As a child growing up in a suburban town in the Northeast of the United States, the arrival of spring had little meaning for me. Sure, we had a week-long spring vocation from school, but the key word there was vacation, not spring.
For the kids in my neighborhood, the arrival of spring was a non-event. There were two important seasons: winter, when we could go skating and sledding or build snow forts, and summer, when we could finally make proper use of the beach about 100 meter east of my family home. Spring and autumn were just technical details, weeks and weeks of waiting for the good times’ return.
Admittedly, spring later developed its own attractions for me. “In the spring a young man’s fancy turns to thoughts of love”, as the poet Alfred Lord Tennyson noted. However, it was not spring itself, but the other stuff that got my attention.
In short, I never thought much at all about spring and then I arrived in China. I had been in Beijing for about three months when my first Spring Festival rolled around, and it could hardly be ignored. Aside from the random bursts of fireworks at any time day or night, what stood out most for me was that the capital seemed to be empty.
It was as though the crowds and streams of cars and trucks commonly seen in the capital had all gone into hiding. My puzzlement cleared up when I returned to work. My colleagues explained that Chinese traditionally travel, if necessary, to visit their families during Spring Festival, and that many Beijingers were not natives of the capital.
I also got my first knowledge of something about Spring Festival that never ceases to amaze me. Regardless of when the holiday is set to begin, there is an almost immediate and sudden change for the better in the weather. Spring really does arrive.
I can’t begin to figure out how the ancient Chinese could create a system that would almost always accurately predict when the season would shift year after year after year. But they did.
24. What did the author think of spring as a child?
A. It hardly left any impression on him. B. It was always beyond his imagination.
C. It was a tiring and long holiday. D. It was a season full of promise.
25. What impressed the author most about Beijing during the Spring Festival?
A. The busy traffic. B. The unexpected quietness.
C. Beijingers’ love for travel. D. Occasional bursts of fireworks.
26. How does the author feel about the system created by ancient Chinese?
A. Desperate. B. Confused. C. Wonderful. D. Convenient.
27. What can be inferred from the text?
A. Spring Festival in Beijing will make one feel quite lonely.
B. The author spent his first Spring Festival at a colleague’s home.
C. In China Spring Festival always indicates the coming of Spring.
D. The author still worked during the Spring Festival while in Beijing.
C
The idea of low material desire, low consumption and refusing to work, marry and have children, concluded as a “lying down” lifestyle, recently struck a chord with many young Chinese who are eager to take pause to breathe in this fast-paced and highly-competitive society.
Many millennials (千禧一代) and generation Zs complained to the Global Times that burdens, including work stress, family disputes and financial strains, have pushed them “against the wall”. They said they hate the “involution(内卷),” joking that they would rather give up some of what they have than get trapped in an endless competition against peers.
“Instead of always following the ‘virtues’ of struggle, endure and sacrifice to bear the stresses, they prefer a temporary lying down as catharsis (宣泄) and adjustment,” said a scholar. “It is no wonder that some young people, under the growing pressures from child-raising to paying the mortgage (按揭) today, would try to live in a simple way and leave the worries behind.”
Interestingly, the majority of millennials and Gen Zs reached by the Global Times, who claim to be big fans of the lying down philosophy, acknowledged that they only accept a temporary lying down as a short rest. It is true that with the great improvement of living conditions, some Chinese youth have partially lost the spirit of hardship and are not willing to bear too much hard work. But in fact, lying down is not entirely comfortable. Young people who lie down always feel guilty about their constant loss of morale (士气) far beyond their reach.
“Young people on campus have both aspirations and confusion about their future, but most of us have rejected setting ourselves up in chains to waste opportunities and challenges,” a postgraduate student told the Global Times. “It’s no use running away. I have to ‘stand up’ and face the reality sooner or later.”
28. What does the underlined phrase in paragraph 1 mean?
A. Warned. B. Punished. C. Amused. D. Touched.
29. What might have caused the “lying down” lifestyle among the young?
A. Improvements in living conditions.
B. Growing pressure from family and social life.
C. Increasing material possessions from families.
D. Temporary adjustment to failure in competitions.
30. What’s the scholar’s attitude toward the “lying down” group?
A. Understanding. B. Intolerant. C. Supportive. D. Unclear.
31. What can be inferred about the young generation from the text?
A. They never really drop their responsibilities.
B. They really enjoy the “lying down” lifestyle.
C. They find their dreams far beyond their reach.
D. They would rather escape than take challenges.
D
At first glance, it seems that giant pandas might not be good at hide-and-seek. With their black and white coats, they appear to have a hard time matching their backgrounds and avoiding detection by their enemies. But a new study finds that the unique markings, in fact, provide effective camouflage (伪装) and help them disappear into their surroundings. Scientists have long wondered what function the black-and-white coloring plays.
For their study, researchers analyzed photos of giant pandas in their natural habitats. “We’ve found that the animals are very well camouflaged because they use habitats with dark and lighting conditions, and also snow during some time of the year,” study author Tim Caro of the University of Bristol and the University of California, Davis, tells Treehugger.
They found that the black patches (块) of fur match primarily shade and dark tree trunks. They also match the ground, rocks and leaves. The white fur patches match snow, rocks, and waxy, bright leaves. Sometimes pandas also have patches of pale brown fur and those match rocks, ground and shady background areas.
The researchers also explored a type of environmental camouflage known as disruptive coloration. That’s when highly contrasting patterns or very visible boundaries on an animal break up its body outline. They found that the black and white borders on the panda’s coat make it less noticeable, particularly from farther away.
It might seem a bit confusing because giant pandas are very easy to spot at a zoo, for instance. But the environment and the viewer make a difference.
“We modelled their coloration through enemies’ eyes as well as how humans see them so we are sure of the results.” Caro says.
“It seems that giant pandas appear easily noticeable to us because of short viewing distances and unnatural backgrounds, when we see them, either in photographs or at the zoo,it is almost always from close up, and often against a backdrop that doesn’t reflect their natural habitats,” says author Nick Scott-Samuel of the University of Bristol. “From a more realistic enemy’s view, the giant panda is actually rather well camouflaged.”
32. What is the general first impression of giant pandas?
A. They like staying away from humans. B. They are really good at hide-and-seek.
C. They match the backgrounds very well. D. They can be easily detected by enemies
33. What does the underlined word “They” in paragraph 3 refer to?
A. Tree trunks. B. Pale brown pandas.
C. Black fur patches. D. Shady background areas
34. What can we learn about giant pandas from Nick Scott-Samuel’s words?
A. They are less noticeable in natural environments.
B. They can be easily noticed even from farther away.
C. They often disappear into backgrounds in a zoo.
D. They can not camouflage from an enemy’s view.
35. What can be a suitable title for the text?
A. Giant Pandas Hide Themselves From Tourists
B. Giant Pandas Are Actually Good at Camouflaging
C. The Black-and-white Coloring Proves Appealing
D. You Are More Likely to Spot Giant Pandas in Nature

Make going to the bookstore more entertaining than a trip to the toy store. Never buy toys while your children is around the toy store. 37 I usually take my children to the bookstore when they are free. And every time, they all enjoy themselves. Read your children’s favorite books and discuss these books with them. One of the best ways to show children the importance of reading is to spend time reading their favorite books with them. Children love to chat about their favorite characters and scenes. 39
Keep reading simple books. The majority of parents may ignore this point. This is hard when children are first reading because we want to push them forward, but easy books make little children happy, especially books with lots of pictures. 40 There are fewer words for children to decode (解码,破译), and they can understand the plot and the jokes even at a lower reading level.
