Tim and Paul stepped into the 130 Diner for breakfast after they fought a terrible fire for 12 hours. When they wanted to pay the meal, they were very surprised. The young waitress had paid their bill, leaving a sweet message on their bill instead, “Your meal is on me today. Thank you for serving people and running into the places everyone runs away from. ”
Touched, the two firefighters shared her kind action on social media and it spread quickly. And later they found out the true story of the waitress who had paid for their meal. Liz Woodward had been trying to make a living. Her father had a brain illness that left him paraplegic (瘫痪的). They decided to help the woman who had shown such kindness even if she was in trouble. They set up a campaign(运动) to raise $10, 000 for a wheelchair-accessible car for her father. The donations, however, did not stop when the campaign ended. Having heard of her kindness, Mobility Ventures, which made the wheelchair-accessible cars, refused to take the money and gave the family one for free as a Christmas gift.
Liz was sograteful to the two firefighters and many strangers who have reached out to help her, saying, “The kindness the supporters and Mobility Ventures have shown is really unbelievable. I hopethis brings hope to other people in similar situations, and inspires people to help those in need in any possible way. ”

Instead of spending your spare time at work in the hope of making more money, maybe you should go to the sports center. That’s because itcould make you happy just like the money you made during this time. An interesting new study in The Lancet found that people who enjoy doing exercise have a greater sense of happiness than those who don’t.
Researchers from Oxford and Yale Universities used data collected from more than 1. 2 million Americans. They were asked, “How many times have you felt uncomfortable because of mental (心理的) problems in the past 30 days?”They were also asked about their exercise habits and were allowed to choose from 75 kinds of activities, including doing housework and childcare, running, weightliftingand cycling.
The researchers found that people who always exercise feel bad for about 35 days every year while the people doing little exercise feel bad for an additional(额外的) 18 days. From the study, people who exercised had 43 percent fewer days of poor mental health in the past month than people who did not exercise. All kinds of exercise can lead to a lower mental health burden (负担).
Social activities for exercising like team sports had an even more positive influence, although cycling was the most popular. Perhaps that’s because it takes place outdoors, which is always a way for people to break away from stress.
It is possible to get too much exercise. The right amount (量) seems to be three to five times per week, lasting 30 to 60 minutes each. The key point should be that any amount helps, so don’t force yourself to hit that perfect balance.

D. To advise readers to do team sports often.

It’s a pity that deaf people, or those who have hearing problems, can’t
enjoy music. But now a vibrating (振动的) suit brings them hope—it can
allow them to “feel” music through their skin, rather than hear it.
The special suit is able to translate music intosome vibrating pulses
(节拍). And the users can choose different levels.
Chase Burton, 33, a deaf filmmaker from Texas, the US, has been testing out the suit for four years. He understands that a deaf person’s experience with music is very different. “When I was a kid, I’d lie on the floor so I could feel the vibrations from my brother’s music playing. ” Burton told CNN.
Now when he wears the vibrating suit, he says the sound hits different parts of his body. “Maybe it will shake me strongly in my knees first. And then I’ll start to feel the vibrations in my back. And then I’ll feel some pulsations. ” Burton said.
The designers tried to help deaf people to have a chance to attend a concert. In 2016, some prototype (样品) suits were tested at a Lady Gaga concert in the US. The suit was also tested at a different concert in Las Vegas in 2019. It was given to 150 audiences (听众) at the concert where half the audience members were deaf and half could hear. At the same time, the company has been improving the technology and planned to put it into the market soon. And the final goal of the company is to make the technology available to all.
“We truly think that anything that makes sound can also cause vibratingpulses. ” the company’s talent and business development director, Jordan Richardson, told CNN.

D. sending music to their ears easily and quickly
( )43. Why does the writer mention Burton’s experience?
A. To introduce different ways people enjoy music.
B. To tell how different it is for a deaf person to enjoy music.
C. To show regret for not having the technology earlier.
D. To call on designers to make better products for deaf people.

