Samsung
Saying that Samsung makes great tablets might sound strange to someone not too familiar with their devices, but the company has made some interesting strides with tablets. And much like their phones, Samsung has a wide variety in their products, with the very affordable Tab A7/A8, to the high-end flagship S8 ultra. So if you’re team Android as opposed to Apple, Samsung is probably the way to go.
Best tablet: Samsung Galaxy Tab S8 Ultra
Microsoft
Microsoft has traditionally been a major player in computing so it’s no shock that they also make well-designed and more than capable tablets — the Microsoft Surface. With the idea of the Surface tablets being a 2-in-1 device, a tablet that can functionally run like a laptop, running windows, and featuring basically the same processors that you’d find in a laptop.
And with an additional keyboard, great displays and long battery life, the Surface tablets make for great machines for work or play respectively.
Best tablet: Microsoft Surface Pro 8
Amazon
Amazon does indeed make tablets and, they’re capable too. Amazon’s Fire HD tablets are firmly in the budget tablet range but that doesn’t make them less capable. In terms of size, they range from seven up to ten inches and even include a kids’ tablet for the young ones. So if you prefer tablets over ten inches, you may be wanting to look elsewhere.
But all in all, they’re a good shout for a first-time tablet buyer that isn’t looking to spend a few hundred pounds on a device, but still wants to watch videos or browse the web on the go.
Best tablet: Amazon Fire HD 10 plus

Every auntie I know has a kitchen drawer containing (容纳) a carefully kept collection of yogurt dabbas. Dabba is an Indian word for “box”, but it refers to all kinds of containers, too. Dabbas live many lives: the containers holding the yogurt we eat every day are saved and washed and washed again.
The reused dabbas end up storing food and pot luck contributions. They pass from house to house, living in their drawer or the fridge. Sometimes they are even returned to their original (最初的) owners full of some other delicious food. This is a fairly advanced skill and one only the elder aunties manage-recognizing their dabba from their friends’ seemingly same container is nothing short of miraculous (奇迹般的).
But just as every auntie values her dabbas, every uncle hates them. “How many of these things can you possibly need?” my father used to ask my mother, extremely annoyed. She would shoot him a look that would surely have killed a weaker man and place her dabba carefully back.
When I went away to university, my mom used to cook food and send it to me with strict instructions to wash the dabbas and bring them home. I felt awkward about my dabbas — why did we need to save these things? I weighed the choices: if I threw away the dabbas, would she still send me food? I knew the answer was yes, but it wasn’t a risk I was prepared to take.
Finally, I found my way to Halifax, where I now have a family of my own. Like my mother, I’m also the proud owner of a rich dabba collection, which I guard seriously. My husband is an American. Dealing with cultural differences is surely an adventure. The other night, I saw him throw my dabbas into the recycling bin. I narrowed my eyes a little as I fished them out, washed them up and replaced them in their drawer. I was practicing my mother’s death look.
4. What does the advanced skill in paragraph 2 suggest?
A. The elder aunties value their dabbas a lot.
B. Dabbas strengthen the ties between friends.
C. It isn’t hard to tell the difference between dabbas.
D. The elder aunties have unique skills in preserving dabbas.
5. How did the author deal with the dabbas sent by her mom when in university?
A. She threw them away.
B. She sold them for money.
C. She sent them to a recycling center.
D. She washed them and brought them home.
6. How does the author sound in the last paragraph?
A. Humorous. B. Confused.
C. Curious. D. Frightened.
7. What can be a suitable title for the text?
A. Hidden Functions of Dabbas
B. The Adventure of Dabbas
C. The Many Lives of Dabbas
D. Mom’s Collection of Dabbas
【答案】4. A 5. D 6. A 7. C

【4题详解】

【5题详解】
推理判断题。根据第四段中的“When I went away to university, my mom used to cook food and send it to me with strict instructions to wash the dabbas and bring them home.(当我离开家去上大学时,我妈妈经常做饭寄给我,并严格要求我把dabbas洗干净带回家)”和“I weighed the choices: if I threw away the dabbas, would she still send me food? I knew the answer was yes, but it wasn’t a risk I was prepared to take.(我权衡了选择:如果我扔掉dabbas,她还会给我送食物吗?我知道答案是肯定的,但我不愿意冒这个险)”可推知,在大学时,作者把妈妈寄来的dabbas洗干净,然后把它们带回家。故选D。
【6题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段中的“The other night, I saw him throw my dabbas into the recycling bin. I narrowed my eyes a little as I fished them out, washed them up and replaced them in their drawer. I was practicing my mother’s death look. (那天晚上,我看见他把我的dabbas扔进了回收箱。我眯起眼睛把它们拿出来,洗干净,放回抽屉里。我在练习我母亲的死亡表情)”推知,作者在最后一段听起来很幽默。故选A。

