With a history of more than 2,000 years, Dragon Boat Festival, is one of the most important traditional festivals in China, falling on 5th day of the 5th month in Chinese lunar calendar.
The dragon boat race may be the highlight of the day, but eating zongzi is a close second.
Zongzi are made from sticky rice wrapped in bamboo leaves. The fillings for Zongzi are beyond imagination, meat, dried dates and salted egg yolks are among the most popular choices.
But behind the festive atmosphere, there is a sad story. The festival is held in memory of the great poet Qu Yuan. During the holiday, people also make perfume sachets(香包)which are made of cloth, ribbon or paper with traditional Chinese medicine inside. They can bring good luck and fight off bad spirits and insects.
Today, Dragon Boat Festival in the Chinese people is still a very popular festival. Country paid attention to the protection of intangible cultural heritage(非物质文化遗产). On May 20, 2006, the State Council approved the inclusion of the folk first batch of national intangible cultural heritage.

With a history of more than 1,000 years, tie-dye(扎染)is a very old way of dyeing clothes in China, most popular in Yunnan. During the Tang and Song dynasties, people gave tie-dyed clothes to the emperors as gifts. In 2006, the tie-dye technique was added to China’s national intangible cultural heritage(非物质文化遗产)list. Anning in Yunnan is known for tie-dye.
Yang Cheng, 52, is the inheritor(传承人)of tie-dye in Anning. He learned the skills from his mother in the 1980s. And he has passed it down to his daughter.
“Tie-dye is worthy of the efforts of generations(代)of people,” Yang said. Yang has mastered all the old skills of tie-dye. To tie-dye, you first need to use threads(线)to tie your cloth together. Then you put the cloth into the dye. As the cloth is folded and dyed, some parts become dark blue, while other parts have a brighter color. When you unfold the cloth, you’ll see beautiful patterns.
At the same time, Yang has studied tie-dye in other countries, such as Japan, India and France. He also tries to make some creative designs. Now, Yang teaches tie-dye in schools, communities and companies. More than 100,000 people have learned from him.
Some might worry that tie-dye will be replaced by machinery dyeing. But Yang is confident. “At the end of the day, machines can’t replace our creative hands.” Yang said.

Cars powered by gasoline (汽油) were sold for many years before cars that use electricity. Car companies are now making cars that are fully powered by electricity only. How do these electric cars measure up to traditional gasoline cars?
Electric and gasoline cars look similar on the outside. They have very different parts under their hoods (引擎盖), though. Electric cars have one main moving part: the motor. But gasoline cars have hundreds of parts, often requiring frequent maintenance (保养). Having fewer parts makes the electric car cheaper to maintain and less likely to have mechanical (机械的) problems.
Electric cars are energy efficient (高效的), also making them cheaper to operate. It costs about $1.00 to travel 43 miles in an electric car. But it costs about $1.25 to go 18 miles in a gasoline car. Basically, an electric car can go twice as far as a gas car for the same price.
Electric cars do not have tailpipe emissions (尾气排放), making them more friendly to the environment, too.
While some details make electric cars seem attractive, other details aren’t as favourable. For example, some electric cars can travel only 60 to 120 miles on a full charge (充电). Most gas cars can drive hundreds of miles on a full tank (油箱).
There are certainly advantages to both electric cars and gasoline cars. It’s good to know that there is a choice.
    Electric Cars VS Gasoline Cars
    Introduction
With the appearance of electric cars, people wonder whether electric cars can achieve the same standards as gasoline cars.
    ____16____
Electric cars and gasoline cars look similar on the outside.
    Differences
Electric cars: Having fewer parts reduces the cost of their maintenance and the ____17____ of having mechanical problems.
____18____ with gasoline cars, electric cars are more energy saving, making them cheaper to operate.
Having no tailpipe emissions, they are more environmentally ____19____.
    Gasoline cars:
Gas cars can cover a ____20____ distance on a full tank than electric cars on a full charge.
    Conclusion
Both electric cars and gasoline cars have their own advantages, which provides people with a choice.

On the other hand, small handwriting may mean that you’re shy and careful, and always pay attention to-details. Medium-sized handwriting shows that it is not hard for you to get used to a new environment.
    Spacing between words
Do you leave a large space between your words when you write? According to a study, the distance between two words can show how close or how far you feel towards others. If you write with wide spacing between your words, it may mean that you enjoy your freedom. On the other hand, people leaving narrow spacing between words may like staying with others.
    Slant (倾斜) of the words
Did you know that the slant in your handwriting can tell how you treat people and things around you? Slanting to the right means you welcome or accept new ideas easily. And you think of your friends and family are more important than anything else. While slanting to the left may show that you think deeply about your own thoughts, feelings or behaviors. And you are likely to work behind the scenes better. If you write without slanting at all, you may be practical.

