As a young boy, I sometimes traveled the country roads with my dad. He was a rural mail carrier, and on Saturdays he would ask me to go with him. Driving through the countryside was always an adventure: There were animals to see, people to visit, and chocolate cookies if you knew where to stop, and Dad did.
In the spring, Dad delivered boxes full of baby chickens, and when I was a boy it was such fun to stick your fingers through one of the holes of the boxes and let the baby birds peck on your fingers.
On Dad’s final day of work, it took him well into the evening to complete his rounds because at least one member from each family was waiting at their mailboxes to thank him for his friendship and his years of service. “Two hundred and nineteen mailboxes on my route,” he used to say, “and a story at every one.” A young girl wrote letters but had no stamps, so she left a few buttons on the envelope in the mailbox; Dad paid for the stamps. On cold days Dad might find one of his customers waiting for him with a cup of hot chocolate.
A dozen years ago, when I traveled back to my hometown on the sad occasion of Dad’s death, the mailboxes along the way reminded me of some of his stories. I thought I knew them all, but that wasn’t the case.
As I drove home, I noticed two lamp poles, one on each side of the street. When my dad was around, those poles supported wooden boxes about four feet off the ground. One box was painted green, and the other was red, and each had a long narrow hole at the top with white lettering: SANTA CLAUS, NORTH POLE. For years children had dropped letters to Santa through those holes.
While Mom and I were sitting at the kitchen table I heard footsteps. There, at the door, stood Frank Townsend, Dad’s postmaster and great friend for many years. So we all sat down at the table and began to tell stories.

We had just relocated to Germany and moved into a big and old country house with a mysterious abandoned wine cellars (地窖), which my husband warned me many times not to explore without him. After settling down, we began slowly releasing our large family of rescue cats and dogs into the woods behind our house so that they could get used to the area and venture out on their own. So, it wasn’t long before we gained a reputation for having lots of rescue animals with us in the neighborhood.
One day, the doorbell rang and I was sure some of my Christmas packages had arrived. I ran to the door and swung it open, but no one was there. I sensed something and looked down, only to find a beautiful calico (有斑点的) kitten sitting there, looking up at me with big, intelligent eyes. There was no way that she could have rung the doorbell by herself, was there? Were my new neighbors playing tricks on me? Perhaps, someone had found the kitten somewhere and left her there, and then rang the doorbell and ran away. They accurately guessed we would welcome an additional family member and take care of her.
My husband called her our little angel, so we named her Angelica accordingly. It seemed as if she was always meant to be in this big family and she turned out to be a perfect companion. Always by my side, she was more like a puppy than a kitten. Wise beyond her years, she enjoyed exploring through the mysterious house as much as I did, but with much less fear. Angelica was courageous.
So, I decided to be brave, too. I had promised my husband that I wouldn’t explore dangerous areas unless he or someone else was around, but he was away on a business trip for a week and I figured that Angelica would count as my companion. I was ready to explore the cellar, and so was she.
The only way in was through a hatch (盖子) that was partially hidden by the grass that covered it, then down a shaky ladder to its dark depths, probably twelve feet deep. I equipped myself with a good flashlight and warm clothes. Angelica sat on the edge and watched me carefully start down the ladder. Suddenly, there was a crash at the foot.

The Poster Contest
Shawn had been working on his entry for the school’s poster contest for weeks. The topic of the contest was recycling, and the winner would receive the honor of having his or her poster displayed all around the school. This was a big event and he couldn’t afford to miss it. And Shawn was sure his was the best in the class-certainly better than Neil’s!
Neil and Shawn were in the same class and the two boys competed in everything, and their test scores and grades were just about equal. They almost never spoke to each other, but everyone in the class knew they were competitors. One thing Shawn excelled at, though, was art.
His poster, which showed a garbage pile threatening to crush the school, looked really good. The only problem was the slogan, which was a little boring. It read, “Recycle.”
Mr. Wu evaluated all the posters carefully and said, “These are all excellent, but there are two entries that really stand out.” Shawn grinned as Mr. Wu held up his poster and the class clapped. But then Mr. Wu held up Neil’s poster, too. The artwork wasn’t great, Shawn saw, but the words written across the top were powerful. They read, “It’s Your Planet-Recycle It!” Even Shawn had to admit it was a good slogan.
Mr. Wu announced that the winner should be decided by a public vote. But their competition ended in a tie(平局). It was really a hard decision, for they both did a good job in the designing, each with their own unique strong points.
Shawn walked out of the school, with his head and shoulders hanging down. He knew the chance that his poster would be exhibited was dimming. When he looked up, he saw Neil walking alone a few steps ahead, his face stiffening with worry. He cast Shawn a look, but didn’t say a single word.

