Medicine is a degree that consists of an endless number of exams, and recently I received my first year results. Waiting for those results was one of the most anxiety-generating experiences.
____1____ Failing brings judgement from others, a topic of discussion for people, and the right for others to say you are not capable. The stress associated with failing is created by others around you, rather than by the event itself.
I have recently been reading The Psychology of Money by Morgan Housel, which clarifies that failure has a strong presence among those who have achieved success. People will always focus on Warren Buffett’s success as an investor. ____2____
The process of achieving success has often involved setbacks and “failures” along the way. I received a “pass” grade on an important research paper during my master’s, which put my final grade in a dangerous situation. I was rejected from medical schools which I’d spent time and effort applying to and preparing for. ____3____ I also began studying Medicine last year.
____4____ But you should know that with each failure you are closer to success, building further layers to the foundations you started. Behind every successful person are more obstacles and setbacks, but these are not as interesting to focus on or as enviable.
The noise around you, whether it be from co-workers, friends or parents, should not shake your belief in your abilities. ____5____ Learn what you need and correct your approach until you reach your success.
A.Failure is your platform to success.
B.You are guaranteed a lifetime of success.
C.I was turned down by countless graduate schemes.
D.You may not be successful the first, second or however many times.
E.Upon reflection I believe that this is partly as a result of the failure itself.
F.Despite all of this, I ended up getting a distinction in my master’s degree.
G.However, rarely will they see how many times his investments have failed.

Emotional pain is part of life. ___6___ Whether the pain is associated with loss, failure, or disappointment, you must develop a strategy to lessen and manage the struggle. By taking action you will learn to cope with emotional pain.
Seek help from those close to you. Asking for help can be awkward. However, if you let someone know that you are trying to make specific changes in your life, it will increase the likelihood of your success. ___7___ It is important for you to let others know what you are trying to achieve.
___8___ Sitting around missing someone will only make you feel worse. Sometimes you need to occupy yourself with new, more interesting things to do. Have you ever thought about learning to play a musical instrument or becoming a master gardener? Now might be your time.
Volunteer your time to a cause. One way of coping with emotional pain is to volunteer your time, resources, or expertise to a worthy cause or individual. Volunteering will help you develop new skills, and begin or strengthen your connection with your community. It can also provide a boost to your self-esteem and personal development. ___9___
Make a plan to build coping skills. Following a problem-solving model will give you a structure for creating change. You must determine clear objectives, carry them out, make adjustments as needed and monitor your progress. ___10___ You can lessen your strict adherence (遵守) to the steps of your plan and maintain positive outcomes.
    A.Focus on the positive.
    B.You will feel a “giver’s high”.
C.Fill your schedule with new agenda items.
D.Knowing that doesn’t seem to make it any easier.
E.Emotional pain, however, can take much longer to wear off.
F.Your new behaviors will build over time and become second nature to you.
G.A strong support network can help you cope with your pain more effectively.

My heart went out to the drama teacher I read about in a recent news item. Each parent from her class insisted that she cast their own child as Snow White. This reminded me of my seventh grade musical — “The Adventures of Tom Sawyer.” I desperately wanted to play the role of Becky, the female lead who was Tom’s girlfriend. ____11____
For starters, Becky had to sing numerous solos, and I couldn’t carry a tune in a bucket. I also didn’t have long blonde curls like pretty Linda Wright who won the part.
I was assigned the non-singing role of Miss Watson, the Maid. I had to wear an ugly dress. And I had only one line to learn, “That’s what I say.” ____12____ Miss Watson was onstage in quite a few scenes, and got to repeat “That’s what I say” throughout the play.
At last, our production was put onstage. Imagine my surprise when Miss Watson made the audience laugh out loud each time I piped in with “That’s what I say.” I hadn’t known that she — or I — could be funny, or that her character was important in moving the plot along. ____13____
That night, I began to understand that being the star may not be any more fun than being a stand-out in a supporting role. Each person, onstage and backstage, is essential in theater. Without everyone doing their part, the play would be dull as dirt. ____14____ If everyone’s a star then nothing gets done. It’s all noise and chaos.
And so I believe all children should get the opportunity to play Miss Watson, to become someone they didn’t know they wanted to be. ____15____
    A.So it is in life.
    B.It was not to be.
C.It was anything but a great part.
D.My Miss Watson turned out to be a hit.
E.It took the entire cast to make a good show.
F.There was an advantage, in my opinion, though.
G.I would hope all children could be a hit in life.

How to stop glasses fogging up with a face mask
Wearing a mask keeps you safe during the pandemic, but it come with its own set of challenges. And, one of the biggest drawbacks of wearing a mask is how much your glasses fog up and affect your vision. Taking off your glasses to wipe them clean each time it fogs up is not only frustrating, but it can also increase the risk of infection. ___16___ Here are some tricks to stop it.
    Twist your mask strings.
From the side, once you twist it, the strings will look like the figure eight. This is great for stopping fogging because it redirects your breath by putting slight downward pressure on the top part of the mask. ___17___ This may leave you infected by virus.
    ___18___
If you wash your glasses with soap, this creates a thin film on your lenses which limits fogging. Use a fragrance-free soap and mix it with warm water. Put your glasses in it and let it air dry. When you wear your glasses next, soap molecules on your lenses should block fogging.
    Use tissues.
You can put a tissue under the top part of the mask. ___19___ To do this DIY trick properly, you should fold a tissue in half and place the straight edge along the bridge of your nose.
Change the position of your masks and glasses.
___20___ But if you do this there are a few things to keep in mind. Firstly, you need to make sure that your mask still covers your chin(下巴)after you pull it up. And, if your prescription is stronger, this trick could impact your vision and cause increased blurriness.
    A.Put glasses in the water.
    B.Wash your glasses with soap.
C.It will help catch air and damp, keeping your glasses free of fog.
D.So the key is to prevent or minimize fogging due to face masks.
E.Cover your chin with masks to prevent need for repositioning when talking.
F.Though, it’s worth noting that it does create a slight gap between the mask and your face.
G.Pull up your mask and draw your glasses down, blocking your breath from rising upwards.

