阅读下列短文,从每题所给的A、B、C、D四个选项中选出最佳选项。

In recent times, the sales of self-help books have soared in popularity. Here are our picks of the best, and most highly rated self-help books to help tackle that new year anxiety.
Atomic Habits by James Clear
Nowadays people spend so much time planning, journaling, and writing in our diaries, rather than taking action towards actually achieving our goals. This book is a step-by-step guide to fixing up your routine. It digs into the psychology behind habits — how to form good ones and break the bad ones. If you’re a victim of procrastination (拖延症), this may be the push you need.
How to Win Friends and Influence People by Dale Carnegie
This book is all about improving the relationships you have with others in your life, making you a better listener, and overall a better friend. With simple tips such as including the person’s name in conversation and making sure you’re genuinely interested in what they’re saying, you can ensure they will remember you. The core idea is that you can change other people’s behaviour by changing your own, therefore building stronger relationships.
Untamed-Stop Pleasing, Start Living by Glennon Doyle
Part autobiographical and part self-help, it’s the perfect book to kickstart your year and start living for yourself. Although this book could be enjoyed by anyone, the prime audience is women, as Doyle talks a lot about doubts during motherhood, and the overwhelming need women feel to put everyone before themselves. Doyle shows us our lives in a new light that without even realising it, we may be working hard to please everyone around us, forgetting the most important person — ourselves.
The 4-Hour Work Week by Timothy Ferriss
“Escape the 9-5, live anywhere and join the new rich”. This best seller proposes the idea that you don’t need to wait for retirement and delay your life plan. Instead, you can trade a long career for short work bursts and frequent “mini-retirements”. Ferris says that people don’t want to be millionaires. They want to experience what they think only millionaires can buy.
21.What can we learn from Atomic Habits?
A.How to keep a diary.
B.How to learn psychology.
C.How to arrange your routine.
D.How to satisfy your needs.
22.Which book may attract housewives most?

B.Idle young, needy old.
C.Live in the moment.
D.Fortune favors the bold.

A Swedish company training crows to pick up litter in exchange for food, claims that its program could save communities a fortune in cleaning costs.
Teaching humans not to throw cigarette butts on the street has so far proven impossible, but a Swedish company claims it can teach crows to pick up after us and save local communities millions of dollars in cleaning fees every year. It teaches wild crows to do our dirty work through a step-by-step learning process by rewarding the birds with food for every cigarette butt they collect.
“They are easier to teach and there is also a higher chance of them learning from each other. At the same time, there’s a lower risk of them mistakenly eating any rubbish,” company founder, Hanssen, said. “They’re wild birds taking part in on a voluntary basis.”
Crows are among the smartest birds on Earth, and such training programs have proven successful several times in recent years. In fact, the company is so confident it can pull it off that it has expressed interest in testing it in on a larger scale, in the town of Södertälje.
Hanssen believes that the initiative could save the municipality(自治市)at least 75% of the costs involved with picking up cigarette butts, depending on how hard the crows work. If it proves successful, the company hopes that it will provide a permanent cleaning solution that can be used in other parts of the country and eventually nationwide.
The approach to litter cleaning has gotten positive feedback online, but there are those who think the fact that we can train crows to pick up cigarette bults, but we can’t get humans not to throw them away is hard to accept. Plus, there are the health problems of constantly exposing the birds to the cigarette butts.
24.What is the advantage of the program?
A.It can save food. B.It can save money.
C.It helps protect birds. D.It helps change people’s bad behavior.
25.Why are crows chosen for the program?
A.They have a strong ability to learn. B.They have a strong sense of smell.
C.They are good at collecting rubbish. D.They are in large numbers in Sweden.
26.What can we know from the last two paragraphs?
A.Only a few people support the program.
B.The program can do harm to the crows.
C.The company can get a fortune from the program.
D.The program has served as a cleaning solution nationwide.
27.What can be the best title for the text?
A.Crows Learn to Exchange Food B.Crows Are Good at Collecting Litter
C.Crows Are Trained to Pick Up Litter D.Crows Begin to Feed on Cigarette Butts