4.阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写使之构成一个完整的故事。
On a Friday evening in December, two weeks before Christmas, I lost my job. I hadn’t seen it coming. I was excited for the weekend, when my daughter, Kristil, then 12, and I planned to get our Christmas tree. Then I listened to my voicemail “We’re sorry, but your work assignment has ended.” My heart sank.
I wasn’t just a single parent; I was the only parent. I did everything I could to give Kristil a good life, but there were some things my love couldn’t fix. The next day as we searched for our tree, I struggled to be cheerful as I eyed the Christmas tree prices. Empty-handed, we returned home.
Over the next week, I furiously applied for jobs as my bank account grew smaller. All applications ended in vain. I felt as if the world was closing in on me. On a weekend afternoon, I dropped Kristil in a wealthy gated community for a birthday party of her classmate. I watched as she went in, surrounded by all the nice things we couldn’t afford. I drove home defeated.
Back at home, I glanced out the window. It had been snowing on and off all morning. I noticed a small woman with short white hair struggling to open her car door against the wind. She got out. I realized it was my old professor, Esther Heffernan. I hadn’t seen her since we’d met for lunch three months ago. I’d first met Esther 10 years earlier, when I was her student at Edgewood College in Madison, Wisconsin. Kristil was 3 at the time, and I sometimes took her to class. Esther was understanding and would bring coloring books to occupy Kristil. After I graduated, she kept in touch, meeting me for lunch every few months. I had grown to love her like family.

Ben raced out of school. Christmas holidays! When he got home, he went to check on his pony, Scout. He slipped him a candy, and Scout nuzzled(用口鼻轻擦)his shoulder. Ben started toward the house and found his older brother Jack starting the snowmobile(雪地机动车)to deliver gas to Uncle Mike. Ben jumped on the back and joined him.
They set of slowly. The snow was fresh and deep on the remote mountain path. When they arrived, Jack went over with the gas can. Ben looked up the mountain and saw something moving. He got binoculars(望远镜)and saw two animals. Could it be a horse? Jack climbed back on the snowmobile and asked Ben to leave. When Ben told Jack he saw horses up in the snowy trees, Jack didn't believe it. Ben looked back up the mountain, but he couldn't see anything.
At dinner Ben told his father he saw two horses up on the mountain today. “If they are horses, they must be trapped by all this snow." said his dad. "If they're trapped, we have to do something," said Ben, his voice rising.
His dad looked at Jack. "Well, in the morning go and take a look. Take the gun and some hay(干草). If they look as if they can survive, give them the hay. If not…"Jack looked serious, and slowly nodded. Ben knew what the gun was for, and his chest went cold.
In the morning, they set off in the cold snow. When they got to the place where Ben had seen the horses, they stopped and looked up using binoculars. No horses. They waited for a few minutes.
"I see them. They' re horses. Let's take the snowmobile up there. "Ben suddenly exclaimed. They drove the snowmobile in the deep snow and finally reached the place. "Oh no!" said Ben "They're starving!" One of the horses had lost a lot of hair, and their tails were almost gone. Their eyes were lifeless and tired.
Paragraph 1: Jack walked around the horses.

6.阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。
My wife, Megan, and I went out to dinner with an old friend who we had not seen in a while. There had been some talk of COVID-19 on the news, but it was early in the outbreak and people were still going about their daily routines. Even though everyone in our group felt perfectly fine, we took precautions(预防): We washed our hands with soap, did not share food and had no significantly close contact.
A few days later, our friend called and told us that she had been test positive(阳性) for the coronavirus. She had felt some mild symptoms(症状)for a day or so after that dinner and was able to be tested because she is a doctor. On the following day, I started to feel a little tired. I decided to stay on the master bedroom away from the rest of my family. The next morning, I woke up with a 39-degree fever. That was when we realized that I might have caught the virus from our friend.
At once, Megan called our state’s coronavirus(冠状病毒) hotline, who then called in our primary care doctor and the head of our local hospital system’s coronavirus team. We explained that we had been in contact with someone who has been test positive, and I was having symptoms. They quickly permitted me to receive a test at an urgent care center located five minutes’ drive from my house. The result made my heart sink—I was also tested positive, and the local hospital wasn’t equipped with the facilities to treat my disease. As a mild case, I was recommended to stay at home and quarantine(隔离) myself.
Following the doctor’s advice, Megan and I quarantined ourselves and our children. I started isolation(隔开) in the bedroom, and the only interaction I had with Megan was when she brought in food. Megan slept on a small couch in our home office away from the kids’ rooms. She also minimized her contact with our kids in case she was carrying the virus.