For middle and primary school students, being able to cook has become a must. They will also need to learn how to plant vegetables, raise poultry (家禽) and maintain home appliances under new requirement, for labor education.
The Ministry of Education (MOE) brought out a new standard for labor education in schools last year. Starting from the 2022 fall semester, students in primary and middle schools have to take courses on labor skills at least once a week. Labor education helps students value hard work. It includes things like household chores (家务), on-campus labor and community volunteer services.
The new standard includes three types of labor tasks. The first is for things like everyday chores, including cleaning, organizing, cooking, and using and maintaining home appliances. Next is productive labor, including agriculture, making traditional handicrafts, and applying new technologies such as 3D printing and laser cutting. The third type is service work, which includes volunteer work.
Schools in China have traditionally placed more focus on studying, and many have seen household chores as a waste of children’s time. But according to the MOE, labor education must be built up to help students cultivate (培养) social values and develop an interest in labor.
Online, people have been busy discussing the new standards on social media.
Liu Fang, a mother of 6-year-old twins in Beijing, strongly supports labor education. For the past year, she has trained her daughters to do household chores and make simple dishes for the family.
“The main idea is to let them share responsibility as family members and become independent as early as they can,” said Liu. “Through doing housework, their hand-eye coordination (协调), time management and organization skills can be trained and it’s also good to help them relax.” Through such education, Liu said her twins have found pleasure when doing chores and are more independent.

The Mars rover (探测器) Zhurong has traveled more than 1. 9 km since it first set its wheels on the surface of the planet in May the year before last year. The lastest information was reported by the Chinese space administration.
Since May last year, Zhurong has worked on the surface of Mars for 342 Martian days at a distance of 240 million kilometers from Earth. A Martian day is about 40 minutes longer than a day on Earth.
Zhurong touched down on the Utopia Planita, a huge plain in the northern half of Mars,
on May 15, 2021. Since then, it has collected surface rock samples (样品) and taken pictures while exploring the planet.
Mars is about to enter the winter season, during which night temperatures will drop to -100, with a high probability of sandstorms. Martian winters last about six Earth months. Scientists have made special designs on the Zhurong rover, including low temperature resistance (阻力) , sand resistance, power safety and other features, to make sure that the rover can work safely on the Mars.
The Chinese space administration also reported that lunar (月球) rover Yutu-2, or Jade rabbit-2, has been working for 42 lunar days and moved 1,181 meters on the moon surface.
China’s Chang’e-4 rover with a lander, and Yutu-2 were sent off on December 8, 2018. They made the first-ever soft landing on the Von Karman Crater in the South Pole-Aitken Basin on the far side of the moon on January 3, 2019.

(2023·江苏扬州·统考一模)After some more time had passed, it was time for the trial of Muff Potter for the murder of Dr. Robinson in the graveyard. Tom found Huckleberry Finn.
“Huck, have you told anyone what we saw?”
    “Of course not !”
“I feel sorry for Muff sometimes. He didn’t kill Dr. Robinson, but I think they will hang him.”
“I do too, Tom. He never hurts anybody and he taught me how to fish.”
“He fixed my kite once. Maybe we could help him escape.”
    “They’d only catch him again.”
    “That’s true.”
They went to the jail and brought Muff Potter some tobacco and matches.
“Thanks, boys. You have been very kind to me. Nobody else is kind to me. Let me shake your hands. They’re only little hands, but they helped me a lot.”
Tom went home, feeling very bad.

The expired (过期的) meat news has seriously cut down the sales and name of western fast food in China. But Arthur Han, an office worker, says that now is the best time to eat at McDonald’s in China because they are paying more attention to food safety at the moment.
Mr Han says he hardly ever eats at McDonald’s, whose image (形象) for cleanliness and quality was shaken last month by a television report. It showed McDonald’s and several other western fast-food companies of using a supplier (供应商) that sold expired meat.
McDonald’s said this month something worst happened. Shanghai government closed down the factory of Shanghai Husi Food Co., which was the supplier of McDonald’s. It badly influenced the sales of McDonald’s.
Yum said its brands KFC and Pizza Hut also saw sales drop at first, adding that if the falling continues, it could have a really bad effect. But experts say that, whatever the effect on western brands, it is difficult for local companies to do better in fast food production.
“Food safety is not just something that affects McDonald’s and KFC, they are just the biggest problem for all the food companies,” says Torsten Stocker, an officer from a famous food company. “If it’s a problem they are facing, why would others be any different?”
“Many diners (就餐者) seem to realize that western brands are not the only ones with a problem,” Wang Lan, a young office worker, eating lunch at a local fast-food, said this week. As for food safety, he said the best way was not to pay attention to it.