Climate change has increased average temperatures by 1℃ over the past century, making heat waves more frequent and intense than those from any other point in recorded history. ____21____ A study published in the journal Nature Climate Change found global warming responsible for 37 percent of heat-related deaths between 1991 and 2018.
The following is what happens if you’re the next to be killed. First, your brain sends a series of messages to your sweat glands telling them to increase sweat production. Then your heart starts beating faster to pump blood to the skin while blood flow is directed away from important organs(器官) like your liver, kidneys and gut. ____22____
If heat stroke occurs, your body might get hot and direct so much oxygen-rich blood to the skin that it suffocates(把…闷死) vital internal organs. If your body fails to cool you down, its internal temperature might start to climb from a normal level to about 104 degrees. ____23____ You may feel it start as a dull headache. Before long, you might lose consciousness. Your brain might begin to swell.
While you struggle to stay awake and avoid dizzying confusion, the excessive internal heat is damaging your gut, consequently causing an inflammatory(发炎的) response. ____24____
That’s just part of what we know about how extreme heat kills you. ____25____ A lot of what we know comes from studies on animal models, like mice and rats, or from examinations of people dying of heat stroke.
A.As the heat rises quickly, so does the death number.
B.That’s because we can’t study it in humans in the laboratory.
C.As temperatures tick ever higher, that figure may well rise.
D.At that temperature, your brain becomes affected.
E.Surviving the organ failure might require an emergency transplant.
F.Sometimes that alone is enough to create problems for a weak or aging heart.
G.Left untreated, what follows is a flood of organ failure that leads to your death.

Do you like to exercise? ___26___ Do you prefer playing a team sport, like volleyball or baseball? Or do you like to run for miles and miles all by yourself? Maybe you would rather lift weights or do push-ups or sit-ups!
You know that exercise is good for your body. It helps you grow stronger. It can also help keep your heart and other important organs in excellent shape. But can it make you smarter?
Maybe! The work you do at school every day is like exercise for your brain. Learning and thinking can help you become smarter. ___27___
Some researchers point out that exercise stimulates the body’s nervous system, causing it to release chemicals that make us feel happy and calm. This helps to explain why many people feel more alive and active after exercising. ___28___ On the whole, you can work or study at a higher level after exercise.
Others point to studies that show that exercise can stimulate the growth of new brain cells. As your brain gets bigger, the areas in connection with memory and learning get bigger and brain function improves.
___29___ Experts believe that as little as 15-30 minutes per day three times a week may be enough to improve brain performance. Thirty to sixty minutes per day four to five times a week is even better.
Exercise is good for your body in so many ways, so include as much exercise as you can into your daily or weekly routine. ___30___
A.But how can physical exercise help?
B.Can you explain why exercise matters?
C.What is your favorite way to exercise?
D.Basically, exercising can help you do whatever you do better.
E.And if you feel better, you can think more clearly and focus better.
F.Just take it easy starting until your body is ready to get more exercise.
G.So how much exercise do you need to help your brain work at its best?

How tall are you? Do you tower over your friends and family - or are they people you literally have to look up to? ____31____ But do you know that there’s a possibility that we’re all getting taller?
Of course, our height is out of our control. ____32____ The idea that being taller gives you more power and authority might be a tall story, but according to David Robson, writing for BBC Future, “on the basis of first impressions alone, taller people may have the edge.” He adds that various studies have found that the greater your height, the higher you score on measures of happiness and enjoyment of life.
____33____ Scientists have known for a long time that humans with good diets and reliable access to food tend to grow taller and mature more quickly. Adult height in some countries has rocketed as they transformed into a developed society.
In a recent study scientists have discovered a brain receptor, called MC3R, linked to our growing process. ____34____ “It tells the body we’re great here and we’ve got lots of food, so grow quickly, have puberty (发育期) soon and make lots of babies. This discovery could lead to drugs to improve muscle mass and treat delayed growth,” UK researchers say.
For those eager to be taller, we need to look at the Dutch, who stand head and shoulders above the rest of us as the tallest people in the world. But, of course tall people have to stoop (俯身) through doorways and struggle to fit in cars and can have joint and cardiovascular problems. ____35____
A.Are you getting as tall as you want to be?
B.It’s a biological fact influenced partly by genetics.
C.So maybe we should be careful for what we wish for.
D.Obviously, we’re not all the same, and size doesn’t really matter.
E.It’s thought to be the crucial link between food and sex development and growth.
F.There is a ceiling for height, and it’s reached when people achieve their genetic potential.
G.If this makes you want to be taller, it’s good to know we are taller than we were 150 years ago.

Owning a pet is a fun and rewarding experience. But every animal and their needs are different, so how can you make sure that you choose the right one for you? ___36___
    Do your research
You may like the look of a particular pet but that doesn’t mean they’re right for you. ___37___,so think carefully about what you want from your pet and do some research before you take one on. Some breeds may require more vet care than others. Flat faced breeds such as French bulldogs and pugs can suffer a number of health issues over their lifetime.
    Think about your lifestyle
For example, if you work full time and you want a dog, who would take care of them during the day? If you want a cat, will they have access to outside space while you’re out? ___38___
    ___39___
From everyday things like insurance, food and toys to unexpected vet bills, having a pet is certainly a financial commitment. Make sure you factor in how much your new pet will cost before you choose them.
    Think about a rescue pet
Thousands of homeless pets are desperate for a good home. Charities like Blue Cross can offer support and advice about individual pets and help you find the right one for you. ___40___
    A.Do your sums
    B.Finance comes first
C.Here are some top tips from national pet charity Blue Cross.
D.They will be vaccinated so they offer great value compared to buying from a seller.
E.Don’t purchase online with multiple breeds or types of pets-they may be cruel to pets.
F.Take the requirements of different pets into account to make sure they’re the right choice.
G.Every pet has its own personality and certain breeds of animals often have strong characteristics.

