Some libraries use unique architecture to encourage visitors to settle down with a new book, or use mobile libraries to bring books to hard-to-reach populations. No matter how they achieve it, these novel libraries are keeping the magic of reading alive.
Beach Library (Albena, Bulgaria)
Reading a book on the beach is a classic, and in Bulgaria, one library encourages tourists to do just that. The white, weather-resistant shelves, lined up not far from the surf, hold 6,000 books in 15 languages so every visitor can find the perfect beach read to enjoy while soaking up the sun’s rays.
The Camel Library Service (North Eastern Province, Kenya)
To combat (防止,减轻) low literacy rates in the desert of Kenya, the government created a mobile library composed of nine camels bringing books to villages. The library travels four days a week serving the region’s people. Currently the service focuses on children, but with more funding they plan to increase their reach both in distance and the titles they carry.
Bishan Library (Singapore)
Built in 2006, this library is meant to invoke (在脑海中唤起) a modern glass treehouse. Glass pods (吊舱) of varying colors stick out of the building randomly to create comfortable yet airy corners for reading throughout the building. At the same time, a more open-plan children’s room on the basement level invites interaction while preventing noise from going up and disturbing those concentrating in the high places above.
Seikei University Library (Tokyo, Japan)
Libraries are usually known for their quiet atmosphere, but this one encourages conversation. Pritzker Prize-winner Shigeru Ban designed the library with space-age, free- standing soundproofed pods to respect those who need uninterrupted study, while also being conducive (有助于) to other methods of learning.
Macquarie University Library (Sydney, Australia)
A surprising combination of the cutting edge and sustainability, this building was made from recycled materials, features a green roof, and was designed to imitate the look of a eucalyptus tree (桉树). It is also state of the art, using robot cranes to bring requested books to the front desk.
36. In the Beach Library, visitors can .

My almost 6-year-old son is currently crazy about Star Wars and Harry Potter. I know he’s young, but the movies and books bring up topics for us to sort through all the time — tough topics. A good chance for me! We read the books together; we watch the movies together. We’ve talked about many things that some parents of a 5-year-old might not talk about, but I want to have these conversations with my son.
Today, it was rainy and when the baby took her nap, I allowed him to watch a Star Wars movie as a reward for being so kind this morning to his sister who was feeling a little unhappy. As I was folding laundry, I said to him, very casually, “Wow, that Darth Vader really makes me sick.” My son chided (指责) me, “Mama, Darth Vader has good in him. I know he’s on the dark side, but he isn’t all bad.” This launched us into a conversation about good versus evil and how goodness can be found in anyone if we only look hard enough.
For the past week, I feel like I have been tested with various examples of people simply not being nice. And some people were rude for no apparent reason. A nurse was impatient with me on the phone when I called for a prescription. Little ears were listening in on all of those instances and after doing my best to be nice on the phone call with the nurse, I hung up and said to my husband, “Wow, what was wrong with her? She was so rude.” My boy said, “Mama, we all have a bad day. Be nice to her and she might be nice to you back.” This child teaches me lessons every day, and all we can do is treat people with kindness, as hard as it might be.
The nurse was probably exhausted from taking sick calls and maybe she simply needed a coffee break. I do know that those people were not on their best behavior or showing their best side but how many of us have been in those exact shoes? We all act in haste. We all speak in haste. We all do things we regret. And, if we were lucky, we were met with kindness instead of anger in return for our outburst.
My son reminded me today to be kinder and gentler to the people I meet with. I’m going to try harder this week. I’m going to try to smile when met with a frown. Like he mentions, even Darth Vader has good in him and maybe he just needs a little sympathy.
41. How does the writer react to her son’s recent interest?
A. Using it as a chance to express her regret.
B.Trying to persuade him to change his mind.
C.Trying to help him develop some more hobbies.
D.Using it as a chance to have a deep talk with him.
42. Why did the author allow her son to watch a movie Star Wars?
A.Because it was a reward for his kindness.
B.Because her son loves Star Wars.
C.Because it was raining outside.
D.Because the baby was napping.
