Teenager pilot Zara Rutherford has become the youngest woman to fly solo around the world. The 19-year-old set off from Belgium on August 18, 2021 and landed back there on 20 January. Her journey took her across five continents in five months in an ultralight plane.
Unable to fly at night or in clouds, Rutherford was often racing against time and the weather. To overcome her fears, she focused on flying. “It’s about living in the present,” she said. The scariest part of the journey was flying across Siberia, where temperatures can often reach -50°C in winter.  It was beautiful but frightening. She also met lots of great and friendly people along the way. Surprisingly, one of her stops in Asia was Taipei City. Rutherford landed at Songshan Airport on December 14. She stayed for one night before flying out the next day.
Rutherford, who went to school in Winchester, England, comes from a family of pilots and got her flying licence at 17. “It’s a dream I’ve had my entire life, to fly in a plane around the world,” she said. The previous youngest woman to fly around the world solo was American Shaesta Waiz, who was 30.
Rutherford now plans to go to university to study electrical engineering. She said that the purpose of taking up the challenge was to encourage other girls to become pilots and study STEM subjects, which are science, technology, engineering and maths.
    Questions:
    11. When did Rutherford leave Taipei after a temporary stop there?
    12. What can be learned about her flight?
    13. Why did she take up the challenge of flying solo around the world?

Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to Cheston. Cheston is believed to be one of the most beautiful places for concert in West England. Throughout the whole summer, Cheston holds an internationally famous concert festival in a magnificently beautiful countryside background. The stage for the performances is surrounded by the charming 18th century architecture, which is more than perfect for classic music. However, what attracts our audience most is that everyone is seated less than twenty feet from the performers. This short distance from the performers can make the audience more involved in the music.
Now, I would like to say a few words about the concert festival itself. Cheston Concert Festival is an annual summer event. It is a charity activity to promote the appreciation of performing arts in West England. The Festival aims to benefit the local community by engaging young professional artists and stimulating young people to participate in live performances. We hope to support young musicians in their career development. Cheston Concert Festival does not receive any public financial support. Primarily, it relies on private contributions. We offer various levels of private cooperation and our supporters can have the privilege of priority booking.
    (Listen again, please.)

D.The preparation of a geography presentation.
    【答案】17.A    18.C    19.D    20.D
W: Remind me, Trevor. When should we make the presentation?
M: Dr. White said it’s on May 4th.
W: So that’s 10 days later. What are we going to include in it? Do you think we ought to start from some historical background of the island? Maybe something about the economy, or the role of the English language as well?
M: Oh no, we won’t have that time! And Dr White said we shouldn’t go into that sort of detail.
W: OK. But I think we ought to talk about the geographical location because not many people know where the islands are. And an overview of their education system. That means statistics on things like literacy rates and school places.
M: All right, so these are the topics we need to cover. Dr White said he wanted us to use plenty of visual tools and we might as well try them out before the presentation.
W: I see. The most important thing is the overhead projector.
M: No problem. That’s in the Media Room. Please remind me to book it.
W: Well, and we’ll need a map, probably two. One about the islands in a large scale. And one about West Africa.
M: Well, the West African one is no problem, because there’s one in the Resources Room. But the islands one is not easy.
W: Tell you what, there’s a very clear map of Santiago in a brochure from the Tourist Reception. I showed you last week, remember it?
M: Oh yeah. That’s a good idea. Listen, Julie, I really like your idea, but it’s almost time for my tutorial. May we split up? I will book all the visuals and you do the other stuff, and let’s meet again on Monday.
    (Now listen again, please.)
    Questions:
    17. What did Dr. White suggest the students do?
    18. Where can the map of the islands be found?
    19. What will the woman most probably do next?
    20. What are the two speakers mainly talking about?
    II. Grammar and vocabulary (共 20 题,每小题 1 分,满分 20 分)
    Section A
Directions: After reading the passage below, fill in the blanks to make the passage coherent and grammatically correct. For the blanks with a given word, fill in each blank with the proper form of the given word; for the other blanks, use one word that best fits each blank.