According to a common saying, “Honesty is the best policy.” ___41___ Lying often seems like a good way to impress people or avoid blame for mistakes. Some people lie out of habit, without even realizing they’re doing it. But despite all this, honesty really is worth the effort.
One obvious reason for honesty is that lies are difficult to maintain. There’s always a chance that the person you lied to will find out the truth. ___42___
Lies are also difficult to hide because they are harder to remember than the truth. If you make up a story, you have to remember all the details. ___43___ But if you commit to telling the truth, you will never have trouble remembering. This saves you effort and makes conversations less stressful for you.
Another obvious reason to avoid lying is that lying can harm others. People who believe your lies might make bad decisions because of them. And a lie about someone else could destroy that person’s reputation. On a personal level, if your friends find out you lied to them, their feeling will be hurt. They will question whether they can trust you or wonder whether you care about them. In contrast, if you always tell the truth, you will develop a reputation for honesty. ___44___ Business deals, friendships, family and romantic relationships all depend on trust
___45___ Sometimes it’s best to remain silent if your words might hurt someone else. Honesty means that when you speak, you tell the truth without holding any information back. When you do that, you will feel more relaxed and enjoy stronger relationships.
A.This will help you in every area of your life.
B.But in daily life, honesty can be difficult.
C.Is the gain from lying really worth the risk?
D.We will get others’ respect and appreciation if telling the truth0
E.Being honest is a basic principle for us to deal with others.
F.Honesty, however, doesn’t mean you have to say everything in your mind.
G.And the more lies you tell, the more stories you have to remember.

If you’ve ever been bitten by a mosquito, you know how frustrating their bites can be. ____46____ , creating an itch (痒) that once you start scratching only seems to get worse. Why does a mosquito bite itch and what can we do?
Why does a mosquito bite itch?
When a mosquito bites you, it pierces the skin using a special mouthpart to suck up blood and injects saliva (唾液) into your skin. Mosquitoes’ saliva has lots of proteins in it, some of which our body recognizes as foreign, and our immune cells spring into action to try to fight them. ____47____ . It’s actually the body’s response to the foreign mosquito protein it is trying to fight. That’s why some people may only have a mild reaction to bites, while others, more sensitive to the foreign protein, react with large areas of swelling that are more painful.
What helps resist the urge to scratch?
“Don’t scratch” is the advice that most experts and health professionals give. As hard and sometimes unrealistic as it can sound, scratching inflames (发炎) the skin, and the inflammation makes the skin itch more. “ ____48____ ,” warned Daniel Markowski, technical adviser for the American Mosquito Control Association, adding that in extreme cases, people can scar themselves.
Instead, there are dozens of creams and sprays that promise itch relief as well as home remedy (疗法). Choose what’s right for you can often come down to trial and error. In general, all of the various anti-itch creams are very similar. There is no scientific evidence these remedies work, and they can come with their own precautions or side effects. ____49____ .
    ____50____
Some people can have serious allergic reactions to mosquitoes, although in practice it is rare, Vosshall said. If you experience severe symptoms such as breathing trouble, you should seek medical attention immediately.
    A.When to seek medical attention?
B.What to do with a mosquito bite?
C.It’s not the bite that causes the itch
D.The more you scratch, the more they itch
E.The little red bumps swell up almost immediately
F.Scratching can cause secondary infections and prolong the irritation
G.In fact, the best remedy to fight the itch is to prevent a bite in the first place

From the dawn of civilization, paper records have been a method of keeping track of important and necessary documentation. A common experience throughout the world's record keeping has been the necessity to ensure that all documents are kept together, and none are lost.
___51___ These included tying ribbons through the paper, and melting wax to secure the papers in place. For nearly 600 years, these were the methods used to secure papers.
___52___ In 1835, a machine that could mass-produce straight pins was invented by Howe J. L. , an American inventor. Although straight pins (大头针)were originally designed for sewing and tailoring, people began using them as a quick and easy way to secure papers. ___53___ In 1899 he patented the device, which consisted of a wire bent into a particularly shaped hoop for the purpose of securing papers.
During this time, however, the paperclip (回形针)was not a widely distributed device. Therefore, the Gem Manufacturing Company of England developed a machine to manufacture and standardize the paperclip design. ___54___
Today the paperclip is a famous invention used throughout offices, schoolrooms, and business throughout the world. ___55___
A.The next paper invention was that of the straight pin.
B.Before the paper clip, people had to be creative to keep paper together.
C.The humble item only came into popular usage around the mid-19th century.
D.Later, inspired by the straight pin, Norwegian Vaaler J. came up with the idea of the first paperclip.
E.This manufacturing development allowed for the expansion of the modern paperclip worldwide.
F.Being a wonder of simplicity and function, the paperclip remains a standard office supply throughout the world.
G.Therefore, from the early 13th century people had created various methods to ensure documents were kept together.

