If you were to walk up to Arthur Bonner and say, ”Hey, Butterfly Man, “ his face would break into a smile. The title suits him. And he loves it.

Arthur Bonner works with the Palos Verdes blue butterfly, once thought to have died out. Today the butterfly is coming back - thanks to him. But years ago if you'd told him this was what he'd be doing someday, he would have laughed, “You're crazy.” As a boy, he used to be “a little tough guy on the streets”. At age thirteen, he was caught by police stealing. At eighteen, he landed in prison for shooting a man.

“I knew it had hurt my mom," Bonner said after he got out of prison. “So I told myself I would not put my mom through that pain again.”

One day he met Professor Mattoni, who was working to rebuild the habitat for an endangered butterfly called El Segundo blue.

“I saw the sign ‘Butterfly Habitat ’and asked, ‘How can you have a habitat when the butterflies can just flyaway?’”Bonner recalls. “Dr. Mattoni laughed and handed me a magnifying glass(放大镜), ‘Look at the leaves.’ I could see all these caterpillars (蝴蝶的幼虫) on the plant. Dr Mattoni explained, ‘Without the plant, there are no butterflies.’”

Weeks later, Bonner received a call from Dr. Mattoni, who told him there was a butterfly needed help. That was how he met the Palos Verdes blue. Since then he's been working for four years to help bring the butterfly back. He grows astragalus, the only plant the butterfly eats. He collects butterflies and brings them into a lab to lay eggs. Then he puts new butterflies into the habitat.

The butterfly' s population, once almost zero, is now up to 900. For their work, Bonner and Dr. Mattoni received lots of awards. But for Bonner, he earned something more: he turned his life around.

For six years now Bonner has kept his promise to stay out of prison. While he's bringing back the Palos Verdes blue, the butterfly has helped bring him back, too.

    24. Bonner came to know the Palos Verdes blue after he        .

    B. won many prizes from his professor

    C. met Dr. Mattoni, a professor of biology

Is a college education worth the price? This is a question more Americans are asking as attending a four-year college in the United States can cost more than $40,000 a year. Many people with a college education are drowning in student debt. They had to borrow money to finance their education.

A recent study found that someone with a 4-year college education earns two times as much as a high school graduate over a lifetime. And for nearly all study programs, an individual with a four-year bachelor’s degree earns even more than someone with a two-year degree.

Not all college majors have a guarantee of good wages. For example, a chemical engineer can expect to earn double the earnings of a social worker over a lifetime. On average, a finance graduate makes more than a nurse, while the nurse makes more than the teacher teaching children. Generally, college majors that require skills in mathematics have high lifetime earnings. Graduates in computer science, engineering, and physics have the highest wages. Graduates with bachelor’s degrees in some fields earn even less than people with a 2-year associate’s degrees over a lifetime.

That information comes from the Hamilton Project at the Brookings Institution. The Hamilton Project also noted “Personal enjoyment, engaging in meaningful work, and filling a social need should also enter into a student’s decision-making.” The numbers are only averages and there are many exceptions. Most students have little knowledge of what their future earning will be when they choose a major. Study organizers hope the report will help students make better decisions about higher education. In their words, “College degrees may not be a guarantee of higher income, but they come closer than just about any other investment one can make.”

    28. Why do more Americans doubt the college education now?

       A. The job market becomes weaker and weaker.

       B. The student loan interest rates remain high.

       C. Many students hate to go to college.

       D. The college costs are too high.

    29. A recent study in Paragraph 2 shows ______.

       A. a college education is worth the price

       B. a high school graduate has a low IQ

       C. the importance of high school education are often ignored

       D. people with college degree often have a permanent job

    30. Who may have the lowest wages on average according to the text?

       A. A nurse.

       B. An elementary school teacher.

       C. An engineer.

       D. A bank clerk.

    31. What can we learn from the last paragraph?

       A. Future earnings shouldn’t be the only reason for choosing a college major.

       B. Students should choose their college major according to their interests.

       C. Students’ college major has nothing to do with their future career.

       D. The wages of people have nothing to do with their college majors.

    D

According to a new scientific research, we are rapidly going close to major climate change and the effects on the environment could be quite serious. Geographers predict that climate zones could completely disappear within the next eighty years. Where will crops be grown if this happens? When the climate changes a lot, polar regions will get colder and tropical regions will get even hotter. As a result, where will animals be forced to move on the earth?