The Many Lives of Dabbas适合作本文最佳标题。故选C。

I have hitchhiked (搭便车) around the world, but one of my most memorable and unusual hitchhiking experience happened in Africa. I was backpacking there by myself, and I somehow ended up in the middle of nowhere in Botswana. I was planning to travel to Namibia, but I had no idea how to get there because there was a national park between me and the Namibian border. I spoke to the local people and they told me that there were no buses, but it was possible to hitchhike. I got one to the entrance of the national park, where I then waited for my next ride.
I didn’t have to wait for long; the first car that drove past picked me up. It was a pickup truck already carrying loads of people, but I managed to squeeze in. The journey through the national park was exciting and we saw elephants and giraffes on the way. Then something un-expected happened, a hippo (河马) traffic accident. Yes, you read that right! There was an-other car driving towards us when a hippo that appeared out of nowhere ran suddenly to and hit the car heavily. Hippos are the most dangerous animals in Africa, and yes, they are often found to attack cars passing by. I had gotten terrible meetings with hippos before, but this was the first time I saw a hippo traffic accident.
We stopped to check that everyone was alright. The people were fine, but the hippo was lying on the ground on its back, legs pointing straight up. People were trying to turn the hippo around so that it could walk away, but it was so heavy that they were having a hard time. They finally made it and the hippo was only slightly injured. I don’t know what happened to the hippo later but it made my hitchhiking experience so much more interesting.
8. How did the author get to the national park?
A. By walking. B. By hitchhiking. C. By bus. D. By air.
9. Why are hippos considered the most dangerous animals?
A. They are the largest animals. B. They always ruin crops.
C. They often attack cars. D. They often eat people.
10. How did the accident happen?
A. The hippo hit the car on purpose.
B. The car hit the hippo accidentally.
C. The truck hurt the hippo’s baby.
D. The truck woke up the hippo accidentally.
11. What does the writer think of this hitchhiking in Africa?
A. He feels it is moving.
B. He feels it is boring.
C. He thinks it is a terrible experience.
D. He thinks it a fun experience.
【答案】8. B 9. C 10. A 11. D

【9题详解】

Have you ever escaped taking on a role or opportunity because you didn’t feel confident enough? Perhaps the voice in your head asked: “Why me? I am not yet ready, not capable enough, or don’t have enough experience.”
If you can relate, you’re among the majority of women with whom I’ve worked. I recently asked more than 120 women, from areas including the U.S., UK, Australia, Georgia, Italy, India, Jamaica, and Bermuda: If you’ve ever avoided risks, what factors and reasons contributed to this? More than 70% reported that selfdoubt, or not having enough belief in themselves, their capabilities, or their skills, was a driving factor.
As one wellknown executive told me: “Every day I doubt myself. I doubt that I am good enough to be where I am.”
This shouldn’t come as a surprise. We know selfdoubt is a pervasive and often paralyzing concern, particularly for women. A study by psychologists at Cornell and Washington State highlighted higher levels of selfdoubt in women. Research has also shown that women will apply for a job only if they meet all of the qualifications, while men will apply when they fulfill only 60%. Another recent study identified a considerable gender gap when it comes to selfpromotion, with women providing less favorable assessments of their own past performance and potential future ability. Ultimately, men take more chances on themselves, and that pays dividends in the long run.
While this pattern of selfdoubt emerged again and again in studies, my interactions, and my client work, I also noticed another commonality: These women’s selfdoubts weren’t sabotaging their success. The vast majority of successful women leaders I’ve interviewed and coached have built exciting and satisfying careers even while facing selfdoubt.
What these women also had in common is courage in the absence of confidence—a trait that is often weaponized against women and used to explain why they fail to achieve career goals. My work has found that successful women take decisive action to move forward even while grappling with fears and doubts and questioning their own “readiness”.
“As women, we often feel like we have to be 100% ready in order to move forward. But, if you are 50% or 75% there, jump. Just do it,” said Megan Costello, former executive director of the Boston Mayor’s Office for Women’s Advancement.
12. What is the real factor for women to escape taking on a role?
A. Higher risks. B. Different beliefs. C. Inner feelings. D. Related experiences.
13. What is typical of women in terms of selfpromotion?
A. They tend to be less optimistic. B. They prefer to be well qualified.
C. They try to be favorably assessed. D. They hope to be clearly identified.
14. Which can best replace the underlined word “sabotaging” in Paragraph 5?
A. Promoting. B. Weakening. C. Achieving. D. Balancing.
15. How do women with selfdoubts succeed?
A. They should be courageous and decisive. B. They should keep themselves unprepared.
C. They should stop questioning their careers. D. They should learn from famous executives.
【答案】12. C 13. A 14. B 15. A
根据第二段中“More than 70% reported that selfdoubt, or not having enough belief in themselves, their capabilities, or their skills, was a driving factor.(超过70%的人报告说,自我怀疑,或者说对自己、自己的能力或技能缺乏足够的信心是一个驱动因素)”可知,女性不愿承担角色的真正原因是内心的感受。故选C。
【13题详解】
细节理解题。根据第四段中“Another recent study identified a considerable gender gap when it comes to selfpromotion, with women providing less favorable assessments of their own past performance and potential future ability.(最近的另一项研究发现,在自我推销方面存在巨大的性别差异,女性对自己过去的表现和未来潜在能力的评价不那么有利)”可知,在自我推销方面,女性的典型特征是往往不那么乐观。故选A。
【14题详解】
词句猜测题。根据画线词后文“The vast majority of successful women leaders I’ve interviewed and coached have built exciting and satisfying careers even while facing selfdoubt.(我采访和指导过的绝大多数成功女性领导者都建立了令人兴奋和满意的职业生涯,尽管她们也面临自我怀疑)”以及上文“These women’s selfdoubts weren’t”可知,采访和指导过的绝大多数成功女性领导者都建立了令人兴奋和满意的职业生涯,尽管她们也面临自我怀疑,可见这些女性的自我怀疑并没有削弱她们的成功。故划线词意思是“削弱”。故选B。
【15题详解】
细节理解题。根据倒数第二段中“My work has found that successful women take decisive action to move forward even while grappling with fears and doubts and questioning their own “readiness”.(我的研究发现,成功女性即使在与恐惧和怀疑作斗争并质疑自己的“准备程度”时,也会采取果断行动向前迈进)”可知,自我怀疑的女性应该勇敢果断,来取得成功。故选A。