The climate crisis may lead the human race to shrink in size, as mammals with smaller frames appear better able to deal with rising global temperatures, a leading fossil expert has said.
Prof Steve Brusatte, a palaeontologist (古生物学家) at the University of Edinburgh, suggested the way other mammals have previously responded to periods of climate change could offer an insight into humans’ future.
He described the potential plight (境况,困境) of people as similar to that of early horses, which became smaller in body size as temperatures rose around 55m years ago.
Writing in The Rise and Reign of the Mammals, Brusatte notes that animals in warmer parts of the world today are often smaller than those in colder areas, an ecological principle known as Bergmann’s rule. “The reasons are not entirely understood, but it is probably, in part, because smaller animals have a higher surface area relative to their volume than plumper animals and can thus better shed (去除) excess heat,” he writes.
Brusatte said that becoming smaller was “a common way that mammals deal with climate change”. He added: “That’s not to say every species of mammal would get smaller, but it seems to be a common survival trick of mammals when temperatures spike pretty quickly, which does raise the question: if temperatures do spike really quickly, might humans get smaller? And I think that’s certainly reasonable.
In a recent study, researchers studying human remains over the past million years have also suggested that temperature is a major predictor of body size variation, while scientists studying red deer have said that warmer winters in northern Europe and Scandinavia may lead to the body size of these animals becoming smaller.
However, not all experts agree that rising temperature causes mammals to shrink. Prof Adrian Lister, of the Natural History Museum in London, said the relationship shown by the recent human remains study is weak, while the strong correlations between temperature and mammal body size may often be down to the availability of food and resources.
Lister is also sceptical that humans will shrink as the climate heats. “We are not really controlled by natural selection,” he said. “If that was going to happen, you’d need to find large people dying before they could reproduce because of climate warming. That is not happening in today’s world. We wear clothes, we have got heating, and we have got air conditioning if it is too hot.”
28.According to Brusatte, early horses got smaller in body size in order to
A.keep warm B.avoid hunters C.stay cool D.keep balance
29.What does the underlined word “spike” probably mean?
A.Fall. B.Go up. C.Remain steady. D.Change.
30.What is the author’s attitude towards the new finding?
A.Objective. B.Indifferent. C.Confused. D.Positive.
31.What’s the author’s purpose of writing the text?
A.To demonstrate the relationship between nature and people’s lifestyle.
B.To cast light on the potential impact of changed mammal body size.
C.To introduce the correlations between climate change and human body size.
D.To warn people of the survival crisis mammals are faced with.

There is no doubt, when you received the praise, you felt good—and when you received the criticism , you felt upset and wanted to reject it. Clearly, we don’t want to be seen as failures, so we’d rather shut our eyes and cover our ears than have to take any criticisms from others.
However, by doing our best to avoid being criticized, we allow ourselves to travel on a never-ending highway of mediocrity (平康). Without receiving negative feedback and criticisms from others, our growth stopped and our opportunities disappeared. Launched in 210, the Microsoft KIN smartphone only lasted on the market for 48 days despite its $ 1 billion development and marketing costs. It was only after the phone went on sale that it became quite obvious that most 15 to 30-year-olds preferred Androids, BlackBerrys and iphones to the Microsoft KIN. If criticism and feedback had been received by the developing group while the phone was in development, Microsoft could have avoided the huge embarrassment and financial loss that occurred.
Just to be clear, I’m talking about constructive criticism. Feedback that helps to make you stronger. If you always think you’re right but don’t get feedback from anyone else, how do you know for sure that what you’re doing is any good? Listening and acting on honest views will tell you exactly what you’re doing well-and what you can do better. This type of feedback forces you to evaluate your actions and the way you work. If you use constructive criticism wisely, it can guide you away from bad practices and move you towards good ones.
The trouble with most of us is that we would rather be ruined by praise than saved by criticism. Fortunately, you now have the keys to help you move away from seeking praise—to instead, seeking constructive criticism. And once you start putting these keys to use, you’ll unlock the doors to a whole new way of learning, developing and succeeding.
32.What does the first paragraph express?
A.The responses to positive and negative comments.
B.The true feelings of being praised or criticized.
C.The differences between praise and criticism.
D.The benefits of taking criticisms from others.
33.What lesson can we learn from the Microsoft KIN smartphone?
A.Too much money for developing is not a good thing.
B.Well preparation is an effective way to deal with problem.
C.Early criticism is necessary for future success.
D.Good opportunity is an important part in our growth.
34.What benefit can we get after receiving others’ feedback?
A.Giving us more confidence. B.Making us more cautious.
C.Encouraging us a lot. D.Making us better.
35.What is the main idea of the text?
A.How criticism makes people upset. B.When criticism and praise take effect.
C.Who need criticism instead of praise. D.Why criticism is better than praise.

An A for Mrs. B
I was sitting next to Missy in my ninth-grade world history class when Mrs. Bartlett announced a new project. In groups, we were to create a newspaper around the culture we were studying.
On a piece of paper, we wrote the names of three friends we wanted in our group. After collecting all the requests, Mrs. B.informed us that she would take into consideration the names we chose and would let us know the results the next day. I had no doubt I would get the group of my choice. Only a few people behaved normally in the class, and Missy was one of them. I knew we had chosen each other.
The next day, I anxiously waited for the class. After the bell rang, Missy and I stopped talking as Mrs. B called for our attention. She started to call out names. When she reached group three, Missy’s name was called. So, I’m in group three,I thought. The second, third and fourth members of the group were called. My name was not included. There had to be some mistake!
Then I heard it. The last group: “Mauro, Juliette, Rachel, Karina.” I could feel the tears well in my eyes. How could I face being in that group—the boy who rarely spoke English, the one girl who was always covered by skirts that went down to her ankles, and the other girl who wore weird clothes. Oh, how badly I wanted to be with my friends.
I fought back tears as I walked up to Mrs. B.She looked at me and knew what I was there for. I was determined to convince her I should be in the “good” group. “Why. . . ?” I started.
She gently placed a hand on my shoulder. “I know what you want, Karina,” she said, “but your group needs you. I need you to help them get a passing grade on this assignment. Only you can help them.”
I was stunned. I was confused. I was amazed. She had seen something in me I hadn’t seen.
“Will you help them?” she asked.
I stood straighter. “Yes,” I replied. I couldn’t believe it came out of my mouth, but it did. I had committed.
