As a teen, Cynthia Nebel studied by reading her textbooks and notebooks. “Over and over and over again,” recalls this psychologist at Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tennessee. Now, she adds, “This is a very common bad study habit. Actually, that’s one of the most common bad study skills that students have.”
In one 2021 research study, some college students read a text twice. Others read a text just once. Both groups took a test right after the reading. Test results differed little between these groups, researchers found.
Too often, when students reread material, it’s superficial. Rereading is like looking at the answer to a puzzle (谜语), rather than doing it yourself. It looks like it makes sense. But until you try it yourself, you don’t really know if you understand it.
In one 2022 study, a group of students were asked to reread material to two other groups. One group wrote questions about the material. The other group answered questions from someone else. Later, all the groups took a test on the material. The results showed that those who answered the questions did best; those who just reread the material did worst.
That 2022 study backs up one of Nebel’s preferred study habits. Before big tests, her mom quizzed (测试) her on the material. “Now I know that was retrieval practice (回溯练习),” she says. “It’s one of the best ways you can study.” As Nebel got older, she quizzed herself. For example, she might cover up the definitions (定义) in her notebook. Then she tried to recall what each term meant.
“Make a deck of flash cards every time you learn new information,” Nebel suggests. “Put questions on one side and the answers on the other side.” Friends can even quiz each other on the phone, she says.
But really grill (追问) yourself and your friends, she adds. And here’s why. She was part of a team that asked students to write one quiz question for each class period. Students would then answer a question from another classmate. The results showed that students did worse on tests afterwards than when the daily quiz questions came from the teacher. Nebel’s team is still analyzing the data. She suspects the students’ questions may have been too simple.
Teachers often dig deeper, she notes. They don’t just ask for definitions. Often, teachers ask students to compare and contrast (对比) ideas. That takes some careful thinking.
19.The 2021study is listed to show ________.
A.reading textbooks is a common study skill
B.Cynthia Nebel was a good learner when she was at school
C.reading textbooks over and over helps to improve memory
D.rereading books and notes doesn’t help students learn better
20.The underlined word “superficial” in paragraph 3 most probably means “________.”
A.taking much time and effort B.not being afraid of making mistakes
C.solving problems without much effort D.not studying something carefully or completely.
21.When quizzing yourself or your friends, the best way is to ________.
A.ask for definitions B.retell the questions
C.compare and contrast ideas D.use flash cards to help
22.The article is mainly about ________.
A.the importance of careful thinking B.some practical study skills
C.some common bad study methods D.the role of practice in one’s studies

Online art classes have opened up a convenient space for people to get a start in the world of art. Tang Yingshan, a professor from The Open University of China in Beijing, started an online fine art education program. He believes that everyone can create a masterpiece painting.
Shan Lin, a woman from Guilin, has been learning fine art online for 17 months. She watches guide videos during lunch breaks and practices during her off-work hours. “There is a flexible(灵活的) learning timetable and the guide videos can be played repeatedly for us to have a better understanding,” Shan said. “The courses here don’t cost much and teachers from art schools are invited to give classes.”

Although they have different jobs, they all find a way to express themselves in the world of art. Students at the beginner level are introduced into the world of art by copying world-famous paintings so that they can understand more about the artists’ styles and skills. “I think everybody is a talented painter. Kids are natural inventors. They often create amazing things from simple ideas. Here are a few examples that might make you wonder, “Why didn’t I think of that?”
Popsicles
Popsicles were invented by 11-year-old Frank Epperson in 1905. He forgot a drink of juice and left it with a stir stick in it outside on a cold night. The next day it was ice. Because of this he couldn’t drink it any more, but he could eat it. It tasted good! These ice sticks became popular among kids at school in summer because they were delicious and helped them stay cool. More than a hundred years passed, and popsicles are still one of the best summer treats!
Earmuffs
When 15-year-old Chester Greenwood was ice-skating in Farmington, Maine, in 1873, his ears were so cold that he couldn’t bear it. Although he tried covering his head in a scarf, it was not comfortable. After some thinking, Greenwood made wire into two circles and asked his grandmother to sew fur on them. He then connected them with a steel headband and the first earmuffs were invented!
Crayon holders
When 11-year-old Cassidy Goldstein needed crayons for a school project, she had a hard time because there were so many small or broken ones. She found some small clear plastic tubes at home. Although the tiny tubes were usually filled with water to keep flowers fresh, she found that they fit tightly around the crayons. She was now able to hold them easily. This is how she invented Crayon Holders.
Wristies
While some kids just complain when snow gets in their mittens and their hands get wet, 10-year-old Kathryn Gregory decided to do something about it. She created the first pair of Wristies as she wanted to keep her wrists warm and dry. Wristies are long gloves with no fingers and they are worn under your mittens and coat. They can also be worn alone. They help you when you work in the cold because your hands stay warm while you use your fingers. She also started a business, with her parents’ help, which she still runs today.
All these inventions have one thing in common— ________. If they can do it, you can do it, too!
27.In which order does the writer introduce the inventions?
① ② ③ ④
A.①③②④ B.①③④② C.③①②④ D.③①④②
28.What’s an example of Chester’s creative mind?
A.He found some small clear plastic tubes to hold crayons easily.
B.He used a steel headband to connect the two circles with fur on them.
C.Though it was cold, he thought people would like popsicles in summer.
D.He designed the long gloves with no fingers to keep wrists warm and dry.
29.Which of the following can be put in the “________” in the last paragraph?
A.the kids were quite helpful B.they were invented in winter
C.the ideas came from science class D.the kids tried to solve problems in life
30.How did the writer introduce each invention?