Climate changes like these could lead to the spread of diseases. Tropical storms and hurricanes(飓风)will not only increase but may also become stronger. If the changes come too quickly , animals and plants may not be able to adapt(适应)right away and could disappear from the earth .

According to Science Daily, a new study predicts that, by the year 2100, many of today’s familiar climates will be taken place by climate unknown in today’s world. It is urgent that we reduce the risks of far-reaching results for the whole world. The planet itself has been showing signs of change. In 2004, a huge tsunami created by a major earthquake killed thousands in Sumatra and in 2008, thousands more died in China in another big earthquake. Egypt was hit in 2009 with a major earthquake and Haiti was destroyed seriously and became ruins in 2010 by another big earthquake.

Not long ago, scientists discovered ice melting(融化)in west Antarctica(南极洲). This is very worrying because temperatures in this area have remained rather constant(不断的)and actually even lower at time . Melting occurs when temperatures increase and since temperatures have remained, the ice should not be melting. However, satellite data(数据)shows melting around west Antarctica .

Within just the last few months, new reports from around the world have been coming in and most agree that our climate situation is much worse than previously expected. At this point, it doesn’t matter what is causing it, but rather, what can be done about it. On the other hand, our world is getting more and more unstable(不稳定的)every year. Natural disasters(灾难)are becoming more frequent(频繁的)and serious.

However, other planets are experiencing global warming as well as our own and some scientists believe there may be some connections between these. No one knows anything for sure at this point because there is simply not enough data.

    32. What’s the writer’s attitude toward the climate changes?

       A. We should observe the great changes of the climate carefully.

       B. We must connect with other planets to prevent the climate changes.

       C. We should try our best to do something against the climate changes.

       D. We need to discover what causes the climate changes first of all.

    33. What does the underlined word “tropical” mean?

       A. Cold and dry.

       B. Cool and wet.

       C. Hot and wet.

       D. Warm and dry.

    34. What can be inferred from the passage?

       A. Collecting more data will help us to solve the problem.

       B. The climate will be much better than we have expected.

       C. Earthquakes can be avoided in a few years’ time.

       D. The ice in west Antarctica will stop melting in the future.

    35. What’s the passage mainly about?

       A. It tells us how to protect the environment of the earth.

       B. It talks about the bad effects of the climate changes.

       C. It shows us how to prevent diseases from spreading.

       D. It describes what we should do with the earthquakes.

    第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)

    根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。

Everyone knows that fish is good for health.   36   But it seems that many people don't cook fish at home. Americans eat only about fifteen pounds of fish per person per year, but we eat twice as much f1sh in restaurants as at home. Buying, storing, and coking fish isn't difficult.   37   This text is about how to buy and cook fish in an easy way.   38   Fresh fish should smell sweet: you should feel that you're standing at the ocean's edge. Any fishy or strong smell means the fish isn't fresh.   39   When you have bought a fish and arrive home, you’d better store the fish in the refrigerator if you don't cook it immediately, but fresh fish should be stored in your fridge for only a day or two. Frozen fish isn't as tasty as the fresh one. There are many common methods used to cook fish.   40   First, lean it and season it with your choice of spices (调料). Put the whole fish on a plate and steam it in a steam pot for 8 to 10 minutes if it weighs about one pound. (A larger one will take more time.) Then, it's ready to serve.

    A. Do not buy it.

    B. The easiest is to steam it.

    C. This is how you can do it.

    D. It just requires a little knowledge.

    E. The fish will go bad within hours.

    F. When buying fish, you should first smell it.

    G. The fats in fish are thought to help prevent heart disease.
