Dear Chris,
Good news for you! Traditional Chinese Culture Exhibition is due to be held in the City Museum from 11 December to 25 December. A wide range of Chinese art forms will be presented, varying from embroidery to calligraphy. Since you’re intrigued by the Chinese paper cutting recently, I sincerely invite you to the exhibition.
As you know, paper cutting is the perfect combination of designing, paining and skills. With the diverse colors and the varied shapes, it enjoys both practical value and appreciation value. In the exhibition, some famous artists and even experts will cut the paper on the spot, and with their help and guidance, you can give it a try in person to make images out of paper. Apart from that, we can also make some friends with the same interest who may help us have a deeper insight into the traditional Chinese culture.
I’m sure it’ll be an unforgettable and rewarding experience. Looking forward to your reply.
Yours,
Li Jin

Julie, an Australian housewife in Brisbane is one such example. Even though autumn is approaching Australia's Brisbane in April, one can still watch colorful blooming (盛开的) flowers in Julie's little garden, as she tells that in her community,“Each of us has a beautiful yard. The whole community, from children to elderly people, takes care of the environment as if they are taking care of their own garden.”
“Gardening is the most popular club in our community,” she says. “A lot of retired people don't just regularly organize gardening lectures, but also personally visit families in the community to provide gardening training. So you can see that flowers continue to blossom(开花) in our gardens throughout the year.”
Talking about her people's sense of caring for the environment, Julie says when people in the community take along their dog, they always carry a garbage bag to deal with the dog's waste. “In our community, you will never experience the embarrassment of stepping on the dirty waste while you are walking on the grass,” says Julie with a smile. “Taking care of the dog's waste can also help to develop children's sense of responsibility!”
As to protecting water resources, the Australian government has made strict rules for families. Julie says, “We certainly would not use tap water to water the flowers!” She says almost every family in her community has a huge tank used to store rainwater, which is later used as the resource of all outdoor water use, including car washing and watering the garden. This year, they also asked people to connect the water tank with their toilets.

Napoleon, as a character in Tolstoy’s War and Peace, is more than once described as having “fat little hands.’’ Nor does he “sit well or firmly on the horse.’’ He is said to be “undersized.’’ With “short legs’’ and a “round stomach”. The issue here is not the accuracy of Tolstoy’s description--it seems not that far off from historical accounts but his choice of facts:other things that could be said of the man are not said. We are meant to understand the difference of a warring commander in the body of a fat little Frenchman. Tolstoy’s Napoleon could be any man wandering in the streets and putting a little of powdered tobacco up his nose—and that is the point.
It is a way the novelist uses to show the moral nature of a character. And it turns out that, as Tolstoy has it, Napoleon is a crazy man. In a scene in Book Three of War and Peace, the wars having reached the critical year of 1812,Napoleon receives a representative from the Tsar(沙皇), who has come with peace terms. Napoleon is very angry: doesn’t he have more army? He, not the Tsar, is the one to make the terms. He will destroy all of Europe if his army is stopped. “That is what you will have gained by engaging me in the war!” he shouts. And then, Tolstoy writes, Napoleon “walked silently several times up and down the room, his fat shoulders moving quickly.’’
Still later, after reviewing his army amid cheering crowds, Napoleon invites the shaken Russian to dinner. “He raised his hand to the Russian’s…face,” Tolstoy writes, and “taking him by the ear pulled it gently….” To have one’s ear pulled by the Emperor was considered the greatest honor and mark of favor at the French court. “Well, well, why don’t you say anything?’’ said he, as if it was ridiculous in his presence to respect any one but himself, Napoleon.
Tolstoy did his research, but the composition is his own.

