Olga Bannova doesn’t carry a business card that reads “Space Architect”, though she admits that would be pretty cool. Instead, Bannova’s title is director of the Sasakawa International Center for Space Architecture( SICSA) in the University of Houston’s Cullen College of Engineering.
SICSA is home to the world’s only space architecture graduate program. It’s not a huge program yet, accepting only a few graduates every year. But for those who believe our very existence relies on someday moving to a different galactic (银河的) neighborhood, space architecture has us covered. “You can’t stay in your house and think that somehow everyhing else will be the saine. Everything is changing, including our Earth, including us, including the solar system. It’s all changing and moving,” Bannova says. “That’s why it’s important. Space architecture will consider all that we need in space.”
Space architects design buildings and houses and offices and a whole bunch of other stuff that humans need to survive—both here and in space plus design ways to get between them. They deal with problems that Earthbound architects don’t even dream about. For example a lack of oxygen or atmosphere. A lack of sunlight. Too much sunlight. Microgravity. A lack of material to build what you need. Or no way to ship material that you need to where you need it.
It’s not hard to imagine the problems that space architects will face, now and in the future. It’s not hard to imagine either that we can’t even begin to imagine some of the challenges they’ll be up against. Carving out a space in space for our species to continue is a huge undertaking, perhaps the most daring ever for mankind. But we’ve taken the first step, haven’t we?
4. What is special about SICSA?
A. It is the only space research center.
B. It trains graduates to become spacemen.
C. It accepts lots of graduates every year.
D. It has a unique program in the world.
5. The underlined part “has us covered” in paragraph 2 means ________.
A. reports the latest news B. hides something important
C. provides what’s needed D. informs us of the development
6. Which aspect of space architects is paragraph 3 mainly about?
A. Their duties. B. Their challenges.
C. Their dreams. D. Their achievements.
7. What does the author think of space architects’ work?
A. Tiring. B. Admirable. C. Problematic. D. Fruitful.
D 5. C 6. A 7. B

Next time you are struggling with the crossword, try putting the kettle on. Drinking a cup of tea can improve creativity, a study suggests.
Researchers gave men and women either tea or water and then asked them to complete a word association game, which was used to measure a form of creativity known as convergent thinking
In the game, the participants were given sets of words such as “same, tennis, head” and asked to find a meaningful link between them. The answer, in this case, would be “match?”. After analysing the results in a way that ruled out the potential effects of a person’s intelligence and language ability, the researchers, from Peking University in China, found that those who drank the tea performed significantly better in the word association game. The tea drinkers scored an average of 13. 89 in the word association game compared with 12. 94 for water drinkers.
The researchers said it was not clear why tea has this beneficial effect. Tea contains caffeine and theanine, which can improve attention, but the 100 participants in the study drank only a small amount of tea—90ml, on average—and caried out the tests very soon after consuming it, meaning any effect would have been ignored. “This result showed that the tea drinking event itself—rather than the biological com-ponents of tea—played a positive role,” the researchers said.
“Previous research has found that people tend to associate tea drinking with a specific set of personality traits, such as smart, creative, elegant, confident, and stable. It may be that when participants are stimulated (刺激) by tea, the mental representation of a tea drinker is also activated, and they unconsciously think that they should be smarter and more creative,” they added, “Future research should focus on specific mechanisms (机制) and clarify which variables moderate the impact of tea consumption on convergent thinking.
8. What did the participants have to do in the study?
A. Pair the words with each other.
B. Guess the meaning of the words.
C. Find a connection between the words.
D. Tell the differences among the words.
9. What helped a participant get a higher score according to the researchers?
A. The action of drinking tea itself.
B. The participant’s intelligence.
C. The participant’s language ability.
D. The biological components of tea.
10. What can be inferred from the previous research?
A. Drinking tea makes people more active.
B. Drinking tea is popular among the youth.
C. People tend to drink tea more than before.
D. People drinking tea are often thought smart.
11. Which of the following can be the best title of the text?
A. Drinking Tea Is Good for Health.
B. Drinking Tea Is A Popular Trend.
C. Drinking Tea Makes for Creativity.
D. Drinking Tea Matters A Lot in Life.