We’ve been test-driving some new cars recently. I appreciate the clean and simple design inside. For some reasons, many car makers have been shifted from physical controls to touch screens. ____56____ Instead of lots of physical buttons, you have a single touch screen. You can use it to move between the different controls.
The touch screen is a single system for many controls in your car. So simple? Actually, not simple at all. ____57____ It will always be more challenging to use. It will likely take more time to use for each function. Worse still, the touch screen may also put you at greater risk of being in an accident.
In a car with buttons and other physical controls, you can often perform the same tasks without looking. ____58____ And you most likely receive physical feedback (反馈) through your fingers letting you know you’ve succeeded. Buttons are probably faster than touch screens. With a button, you reach over and easily get your fingers on it.
____59____ They may be effective, but many also require multiple attempts to work. If you’ve ever asked your phone to do something, you know there are still challenges in speech recognition.
However, if you need to use the touch screen to control systems in your car, I have a few suggestions. Get your basic setup running before your car is running down the road. If you have a passenger, let that person control the touch screen. ____60____
A.But this also means extra steps for each action.
B.The touch screen is far more complex than buttons.
C.New cars are often completely touch screen-controlled.
D.Physical controls have great advantages over touch screens.
E.Always keep your eyes on the road instead of the fancy screen.
F.You know when your hand is in the right place to use the controls.
G.Some cars with touch screen controls can respond to voice commands.

I have a drawer full of letters to Santa. Each year my children would write up their Christmas wish lists. They were polite requests for the latest game or toy. As the children got older, they would give Santa some hints(提示)on where to buy their presents. ____61____
Those letters taught my children a valuable lesson about writing: It has a purpose. Sometimes our purpose is to achieve something;other times it may be to entertain, inform, or persuade. ____62____ And when writing doesn’t seem to have any purpose or get any kind of meaningful response, then it can be hard to get excited about doing it.
Christmas is a great time of year for children to communicate with others through writing. When children write for real audiences and real purposes, they can learn to choose their words accordingly. ____63____ You write “Dear Santa” because you don’t know him personally and you want to show him respect.
____64____ Texting, online messaging, live chats while playing video games all mean that they are constantly producing written messages. However, because they are usually writing to family and friends, they use informal language most of the time.
There is nothing wrong with this kind of writing. It suits the audience and the purpose and gets the job done. ____65____ This type of writing won’t be rewarded by the school examiner, nor by a future employer or a potential client. The very best communicators are those who know how to adjust their language to match their audience.
A.It isn’t that these young people can’t write.
B.But it is always purposeful-or at least it should be.
C.The age of pen-and-paper letter writing may have passed.
D.As a result, each year they received something they wanted.
E.You write “Hi Nanna and Pop” because you are close to them.
F.As technology develops, young people are writing more than they ever have.
G.But if this is the only kind of writing young people do, it will cause problems.

They say once you learn how to ride a bike, you never forget. Most of us learnt when we were kids, and many still put on our helmets, put our feet on the pedals, and shoot off for a ride around the streets. ____66____ Then the question is what makes it so appealing to people to ride their bikes once again.
First, let’s look at the health benefits. Cycling can improve cardiovascular (心血管的) health, burn excess body fat and strengthen your leg muscles. ____67____ For example, a long ride in the countryside could help you to clear your mind, or de-stress.
____68____ By cycling, you save money on fuel or train fares. If you do drive into work, sometimes finding somewhere to park can be a nightmare, whereas finding somewhere to chain your bike up can be much simpler. Then, on the train, there are changes at stations and other commuters speaking loudly on their phones to deal with. ____69____ And if you’re worried about safety, there are designated cycle lanes in many major cities. Wearing high-visibility clothing, sometimes referred to as ‘hi-vis’, is another way to improve your safety when cycling on the roads.
Finally, cycling can also be good for the environment. It can help you to reduce your carbon footprint. ____70____
So, whether people wan to cycle for their health, getting about town, their wallet, the environment, or a combination of all of them — the popularity of cycling is on the rise.
A.Cyclists face neither of these issues.
B.In recent times, cycling has seen a boost in popularity.
C.There are also some plus sides for your wallet’s health.
D.And cycling’s benefits aren’t just physical but mental as well.
E.Not pumping out fumes into the atmosphere is better for the planet.
F.Why are so many people still crazy about cycling when they grow up?
G.Cycling can be a great way to travel to and from work or get about town.

The best way to learn new skills has been widely debated. In 2008, Malcolm Gladwell published Outliers, which introduced the so-called “10,000 hours rule” that states it takes 10,000 hours to become an expert in a subject.
____71____Let’s break down what this involves.
You’re willing to learn from people you don’t like.
We tend to get annoyed with people who don’t share our view of the world.____72____That’s exactly why they offer opportunities to learn. You don’t need to buy into someone’s values about the world to learn from them and they can offer a new perspective.
    ____73____
Stick to one comfortable mode of learning is a bad idea. Master learners are willing to learn from lots of sources, including the following: technical dry books or manuals, YouTube or Instagram, calling or visiting people they don’t know, searching the internet and through friendships and social relationships.
You can reflect on your work and think outside of the box.
Master learners don’t just become good in their field. They think about what they learn in ways that aren’t focused on one topic. ____74____ They allow their minds to move in creative ways and connect seemingly diverse concepts and tools that other people don’t connect.
You approach learning with your learning objectives in mind.
I love learning about other people’s learning processes. I once watched a video made by a medical student who stopped going to lectures. She recognized that the lectures weren’t as efficient or effective as reading her own books.
Master learners don’t follow someone else’s learning plan. For example, they don’t use one learning app for hundreds of lessons without exploring other options. ____75____
A.You’re willing to try out different thinking styles.
B.You’re ready to learn through different modes and channels.
C.People who are different from us will tend to approach problems differently.
D.But from a psychological perspective, what makes someone a master learner?
E.They develop their own learning plan based on their specific learning objectives.
F.The smartest, most creative people don’t rely solely on focus for getting things done.
G.To add to our learning, we’ll need to be willing to learn from people who we don’t personally like.