根据第一段“The issue here is not the accuracy of Tolstoy’s description--it seems not that far off from historical accounts but his choice of facts:可知,这里的问题不在于托尔斯泰描述的准确性——它似乎与历史记载相距不远,而在于他对事实的选择。托尔斯泰在《战争与和平》中对拿破仑的描写。基于他对事实的选择。故选C。
47. D。细节理解题。根据第二段“He will destroy all of Europe if his army is stopped.”
根据第二段“And it turns out that, as Tolstoy has it, Napoleon is a crazy man. Napoleon receives a representative from the Tsar(沙皇), who has come with peace terms. Napoleon is very angry:doesn’t he have more army? He, not the Tsar, is the one to make the terms. He will destroy all of Europe if his army is stopped. “That is what you will have gained by engaging me in the war!” he shouts.”
50. A。 根据最后一段“Tolstoy did his research, but the composition is his own.” 故选A。
D
How often one hears children wishing they were grown up, and old people wishing they were young again. Each age has its pleasures and its pains, and the happiest person is the one who enjoys what each age gives him without wasting his time in useless regrets.
Childhood is a time when there are few responsibilities to make life difficult. If a child has good parents, he is fed, looked after and loved, whatever he may do. It is impossible that he will ever again in his life be given so much without having to do anything in return. In addition, life is always presenting new things to the child — things that have lost their interest for older people because they are too well-known. But a child has his parents, he is not so free to do what he wishes to do; he is continually being told not to do things or being punished for what he has done wrong.
When the young man starts to earn his own living, he can no longer expect others to pay for his food, his clothes, and his room, but has to work if he wants to live comfortably. If he spends most of his time playing about in the way that he used to as a child, he will go hungry. And if he breaks the laws of society as he used to break the laws of his parents, he may go to prison. If, however, he works hard, keeps out of trouble and has good health, he can have the great happiness of building up for himself his own position in society.
51. According to the second paragraph, the writer thinks that _______.
A. only children are interested in life
B. life for a child is comparatively easy
C. a child is always loved whatever he does
D. if much is given to a child, he must do something in return
52. After a child grows up, he ________.
A. will have little time playing
B. has to be successful in finding a job
C. can still ask for help in time of trouble
D. should be able to take care of himself
53. Which of the following statements is NOT true according to the passage?
A. People are often satisfied with their life.
B. Life is less interesting for old people.
C. Adults are freer to do what they want to do.
D. Adults should no longer rely on others.
54. The main idea of the passage is _________.
A. life is not enjoyable since each age has some pains
B. young men can have the greatest happiness if they work hard
C. childhood is the more enjoyable time in one’s life
D. one is the happiest if he can make good use of each age in his life
55. The paragraph following this passage will most probably discuss _________.
A. examples of successful young men
B. how to build up one’s position in society
C. pleasures and pains of old people
D. what to do when one has problems in life
B52. D53. A54. D55. C
根据第二段的“Childhood is a time when there are few responsibilities to make life difficult. If a child has good parents, he is fed, looked after and loved, whatever he may do. It is impossible that he will ever again in his life be given so much without having to do anything in return.(童年是一个几乎没有责任让生活变得困难的时期。如果一个孩子有好的父母,无论他做什么,他都会得到喂养、照顾和关爱。他不可能在一生中再次得到如此多的东西而不做任何回报)”推知,作者认为孩子的生活相对容易。故选B。
52. D。细节理解题。根据第三段的“When the young man starts to earn his own living, he can no longer expect others to pay for his food, his clothes, and his room, but has to work if he wants to live comfortably. (当一个年轻人开始自己谋生时,他就不能再指望别人为他支付衣食住行,如果他想生活得舒适,他就必须工作)”可知,孩子长大后就应该有能力照顾自己。故选D。
53. A。 根据第一段的“How often one hears children wishing they were grown up, and old people wishing they were young again. (人们经常听到孩子们希望自己长大,老人们希望自己再次年轻)”可知,人们并不总是对自己的生活感到满意。A项“人们通常对他们的生活感到满意”与原文内容不符。故选A。
54. D。 根据第一段的“Each age has its pleasures and its pains, and the happiest person is the one who enjoys what each age gives him without wasting his time in useless regrets.(每个年龄段都有它的快乐和痛苦,最幸福的人是享受每个年龄段给予他的东西而不在无用的悔恨中浪费时间的人)”并结合下文讨论儿童和年轻人生活中的快乐和痛苦可知,本文主要为了表明一个人如果能很好地利用生命中的每一个年龄,他就是最幸福的。故选D。
55. C。 根据第一段的“Each age has its pleasures and its pains, and the happiest person is the one who enjoys what each age gives him without wasting his time in useless regrets.(每个年龄段都有它的快乐和痛苦,最幸福的人是享受每个年龄段给予他的东西而不在无用的悔恨中浪费时间的人)”并结合第二、三段分别讨论儿童和年轻人生活中的快乐和痛苦推知,下文应讨论老人生活中的快乐和痛苦。
My name is Clara. I still remember that chilly December day, sitting in science class. I’d finished a worksheet early and picked up a Time for Kids magazine. A piece of news caught my eye. NASA was holding an essay contest to name its Mars rover Before I even knew anything else about it, a single word flooded my 11-year-old mind: Curiosity.
I couldn’t wait for the bell to ring so I could get started on my essay. That afternoon, I raced home, sat down at the computer, and typed until my fingers ached. “Curiosity is an everlasting flame that burns in everyone’s mind…”
