On average, wildfires destroy over 6 million acres of land each year in the US. Last year, the U.S. Forest Service spent over $1 billion fighting those fires, mostly out West. Blazes start easily where there’s plenty of dry fuel, such as dead grass, sticks and other dried plants. Knowing how much fuel is available can help fire management teams know where and when to be on high alert. And a teen has figured out a way to home in on such areas quickly.
Nadine Han, 13, is a seventh grader at Boston Latin School. When she built a robot three years ago with FIRST LEGO League, hers was designed to prevent wildfires. When the girl’s family visited Yellowstone National Park, later that year, what did they see? Evidence of wildfires. So Nadine followed up on that theme for her science fair project, and decided to find out how to predict wildfires.
The teen learned about a satellite called SMAP. Launched by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration in 2015, it detects how wet or dry the soil is. It also can tell whether that moisture (水分) is frozen or liquid. SMAP’s data soil moisture can be combined with other data to determine the vegetation water content, meaning the amount of water present in the plants. SMAP’s data and the vegetation water content data are both freely available from the National Snow and Ice Data Center. For her project, the teen downloaded a year’s worth of data.
Having compared plant water content and fuel moisture data for 1,413 different locations, she found that an increase in plant water content measured by the satellite was linked with an increase in fuel moisture as measured on the ground. For her study, 87% of the sites showed such a link.
“This suggests it’s feasible to use satellite data to estimate fuel moisture on the ground,” Nadine concludes. The teen now hopes her technique will help land managers determine fire risks more quickly. Next, Nadine hopes to make a computer program that will estimate fire risk using satellite data.

C
The Financial Times app urged me to read the latest headlines. More disturbing, Google News installed itself and did the same thing. Most absurd of all, every single incoming email announced itself with a beep.
This was all simple enough to fix. Text messages and phone calls are now the only apps allowed to interrupt me. Still, it was annoying. I wondered: surely everyone switches off most notifications, right?
Perhaps not, I stumbled upon an essay by Guardian columnist Coco Khan marveling at how much calmer she felt after turning off notifications. She explained that WhatsApp alone had sent her over 100 notifications a day and that she had only silenced the apps because she’d been on holiday, and the phone was buzzing all night.
I read Khan’s account as a cautionary tale for all of us. Humans can adapt to a lot; it’s easy to sleepwalk into a state of chronic stress and distraction without ever reflecting that things could be different.
This seems common. One of the most important findings in behavioral science is that default(默认) settings have an outsize influence over our choices. App makers clearly believe we’ll put up with it, and they may be right.
One study, published in 2015 by researchers at the Technical University of Berlin, found that on average six out of seven smartphone apps were left in their default notification settings. Given how many notifications are valueless, this suggests that in the face of endless notifications, many smartphone users have learnt helplessness.
Of course we sometimes want to know immediately when something has happened. As I am fond of saying, a doorbell is more convenient than going to the door every 90 seconds to see if anyone is there. Although that trade-off would change if the doorbell itself were sounding every few minutes, day and night.
But most of us have too many notifications enabled. “ Notification” is a dishonest euphemism(委婉说法),anyway. The correct word is “interruption”.
Oliver Burkeman puts it in his book Four Thousand Weeks: our attention is not just a scarce resource; it is life itself.“At the end of your life, looking back, whatever caught your attention from moment to moment is simply what your life will have been.“ Glance at yet another notification, and you are literally paying with your life.
28. How does the author introduce the topic?
A. By providing data. B. By posing a contrast.
C. By making a comparison. D. By describing personal experience.
29. What can we learn about the author and Coco Khan?
A. They preferred a peaceful life to a busy life.
B. They simply turned off their phones to keep themselves calm.
C. Both of them weren’t happy with default settings on smartphones.
D. They were often troubled by unnecessary notifications on their phones.
30. Which is one of the reasons why people live with annoying notifications?
A. Because they are used to them.
B. Because they are under too much stress.
C. Because most of the notifications are valuable.
D. Because they forget to deal with their messages constantly.
31. What can we infer from Oliver Burkeman’s words?
A. It is advisable to live a life without smartphones.
B. Being interrupted by useless notifications is a waste of life.
C. People need to reflect on their choices of smartphone apps.
D. People who have adapted to endless notifications are hopeless.
D
AI is currently being used in various ways. So what does that mean? Does it mean the world will soon be overrun by robots? However, when it comes to customer service, AI cannot completely replace human interaction, for now at least.
