couldn’t get proper education at that time. However, Zhengyi was lucky enough to be taught by her family at home as a little girl. She also gained a lot of knowledge from reading her grandfather’s collection of books and her interest in astronomy (天文学) and math grew.