Rational People Think at the Margin
Decisions in life are rarely black and white but usually involve shades of gray. At dinner time, the decision you face is not between fasting and eating like a pig, but whether to take that extra spoonful of mashed potatoes. _____21_____ exams roll around, your decision is not between blowing them off and studying 24 hours a day, but whether to spend an extra hour reviewing your notes _____22_____ watching TV. Economists use the term “marginal changes” to describe minor adjustments to an _____23_____ (exist) plan of action.
In many situations, people make the best decisions by thinking at the margin. Margin means “edge,” so marginal changes are adjustments around the edges of _____24_____ you are doing. Suppose, for instance, that you ask a friend for advice about how many years to stay in school. If he compares for you the lifestyle of a person with a Ph. D.to _____25_____ of a grade school dropout, you might complain that this comparison is not helpful for your decision. You have some education already and most likely _____26_____ (decide) whether to spend an extra year or two in school. _____27_____ (make) this decision, you need to know the additional benefits that an extra year in school would offer (higher salaries throughout life and the sheer joy of learning), _____28_____ (combine) with the additional costs that you would pay (tuition and the forgone salaries while you are in school). By comparing these marginal benefits and marginal costs, you can evaluate whether the extra year is worthwhile and make the best decision _____29_____ is in your interest.
As _____30_____ (show) in this example, individuals and firms can make better decisions by thinking at the margin. A rational decision - maker takes an action if and only if the marginal benefit of the action exceeds the marginal cost.

You have some education already可知,语境表示正在决定是否继续读书,用现在进行时be doing,主语为you,be动词用are。故填are deciding。
故填To make。
故填that。
故填is shown/shown。
    Section B
Directions: Complete the following passage by using the words in the box. Each word can only be used once. Note that there is one word more than you need.

No child or young athlete should be subjected to genetic testing to find sporting talent or improve performance, conclude the experts in a statement published in the British Journal of Sports Medicine. The scientific evidence on the effectiveness of these ___31___ tests is simply far too weak to back their use, says the experts in the fields of genomics, exercise, sports performance, etc. While the science of genomics has advanced rapidly over the past decade, the ability to interpret the meaning of genetic test results is still at a relatively early stage.
But that has not stopped the growth of the “direct to consumer” genetic tests, which claim to be able to spot children’s athletic talents or tailor training to ___32___ performance. This fast - growing market has caused fears that the still limited level of knowledge on the genetics of sports performance is being ___33___ for commercial gain.
To inform the statement, the panel looked at the availability of DIY genetic tests. It found 39 companies ___34___ tests associated with sport or exercise performance or injury - almost twice as many as in 2018.
The claims included: “___35___ your training based on your sports genetics,” “Give parents and coaches early information on their child’s genetic ___36___ for success for sports,” and “We use your DNA results to help you lose fat, build muscle, get fitter.”
But the ___37___ of any good scientific data to guide selection of which variants to test weakens the value of multiple testing. Besides, while there is some evidence to suggest a link with enhanced physical performance, it is very weak, making the ___38___ value of these tests “actually zero,” says the statement.
The statement emphasizes the ___39___ of change in gene sequencing technology has got much faster than regulation. And it points out the importance of counselling before any genetic test is taken.
“While further evidence will undoubtedly emerge around the genetics of sport performance in the future, the data are currently very ____40____. Therefore, in this stage of limited knowledge, no child or young athlete should be exposed to genetic testing to define or alter training or for talent identification aimed at selecting gifted children or adolescents,” it concludes.

Swimming in an ocean of stars
    Ladies and Gentlemen,
It’s my great honor to receive the Clarke Award for Imagination in Service to Society. Thank you.