43. What did the author learn from her child?
A.How to be rude to people.
B.How to complain about others.
C.The importance of being kind to others.
D.The essential of asking for medical advice.
44. Which of the following words can be used to describe the author’s son?
A.Optimistic and calm.
B.Brave and enthusiastic.
C.Courageous and generous.
D.Considerate and sympathetic.
45. In the passage, the author intends to encourage people to .
A.smile to those friendly to them
B.sympathize with those in trouble
C.find the good in others and treat them kindly
D.reward others’ kindness and help more people

Every year millions of breeding monarch butterflies in the US and southern Canada search for milkweed plants on which to lay their eggs. Concern over decreasing habitat has urged conservationists to create monarch-friendly spaces along roadsides, which are more than enough — within the butterflies’ range and usually publicly owned. But traffic noise stresses monarch caterpillars out, a new study finds. They eventually do become desensitized (使不再敏感) to it — but that might cause trouble to them later on, too.
Noise pollution is known to affect the lives of birds, whales and other creatures. But until recently, scientists have never tested whether it leads to a stress response in insects. When Andy Davis, a conservation physiologist at the University of Georgia, noticed online videos of roadside monarch caterpillars apparently moving with short quick movements from side to side or up and down as cars came by, he wondered how the constant noise might affect them. Davis built a special caterpillar heart monitor, fitting a small sensor into microscope to precisely measure monarch caterpillars’ heart rates as they listened to recordings of traffic sounds in the laboratory.
The hearts of caterpillars exposed to highway noise for two hours beat 17 percent faster than those of caterpillars in a silent room. But the heart rates of the noise — exposed group returned to baseline levels after hearing the traffic sounds nonstop for their entire 12-day development period, Davis and his colleagues reported in May in Biology Letters. “This desensitization could be problematic when the caterpillars become adults,” says Davis. A rapid stress response is vital for monarch butterflies on their two-month journey to spend winters in Mexico, as they narrowly escape predators and fight wind currents.
Whether a noisy developmental period reduces monarchs’ survival rates remains unknown, notes Ryan Norris, an ecologist at the University of Guelph in Ontario, who was not involved in the study. But in any case, he believes roadside habitats almost certainly drive up the butterflies’ death rates as a result of crashes with cars. “There are so many potential road habitats for monarchs and other insects — it would be such a nice thing to take advantage of,” Norris says. “But you just can’t get around the traffic. I think roads and monarchs just don’t mix.”
46. Why did conservationists create monarch-friendly spaces along roadsides?
A.Because they concerned over decreasing monarch habitat.
B.Because it was vital for the monarch to grow quickly.
C.Because they were urged to make an experiment.
D.Because it was good for the monarch to migrate.
47. What inspired Andy Davis to explore the effect of noise on monarch caterpillars?
A.There had been little research on monarch caterpillars.
B.Videos showed cars crashed into monarch caterpillars.
C.There was no such record of monarch caterpillars’ heart rates.
D.He found that monarch caterpillars shook with cars moving by.
48. According to Andy Davis, what might happen to monarch butterflies when exposed to traffic noise?
A.They are likely to need more time to develop.
B.They are likely to lose their way on their journey.
C.They are more likely to die before they become adults.
D.They are more likely to be killed and eaten in their migration.
49. Which of the following statements is Ryan Norris most likely to agree with?
A.Monarchs’ survival rates are decreasing each year.
B.People should avoid building roadside habitats for insects.
C.More capital is needed to study monarchs’ developmental periods.
D.Butterflies’ rising death rates have nothing to do with moving cars.
50. Which is the most suitable title for the passage?
A.The Relationships Between Monarch Butterflies and Highway
B.The Effects of Highway Noise on Monarch Butterflies
C.The Changes of Monarch Butterflies Along Highway
D.The Benefits of Protecting Monarch Butterflies

What is your calling? What is your purpose in life? What did you come to this world to do? Every day we read about how we should find our purpose and pursue it throughout our lives in order to find meaning and contentment. There are even scientific studies that show people who view their work as a calling rather than just a career or a job have a higher life and work satisfaction. So, what exactly is this calling?
