    Unit 8 Green Living Lesson 1 Roots and Shoots

     

    Aim:

    To introduce students to the concept of environmentalism and the importance of preserving natural habitats.

     

    Objectives:

    By the end of the lesson, students will be able to:

    Define the term "environmentalism."

    Describe the work of Jane Goodall and the Roots and Shoots program.

    Identify the ways in which humans impact the environment.

    Discuss the importance of preserving natural habitats.

     

    Materials:

    Whiteboard and markers

    Projector and computer

    Handouts on Jane Goodall and the Roots and Shoots program

    Video on environmental issues and human impact on nature

     

    Warm-up:

    The teacher will start the class by asking students to brainstorm words related to the environment. The teacher will write down the words on the whiteboard and ask students to explain their meanings. This will lead into a discussion of the importance of the environment and the impact humans have on it.

     

    Presentation:

    The teacher will introduce the concept of environmentalism and its importance in preserving natural habitats. The teacher will show a video on environmental issues and the human impact on nature. The teacher will also introduce Jane Goodall and the Roots and Shoots program, highlighting the work they do to protect natural habitats and promote environmental sustainability.

     

    Practice:

    The teacher will distribute handouts on Jane Goodall and the Roots and Shoots program. Students will read the handouts and answer questions about the work of Jane Goodall and the Roots and Shoots program. The teacher will lead a class discussion on the ways in which humans impact the environment and the importance of preserving natural habitats.

     

    Application:

    The teacher will assign a project in which students will research and present on a specific environmental issue, such as deforestation, pollution, or climate change. Students will be required to suggest practical solutions to the problem and encourage others to take action to protect the environment.

     

    Assessment:

    The teacher will assess students' understanding of the concept of environmentalism and the importance of preserving natural habitats through class discussion and their presentation of their project.

    What can you do in your daily life to contribute to protecting the environment?

    Answers will vary.

     

    Homework:

    Students will be asked to write a reflection on what they have learned in the class about environmentalism and the importance of preserving natural habitats. They will also be asked to suggest one practical way in which they can contribute to protecting the environment in their daily lives.