I started writing sci-fi because I looked for a way to escape the dull life, and to reach out, with imagination, to the mysterious time and space that I could never truly reach. But then I realized that the world around me became more and more like science fiction, and this process is speeding up. Future is like pouring rain. It reaches us even before we have time to open the umbrella. Meanwhile, when sci-fi becomes reality, it loses all its magic, and that frustrates me. Sci-fi will soon become part of our lives. The only thing I can do, is to push my imagination further to even more distant time and space to hunt for the mysteries of sci-fi. As a sci-fi author, I think my job is to write things down before they get really boring.
This being said, the world is moving in the direction opposite to Clarke’s predictions. In 2001, A Space Odyssey, in the year of 2001, which has already passed, human beings have built magnificent cities in space, and established permanent colonies on the moon, and huge nuclear-powered spacecraft have sailed to Saturn. However, today, in 2018, the walk on the moon has become a distant memory. And the furthest reach of our manned space flights is just as long as the two-hour mileage of a high-speed train passing through my city.
As a sci-fi writer, I have been striving to continue Arthur Clarke’s imagination. I believe that the boundless space is still the best direction and destination for human imagination. I have always written about the magnitude and mysteries of the universe, interstellar expeditions, and the lives and civilizations happening in distant worlds. This remains today, although this may seem childish or even outdated. It says on Arthur Clarke’s epitaph,“He never grew up, but he never stopped growing.”
Many people misunderstand sci-fi as trying to predict the future, but this is not true. It just makes a list of possibilities of what may happen in the future, like displaying a pile of cobblestones for people to see and play with. Science fiction can never tell which scenario of the future will actually become the real future. This is not its job. It’s also beyond its capabilities. But one thing is certain: in the long run, for all these countless possible futures, any future without space travel is gloomy, no matter how prosperous our own planet becomes.
Sci-fi was writing about the age of digital information and it eventually became true. I now look forward to the time when space travel finally becomes the ordinary. By then, Mars and the asteroid belts will be boring places and countless people are building a home over there. Jupiter and its many satellites will be tourist attractions. The only obstacle preventing people from going there for good, will be the crazy price.
But even at that time, the universe is still unimaginably big that even our wildest imagination fails to catch its edge. And even the closest star remains out of reach. The vast ocean of stars can always carry our infinite imagination.
    Thank you all.
59.What does the writer mean by the underlined sentence in the second paragraph?
A.Science technology has been developing fast before we realize it.
B.What happened in our life was mysterious and beyond our imagination.
C.We had a good outlook for the future and were desperate to realize our dream.
D.We managed to escape from the boring life and looked forward to the prosperous future.
60.What can we learn from the third paragraph?
A.What Clarke foresaw is childish and out of date, going against scientific theories.
B.It is feasible for human beings to fulfill challenging space missions that Clarke forecast.
C.Human beings have deserted imaging and exploring the attractive and boundless space.
D.Clarke’s predictions haven’t happened in real life and the reality won’t change very soon.
61.According to the passage, which of the following statements is true?
A.What is written in science fiction can never become a reality.
B.The writer considers it his duty to create sci-fi with author Clarke.
C.Science fiction provides readers with possibilities that future will bring about.
D.High price will likely stop humans from dreaming of living on other planets.
    62.What’s the writer’s attitude towards sci-fi creation?
    A.Curious B.Passionate
    C.Concerned D.Suspicious
    【答案】59.A    60.D    61.C    62.B
But then I realized that the world around me became more and more like science fiction, and this process is speeding up. Future is like pouring rain. It reaches us even before we have time to open the umbrella. 故选A。
Many people misunderstand sci-fi as trying to predict the future, but this is not true. It just makes a list of possibilities of what may happen in the future, like displaying a pile of cobblestones for people to see and play with.
As a sci-fi writer, I have been striving to continue Arthur Clarke’s imagination. I believe that the boundless space is still the best direction and destination for human imagination.
According to the passage, which of the following statements is true? Many people misunderstand sci-fi as trying to predict the future, but this is not true. It just makes a list of possibilities of what may happen in the future, like displaying a pile of cobblestones for people to see and play with.
