Orion Jean is a boy from Fort Worth, Texas. He is making a difference in the world with his acts of kindness. And these acts may change the lives of people he has helped.

It all began after a student kindness competition last year where he gave encouraging words to share about taking the first step. “Kindness is a virtue (美德) we can all have, if we are willing to,” he said. “So why not start today? Because right now, it’s what we need more than ever.”

With the $500 prize money he won, Orion gave away toys to a local children’s hospital. Next, he helped prepare 100,000 meals for families in Texas. And now he wants to give books to kids who may not have them and plans to collect 500,000 books in a race to kindness.

To have a good conversation is a pleasure for most people. But not every conversation is good. Sometimes there are uncomfortable silences while people try to think of something to say. Some conversations are one-sided. One person asks all the questions, and the other just gives one-word answers. A good conversation needs two or more people to keep it going.

To get the ball rolling in a conversation, ask something about the other person. “What do you do?” is a good place to start. Or simply say, “Tell me about yourself.” Most people love a chance to talk about themselves.

As the other person begins to respond to（回应） your question, look for common ground. If you ask someone about their weekend, the person could talk about what they did. Then you can share what you did and even your plans for the coming weekend.

When the other person is talking, it is important to be interested in them. Listen carefully and do not cut in to add your experience. When they finish, ask some more questions. Don’t allow your eyes to wander around（游离）as they talk. That gives the message that you’re not really interested in them. Besides, if you’re answering a question, don’t go on and on. Give an answer and stop. A good conversation is a little like a tennis game, in which the ball goes back and forth. Also, avoid yes/no questions. They can stop a conversation. Instead, ask open-ended questions using what or why.

A conversation should end well, too. You can say, “I need to run now.” You may also give a reason. Say something like, “I really need to get going. My class starts in 20 minutes.”

It’s a pity that deaf people or those who have hearing problems can’t enjoy music. Now a vibrating suit brings them hope—it can allow them to “feel” music through their skin, rather than hear it.

Designed by the US technology company Not Impossible Labs, the suit consists of a body harness, ankle and wrist straps.

Music is sent to the suit wirelessly. Then the suit is able to translate it into a range of vibrating pulses, which can be felt at a total of 24 contact points all over the body. The users can adjust the intensity of the vibrations.

Chase Burton, 33, a deaf filmmaker from Texas, has been testing out the suit for four years. He understands that a deaf person’s experience with music is very different. “When I was a kid, I’d sit on the floor above our garage so I could feel the vibrations from my brother’s band rocking out below my body.”

Now when he wears the vibrating suit, he says the sound hits different parts of his body. “Maybe it will strike me down in my ankles first. And then I’ll start to feel the vibrations in my back. And then I’ll feel some pulsations in my wrist,” Burton said.

The designers have been working on extending the tactile musical experience to a larger deaf community. In 2016, a dozen prototype suits were tested at Lady Gaga’s concert in the US. The suit was also tested at a special concert in Las Vegas in 2018. It was given to 150 audience members at the concert, where half the audience members were deaf and half could hear.

At the same time, the company has been improving the technology, saying it’s ready to go to market soon. The suit may be used in live sports broadcasts.

“We truly think that anything that has an audio element can also have a vibrational experience associated with it as well,” the company’s talent and business development director, Jordan Richardson said.