Anyone who’s tried different weight-loss diets is probably familiar with their pitfalls. Low-calorie diets often leave you tired and hungry. Low-fat diets are also tough to follow and, contrary lo popular belief, they do not seem lo prevent heart disease.
Another diet trend, intermittent fasting, takes a different approach. Rather than limiting what you cat, this diet limits when you cat. It normally involves eating only during a certain time window, usually eight hours, over a single day. For example, you would eat only during the hours of 9 a. m. to 5 p. m. and then fast during the other 16 hours. For some people, thal change may be easier to manage, says Dr. Eric Rim, professor of epidemiology and nutrition at the Harvard T. H. Chan School of Public Health.
Short-termism studies suggest that people stick to intermittent fasting diets as well as or better than they do to other diets. And according to a 2019 review article in the journal Nutrients, intermittent fasting promotes weight loss and may reduce risk factors linked to heart disease, including diabetes, high blood pressure, and unhealthy blood lipid levels.
“However, we are currently unsure about how well this diet works over the long term,”says Dr. Rim, noting that there are just two long-term studies of intermittent fasting, each lasting a year. Nor are there large populations of people who’ve followed this eating pattern for years. That’s in contrast to two other diets linked to a healthy heart and healthy body size—the Mediterranean diet and a vegetarian diet.
Some experts add that intermittent fasting diets typically don’t specify what foods you should eat. ”As a nutritional epidemiologist, that makes me a little uncomfortable,“ Dr. David Mushen admits. Eating burgers and French fries five days a week and a single breakfast sandwich on your low-calorie day wouldn’t be-healthy, he says. But with any diet, it’s often a good idea to ease into the changes. You could start by trying a 5:2 diet or time-resisted eating. Once you start losing weight, you can gradually introduce more healthy foods, he suggests.
12. The underlined word“pitfalls”in the first paragraph means
A. problems B. procedures
C. Alternatives D. assumptions
13. Why does Rim mention the Mediterranean diet?
A. To demonstrate the appropriate approach to dieting.
B. To show uncertainty about the effect of the new trend.
C. To illustrate the popularity of low-calorie eating patterns.
D. To stress the importance of a healthy heart and body size.
14. What does Dr. David Mushen suggest?
A. Giving priority lo nutrition.
B. Conducting further research.
C. Losing weight step by step.
D. Proceeding with extreme caution.
15. What might be the best title for the text?
A. Ready to Restrict Your Dict?
B. Time to Try Intermittent Fasting
C. What’s Wrong with Intermittent Fasting
D. How Different Weight-loss Methods Work?
A 13. B 14. C 15. B
根据第一段划线词后句子“Low-calorie diets often leave you tired and hungry. Low-fat diets are also tough to follow and, contrary to popular belief, they do not seem to prevent heart disease(低热量饮食通常会让你又累又饿。低脂饮食也很难遵循,而且与普遍的看法相反,它们似乎并不能预防心脏病)”可知其为减肥那些“坑”,故选A项。
【13题详解】
推理判断题。根据第四段最后一句“That’s in contrast to two other diets linked to a healthy heart and healthy body size—the Mediterranean diet and a vegetarian diet.(这与另外两种与健康心脏和健康体型有关的饮食形成了对比——地中海饮食和素食死亡)”可知,新的节食风尚缺少长期的可靠实验数据和大量实践人群,与“the Mediterranean diet and a vegetarian diet(地中海饮食和素食)” 这两种节食法形成对比,因此,提到其它被证实有效的节食法是为了进一步体现新的节食法缺少可靠实验数据支撑其有效性,故选B项。
David Mushen提到“it’s often a good idea to ease into the changes(慢慢地进行改变通常是个好主意)”和“gradually introduce more healthy foods(逐步引入更多的健康食品)”可知C项:Losing weight step by step.

As a student, you have a lot of freedom when it comes to how you spend your time. But with that freedom comes the responsibility to make the most of your studying hours. Here are some tips to help you do just that.
• Create a schedule
This means setting aside specific times for studying each day and then sticking to that schedule as closely as possible. Of course, there will be days when things come up, and you have to deviate from your plan. ____16____.
• Break up your study sessions into smaller periods
Our brain can’t focus effectively for a longtime. If you try to study for several hours once, chances are much higher that you won’t remember all of the information you’re trying to learn. ____17____.
• Find a study place that works for you
____18____ Some people prefer to study in complete silence, while others find that some background noise helps them focus better. There is no right or wrong answer here — it’s all about finding a place to study that allows you to work as efficiently as possible.
• ____19____
This will not only help you check your understanding of the concepts but also identify any area that may need more review. And once you know what specific topics or ideas you need to work on, it will be much easier for you to direct your study sessions accordingly and make better use of your time overall.
• Don’t be afraid to ask for help
If you find that you’re struggling to understand the material or just not making progress as quickly as you’d like, seek assistance in time. ____20____. In fact, it can save lots of time in the long run by getting you the support you need.
A. Take relevant tests
B. Learn to accept failure
C. There is no shame in admitting that you need assistance
D. Make sure that every minute you spend studying counts
E. However, try not to go off-track too often or for too long
F. Where you study can also affect how effectively you use your time
G. Instead, divide your study sessions up into shorter periods to help you relax and recharge

