My favourite Books
—Posted by Catherine Chung. a great writer
Stories of Your Life and Others by Ted Chiang
This collection contains several maths stories. The one I recommend is Division By Zero, about Jane Parkinson, a brilliant German mathematician. To her great despair, she ends up proving that mathematics is inconsistent and is able to prove that any two numbers are equal. A beautiful, thought-provoking(发人深省的)story about belief, understanding, and faith.
The Housekeeper and the Professor by Yoko Ogawa
It's about a woman who comes to work for a once-great mathematician. Due to a brain injury, he has only 80 minutes of short-term memory available to him before he forgets everything. It is filled with beautiful maths, simply and clearly described alongside finely drawn relationships between the characters.
Too Much Happiness by Alice Munro
Kovalevskaya was a 19th-century mathematician at a time when women were not allowed in most of Europe to attend university. She married a man who promised to take her to Germany to study. She made major contributions to the field and became the first woman in Russia to obtain a doctorate in mathematics.
The Ore Miner's Wife by Karl Iagnemma
It is about a miner who thinks he's discovered the proof to the problem: construct a square, equal in area to a given circle. His wife, not knowing what has suddenly taken his attention and his time, fears he is being unfaithful. A moving exploration of the joys of entering a problem whole and the desire and impossibility of truly knowing those we love.

C. Jane Parkinson. D. Yoko Ogawa.

A. They tell love stories. B. They involve mathematics.
C. They explore human relationship. D. They reveal people's inner world.

One night many years ago when I was on the bridge of a ship that passed one of our large cities on a quiet night, I saw its lights reflected in the sky and heard the rumblings of the city's noises. As I looked to my other side, I could see nothing but open space of darkness and endless water. I realized how small I was and that my own problems of life did not seem great.
I have spent twenty—five years on boats. Now I am a docking pilot. My job is to bring in the large luxury liners and stay with them until they are safely anchored in their berths. Sometimes this requires two tugs(拖船), sometimes many more, depending on the tide, the weather, and the draft of the vessel.
Most of you no doubt have seen these tugs pushing and pulling at the big liners. What they are doing doesn't seem to make much sense at first, but presently the big boat is alongside her landing stage, her ropes made fast, and the job is done.
These tugs, whether one or ten, move about in accord with whistle signals I send them from the bridge of the big liner. These signals make up a language that is just as dependable as the spoken word; or even more so, because our docking signals are rarely misunderstood. The captain of each tug does his work according to the signals he receives. He never asks questions. He takes everything on faith, and it always works out.
I fell very important the first time I ever docked a big liner, thinking that I was in control of a great ship worth millions of dollars and the owners were depending on me to bring her safely to her berth. After I had docked several of the large liners, I realized I was not important, but simply the quarterback who called the signals.
Working around tugboats has had its effect on what I believe. The great transatlantic liners depend on the help of the little tugs to bring them safely to port, and it is with one's success.
24. According to paragraph 3, originally, the job of a tugboat was .
A. important B. humble
C. tough D. complex
25. What is the main purpose of writing paragraph 4?
A. To give a detailed description. B. To display the characteristics.
C. To make a comparison. D. To help reveal the theme.
26. According to the passage, one's success depends on .
A. diligence B. mutual assistance
C. learning D. individual excellence
27. Which of the following can be the best title of the passage?
A. Tugboats and the Pilot B. The Significance of Teamwork
C. The Workings of Tugboats D. Philosophy from Tugboats
C
I remember when Kamala Harris became Joe Biden's running mate. It seemed funny how many people pronounced her name incorrectly. On one occasion, a news host became upset when being corrected, and purposely called her Kumbaya.
I am no stranger to this issue as many of my students are from Asian and Middle Eastern countries, and sometimes their names are difficult for me to pronounce, even after asking them how to say it. Many students seem unwilling to correct me when I attempt to learn their names correctly. The other thing I’ve seen in growing numbers is students “adopting” an English name.
It's much more common than many think, for people to change their names in order to fit in.
This is especially the case when it comes to seeking jobs. Racial and cultural minorities often attempt to avoid discrimination hiring by hiding racial cues on the resume including changing their name. This is referred to as “resume whitening”. Research shows almost 50 percent of black and Asian job applicants did so.
Xian Zhao from the University of Toronto researches ethnic (种族的) name pronunciation, saying that many people don’t understand that habitually pronouncing an unfamiliar name inaccurately is a form of indirect discrimination. It sends a message that “you are the minorities” says Zhao. “You are not important in this environment, so why should I take time and my effort to learn it?” On the other end, those with ethnic names frequently don’t correct people, even when their name is pronounced wrong repeatedly, feeling it is better just to keep the peace and not stand out for being difficult.
It is important to try to pronounce everyone’s name as they pronounce it. This communicates respect of them as a person and their culture. There is nothing wrong with asking someone to repeat their name so that you can learn to pronounce it properly. This is usually appreciated.
28. When their names are incorrectly pronounced, the author’s Asian students
A. attempt to laugh at it B. tend to accept it
C. offer to correct the author D. agree to change their names
29. Which of the following can be seen as “resume whitening”?
A. An application for a better job.
B. A change in work environment.
C. A ban on racial discrimination in workplace.
D. A practice of using Western names in job seeking.
30. In his research, Xian Zhao finds that
A. ethnics accept their names being mispronounced to save trouble
B. ethnics fight effectively with the discrimination against their names
C. many westerners pronounce ethnic names incorrectly on purpose
D. many westerners make efforts to pronounce ethnic names correctly
31. What’s the author’s attitude toward pronouncing ethnic names correctly?
A. Critical. B. Uncaring. C. Reserved. D. Supportive.
D
Next time you are struggling with the crossword, try putting the kettle on. Drinking a cup of tea can improve creativity, a study suggests.
Researchers gave men and women either tea or water and then asked them to complete a word association game, which was used to measure a form of creativity known as convergent thinking (聚合思维).
In the game, the participants were given sets of words such as “same, tennis, head” and asked to find a meaningful link between them. The answer, in this case, would be “match?”. After analysing the results in a way that ruled out the potential effects of a person’s intelligence and language ability, the researchers, from Peking University in China, found that those who drank the tea performed significantly better in the word association game. The tea drinkers scored an average of 13. 89 in the word association game compared with 12. 94 for water drinkers.
The researchers said it was not clear why tea has this beneficial effect. Tea contains caffeine and theanine, which can improve attention, but the 100 participants in the study drank only a small amount of tea—90ml, on average—and caried out the tests very soon after consuming it, meaning any effect would have been ignored. “This result showed that the tea drinking event itself—rather than the biological com-ponents of tea—played a positive role,” the researchers said.
“Previous research has found that people tend to associate tea drinking with a specific set of personality traits, such as smart, creative, elegant, confident, and stable. It may be that when participants are stimulated (刺激) by tea, the mental representation of a tea drinker is also activated, and they unconsciously think that they should be smarter and more creative,” they added, “Future research should focus on specific mechanisms (机制) and clarify which variables moderate the impact of tea consumption on convergent thinking.
32. What did the participants have to do in the study?
A Pair the words with each other.
B. Guess the meaning of the words.
C. Find a connection between the words.
D. Tell the differences among the words.
33. What helped a participant get a higher score according to the researchers?
A. The action of drinking tea itself.
B. The participant’s intelligence.
C. The participant’s language ability.
D. The biological components of tea.
34. What can be inferred from the previous research?
A. Drinking tea makes people more active.
B. Drinking tea is popular among the youth.
C. People tend to drink tea more than before.
D. People drinking tea are often thought smart.
35. Which of the following can be the best title of the text?
A. Drinking Tea Is Good for Health.
B. Drinking Tea Is A Popular Trend.
C. Drinking Tea Makes for Creativity.
D. Drinking Tea Matters A Lot in Life.