China’s chip industry has developed quickly in recent years. You may find it is surprising, but it’s true. China’s imports (出口) of the chips are even bigger in worth than that of oil. The former was worth up to 410 billion dollars, but while there was 250 billion in 2021. NY, Bloomberg news (澎博新闻) Being key to everything electrical, chips (芯片) are needed around the world. However, it’s not easy to make them. A chip may cross national boundaries (国界) many times during the production cycle.
China’s Taiwan and South Korea, for example, play important roles in manufacturing (制造), while other East Asian countries are working on assembling (集成), testing and packaging.
Currently, most of the world’s chips are made in China, while the US is the second biggest producer, CNBC reported. South Korea, Singapore, Malaysia, Japan, Germany, the Philippines, the Netherlands, and Thailand are further big manufacturers. Especially, China’s Taiwan leads the way in making the chips. Their companies, TSMC (台湾积体电路制造公司), and UMC (联华电子公司), are two of the major names in the business, producing chips for some of the biggest tech companies in the world, including Apple and AMD.As of December 2021, TSMC alone provided 54 percent of the world’s semiconductor chips.
China has already developed some influential chip companies, including Allwinners (全志科技), Semiconductor Manufacturing International Corporation (SMIC, 中芯国际), and HiSilicon (海思) which is a subsidiary (子公司) of Huawei.
In chip designing, China has done well in the mid-and low-end market, while China’s designing of more advanced chips still fall behind some developed countries. Besides advanced technology, China is also expanding its production capacity (产能). As of now, only 30 percent of the chips China uses are produced within the country. China plans to raise the rate to 70 percent by 2025 The Chinese government has also done a lot to boost (推动) the country’s chip industry. The 14th Five-Year Plan listed semiconductors and artificial intelligence as two pillars (支柱)?
For future technology development in the next five years, China then announced (宣布) plans to invest (投资) 1.4 trillion dollars (about 9.77 trillion yuan) between 2020 and 2025 in advanced technologies including but not limited to (局限于) semiconductors.

    (2023·上海闵行·统考二模)根据短文内容回答下列问题。

Paddling (用桨划船)a dragon boat is no piece of cake. Besides the key time required to be part of a team, it’s a full-body exercise. When I joined a team, they told me it took at least three years to become a good paddler. There’s so much to remember: correct posture and movement as well as team synchronization(同步,同时性)are necessary for a team’s success.
Dragon boat racing is a well-honored tradition in China and the highlight of the Dragon Boat Festival. However, because of the pandemic (疫情), last year’ s races were put off from June to October. For the first time, Taipei’s dragon boat championships were held during the October holiday,
Our team knew racing conditions on the river would be different in October, but we had no idea how different they would be. A nearby typhoon brought in the fierce winds and big waves on the river. With about 40 teams participating, I didn’t expect our team to go very far. This was the first competition for most of us. And only the top two finishers in each group would advance to the next round.
Simply getting to the race’s starting point for our first group was a challenge. The big waves threatened to flip(翻转)us over. Paddling against wave was tough, but we crossed the finish line and surprisingly, advanced to the second round.
The next day, there was no shortage of accidents. Boats flipped over and others lost control and weren’t able to finish their races. In our final race that day, we narrowly advanced to the following day’s semifinals.
We faced strong competitors in the semifinals, including a semiprofessional team. Being held back by their boat’s waves was highly frustrating. However, in dragon boat racing, no one ever stops paddling, no matter what! So I kept paddling working my hardest to keep pace with the team. We trailed the other boats, but we didn’t lose hope. In the final push, filled with both excitement and exhaustion, we persisted and advanced to the finals!
Although we had expectations, never did we imagine we’d make it into the top three. How come? Let me tell you! To win a dragon boat race, you need three things:
    6 , 6 and 6 .
86.Paddling a dragon boat is easy, isn’t it?
    ________, _______________.
87.According to the team mates, how long did it take to become a good paddler?
    _____________________________________________
88.Why were the races put off last year?
    _____________________________________________
89.How did the writer feel when they advanced to the second round?
    _____________________________________________
90.What do you think of the writer’s semifinal race?
    _____________________________________________
91.What can be filled in the blanks in the last paragraph?
To win a dragon boat race, you need three things: ________, ________and ________.