Christmas is approaching. That means drinking hot chocolate, eating a roast dinner and making a snowman. ___76___
Australia is in the Southern Hemisphere. That means when it’s winter in the Northern Hemisphere, it’s summer in Australia. So that’s right, you guessed it. Christmas time in Australia is a very hot and sweaty affair!
On Christmas Day, people don’t like to eat hot turkeys or heavy meals. They like to have a BBQ and eat outside in the evening. Many families will play sports and games together in the evening too, enjoying the cooler weather. ___77___
___78___ You could say that in a way it makes them feel nice and cool because it’s so hot! They still have Christmas trees and Santa still wears winter clothes. They know he comes from the North Pole, where it’s cold, so that’s why. I used to think Santa must like coming to Australia because many other places he visits are just too cold!
But some Christmas songs have been given a “hot” twist (改编). ___79___ It changed the original line from “Oh what fun it is to ride in my one-horse open sleigh(雪橇)” to “Christmas in Australia on a scorching summer’s day”. Singing these kinds of songs is a nice way to acknowledge the unique way that Australians spend Christmas.
One year, I went to Canada to see some relatives at Christmas time. On the morning of Christmas, I woke up to the sight of fresh snow outside. I was so excited. “Now this really looks like Christmas,” I thought to myself.
___80___ So, no matter whether you are freezing cold or boiling hot, as long as your loved ones are nearby, the Christmas spirit will be there.
A.Still, they sing the same Christmas songs, all about snow.
B.The followings are what Australians usually do at Christmas.
C.But of course, the real meaning of Christmas is to be with your loved ones.
D.People who live near the ocean might go to the beach and play on the sand.
E.For example, there is an Australian version of the famous Jingle Bells carol.

For making contact and communicating with a person, effective eye contact is essential to our everyday interaction with people, and also to those who want to be effective communicators in public places. ____81____.
Generally in Western societies and many other cultures, eye contact with a person is expected to be regular but not overly persistent. ____82____, causing the person who’s the object of a person’s stare to feel overly studied and uncomfortable.
____83____. The New Zealand Medical Journal reported that one reason so many young children fall victim to attacks by pet dogs is their overly-lasting eye contact with pets, which causes them to feel threatened and defensive.

In the case of people who try to lie to someone, they may distort (扭曲) their eye contact so that they’re not avoiding it. ____84____. But on the contrary, evasive (逃避的) eye contact is a sign of discomfort. Why do we avoid looking at a person? It may be because we feel ashamed to be looking at them if we’re being dishonest of trying to take them in. Evasive eye contact may also a sign of dishonesty.
However, Scotland’s University of Stirling found that, in a question-and-answer study among children, those who maintained eye contact were less likely to come up with the correct answer to a question than those who looked away to consider their response. ____85____, when this energy could be spent on deep thinking.

It’s regularly claimed that you’ll be more productive if you get up early. Very early. According to a 2016 Wall Street Journal article, the most successful and therefore productive people typically rise at 4 a. m. ____91____ For instance, if you’re awake while everyone else is still asleep, they won’t distract you, so you’ll be more productive.
However, the science tells a very different story. ____92____ An important one stems from our own biology. Sleep is crucial for our ability to function, and depriving yourself of it does more harm than good.
____93____ Less than that quickly has negative health effects, compromising mood, memory, stress tolerance, and more. Forcing yourself to wake at 4 a. m means you’re losing sleep, and will be less productive as a result.
Some people seem able to get away with it, being natural “early risers”. ____94____ A study by the National Sleep Foundation stated that “Individuals who habitually sleep outside the normal range may be exhibiting symptoms of serious health problems or even may be compromising their health and well- being”. Another study claims sleeping far fewer hours than average is more likely to be self-enforced than anything natural. ____95____

The China State Council issued a document in early August, suggesting employers across the country make flexible working arrangements and give their workers Friday afternoons off during hot summer days in order to boost tourism and consumption.
Online surveys have shown that most correspondents are in favor of the State Council’s proposal for longer weekends, as two and a half days are enough even for one to plan a short journey. People will have more time to be together with their families. ____96____
However, there are doubts as to whether this well-intentioned initiative can be put into practice. ____97____ While the regular two-day weekend is still a dream for a large number of working people in various industries, a two-and-half-day weekend is really a luxury many people can barely afford.
____98____ If staff workers of government departments and public institutions no longer work on Friday afternoons, local residents will have nowhere to go if they have urgent issues to solve through these establishments.
Obviously, the only way out is to implement policies concerning paid annual leave in a realistic manner so that the working people can make arrangements for their days off work. As a result, holidaymakers don’t need to all rush to the same scenic spots during the same period of time, which would be beneficial to the protection and operation of these spots. ____99____ Thus it serves the initial purpose of boosting economic growth through developing tourism.
____100____ The government is supposed to pay more attention to the protection of labor rights and employ all possible means to ensure their holidays as well as the functions of government institutions, instead of just making economically motivated policies.
A.Also, this is an effective way to increase consumer spending.
B.The right of workers to rest and paid annual leave are protected under the law.
C.A larger number of workers, if not all, will benefit from official holiday arrangements.
D.Most people think that they will actually not be able to enjoy the benefits of such a scheme.
E.After rest and relaxation, employees will become more energetic when they come back to work.
F.Another worry is that this measure will finally be exclusively (专有地) enjoyed by a limited number of employees.
G.As long as paid annual leave remains unrealistic in most industrial sectors, the two-and-half-day weekend seems pointless.