My husband and I enjoy seeing life through the eyes of our children. It’s amazing to watch as they discover their world.
While we were outdoors last summer enjoying the sunshine, our oldest daughter, Kaytlin, called me to the doorway. Beneath the steps was a baby red squirrel.
We watched it from a distance, not wanting to disturb it or scare off its mother. But after a long wait—and looking all around our house for signs of a nest or a mother—we realized the tiny squirrel was lost.
Shaking terribly, he was weak, thin, and hungry. We tried to find an expert to help, but the Inland Fisheries and Wildlife website showed that there were no wildlife experts in our area. After some quick research, we concluded that the best way to give the squirrel a fighting chance was to care for him ourselves. So a trip to the local store for milk and supplies was in order. More research taught us how much to feed him, how to estimate his age, how and when to wean (断奶) him, and that we should let him go as soon as he could survive on his own.
Our daughters and I took turns in feeding “Squirt.” Kaytlin took on the most responsibility. She taught him to eat from a bottle, and she woke in the night for his feeds.
To our relief, Squirt soon became healthy and strong. Within a few weeks he became more active. He would chatter (吱吱叫) for his next meal, playfully go around the girls, and lie down on them for sleep. It wasn’t long before he was weaned onto solid food and reintroduced to the wild.
His first few visits to the great outdoors were funny. Just like a child, he would play in the grass some and then run back to Kaytlin for safety. Soon she had him climbing trees and finding nest material.

8.阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
As I was driving to the airport last week the odometer(里程表) on my truck rotated to 100,000 kilometers. This led me to pause and think about selling the truck and buying a new one, but it also made me think about all the life I’d lived in this truck, and how my bulldog had accompanied me in it, leaving me hesitating about selling it.
When I returned to Canada after nine years overseas, what better way could I fit in with and immerse in rural culture than by buying a pickup?
The day I rolled out of the dealer(经销商) and hit the first gravel road(碎石马路) in my Toyota Tacoma was exciting, until I got very nervous as rocks hit my new purchase. But all that quickly evaporated when I received my first call through the truck’s Bluetooth phone. It was the doctor, to say that my Dad was hospitalized in a remote location. I immediately followed the truck’s GPS and got there quickly and safely. I was with Dad for his last two days. And so the first memories of my truck are images carved in my heart.
As the kilometers of my life rolled on, Lyon, my bulldog who came back to Canada with me from France, claimed the back seat as an area belonging only to her. It didn’t matter how short or long the trip was, she stared at me in the review mirror all the time. Most often, I would arrive at our destination and Lyon would stay in the back seat, bathed in the sun with the door open, knowing I would return. There was an overwhelming sense of comfort between us in that truck.
In the early days of truck ownership, I panicked at how dirty it became and any dent(凹痕) it put on. I soon realized, though, that it was part of the truck’s character. Now I look at every dent and recall the story or adventure that put them there. I began to see it as character-building, much like wrinkles appearing on my face. The truck was simply aging gracefully and began, like humans, to display its experience and wisdom.
Paragraph 1:
I don’t think a vehicle is just for travelling from place to place.

