Here’s a new warning from health experts: Sitting is deadly. Scientists are increasingly warning that sitting for long periods-even if you also exercise from time to time-could be bad for your health. And it doesn’t matter where the sitting takes place. Several studies suggest people who spend most of their days sitting are more likely to be fat, have a heart attack or even die.
In an article published this week in the British Journal of Sports Medicine, Elin Ekblom-Bak suggested that scientists have to rethink how they define physical activity in order to draw more attention to the dangers of sitting. “After four hours of sitting, the body starts to send harmful signals,” said Ekblom-Bak. She explained that genes regulating the amount of glucose and fat in the body start to shut down.
Even for people who exercise, spending long periods of time sitting at a desk is still harmful. Tim Armstrong, a physical activity expert at the World Health Organization, said it is better for those people to exercise more times across the day rather than in a single bout.
Still, in a study published in 2012 that tracked more than 17,000 Canadians for about a dozen years, researchers found people who sat more had a higher death risk, whether or not they exercised. “We don’t have enough evidence yet to say how much sitting is bad,” said Peter Katzmarzyk of the Pennington Biomedical Research Center, who led the Canadian study. “But it seems the more you can get up from sitting, the better.”
Experts said more research is needed to find out how much sitting is dangerous, and what might be possible to offset those influence. “People should keep exercising because that has a lot of benefits,” Ekblom-Bak said. “But when they’re in the office, they should try to stop sitting as often as possible,” she said.
23.The new warning from health experts is to ________.
A.encourage people to do more exercise B.ask people not to sit in the same place
C.advise people not to sit for a long time D.make people pay attention to a heart disease
24.How does sitting too much influence the human body?
A.It results in a lower risk of deat. B.It reduces glucose and fat in the body.
C.It makes people too lazy to do exercise. D.It causes the body to send harmful signals.
25.The underlined word “offset” in Paragraph 5 most probably means ________.
A.cause B.reduce C.notice D.accept
26.What can we infer from the passage?
A.If people often sit too much, they will put on more weight.
B.Sitting for hours is harmless to people who do exercise every day.
C.People had better not sit for more than four hours in a single bout.
D.Canadians who did more exercise a day usually had a lower death risk.

“Please, mother, do sit down and let me try my hand,” said Fred Liscom, a bright, active boy, ten years old. Mrs. Liscom, looking pale and worn, was trying to clear away the breakfast she had hardly tasted. She smiled, and said, “You, Fred, you wash dishes?” “Yes, mother,” replied Fred, “Just try me.”
A look of relief came over his mother’s face as she sat in her chair. Fred washed the dishes, and put them in the closet. He then swept the kitchen, kissed his mother goodbye and set out for school. After school, Fred hurried home from school quickly, set the table, and again washed the dishes.
He kept on in this way for two weeks, till his mother was able to do her usual work, and he felt quite rewarded when the doctor, who happened in one day, said, “Well, madam, it’s my opinion that you would have been very sick if you had not kept quiet. You were so busy and tired before.” The doctor did not know what the boy did in order to make his mother “quiet”, nor how nervous the boy was while hearing his words. Fred had given up a great deal of what boys loved, for the purpose of helping his mother.
Besides this, his temper and his patience had been severely tried. He had been in the habit of going early to school, and staying to play after it was dismissed. The boys missed him, and their curiosity was excited. “I will tell you,” said Tom Barton, “I’ll find it out.”
So he called for Fred to go to school, and he walked lightly to the kitchen window. Looking in, he saw Fred standing at the table with a dishcloth in his hand. Then he reported this at school, and various were the greetings poor Fred received at break. “Well, you’re a brave one to stay at home washing dishes.” “Girl boy!”
Fred wanted to fight with some of his classmates, but his awareness of right and his love for his mother helped him. While he was struggling for self-control, his teacher appeared at the door of the schoolhouse. Fred caught his eye, and it seemed to look, even if it did not say, “Don’t give up! Be really brave!” The boys received notice during the day and so the brave little boy had no further trouble.