7.本段的主题句是“Seek help from those close to you.(向你亲近的人寻求帮助。)”,因此本段是关于寻求帮助的,G选项“A strong support network can help you cope with your pain more effectively.(一个强大的支持网络可以帮助你更有效地应对你的痛苦。)”
8.空格处是本段的主题句,由空后的“Sitting around missing someone will only make you feel worse. Sometimes you need to occupy yourself with new, more interesting things to do.(坐在那里想念一个人只会让你感觉更糟。有时你需要做一些新的、更有趣的事情。)”可知,本段主要讲的是要找一些新的事情来做,C选项“Fill your schedule with new agenda items.(用新的议程项目填满你的日程表。)”

11.根据空格前的句子“I desperately wanted to play the role of Becky, the female lead who was Tom’s girlfriend.(我非常想扮演贝基这个角色,她是汤姆的女朋友)”可知,作者非常想扮演贝基这个角色,但是根据空格后的句子“For starters, Becky had to sing numerous solos, and I couldn’t carry a tune in a bucket. I also didn’t have long blonde curls like pretty Linda Wright who won the part.(首先,贝基要唱很多次独唱,而我却不会唱歌。 我也没有像赢得这个角色的漂亮的琳达·赖特那样有长长的金色卷发)”可知,因为作者自身的条件,她演贝基这个角色是不可能的。由空格前后的内容可知,空格处的句子是一个承上启下的句子,所以B项“It was not to be.(这是不可能的)”符合题意。故选B项。
12.根据空格后的句子“Miss Watson was onstage in quite a few scenes, and got to repeat “That’s what I say” throughout the play.(沃森小姐在舞台上有好几场戏,在整出戏中她都要重复说‘那就是我说的’)”和下文“Miss Watson was onstage in quite a few scenes, and got to repeat “That’s what I say” throughout the play.(沃森小姐在舞台上有好几场戏,在整个剧中都要重复“我就是这么说的”)”可知,作者虽然扮演的是个小角色,但是,作者认为对她来说是好事,因为她只需要说一句台词“那就是我说的”。所以F项“There was an advantage, in my opinion, though.(不过,在我看来,这还是有好处的)”符合题意,空格后的句子是对空格处句子的解释。故选F项。
13.根据空格前的句子“Imagine my surprise when Miss Watson made the audience laugh out loud each time I piped in with ‘That’s what I say.’ I hadn’t known that she — or I — could be funny, or that her character was important in moving the plot along. (想象一下,每当我插嘴说‘我就是这么说的’时,沃森小姐都能让观众哄堂大笑,我有多惊讶。我不知道她——或者我——可以很有趣,也不知道她的这个角色在推进剧情中很重要)”可知,作者扮演的沃森小姐很受欢迎、很成功。所以D项“My Miss Watson turned out to be a hit.(我的沃森小姐很受欢迎)”符合题意。故选D项。
14.由空格前的句子“Each person, onstage and backstage, is essential in theater. Without everyone doing their part, the play would be dull as dirt.(在戏剧中,台上和后台的每个人都是必不可少的。如果没有每个人都各司其职,这出戏就会枯燥乏味)”可知,作者认为在戏剧中,台上和后台的每个人都是必不可少的。而根据空格后的句子“If everyone’s a star then nothing gets done. It’s all noise and chaos.(如果每个人都是明星,那么什么都做不了。到处都是噪音和混乱)”可知,作者把演戏和生活联系在一起,生活中也不可能人人都是明星。所以,空格处的句子应该是一个承上启下的句子,A项“So it is in life.(在生活中也是如此)”符合题意。故选A项。
15.由第四段的句子“Imagine my surprise when Miss Watson made the audience laugh out loud each time I piped in with ‘That’s what I say.’ I hadn’t known that she — or I — could be funny, or that her character was important in moving the plot along. (想象一下,每当我插嘴说‘我就是这么说的’时,沃森小姐都能让观众哄堂大笑,我有多惊讶。我不知道她——或者我——可以很有趣,也不知道她的这个角色在推进剧情中很重要)”可知,作者扮演的沃森小姐很受欢迎、很成功。再由空格前的句子“And so I believe all children should get the opportunity to play Miss Watson, to become someone they didn’t know they wanted to be.(所以我认为所有的孩子都应该有机会扮演沃森小姐,成为一个他们不知道自己想成为的人)”可知,作者认为所有的孩子都应该有机会扮演沃森小姐,也就是说所有的孩子都有机会成功。所以G项“I would hope all children could be a hit in life.(我希望所有的孩子都能在生活中成功)”符合题意。

16.上文“Taking off your glasses to wipe them clean each time it fogs up is not only frustrating, but it can also increase the risk of infection. (每当眼镜起雾时,摘下眼镜把它擦干净不仅令人沮丧,还会增加感染的风险)”说明戴口罩使眼镜起雾所带来的问题;下文“Here are some tricks to stop it.(这里有一些技巧可以阻止它)”指出有些技巧可以防止眼镜起雾;D选项“So the key is to prevent or minimize fogging due to face masks.(因此,关键是防止或尽量减少口罩造成的雾气)”起到承上启下的作用,“the key”指出上文中问题的解决方法,“fogging due to face masks”是下文“it”所指代的内容。故选D。
17.上文“ This is great for stopping fogging because it redirects your breath by putting slight downward pressure on the top part of the mask.”(这对防止起雾非常好,因为它通过在口罩顶部施加轻微的向下压力来改变你呼出的气体的方向)阐述了“Twist your mask strings.(扭扭你的口罩绳)”所起到的防止起雾的作用以及原理;下文“This may leave you infected by virus.(这可能会让你被病毒感染)”说明可能会出现的问题,所以设空处应填与上文表示转折关系,同时又承接下文的句子,F选项“Though, it’s worth noting that it does create a slight gap between the mask and your face.(不过,值得注意的是,它确实会在口罩和你的脸之间产生一个微小的间隙)”符合语意,故选F。
由下文 “If you wash your glasses with soap, this creates a thin film on your lenses which limits fogging. (如果你用肥皂洗眼镜,这会在镜片上形成一层薄膜,从而限制起雾)”可知,这一段主要讲用肥皂水洗眼镜可以防止眼镜起雾,所以B选项“Wash your glasses with soap.(用肥皂洗你的眼镜)”可以概括此段大意,故选B。
19.上文“You can put a tissue under the top part of the mask.(你可以在口罩的上部垫上一张纸巾)”阐述了纸巾的用法,C选项“It will help catch air and damp, keeping your glasses free of fog.(它将有助于吸收空气和潮湿,使您的眼镜没有雾)”承接上文,阐述了在口罩上部垫上纸巾是如何防止眼镜起雾的,符合语意,故选C。