Actually, all customer service interactions have two aspects: emotion and urgency. New AI tools can handle high-urgency situations quickly, but as to high-emotion situations, no AI can deal with them successfully. A robot might be able to recognize you’re trying to check in for a flight recently canceled, but the emotional aspect is entirely un-programmable. Perhaps the passenger has increasingly high emotions about the flight being canceled because he is flying to an important business meeting. Cases like this can create high-stress moments for the customer. Only a person can understand the difference.
High-stress moments tend to stay with customers forever, so it’s important to have a plan in place. Good companies are better at determining which cases AI can handle on its own and which cases need to be handled by a human with AI assistance. In high-emotion cases, there’s no substitute (替补) for the personal touch of a human. Passengers whose luggage is lost are going to seek out an employee to help them locate their bags. Although AI can be used to locate their bags, it can hardly deal with passengers’ high emotions.
The conversation around AI now is too focused on the question of how AI can replace human interaction, which is missing the point. The aim of AI shouldn’t be to replace human interaction, but to improve it. The question here won’t be how far we can push AI, but how we can use our imagination to continue reinventing (改良) the problem-solving process.
32. What is implied in paragraph 1?
A. AI has had control over the human being.
B. AI can totally replace human interaction.
C. AI can handle high-emotion cases easily.
D. AI still has its own limitations at present.
33. Why is the example of a canceled fight mentioned in paragraph 2?
A. To highlight the passengers’ high emotions.
B. To prove the efficiency of AI handling urgency.
C. To show AI can handle high-emotion cases well.
D. To stress the advantage a person has over AI.
34. Why should companies have a plan for high-stress moments?
A. High-stress moments require more AI tools.
B. High-stress moments can be handled by AI alone.
C. High-stress moments are unforgettable for customers.
D. High-stress moments are ignored by most companies.
35. What will we focus on when using AI to handle customer service?
A. Replacing humans with new AI tools.
B. Paying attention to solving problems.
C. Avoiding making trouble for customers.
D. Trying to invent more new AI tools.

第二节(满分25分)
67. 阅读下面短文,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
I remember the first time I got on a horse. I was two years old and we were watching a friend of the family ride. My mom agreed to let me take a short ride with the friend and that was it! I was horse crazy. From then on, I drove my parents insane begging for a horse.
When I was four years old, I had Selective Mutism (缄默症). This is a rare childhood disorder in which children stop speaking in certain social situations. I spoke normally to my parents, my brother and certain other people, but was silent at school and in social situations. I went days, weeks, months without a sound at school.
I suffered silently through school until I was ten years old when one in a long string of psychologists had an idea. One day I was asked by the psychologist what I wanted more than anything in the world. He explained that I was going to be given an opportunity to work for it. I couldn’t believe my good luck, but I could not answer. Finally, I was permitted to whisper the answer in my mother’s ear. “A horse.” was all I could say.
I was to get a little horse, but I had to live up to my end of the bargain. I had a chart of weekly tasks I had to accomplish. I had to answer the phone five times per weck, make five phone calls to my friends, say one word to my teacher at school and the list went on. For a child with Selective Mutism, saying one word to someone can be like climbing Mount Everest.
I did everything that was asked of me and the day came when my parents found a local riding stable that had the perfect pony. His name was Sequoia, so perfect that I fell in love with him immediately. We boarded him and I began taking lessons. It truly was a dream come true.
注意:
1.续写词数应为150左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
Each week I could not wait for Saturday and my lesson.