April Fools’ Day
Nat woke early and jumped out of bed. Today was the best day of the year for him. Nat loved to play tricks, and today was April Fools’ Day.
Some of Nat’s tricks were big hits. Last year, he short-sheeted his sister’s bed. She couldn’t understand what was going on and started to think that her legs must have grown much longer during the day. When she realized what had happened, she laughed her head off.
Some of Nat’s tricks were not so successful. Mom didn’t think finding a furry toy mouse in the fridge was humorous at all. After she calmed down a bit, she said, “That’s it! There’s a ban on Nat tricks for two weeks.”
Nat was also the class clown. He was always making jokes in class. He liked it when he made the other kids laugh. Since it was April Fools’ Day, he felt like he had to come up with something really good to provide his classmates with some really good entertainment.
For that, Nat thought long and hard before he came up with his brilliant idea. He bought two toy frogs which were made out of green plastic and looked very realistic. Nat knew just the trick he would play on his classmates.
Nat arrived at school early. To succeed in his plan, he needed to get into the classroom before anyone else. Nat’s class had a rainforest terrarium (饲养皿). It had plants, insects, and three frogs in it. Nat’s idea was to pretend that the frogs had escaped. He knew that Ms. Lopez, his teacher, wasn’t afraid of frogs but several of his classmates, including himself, were.
Nat slipped into the classroom. Good! There was nobody here. He put one of the toy frogs on the floor, near the terrarium and the other on his friend Stacey’s desk. Nat knew that Stacey really didn’t not like frogs. Also, she played a great trick on him last April Fools’ Day. To make his trick more convincing, Nat pushed the lid of the terrarium open. Then he rushed off to morning gathering.

Kindness of Strangers
We depend upon a community where helping others is highly thought of. This helps form a web that holds us together in times of need.
Years ago, I was in the kitchen getting dinner ready when my fourteen-year-old daughter, Cassandra, called me from her room. “Mom, can you help me get downstairs?” She had lung disease and depended on oxygen twenty-four hours a day, so it was impossible for her to move up and down the stairs without help. I turned down the stove and ran upstairs to her room. Cassandra let out a sigh and closed her eyes. “Mom, I wish it wasn’t so hard for me to climb the stairs.”
“I know, honey. We’ll try to work something out.”
A month earlier, a company introduced an electric stairlift (座椅电梯) to us. It sounded wonderful. It would greatly improve my daughter’s life. Unluckily, we couldn’t afford it along with the medical bills although John, my husband, even took two jobs to support the family.
I asked the local organization for help once again. They had lent us a wheelchair and a shower chair; maybe they could help with a stairlift, too. I held my breath while the phone rang. “Do you have a stairlift I could borrow?” But they hadn’t.
A few weeks later, we bought a shower chair. Then we could return the borrowed one. I loaded it into my car and drove to the organization. As I got close to the gate of its building, I saw something looking like metal rails, and one of them had a chair attached.
I thought I was seeing things. I parked my car and got out to confirm it was real. I touched the cool metal of the rails and the soft cushion of the attached seat. There was even a remote control taped to a rail. It was a stairlift! I ran in to ask about it. A volunteer told me that someone left it here during the night. He added that a note was left on the stairlift, saying “For anyone who may need it.”

1.Paragraph 1: Frank asked my mother, “What are we going to do about the letters this Christmas?” “The letters? Whose letters?” I interrupted with a confused look on my face. “I guess you never knew.” said Frank, tears welling up in his red eyes. Mom put her warm hands on mine and asked me if I still remembered each year before Christmas, kids like me used to put our letters to Santa in those green and red boxes on Main Street. It was my dad who answered all those letters every year.(75words)
Paragraph 2: I remembered Dad was busy delivering piles of letters before Christmas each year. He used to tell me it was his harvest season of the year. It wasn’t hard for me to imagine Dad sitting at the old oak table in our basement reading those letters and answering each one. I have since spoken with several of the people who received Christmas letters during their childhood, and they told me how amazed they were that Santa had known so much about their homes and families. From then on, I decided to deal with the letters as my father did. (86words)

4.I rushed out of the house, waving my hands. “What are you doing out in this weather?” I asked as we hugged. Sister Esther said she called my office and knew I wasn’t working there anymore, so she came to see me. I gave her a warm welcome and led her into my room. Upon arriving, she told me urgently, “Hearing the news that you were fired from the work, I felt greatly worried. I know you are raising a big family and bearing a large life financial pressure. So I come here and give the gifts for you and Kristil.” She said as she kissed me on the cheek. While saying, she handed me a big package and a Christmas card.
When I opened the envelope, inside I found some money and a note. Into the package placed a doll and a large envelope. I tore the envelope carefully and hundred-dollar bills poured onto the floor. 5.Paragraph 1: Jack walked around the horses.Jack sighed and picked up the gun, pointing to the poor dying horse. One horse turned and looked at him and made a soft little noise. “We should try,” pleaded Ben. He walked around the horses again, patting on the neck of the big brown one, which made a sad, small groaning sound. Ben quickly got the hay off the back of the snowmobile and spread it around in piles. The horses ate hungrily, and Ben poured water into a pail for them. With one more pat to each horse, Jack and Ben climbed on the snowmobile and drove back down the mountain as quickly as they could to report their news.
Paragraph 2: The two brothers went from door to door asking everyone to come and help. They went from the hardware store to the gas station, where they put notices up asking for help. Then they took the snowmobile back up the mountain with more hay and water and some warm blankets. The horses seemed happy to see them. They worked for hours but only made a small dent in the snow. “This is hopeless,” said Jack. He leaned on his shovel and wiped his dripping nose. “Let’s go home. No one is going to help.” “We can’t give up,” said Ben. But his fingers were frozen, and his nose felt numb. Suddenly, a group of snowmobilers arrived with shovels and hot chocolate. They had followed Ben and Jack’s tracks up the trail. They tried everything they could to help the horse to stand up. With the effort of everyone around, the horses finally struggled to their feet. Unity is strength.