★Level: National intangible cultural heritage(国家级非物质文化遗产)

The colorful clothes we wear these days are made by machines. But what did ancient people do if they wanted to wear something colorful? Tie-dye was a way to do this. More than 1,000 years ago, the Bai ethnic group in Yunnan used tie-dye to dye their clothes. During the Tang (618—907) and Song (960—1279) dynasties, this technique became so popular that people gave tie-dyed clothes to the emperor as gifts.
Students try their own tie-dye
Students at Dongguan Tsinglan School recently tried tie-dyeing. Let’s take a look at their works!
Wen Yiqing, 9

At the recent “Brave Bowl” American football competition, the Wildcats from Hangzhou Entel Foreign Language School fought hard against the Vikings from the High School Affiliated to Renmin University. The Wildcats won with a crushing victory, 45-26 on their home field, which greatly encouraged the team members.
“This victory means a lot to us because last year we lost the game right here at our school,” said Shawn, who plays for the Wildcats. After that failure, everyone was upset. So, they trained harder than ever. “We trained with the goal to win,” said Shawn.
During the game, Sam, the leader of the Wildcats, got hurt and had to leave the game. “Of course it lets us down, since Sam is the only quarterback (四分卫) on our team,” said Shawn. Even so, Sam still stood on the sidelines and cheered for the players. “When we heard Sam’s voice, we got more strength,” Shawn said. “Everyone was thinking the same: Win!”
The Wildcats are a nice and supportive team. In their training, they help each other tie their shoes. They cheer for one another and care if their teammates get hurt. There is a rule on the American football field. When a player gets hurt, all other players should kneel (单膝跪下) as a sign of respect. “When we are playing a game, we’re like a big family. It’s a very encouraging gesture.”
“American football is dangerous because it involves body collision (冲撞), but it also teaches us about being brave and united with our team members,” said Shawn.

Hou Changliang volunteered to teach at Xiangyang Primary School in a far village in Yunnan Province in August2017. It is the third rural (农村的) school that Hou, 34, has taught at since he graduated from the university in 2011.
Hou has witnessed (见证) the improvement in rural schools over the past ten years—from poor classrooms to new school buildings and from old desks to advanced equipment (设备), like computers. But Hou’s school still doesn’t have enough teachers. “The longer I stayed in the countryside, the deeper I understood the challenge in rural education. Rural schools need teachers, especially good ones,” Hou says.
In 2013, Hou found a job in Shenzhen. When his bus was leaving, he realized that tons of children were running behind it begging him not to go. “I just cannot leave these children,” Hou says. He returned to the school three months later. Now, he is in his 11th year as a volunteer teacher in the poor area.
When it comes to helping develop rural education, the first thing most people think of is to donate (捐赠) desks, books, clothing and even money. However, Hou found it doesn’t work well. No matter how many good books are donated, it is teachers who teach students to read. He uses an old saying to support his point: “Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day; teach him how to fish and you feed him for a lifetime.”
“Once a student asked me what an amusement park is after seeing it described in a textbook, which made me think about our education materials,” Hou says, adding that if rural situations are not covered in textbooks, these young people might not be able to connect the real life with the content (内容).
Although rural education has improved over time, rural students are far less likely to enter college than the students in cities. This year, among the 4,402 freshmen entering Peking University, 442 are from the countryside, according to the school’s statistics.
“There is still a long way to go to improve the rural education.” Hou concludes.
38.From the passage, we know that Hou Changliang __________.
A.has never left rural school in poor areas
B.has been a volunteer teacher
C.comes from a village in Yunnan Province
D.taught at the same village school in Yunnan
39.The third paragraph is written to show __________.
A.what difficulties Hou has witnessed
B.when Hou returned to the rural school
C.why Hou volunteered in rural schools
D.how long Hou has worked as a teacher
40.The underlined word “it” in Para.4 refers to _________.
A.volunteering B.donating C.teaching D.reading
41.Which of the following is probably Hou’s opinion?
A.Education materials should cover some rural situations.
B.Teachers are no longer wanted in rural schools recently.
C.Rural students are more likely to enter good universities.
D.People should donate more books to rural schools.
We all know there is a problem with plastic pollution. Five trillion plastic bags are used every year. One million plastic drinking bottles are bought every minute. What if we could use plastic waste to build roads? This is exactly what Toby McCartney has done.
In 2019, McCartney’s UK-based company, MacRebur, built the world’s first plastic road in Elgin town, Scotland. The plastic waste was made into grains and then mixed with biturnen (沥青). The road looks just like any other road. But it has improved strength and is more stretchy (有弹性的) thanks to the plastic.
“Our technology can not only help solve the problem of plastic waste but also produce roads that deal better with changes in the weather,” McCartney told the BBC.
McCartney’s idea came from a trip to India. “I saw people in India would put plastic waste into stove and burn it. The plastic would melt down (熔化) and form a seal in the hole,” said McCartney. “I knew that there must be some similarities between the plastic and biturnen, which both come from oil. That’s how I started to think about mixing them,” he said.
After lots of testing, McCartney found the perfect idea. Then the first road was built successfully. Now his company has built many plastic roads around the world, from Australia to Europe. A one-kilometer length of road uses about 684,000 plastic bottles or 1.8 million plastic bags. The road itself can be recycled in the end. The materials can be reused to build new roads.
“We’re just a small part of ending the plastic problems, but it’s nice to be part of it,” McCartney said. “I just don’t want my daughters to live in a world where there are more plastics in our oceans than fish.”
42.The plastic road ________ according to the passage.
A.is much less stretchy B.will melt down in hot days
C.can be recycled again D.looks different from other roads
43.McCartney found the new materials to the road ________.
A.by mistake B.in a hurry C.through hard work D.with Indians
44.Which is the best title for this passage?
A.Road to Recycling B.Ways to Build Roads
C.Materials to be Reused D.Problems to be Solved
45.Which of the following saying can best describe McCartney’s work?
A.No sale, no kill. B.Small change, big difference.
C.Practice makes perfect. D.Time and waves waits for no man.