    C
Sometime in 1885 or 1886, Arthur Conan Doyle was doodling (信手乱涂) on a sheet of paper. Inspired by Edgar Allan Poe’s Auguste Dupin, he had the idea for a “consulting detective”, who would also use “the Rules of Evidence” to catch his man. But what would he be called? “Ormond Sacker”? “Sherrinford Holmes”?
Had he settled on either of these alternatives, the modern-day fan clubs would be able to look closely through their magnifying glasses (放大镜) at that historic piece of paper at an exhibition opening at the Museum of London on Friday.
Sherlock Holmes: The Man Who Never Lived and Will Never Die is the first major show for the great detective since a Holmes display graced the Festival of Britain in 1951. It’s a winningly silly title: there are an unlimited number of men who never lived and wil never die, and a very large number of fictional creations of whom the same could also be said. But you can see what they are getting at.
It is likely that the show should take place at the Museum of London. Holmes occupied perhaps London’s most famous imaginary address — 221B Baker Street — and Dr. Watson wrote that his “knowledge of the byways of London was extraordinary”. In the form of his “Baker Street Irregulars”, he even employed a street-level spy-network o the homeless. London is often described as another character in the stories.
But, as historian David Cannadine points out in a fine, questioning essay in a new book accompanying the exhibition, Holmes’s London is actually only sketchily imagined in the stories. Conan Doyle grew up in Edinburgh, was educated in Lancashire and Austria, and lived in central London for less than a year before moving first to South Norwood, then in short order to Hindhead in Surrey and later to Sussex. To move Holmes around the capital, Conan Doyle used contemporary books of street maps and the London Post Office Directory. And he made all sorts of mistakes.
Also, before fan-fiction as we think of it now got under way, the Holmes stories led to a strange academic version of fan-fiction: Holmesians, taking a scholarly interest in the texts almost on the assumption that Holmes and Watson were real historical characters.
It should be noted that Conan Doyle himself didn’t sweat the details. Everything from the location of Watson’s old war wound to his marital situation and the address of his consulting room was distinctly patchy
Holmes is, or might as well be, a magician. In this respect, the modern BBC TV adaptations — whose leaps of tricks I’ve seen complained about — are in keeping with Conan Doyle’s originals.
He’s not the product, not any more, of a single author. And he’s never going to be on the reader’s level — nor that of his friend Dr. Watson. Conan Doyle’s consulting detective is, made by the imaginations of others, a sort of god. And like all the best gods, he is — as the new exhibition’s title indicates — both imaginary and everlasting.
63.What do Auguste Dupin and Sherlock Holmes share in common according to the author?
A.They are both fictional detectives that lived in London.
B.They are both characters created by Arthur Conan Doyle.
C.They both use “the Rules of Evidence” to solve cases.
    D.They both use magnifying glasses.
64.According to the passage, the sentence “Holmes’s London is actually only sketchily imagined in the stories” in paragraph 5 means that ______.
A.London is an important setting in the Sherlock Holmes stories
B.the city of London in the novel is different from how it really is
C.London is home to the two main characters, Sherlock and Watson
D.the author Conan Doyle made a lot of mistakes when in London
65.The word “Holmesians” in paragraph 6 probably refers to______.
    A.super fans of Holmes
    B.scholars interested in Holmes
    C.studies about Holmes
    D.mysteries concerning Holmes
66.What is the author’s opinion of Sherlock Holmes?
A.He is the most successful imaginary detective in history.
B.He is a god who will be loved by readers of all the time.
C.He is an imaginary character created both by Doyle and readers
D.He has an extraordinary talent as a detective who gains great popularity.
