You probably know who Marie Curie was, but you may not have heard of Rachel Carson. Of the outstanding ladies listed below, who do you think was the most important woman of the past 100 years?
Jane Addams(1860-1935)
Anyone who has ever been helped by a social worker has Jane Addams to thank. Addams helped the poor and worked for peace. When Sandra Day O’Connor finished third in her class at Stanford Law School, in 1952,she could not find work at a law firm because she was a woman. Rosa Parks(1913-2005)

For Italy, part of the challenge is to transform places like Colle di Tora, a small town outside Rome, which are not so much cut off from the modern world, as a little behind.
At the moment the post office-which the town’s 360 residents rely on to withdraw cash, as there is no bank-sometimes closes down because its Internet fails. Bad weather can interrupt the signal, and is also a problem for mobile phone reception and streaming TV services.
The last time a customer tried to pay by card in Anna Rita Pani’s grocery store, things got a bit awkward. They had to wait 15 minutes for the card reader to work.
Simona Cardella said her teenage daughter struggled with online lessons while schools were closed. Sometimes the audio was off, sometimes the video was off, and if the weather was bad, the signal was cut off completely.
Mayor Pandolfi notes that taking latest generation broadband(光纤宽带)to isolated(隔绝的)areas like Colle Di Tora could make them attractive locations for remote working. For other residents, it would just bring them into the 21st century. Pani’s 22-year-old son Nicolas is a keen gamer, but he complains it can take “four-five days” to download a game that his friends in Rome can get in a couple of hours.
Fortunately, Colle di Tora is on a government list of 200 cities for building the fibre optic broadband. This week, workers were laying fibre optic cables in one of the main squares, and telecoms company Open Fiber said super-fast Internet would be operational by the year’s end.
Nearly a quarter of Italians do not use the Internet, and one third of households have no fixed connection, according to figures by national statistics agency Istat. The government wants every Italian to have access to super-fast Internet by 2026-but it has a long way to go.
24.What does the author think of towns like Colle di Tora?
A.Places in imagination. B.Places everyone wants to visit.
C.Places falling behind. D.Places with unique cultures.
25.Why are Anna’s and Simona’s cases mentioned in the text?
A.To present their lifestyles. B.To make a comparison.
C.To clarify a concept. D.To show the bad network.
26.What does Pandolfi think the newest broadband can do for his town?
A.Make it fit for telework. B.Attract many more visitors.
C.Bring peace to the residents. D.Allow the government to manage the town.
27.What is the author’s attitude to the Italian government’s plan?
A.Tolerant. B.Negative. C.Optimistic. D.Cautious.
C
You can remember the face, but can't put a name to it. Many of us have been caught in this embarrassing situation. But researchers say it is often easier to remember someone's name than what they look like.
Twenty-four volunteers were shown 40 pictures of strangers, paired with random(随机的) names. They were given time to memorize the faces and names before being tested on which they thought they had seen before.
The participants could remember up to 85 percent of the names but only 73 percent of the faces. When they were shown a different picture of the same person, the participants could recall only 64 percent of faces, according to the study, led by the University of York.
That may be because faces are only recognized visually(视觉地), while names can be both spoken and written down so appear in our visual and audio memory. When people were shown famous people, they also remembered their names more accurately than their photographs. Co-author Dr Rob Jenkins, from the university’s psychology department, said, ''Our study suggests that, while many people may be bad at remembering names, they are likely to be even worse at remembering faces. This will surprise many people as it is against our initial understanding. Our life experiences with names and faces have misled us about how our minds work. '' Remembering names gets harder with age, leading to many uncomfortable moments for middle-aged people when they run into people they know.
But to study whether names are harder to recall than faces, the researchers, whose findings are published in the Quarterly Journal of Experimental Psychology, used a ''fair test'' where the participants were presented with strangers' names and faces.
28.What can we know according to the research in Paragraph 3?
A.It is certain that names are harder to recall than faces.
B.Remembering names is more easily than remembering faces.
C.Most participants can remember the face not the name to it.
D.The participants can recall 73% faces of the same person.
29.Which of the following will the author agree with?
A.Age will weaken the ability to remember names.
B.Unlike faces, names are only recognized visually.
C.Faces can appear in our visual and audio memory.
D.Rob Jenkins has proved people can remember faces better.
30.What does the underlined word ''initial'' in Paragraph 4 mean?
A.Clear. B.first. C.Unusual. D.Creative.
31.What can we infer from the last paragraph?
A.People can't remember strangers’ names and faces.
B.Recalling names is more difficult than remembering faces.
C.The researcher uses the same method to study another problem.
D.Whether names are harder to recall than faces is further proved.
D
Imagine an island untouched by humans and without any large mammals.Colorful and strange birds of all shapes and sizes fly over forests and seaside hills. The sky is painted with endless clouds. Flightless birds nest safely on the ground, and seabirds cover the beaches. The sound of the bird song is overwhelming. The Maori named this place “Aotearoa,” Land of the Long White Cloud. The world now knows it as New Zealand.
When the Maori sailed their canoes across the Pacific Ocean from their homeland, Hawaiki, at least 120 different species of birds lived in Aotearoa. Eleven species of moa , an ostrich-like bird, moved freely, and the largest stood 11 feet tall. The Haast’s eagle dominated the skies with its wing span of nearly 10 feet. Because bats were the only mammals, Aotearoa was an actual bird paradise.
Unfortunately, the Maori overhunted the moa for meat. As the moa disappeared, the Haast’s eagle lost its primary food source. By the time Europeans arrived in New Zealand, both birds were extinct.
When European settlers arrived, they brought animals that attacked birds. These non-native animals exploded in number because they had no predators. Birds also lost habitat as forests were cut down for wood and pastures.
Within a few hundred years of humans discovering and living in New Zealand, more than half the unique bird species were extinct. The whekau, found throughout New Zealand in the 1800s, was declared extinct in 1914. The piopio, considered the best songbird in Aotearoa, was last seen in the mid-1900s.
Thirty percent of the species now alive are in danger because of other animals and loss of habitat. Scientists estimate nature would take 50 million years to replace the birds lost over the last 1,000 years. New Zealand conservationists are working to save the threatened species.
32.What does the first paragraph tell us?
A.New Zealand is a paradise for birds. B.Aotearoa does not really exist.
C.The Maori founded New Zealand. D.No mammals lived on the island.
33.What does the underlined word “predators” probably mean in Paragraph 4?
A.Partners. B.Killers. C.Friends. D.Settlers.
34.What mainly caused the disappearance of birds ?
A.Threats from man and other animals. B.The arrival of Europeans.
C.The lack of food sources. D.The increase in farmland.
35.What is the author most likely to talk about next?
A.Why local officials stop hunting. B.What living conditions for natives are like.
C.How many animals have survived on the island.
D.What efforts conservationists take to guard bird species.
