In most cities you go to, you will see walls outside covered with paintings of names and pictures. This is called graffiti. Some people like these paintings, but others do not. People who like them see this graffiti as art, but others believe it makes cities look terrible and that the people who do it should be arrested.

These days in the UK there are still lots of places where you can paint graffiti because most people like graffiti that has a lot of beautiful colors.

? It is believed that the first graffiti was dated from ancient Greece and Rome. There are still examples of very old graffiti from Greek and Roman cultures. However, modern graffiti started in New York in the early 1970s. It came from parts of the city and the people who wrote it were often teenagers. Graffiti is still part of the city culture in many places in the world today.

Banksy is Britain’s most famous graffiti artist. Banksy’s art is admired around the world. His paintings usually have a political message. Banksy has become very famous, but nobody knows who he really is. Banksy’s art is so popular that people sometimes try to steal it so they can sell it. What makes Banksy angry is that the messages in his art are against the idea of money.

In some cities, tourists can take graffiti tours. One of these cities is Bogota in Colombia. There is a lot of beautiful graffiti in Bogota and much of it shows the history of the country or has a political message. You can also see parts of the city that tourists do not usually go to. The tour is very popular and is also free. However, they ask you to give some money if you like the tour. They use this money to help poor Colombian artists.

Here’s a new warning from health experts: Sitting is deadly. Scientists are increasingly warning that sitting for long periods-even if you also exercise from time to time-could be bad for your health. And it doesn’t matter where the sitting takes place. Several studies suggest people who spend most of their days sitting are more likely to be fat, have a heart attack or even die.

In an article published this week in the British Journal of Sports Medicine, Elin Ekblom-Bak suggested that scientists have to rethink how they define physical activity in order to draw more attention to the dangers of sitting. “After four hours of sitting, the body starts to send harmful signals,” said Ekblom-Bak. She explained that genes regulating the amount of glucose and fat in the body start to shut down.

Even for people who exercise, spending long periods of time sitting at a desk is still harmful. Tim Armstrong, a physical activity expert at the World Health Organization, said it is better for those people to exercise more times across the day rather than in a single bout.

Still, in a study published in 2012 that tracked more than 17,000 Canadians for about a dozen years, researchers found people who sat more had a higher death risk, whether or not they exercised. “We don’t have enough evidence yet to say how much sitting is bad,” said Peter Katzmarzyk of the Pennington Biomedical Research Center, who led the Canadian study. “But it seems the more you can get up from sitting, the better.”

Experts said more research is needed to find out how much sitting is dangerous, and what might be possible to offset those influence. “People should keep exercising because that has a lot of benefits,” Ekblom-Bak said. “But when they’re in the office, they should try to stop sitting as often as possible,” she said.

23The new warning from health experts is to ________.

Aencourage people to do more exercise Bask people not to sit in the same place

Cadvise people not to sit for a long time Dmake people pay attention to a heart disease

24How does sitting too much influence the human body?

AIt results in a lower risk of deat. BIt reduces glucose and fat in the body.

CIt makes people too lazy to do exercise. DIt causes the body to send harmful signals.

25The underlined word “offset” in Paragraph 5 most probably means ________.

    Acause Breduce Cnotice Daccept

26What can we infer from the passage?

AIf people often sit too much, they will put on more weight.

BSitting for hours is harmless to people who do exercise every day.

CPeople had better not sit for more than four hours in a single bout.

DCanadians who did more exercise a day usually had a lower death risk.

    D

“Please, mother, do sit down and let me try my hand,” said Fred Liscom, a bright, active boy, ten years old. Mrs. Liscom, looking pale and worn, was trying to clear away the breakfast she had hardly tasted. She smiled, and said, “You, Fred, you wash dishes?” “Yes, mother,” replied Fred, “Just try me.”

A look of relief came over his mother’s face as she sat in her chair. Fred washed the dishes, and put them in the closet. He then swept the kitchen, kissed his mother goodbye and set out for school. After school, Fred hurried home from school quickly, set the table, and again washed the dishes.

He kept on in this way for two weeks, till his mother was able to do her usual work, and he felt quite rewarded when the doctor, who happened in one day, said, “Well, madam, it’s my opinion that you would have been very sick if you had not kept quiet. You were so busy and tired before.” The doctor did not know what the boy did in order to make his mother “quiet”, nor how nervous the boy was while hearing his words. Fred had given up a great deal of what boys loved, for the purpose of helping his mother.

Besides this, his temper and his patience had been severely tried. He had been in the habit of going early to school, and staying to play after it was dismissed. The boys missed him, and their curiosity was excited. “I will tell you,” said Tom Barton, “I’ll find it out.”

So he called for Fred to go to school, and he walked lightly to the kitchen window. Looking in, he saw Fred standing at the table with a dishcloth in his hand. Then he reported this at school, and various were the greetings poor Fred received at break. “Well, you’re a brave one to stay at home washing dishes.” “Girl boy!”

Fred wanted to fight with some of his classmates, but his awareness of right and his love for his mother helped him. While he was struggling for self-control, his teacher appeared at the door of the schoolhouse. Fred caught his eye, and it seemed to look, even if it did not say, “Don’t give up! Be really brave!” The boys received notice during the day and so the brave little boy had no further trouble.

27Fred wanted to wash the dishes to ________.

Alearn to be more independent Bhelp his mother have a good rest

Cwin high praise from the teachers Dfollow what the doctor asked him to

28The right order of the following is ________.

    a. The classmates laughed at Fred and were punished by the teacher

    b. Fred went home early and helped his mother wash the dishes

    c. The doctor came and said his mother should keep quiet

    d. Tom went to Fred’s house and found out the truth

    Aa-c-d-b Ba-c-b-d Cc-d-b-a Dc-b-d-a

29What can we infer from the last paragraph?

AThe teacher gave the notice to Fred for what he did.

BThe teacher spoke to Fred and encouraged him a lot.

CFred may get on well with his classmates in the following days.

DFred didn’t fight with the classmates because his teacher stopped him.