    【答案】63.C    64.B    65.A    66.C
根据第一段中“Inspired by Edgar Allan Poe’s Auguste Dupin, he had the idea for a ‘consulting detective’, who would also use ‘the Rules of Evidence’ to catch his man. But what would he be called? ‘Ormond Sacker’? ‘Sherrinford Holmes’? (受埃德加•爱伦•坡的小说《Auguste Dupin》的启发,他产生了“顾问侦探”的想法,这个侦探也会利用“证据规则”来抓住他的目标。但他叫什么名字呢?“Ormond Sacker”?“Sherrinford Holmes”?)”可知,Sherrinford Holmes是根据德加•爱伦•坡的小说《Auguste Dupin》创作的人物,他们都使用“the Rules of Evidence(证据规则)”来解决案件。故选C项。
64.词句猜测题。根据第五段中对作者成长经历的描写“Conan Doyle grew up in Edinburgh, was educated in Lancashire and Austria, and lived in central London for less than a year before moving first to South Norwood(柯南·道尔在爱丁堡长大,在兰开夏郡和奥地利接受教育,在伦敦市中心住了不到一年就搬到了南诺伍德)”和他创作方式的描写“To move Holmes around the capital, Conan Doyle used contemporary books of street maps and the London Post Office Directory. And he made all sorts of mistakes.(为了让福尔摩斯在伦敦四处走动,柯南·道尔使用了当时的街道地图书籍和伦敦邮局指南。他犯了各种各样的错误)”可知,柯南·道尔伦敦并不熟悉,所以历史学家大卫·康纳汀说“Holmes’s London is actually only sketchily imagined in the stories.(福尔摩斯笔下的伦敦实际上只是故事中粗略的想象)”是为了表明:小说中的伦敦和真实的伦敦的面貌是不一样的。故选B项。
65.词句猜测题。根据第六段“Holmesians”一词后“taking a scholarly interest in the texts almost on the assumption that Holmes and Watson were real historical characters.(几乎假定福尔摩斯和华生是真实的历史人物,对这些文本产生了学术上的兴趣)”可推知,Holmesians是一群把虚构的福尔摩斯与华生当作真实历史人物来研究的读者,是福尔摩斯的一群超级粉丝。故选A项。
根据最后一段中“He’s not the product, not any more, of a single author. And he’s never going to be on the reader’s level — nor that of his friend Dr. Watson. Conan Doyle’s consulting detective is, made by the imaginations of others, a sort of god.(他不再是一个作家的作品。而且他永远也不会和读者一样,也不会和他的朋友华生医生一样。柯南·道尔的咨询侦探是由其他人的想象创造出来的,像上帝一样的存在)”可推知,作者认为夏洛克·福尔摩斯是柯南·道尔和读者一起虚构出来的人物。故选C项。
    Section C(共 4 题,每小题 2 分,满分 8 分)

The origins of music festivals date back to ancient Greece, where such events often involved competitions in music, arts and sports. Modern music festival in the U. Coachella, one of the most popular festivals in the country, grossed $ 114. 6 million in 2017, setting a major record by earning more than $ 100 million.

He says, arguing that sharing a clip from a Billie Eilish or Cardi B performance with one’s Instagram followers is more satisfying than buying something expensive. A 2019 Deloitte survey of millennials — a group that makes up at 45% of the 32 million people who attend music festivals — finds that most value experiences: 57% of them said they prefer travel and seeing the world over owning a home.
_____70_____. As streaming becomes one of the most popular ways to listen to music, sales of tickets and products make up a large part of fans’ expenditures on music. Because listening to music has become practically free, the access is unprecedented and makes live music much more special, according to Chirinos. “Audiences are keen to connect to the artist and,” he says.
On the other hand, for artists, appearing at music festivals is an easier way to make money than depending on record sales or long tours. As record sales saw a sharp decline in the early-to-mid-2000s thanks to the growth of digital music, artists began depending on touring to earn money.
A.Music itself has changed as well, making festivals a bigger attraction for listeners.
B.Streaming pop stars’ performance makes music even more popular.
C.And alongside their rise in popularity, hundreds of smaller festivals have flourished.
D.People are more likely now to spend money on experiences over material goods.