6.With all the severe symptoms, I suffered a lot. We decided to call everyone we had contacted over the course of the past week. Megan insisted we should let them know that I had tested positive. Hard as it was to inform people that we might have given them the coronavirus, it was the responsible thing to do. To our pleasant surprise, all of our friends showed their understanding and support upon hearing the news. To cheer us up, one of my wife’s best friends even baked a cake with the letters “Stay Strong” on it and delivered it to our front door.
One week later, things were changing for the better. I made sure to get plenty of rest and did some exercise to stay as healthy as I could. I also managed to ease the worries of Megan and our kids during our quarantine by spending more time doing online video-chats with them. My fever started to fade and I could feel my head clearing. The next test showed a cheering result. It came back negative. Had it not been for the love and care from those around me, I wouldn’t have made it.

7. One day in the trees, Squirt met up with a family of gray squirrels. But the family was none too happy about his visit. They scolded and swatted at him. At first Squirt was so unhappy that he avoided them. And then he quickly learned some social skills. He would take some snacks to meet them. For several days he played all day in the trees surrounding our house but came down at bedtime.
One night, Squirt didn’t come back to our house and it rained hard. Our girls fretted. They wanted to seek Squirt. We prevented them because it was too dangerous. But when the sun rose the next day, there was Squirt, begging for food. And that remained the pattern for weeks. The experience was entertaining and heartwarming for our family. In the wild and somewhat silly moments of raising an orphaned baby squirrel, our children learned to value and appreciate life.

A couple of other kids leapt out of their seats and shrieked while the rest were laughing and banging their desks. Nat was feeling very pleased with himself. His trick was definitely a success. But he knew he had to hide his glee. He pretended that he was working and reached out for a piece of paper. It was then that something cold and wet slithered past his fingers. It was a frog-a real one!
Nat realized that he had opened the terrarium. Suddenly, there came a loud croak from under his chair. Nat almost jumped out of his skin with fright. Now he became the laughingstock of the class. What scared him even more was the only person who remained serious-Ms. Lopez. She calmly walked down the aisle, scooped up the frog and put it back into the terrarium. Then she came to Nat’s side, seemingly waiting for his confession. Nat felt his face burning and apologized to Ms Lopez. He also promised to be considerate from then on.

10.“Can I take it away today?” I asked hopefully. “Of course, I mean if you really need it.” the volunteer replied. “Yes, yes. You know my daughter’s condition doesn’t allow her to move up and down stairs freely, which causes us great trouble. We really need this.” I said eagerly. After filling in an application and going through some other simple procedures, the stairlift was loaded in my car and waiting to go home. I was so excited that almost forgot to ask about who the donator was. The volunteer said, “Strangers.”, smiling.
After John fixed the stairlift on our stairs, we shouted at Cassandra to try it out! With a big smile on her face, Cassandra sat on the chair and switched it on. Slowly but steadily, the stairlift slid down, landing on the first floor safe and sound. Cassandra was more than happy, so did John and I. “Thanks mom and dad.” “It is the strangers who we are supposed to give our gratitude to, my dear.” I knelt down to hold her hands, “I don’t know who send this gift to us, but I’m sure they are really kind strangers”. “Yes, mon. I will never forget!”.

7.阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

(86words)

No one is going to help.” “We can’t give up,” said Ben. But his fingers were frozen, and his nose felt numb. Suddenly, a group of snowmobilers arrived with shovels and hot chocolate.

For several days he played all day in the trees surrounding our house but came down at bedtime.