22.根据前文的“Then your heart starts beating faster to pump blood to the skin while blood flow is directed away from important organs(器官) like your liver, kidneys and gut. (然后你的心跳开始加快,将血液泵入皮肤,而血液则从肝脏、肾脏和肠道等重要器官流向别处。)”可知,此处从热浪对身体各个器官产生影响的机理入手,对热浪造成死亡的原因进行分析,由此后文应该阐述的该消极影响所产生的后果。F选项“Sometimes that alone is enough to create problems for a weak or aging heart.(有时,这本身就足以给虚弱或衰老的心脏带来问题。)”中的that指代的是前文中“First, your brain sends a series of messages to your sweat glands telling them to increase sweat production. (首先,你的大脑向汗腺发送一系列信息,告诉它们增加汗液的分泌。)”或“Then your heart starts beating faster to pump blood to the skin while blood flow is directed away from important organs(器官) like your liver, kidneys and gut.(然后你的心跳开始加快,将血液泵入皮肤,而血液则从肝脏、肾脏和肠道等重要器官流向别处。)”
23.根据前文的“If your body fails to cool you down, its internal temperature might start to climb from a normal level to about 104 degrees.(如果你的身体不能给你降温,它的内部温度可能会从正常水平攀升到104华氏度左右。)” D选项“At that temperature, your brain becomes affected.(在那种温度下,你的大脑会受到影响。)”
24.根据前文“While you struggle to stay awake and avoid dizzying confusion, the excessive internal heat is damaging your gut, consequently causing an inflammatory(发炎的) response.(当你努力保持清醒,避免眼花缭乱的混乱时,过多的内热正在损害你的肠道,从而导致炎症反应。)” G选项“Left untreated, what follows is a flood of organ failure that leads to your death.(如果不及时治疗,随之而来的是大量器官衰竭,最终导致死亡。)”
25.根据后文的“A lot of what we know comes from studies on animal models, like mice and rats, or from examinations of people dying of heat stroke.(我们知道的很多信息都来自于对动物模型的研究,比如小鼠和大鼠,或者来自对中暑死亡者的检查。)” 故B选项“That’s because we can’t study it in humans in the laboratory.(这是因为我们无法在实验室中对人类进行研究。)”

27.根据前文“The work you do at school every day is like exercise for your brain. Learning and thinking can help you become smarter.( 你每天在学校做的工作就像对大脑的锻炼。学习和思考可以帮助你变得更聪明。)”可知,此处强调你每天在学校做的事就像是让你的大脑进行运动,学习和思考可以帮助你变得更聪明,解释了“运动”和“变聪明”之间的关系。故A项用“But how can physical exercise help?( 但是体育锻炼能有什么帮助呢?)” 故选A。
28.根据上文“Some researchers point out that exercise stimulates the body’s nervous system, causing it to release chemicals that make us feel happy and calm. This helps to explain why many people feel more alive and active after exercising.(一些研究人员指出,锻炼可以刺激身体的神经系统,使其释放出让我们感到快乐和平静的化学物质。这有助于解释为什么许多人在运动后感到更有活力和活力。)”可知,本段主要按照逻辑顺序解释了运动如何使人变得更聪明。运动会刺激人体的神经系统,使其释放让我们感到开心和平静的化学物质,这样我们在运动过后就会变得更有活力,故E项“And if you feel better, you can think more clearly and focus better.(而如果你感觉更好的话,你就能更清晰地思考,更好地集中精力)”承接上文,指出变得更有活力之后的结果,符合语境。故选E。

31.根据前文的“How tall are you? Do you tower over your friends and family—or are they people you literally have to look up to? (你有多高?你比你的朋友和家人都高还是他们都比你高?)”可知,人们的个头是不一样的;根据后文的“But do you know that there’s a possibility that we’re all getting taller?(但你知道我们都有可能长高吗?)”
32.根据前文的“Of course, our height is out of our control.(当然,我们无法控制自己的身高。)”可知,下一句可以解释其原因;根据后文的“The idea that being taller gives you more power and authority might be a tall story, but according to David Robson, writing for BBC Future, “on the basis of first impressions alone, taller people may have the edge.” He adds that various studies have found that the greater your height, the higher you score on measures of happiness and enjoyment of life.(个子高就会有更多的权力和权威的说法可能是无稽之谈,但根据大卫·罗布森为BBC Future撰写的文章,“仅从第一印象来看,个子高的人可能更有优势”。他补充说,各种研究发现,你越高,你在幸福和享受生活方面的得分就越高。)”可知,这是在描述现实中高个子带来的好处。B项(这是一个生物学事实,部分受遗传的影响。)指出了我们无法控制自己身高的原因,承接上文,从而引出对后文的传统看法“个子高就会有更多的权力和权威的”的讨论,因此该项与上下文连接通顺。故选B项。
33.根据后文的“Scientists have known for a long time that humans with good diets and reliable access to food tend to grow taller and mature more quickly. Adult height in some countries has rocketed as they transformed into a developed society.(科学家们早就知道,饮食良好、食物来源可靠的人往往会长得更高、成熟得更快。一些国家在向发达社会转型的过程中,成年人的身高直线上升。)”可知,成年的个子变高的因素在于良好的饮食和可靠的食物来源,G项(如果这让你想要更高,那很高兴知道我们比150年前高了。)中的“this”指代的便是这一点,我们比150年前更高的事实也说明了这一点,因此该项与下文连接通顺。故选G项。
34.根据前文的“In a recent study scientists have discovered a brain receptor, called MC3R, linked to our growing process.(在最近的一项研究中,科学家们发现了一种名为MC3R的大脑受体,它与我们的成长过程有关。)”可知,MC3R对于成长而言很重要;根据后文的““It tells the body we’re great here and we’ve got lots of food, so grow quickly, have puberty soon and make lots of babies. This discovery could lead to drugs to improve muscle mass and treat delayed growth,” UK researchers say.(英国研究人员说,它告诉身体,我们在这里很好,我们有很多食物,所以成长得很快,早点进入青春期,生很多孩子。这一发现可能会带来改善肌肉质量和治疗生长迟缓的药物”。)”可知,这是在讲述MC3R的具体作用。 E项(它被认为在食物和性发育和生长之间起到了关键的联系作用。)中的“it”指代的是前文的MC3R,也是下一句句首的“it”所指代的内容,因此该项承上启下,与上下文连接通顺。故选E项。
35.根据前文的“For those eager to be taller, we need to look at the Dutch, who stand head and shoulders above the rest of us as the tallest people in the world. But, of course tall people have to stoop through doorways and struggle to fit in cars and can have joint and cardiovascular problems. (对于那些渴望长高的人来说,我们需要看看荷兰人,他们是世界上最高的人,远远高于我们其他人。但是,当然,高个子必须弯腰通过门口,努力适应汽车,可能会有关节和心血管问题。)”可知, 这里提出了个子高给生活带来的不便以及可能会给身体带来的不良影响,C项(所以也许我们应该小心我们的愿望。)承接上文,与上文连接通顺。故选C项。