Five months later, my mom received a phone call, and immediately, a wide smile spread across her face.
On August 5, 2012, at 10:31 p.m., the rover named Curiosity touched down safely on the surface of Mars, and I was honored to have a front-row seat in NASA.
Curiosity is such an important part of who I am. I have always been fascinated by the stars, the planets, the sky and the universe. I remember as a little girl, my grandmother and I would sit together in the backyard for hours. She’d tell me stories and point out the stars. Grandma lived in China, thousands of miles away from my home in Kansas, but the stars kept us together even when we were apart. They were always there, yet there was so much I didn’t know about them. That’s what I love so much about space.
People often ask me why we go to faraway places like Mars. My answer is simple because we’re curious. We human beings do not just hole up in one place. We are constantly wondering and trying to find out what’s over the hill and beyond the horizon.
56. How did Clara get the news about the essay contest? (no more than 10 words)
_________________________________________________________________________________________________
57. Why did Clara have a front-row seat in NASA? (no more than 10 words)
_________________________________________________________________________________________________
58. What does Clara remember about the time spent with Grandma? (no more than 15 words)
_________________________________________________________________________________________________
59. What does the underlined phrase “hole up” mean? (1 word)
_________________________________________________________________________________________________
60. In your opinion, why is curiosity important? (no more than 20 words)
_________________________________________________________________________________________________
56. By reading a Time for Kids magazine. Or: From a Time for Kids magazine
57. She won the essay contest held by NASA. Or: She named the Mars rover “Curiosity”. Or: “Curiosity” was chosen as the name of the Mars rover.
58. She sat together with Grandma listening to her stories about stars. Or: Her grandma told her stories about stars. Or: They sat together talking about stars.
59. Stay/Remain/Live/Hide
60. Curiosity is important because it leads to discovery or inventions. Or: With curiosity, we keep asking questions and exploring the world unknown. Or: Curiosity drives us through our lives so that we never stop wondering about the things beyond our knowledge.
根据文章第一段“I’d finished a worksheet early and picked up a Time for Kids magazine. A piece of news caught my eye.” By reading a Time for Kids magazine. Or: From a Time for Kids magazine.
根据“On August 5, 2012, at 10:31 p.m., the rover named Curiosity touched down safely on the surface of Mars, and I was honored to have a front-row seat in NASA.” She won the essay contest held by NASA. Or: She named the Mars rover “Curiosity”. Or: “Curiosity” was chosen as the name of the Mars rover.
根据文章倒数第二段“I remember as a little girl, my grandmother and I would sit together in the backyard for hours. She’d tell me stories and point out the stars”可知,我记得当我还是个小女孩的时候,我和祖母会在后院一起坐上几个小时。 She sat together with Grandma listening to her stories about stars. Or: Her grandma told her stories about stars. Or: They sat together talking about stars.
根据“We are constantly wondering and trying to find out what’s over the hill and beyond the horizon.” Stay/Remain/Live/Hide.
根据最后一段“People often ask me why we go to faraway places like Mars. My answer is simple because we’re curious. We human beings do not just hole up in one place. We are constantly wondering and trying to find out what’s over the hill and beyond the horizon.” Curiosity is important because it leads to discovery or inventions. Or: With curiosity, we keep asking questions and exploring the world unknown. Or: Curiosity drives us through our lives so that we never stop wondering about the things beyond our knowledge.

Dear Chris,
Good news for you!
Yours,
Li Jin

Do you know how to get inexpensive airline and train tickets? On a recent flight, Laura was chatting happily with me in the seat until the conversation turned to fares. I bought my ticket 3 weeks in advance and paid $148. Laura paid the full fare of $480. She decided that next time she would find out how to travel for less. Here are some useful ways to travel for less. Cheap airline tickets. To fly for less money, you can buy non-refundable plane tickets 2 or 3 months before your trip. The cheapest way to fly is as a guide. In return for the service in a travel agency, you get a plane ticket that costs as little as one quarter of the regular fare or even less if the agency needs someone at the last minute. Recently, a guide flew a round trip from New York to Hong Kong for $100; a regular ticket costs around $1,800. Train passes. If you are going to do a lot of travelling by train, a train pass will save your money. Train passes can be especially useful in India, which has the world’s largest rail system, in Japan, where trains are fast and convenient, and in Europe, where trains go to over 30,000 cities. The Rail Europe Group even offers senior passes for those of 60 years of age and over, youth passes for those under 26 years of age, and provides a great bargain.