Have you ever had the pleasure of popping the small air-filled bubbles that make up a sheet of bubble wrap? ____36____ Have you ever wondered why popping them is so much fun?
It turns out that there is some science behind the human connection to bubble wrap. Some experts believe it’s similar to the need to fidget (动来动去). ____37____ These small actions are all types of fidgeting.
While some people think fidgeting is distracting, it’s actually been shown to increase attention span. ____38____ Similarly, a study revealed that people report feeling more alert after popping bubble wrap. ____39____ In other words, your brain is wired to enjoy it! Early humans had to be on their toes all the time. They needed to be ready to run from wild animals at a moment’s notice. Today, people spend a lot of time sitting, especially at school and at work. As a result, the body may build a lot of muscle tension from lack of movement. Popping bubble wrap helps relax that muscle tension. It reduces stress and anxiety.
In fact, studies have shown that, sometimes, the human brain receives feel-good chemicals like dopamine (多巴胺) after popping bubble wrap. ____40____

I've lived in this neighborhood for years, but I still remember the first person I met when I moved here, and she was Linda pho had black wavy hair, big naughty eyes and a smile on her face all the time. I think she was about ten when I first met her.
She was very fond of trees and spent all her spare time collecting leaves and sticking them on a brochure. She remembered exactly where she had picked up a particular leaf, on which day and whether it was a sunny, windy or rainy day. Because I was interested in seeing what she had collected, I was her best friend or sister, Belle.
Later, Linda went to a boarding school outside the town. She would come home only during vacations. That is to say, we couldn't see each other as often as we used to. But we would make full use of every opportunity to visit the small forest near our home to collect her favorite leaves, and meanwhile, I could listen to her wonderful descriptions of the trees.
You must be wondering why I am talking about Linda. You see, something fantastic happened last week. I was standing on the balcony looking at the budding blossoms of the trees. As usual, I remembered Linda whom I had not seen for many years. Two years ago, I got some information from an old neighbor about Linda. She had settled down in France and had a daughter. I wondered whether she still stuck to her hobby of collecting leaves. I was so lost in thought that I did not hear that the doorbell rang at first. Then it rang again and again. Two short rings, one long ring and two short rings. Suddenly it dawned on me that it was how Linda used to ring the bell. I ran to the door.