Students’ Union
【答案】Sample writing:
Dear fellow students,
Faced with the still raging pandemic, we are primarily responsible for our own personal health. Thus, I’m appealing to all of you to take measures to safeguard our health.
Nothing is more important than our health, without which, nothing can be achieved and everything tends to be meaningless. It is highly advocated that we keep a balanced diet to take in as much nutritious and diverse food as possible first. Then we should work out on a regular basis to build up a strong barrier against the virus and potential risks. Most importantly, wearing facial masks properly and adopting a positive attitude are always helpful.
Hopefully we can all develop some good habits to help protect against the virus and diseases. Wish you a healthy life!

47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
The Ice Cream Truck
“Never give up! Never give up! “ chanted (反复唱) two young children. Max and Lily, as they marched barefoot behind their grandmother Mimi who was leading them on a great adventure, straight off the beach where they had spent the day building sand castles and swimming in the sea. They were seeking the mysterious ice-cream truck!
Over the years, Mimi had become an example of positivity for her family. It was not a title she earned without effort, however. Her husband died early and she was left to raise her daughter alone. She could have lived under a black cloud. But she challenged herself to find joy every day instead. She was always up for a new challenge, no matter what it was. Leading by example, Mimi taught her daughter and her grandchildren how much one could achieve with a positive attitude.
Before starting her adventure with Max and Lily on that hot July afternoon, Mimi heard the ice-cream man’s bell. She saw him briefly, before he turned and disappeared. The ice-cream man visited the beach on a daily basis, although the delay between the sound of his bell and the disappearance of his truck is not long. One must be quick to catch him.
Max and Lily were disappointed when they didn’t catch him in time that day. That was until Mimi’s eyes shone and she said, “Never give up!” She explained that the truck might be gone, but they could hurry up to find it at its next stop.
They walked block after block. Not knowing which direction the truck had taken, they had to make their best guess about where to search. The kids’ tiny legs were tired, but they went on, continuing the chant, “Never give up! Never give up!”
注意:1. 续写词数应为150左右;
2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。

__________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】One possible version:
After about twenty minutes of walking, Max’s faith started to get shaken in the burning sun. He wondered out loud, “Maybe we should quit. We have been walking pretty far and haven’t seen the truck yet.” With that, he collapsed, resting his aching legs and rubbing his sore feet. Mimi bent over and patted him gently on the shoulder. Smiling, she comforted the boy, “Max, remember: winners never quit, and quitters never win”. “Yeah! Never give up!” Lily agreed. Max looked up, thought for a while and jumped to his feet. “You are right. Let’s hurry!” And so they marched on.
Just two blocks later, they found it. The ice-cream truck was parked just around the corner, shining brilliantly in the sunlight, as if waiting to reward the three adventurers with a most generous treat for their patience and determination. “Finally!” Max cried at this sight, throwing a fist in the air, while Lily screamed with excitement. They laughed, cheered, and chanted in chorus, “Never give up!” In that magical moment, Mimi turned that phrase into a battle cry for the children. They would be ready for any challenges upon hearing these words. So never give up; your ice-cream truck may be just a block away.