由上文“This means setting aside specific times for studying each day and then sticking to that schedule as closely as possible. Of course, there will be days when things come up, and you have to deviate from your plan.(这意味着每天要留出特定的学习时间,然后尽可能严格地遵守这个时间表。当然,总有一天事情会发生,你不得不偏离你的计划)”可知,上文讲有时我们会因为临时事情偏离计划,E项中go off-track和上文deviate from your plan对应。故E选项“然而,尽量不要太频繁或太长时间偏离轨道”符合语境,故选E。
【17题详解】
根据本段小标题“• Break up your study sessions into smaller periods(•把你的学习过程分成更小的阶段)”及本段所述内容“Our brain can’t focus effectively for a longtime. If you try to study for several hours once, chances are much higher that you won’t remember all of the information you’re trying to learn.(我们的大脑无法长时间有效地集中注意力。如果你试着一次学习几个小时,你很有可能记不住你想学的所有信息)”可知,本段主要讨论为了提高学习效率,可以将学习时间分成若千个时段以便能高效学习,故G选项“相反,把你的学习过程分成更短的时间段来帮助你放松和充电”符合语境,故选G。
【18题详解】
由后文“Some people prefer to study in complete silence, while others find that some background noise helps them focus better. There is no right or wrong answer here — it’s all about finding a place to study that allows you to work as efficiently as possible.(有些人喜欢在完全安静的环境中学习,而另一些人则发现一些背景噪音可以帮助他们更好地集中注意力。这里没有正确或错误的答案——关键是要找到一个能让你尽可能高效工作的学习场所)”可知,这段主要讲找一个学习的地方,F选项中Where和小标题中place对应,且本句有启下作用。故F选项“学习地点也会影响你如何有效利用时间”符合语境,故选F。
【19题详解】
根据本段内容“This will not only help you check your understanding of the concepts but also identify any area that may need more review. And once you know what specific topics or ideas you need to work on, it will be much easier for you to direct your study sessions accordingly and make better use of your time overall.(这不仅可以帮助你检查你对概念的理解,还可以确定任何可能需要更多复习的地方。一旦你知道了你需要学习的具体主题或想法,你就会更容易相应地指导你的学习过程,更好地利用你的时间)”可知,本段主要讲述这不仅可以检查所学的概念而且可以知道尚需温习的内容,知晓了需要继续学习的话题或思想后就可以引导你进行相应的学习以提高时间利用率,由此可推知A项Take relevant tests 可以概括全文内容。故A选项“进行相关测试”符合语境,故选A。
【20题详解】
由上文“If you find that you’re struggling to understand the material or just not making progress as quickly as you’d like, seek assistance in time.(如果你发现你在努力理解材料,或者只是没有像你希望的那样快速进步,及时寻求帮助)”可知,遇到困难要及时寻求帮助,下文“In fact, it can save lots of time in the long run by getting you the support you need.(事实上,从长远来看,它可以通过为你提供所需的支持来节省大量时间)”讲获得需要的帮助可以节约许多时间,故C选项“承认你需要帮助并不可耻”符合语境,故选C。

My dad was a nice man who didn’t talk too much. He used to work as a mechanic fixing army planes, but he was sent back after getting injured. Later, he opened a garage with his friend, who sold it behind his back. People took advantage of him, but he just couldn't turn down a favor.
That’s why I felt more than a little confused when a policeman called my office, asking me to pick him up at the station. The old man was found walking alone along the high way. When a police patrol car stopped him, he explained that he was travelling to Nabraska to claim his million dollars.
“What million dollars?” I asked Dad, who was sitting quietly in the passengers’ seat as we drove home.
Dad took out a wrinkled letter and read, “We are now authorized to pay one million dollars to Woodrow T. Grant of Billings, Montana.”
I never knew dad wanted to be a millionaire. I asked him what he would do with the prize money, to which he replied that he wanted a new truck. His driver’s license has expired fifteen years ago when he reached his seventies.
I knew that the letter was a scam, but the old man was as stubborn as a mule. He even slept with that stupid letter in his hand. He memorized it word for word. I didn’t think he could memorize anything anymore. He wouldn’t stay at home either, but ventured out onto the highway again and again, until the police sent him back. In the end, I had to give up. I called in sick at work and the two of us set out in my car to claim his prize.
We travelled past several states. Dad remained silent, while I found it hard to control my temper. Finally, I decided to ask the question. “Why on earth do you need a million dollars for a stupid truck?” Dad replied, “The rest is for you. I wanted to leave you something.” His words rendered me speechless.
注意:
1. 续写字数应为150左右;
The following day, we arrived at our destination.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
On our way back, we stopped at a truck-dealer’s.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
The following day, we arrived at our destination. What I had foreseen happened: it was a complete trick/cheat. There was no prize money at all. Dad’s dream of becoming a millionaire was already broken. The hot weather in Nebraska had crept upon us unawares, and the atmosphere hung heavy over my leaden heart. As for Dad, this bad news seemed to have overpowered him. He leaned his head on his hand like a downhearted old horse bowing beneath the violence of the storm. Looking at my crestfallen father, I made a solution to myself.
On our way back, we stopped at a truck-dealer’s. I walked my Dad to his favorite pickup truck. Looking at the truck, my Dad wore an expression of pleasant surprise on his face. I told him that we would finish our trip in this truck because he had already got the best prize---me, his beloved son. He burst out laughing and gave me a hug. A sudden shower of rain drove the hot sun away and the dull air changed into a fitful breeze. We drove home in our new truck, laughing and talking like the old days.