90.根据上文“Rural tourism, consist of fishing, hiking, horse riding and other outdoor activities. (乡村旅游,包括钓鱼、徒步旅行、骑马和其他户外活动。)”可知,本段与乡村旅游有关。A项“它在乡村建设中起着关键作用。”符合文意。故选A项。

91.根据上文“It’s regularly claimed that you’ll be more productive if you get up early. Very early. According to a 2016 Wall Street Journal article, the most successful and therefore productive people typically rise at 4 a. m.”(人们经常声称,如果你起得非常早的话,你的工作效率会更高。 和下文“For instance, if you’re awake while everyone else is still asleep, they won’t distract you, so you’ll be more productive.”(例如,如果你醒着的时候其他人都还在睡觉,他们不会分散你的注意力,所以你会更有效率。) 故选A。
92.根据上文“However, the science tells a very different story.”(然而,科学告诉我们一个非常不同的事情。)
93.根据下文“Less than that quickly has negative health effects, compromising mood, memory, stress tolerance, and more. Forcing yourself to wake at 4 a. m means you’re losing sleep, and will be less productive as a result.”(低于这个数字很快就会对健康产生负面影响,影响情绪、记忆力、压力承受能力等等。
94.根据下文“A study by the National Sleep Foundation stated that “Individuals who habitually sleep outside the normal range may be exhibiting symptoms of serious health problems or even may be compromising their health and well- being”.”(美国国家睡眠基金会的一项研究表明,“习惯性睡眠超出正常范围的人可能表现出严重健康问题的症状,甚至可能损害他们的健康和幸福。”。)
95.根据上文“Another study claims sleeping far fewer hours than average is more likely to be self-enforced than anything natural.”(另一项研究表明,睡眠时间远远少于平均水平比任何自然事物更有可能是自我强制的。)

根据空前“People will have more time to be together with their families. ”(人们将有更多的时间和家人在一起)可知,享受更长的周末,员工可以和家人在一起休息,再回到岗位能够更有活力。故E 项“After rest and relaxation, employees will become more energetic when they come back to work.”(经过休息和放松,当员工回到工作岗位时,他们会变得更有活力)符合语境。故选E。
    2. 根据空前“However, there are doubts as to whether this well-intentioned initiative can be put into practice.”(然而,有人怀疑这一善意的倡议是否能付诸实践)可知,人们对此项政策能够实施产生疑虑,担心无法受益。故D项“Most people think that they will actually not be able to enjoy the benefits of such a scheme.”(大多数人认为他们实际上无法享受到这样一个计划带来的好处)符合语境,呼应doubts。故选D。
    3. 根据空后“ If staff workers of government departments and public institutions no longer work on Friday afternoons, local residents will have nowhere to go if they have urgent issues to solve through these establishments.”(如果政府部门和事业单位的工作人员在周五下午不上班,当地居民如果有紧急问题需要通过这些机构解决,就无处可去了)可知,另外一个担心是政府机关周五下午放假导致紧急公共服务缺失。F项“Another worry is that this measure will finally be exclusively (专有地) enjoyed by a limited number of employees.”(另一个担忧是,这一措施最终将只适用于有限数量的员工)符合语境。故选F。
    4. 根据空前“Obviously, the only way out is to implement policies concerning paid annual leave in a realistic manner so that the working people can make arrangements for their days off work. As a result, holidaymakers don’t need to all rush to the same scenic spots during the same period of time, which would be beneficial to the protection and operation of these spots. ”(显然,唯一的出路是切实执行带薪年假政策,让劳动人民可以安排他们的休息日。这样一来,度假者就不需要在同一时间段都赶往同一景点,这将有利于这些景点的保护和运营)可知,建议改进以保障政策实施到位,由此推知,下面要进一步指出这样做的优点。A项“Also, this is an effective way to increase consumer spending.”(此外,这也是增加消费支出的有效方式) 符合语境。故选A。
    5. 根据空后“ The government is supposed to pay more attention to the protection of labor rights and employ all possible means to ensure their holidays as well as the functions of government institutions, instead of just making economically motivated policies.”(政府应该更加关注劳工权利的保护,采取一切可能的手段来确保他们的假期以及政府机构的功能,而不是仅仅制定经济驱动的政策)可知,总结使带薪年休实施到位的重要性。 G项“As long as paid annual leave remains unrealistic in most industrial sectors, the two-and-half-day weekend seems pointless.”(只要带薪年假在大多数工业部门仍然不现实,两天半的周末似乎就没有意义)符合语境。故选G。