I’ve personally struggled with this concept for many years. I knew that happiness not only came from a present state of joy, but also from the pursuit of an objective that gave me something to pursue. That is, until I found myself feeling empty despite my achievement of those goals.
And as I reflected on these feelings of emptiness and boredom that had arisen despite my successes, I realized something. Meaning and satisfaction come from a personal devotion to what we do and the intrinsic (固有的) fulfillment we get from it. It has nothing to do with financial gain, social advancement or any other type of external reward or motivation. It is about doing something that we love. It is about focusing our efforts and spending our time on passions that light the spark inside of us and allow us to share with the world the unique gifts we possess.
I had never before stopped to think about what I found intrinsically rewarding or fulfilling. Financial gain and external recognition were pretty much the only drivers I knew. More so, I thought this calling meant having one passion we were born with to pursue relentlessly (不懈地).
So, I spent some years trying to find this long-lost purpose of mine. I discovered during that time passions I had no idea I even had. Yet, I wasn’t sure how to make them into my life purpose. I searched for an answer but couldn’t find it. It wasn’t until I came to understand the truths about our purpose in life that I was able to find my place in this world.
Our purpose can consist of various things that make us feel alive. As we grow and evolve throughout the different stages in our lives, we may discover new passions and desires that change our sense of purpose and calling.
We all have a longing for lives that give meaning to our existence. The difference lies in how we go about accomplishing this. We must each find our own “shine” and then shine on. 51.According to the passage, the calling refers to .
A.one’s view about careers
B.a task one has to carry out
C.a life-long career one chooses
D.a strong desire or sense of duty to do a job
52. Which of the following belongs to the author’s previous drivers for finding fulfillment?
A.Financial gain and external recognition.
B.Pursuing passions relentlessly.
C.Discovering new passions.
D.Finding purpose in life.
53. What is the real purpose in life according to the author?
A.Trying to do everything that you can.
B.Trying to achieve your ambitious goals.
C.Doing meaningful things with your passion.
D.Doing something that can be successful easily.
54. According to the 5th paragraph, we know that .
A.the author spent some years making changes
B.the author used to think he had no passion at all
C.the author didn’t know how to search for the life purpose
D.the author has known his passions since he started to work
55. What conclusion can be drawn from the passage?
A.It’s wise to give up discovering our one true passion.
B.It’s useless to pursue financial gain and external recognition.
C.It’s necessary to find our own calling and pursue it with vigor.
D.It’s important to share our passion with the world without stopping.

Monday started as an ordinary day for Shannon St. Onge, who lived in Pense, a town in Saskatchewan, Canada. She drove the approximately 25 kilometres east into Regina for work.
She kept an eye on highway conditions throughout the day. The weather network was warning of a blizzard. Expected start time was at around 7 pm, but she thought she could make it. “I bought a takeout for the kids, filled my gas tank, replaced my broken phone charger and then headed home around 5:30 before the storm hit,” she wrote in a Facebook post.
She took a dirt road because she thought it would be better for the winter driving conditions. Just as the pavement turned into gravel (碎石路), the wind picked up and visibility started to diminish (降低). She drove at a snail’s pace with her window rolled down, using the edge as her guide. After a while she realized she was lost. Whiteout conditions left her confused.
She could make out a sign that said “Bouvier Lane,” giving her some sense of where she was. Then she posted her location on the Pense community Facebook page in hopes that someone might be able to find her. That was when 80-year-old Andre Bouvier Sr. figured out her location. Despite his wife’s concern for his well-being, he decided to help her and headed out in the storm.
He bundled up (使穿得暖和), grabbed an LED flashlight and walked about half a kilometre into the raging storm to search for St. Onge’s car. To Bouvier’s surprise, he found two other cars with people who also needed help trapped alongside St. Onge. He led the seven lost people back to his home and welcomed them in for the evening.
Bouvier became a hero overnight. Bouvier didn’t want much credit for his efforts for a stranger in need. “Everybody would have done the same thing,” he said. “You don’t think about it; you just do it.”
