Vocabulary:
Give students a handout with vocabulary related to disaster and hope (e.g. earthquake, hurricane, flood, rescue, relief, recovery, etc.). Go over the definitions of the words with the class, and ask students to give examples of each word in a real-life disaster situation.
Discussion:
Give students a handout with discussion questions about natural disasters (e.g. "What are the effects of natural disasters on people and the environment?" "What can individuals and governments do to prepare for and respond to disasters?" "What is the role of international aid in disaster relief?"). Break the class into small groups and have them discuss the questions together.
Essay Planning:
Explain to the class that they will be writing an essay about disaster and hope. Give them a prompt (e.g. "Write about a time when a natural disaster affected you or someone you know, and how hope played a role in the recovery process"). Have students brainstorm ideas for their essay in small groups, and then have each group share their ideas with the class.

Review the key points covered in the lesson, and remind students of the assignment (i.e. writing an essay about disaster and hope). Encourage them to continue thinking about their ideas and to start drafting their essay as soon as possible.