①My friend Jake went on business for months, so he asked me to take care of the yard in the mountains. My friend worked hard, so he often kept the yard clean without any weed(杂草). And I was so lazy that I allowed weeds to grow secretly. In the early spring, by the stone bench appeared several clusters of buds, whose leaves were soft and green. A month later, when the leaves spread out richly, I discovered they were like wild orchids(兰花) in the forest.
②In the later summer, the grass produced flowers. They shaped like other forest orchids, but they were wax yellow, unlike those forest wild orchids, whose flowers were purple or brown red. I picked one flower, then came down the mountains to find Ted, a friend who knew plants well. As soon as Ted saw it, he immediately asked me where I picked it. “You are gonna be rich!” He excitedly explained, “This is a rare orchid, which is hard to find. Now this orchid is worth at least $10,000 each.”
③I told the good news to Jake. He was completely shocked. After a while, he said gently the orchid broke through the earth every year, but he thought it was just a weed, so he often pulled it out and threw it away. My friend couldn’t help saying sadly, “I have almost destroyed(摧毁) a kind of rare flower. If I could wait for it to flower with patience, it would have been discovered a few years before.”
④Yes, who will never miss some rare orchids in their own lives? We always pay attention to those wild weeds that haven’t yet flowered in time and don’t give them the time to flower and produce fruit to show their value.
⑤Give each grass the time to flower and give everyone a chance to show their value. Don’t blindly pull out a blade of grass or think lowly of a person and how many “rare orchids” we will get in our lives.

Educational apps (软件) are becoming more and more popular to help people learn, and they are sometimes even considered as a way to take the place of traditional education. But apps, just like textbooks and language lessons, are a medium (媒介). The way you use them will influence how successful you are. So how do you make sure you get the most out of your app, and what should you consider before deciding to use it?
Here’s what you should think about:
Learn from different sources (来源) (not just apps)
The beauty of being good at language is the world which it opens up to you. This is a world of different sources of information, from newspapers and books to TV, radio, music and, yes, even real people.
Set your purpose and plan your habits
The good apps are programmed to help you fit your studies around your timetable. These apps encourage habit building, because the successful formation of a habit make sure of your safe and regular return.
Remember that an app is just a tool
App developers have made educational apps interesting as game apps to keep you learning! Seldom will you have heard someone bent over a textbook say, “I’m in deep love with learning English!” So, never forget your purpose. It wasn’t to complete level five; it was to shoot the breeze with the local people.
__________
Find a friend to be with you. Attend an evening class. Borrow book. Buy a book. Book a week away and attend a language school. Just don’t forget your phone! The combination (结合) of app, language school, evenings out, a friend and a choice book or two turns out to be really satisfying.