Though it was not the first event of its kind, the 1969 event holds a mythical place within American pop-cultural history.(音乐节的起源可以追溯到古希腊,这些活动通常包括音乐、艺术和体育比赛。 虽然这不是第一次这样的活动,1969年的活动在美国流行文化史上有着神秘的地位)”以及后文“Coachella, one of the most popular festivals in the country, grossed $ 114. 6 million in 2017, setting a major record by earning more than $ 100 million.(科切拉音乐节是该国最受欢迎的节日之一,总票房为114美元。
69.根据上文“The mechanics that drove music festivals to becoming top earners have a lot to do with the effects of modern life, says Chirinos, a professor of clinical music and global health at New York University.(奇里诺斯是纽约大学临床音乐和全球健康教授,他说,推动音乐节成为高收入人群的机制与现代生活的影响有很大关系)”以及后文“he says, arguing that sharing a clip from a Billie Eilish or Cardi B performance with one’s Instagram followers is more satisfying than buying something expensive. A 2019 Deloitte survey of millennials — a group that makes up at 45% of the 32 million people who attend music festivals — finds that most value experiences: 57% of them said they prefer travel and seeing the world over owning a home.(他认为,与Instagram上的粉丝分享Billie Eilish或Cardi B的表演片段比买昂贵的东西更令人满意。Deloitte在2019年对千禧一代的一项调查发现,大多数有价值的体验:57%的千禧一代表示,他们更喜欢旅行和看世界,而不是拥有房子。千禧一代在参加音乐节的3200万人中占45%)”可知,本句承接上文说明音乐节成为高收入人群的机制与现代生活的影响之间的关系。故D选项“人们现在更有可能把钱花在体验上,而不是物质产品上”符合语境,故选D。
70.根据后文“As streaming becomes one of the most popular ways to listen to music, sales of tickets and products make up a large part of fans’ expenditures on music. Because listening to music has become practically free, the access is unprecedented and makes live music much more special, according to Chirinos. “Audiences are keen to connect to the artist and,” he says.(随着流媒体成为最受欢迎的听音乐方式之一,门票和产品的销售在粉丝的音乐支出中占据了很大一部分。奇里诺斯说,因为听音乐几乎是免费的,这种访问是前所未有的,使现场音乐变得更加特别。他说:“观众渴望与艺术家建立联系。”)”可知,上文提到“听音乐几乎是免费的,这种访问是前所未有的”,即产生了变化,也提到了“观众渴望与艺术家建立联系”,说明音乐对听众具有吸引力。故A选项“音乐本身也发生了变化,音乐节对听众的吸引力更大了”符合语境,故选A。
    IV Summary Writing(满分 10 分)
Directions: Read the following passage. Summarize the main idea and the main point (s) of the passage in no more than 60 words. Use your own words as far as possible.
    Click to download teacher
“Books will soon disappear in schools,” Thomas Edison announced in 1913: they would, he believed, soon be replaced by silent films. Each new wave of information technology - radio, television, computers - has led to similar predictions.
Like teachers, digital educational technology comes in many forms, from wonderful to awful. But, used properly, it now deserves more prominence (重要性) in schools - especially in poor countries where human teachers are often ignorant, absent or both.
According to a recent World Bank study of seven sub - Saharan African countries, half of nine - year - olds cannot read a simple word and three - quarters cannot read a simple sentence. The reason is terrible. The same study found that only 7% of teachers had the minimum knowledge needed to teach reading and writing effectively. When classrooms were inspected to see whether a teacher was present, half the time the answer was no. As for the absence of teachers, if expensive teachers do not turn up to class, government would, surely, fire them? Easier said than done. Poor governments often lack the money to check on teachers in distant villages.
Several recent studies suggested - tech can help. It seems to bring about bigger improvements in poor countries than in rich ones. Some of the scarce resources being spent on teachers could therefore be better spent on ed - tech. That does not mean dumping computers on schools in the hope that children will understand how to use them. Instead, it means providing schools with software that children can use with minimal help from an adult, that sends teachers prompts about what they are supposed to be teaching and that allows the authorities to check on whether the teacher is in the classroom.
Technology is no cure - all. Good traditional teachers are not outdated, and are never likely to be. And authorities need to hold teachers to account. But ed - tech can help greatly - by monitoring pupils and teachers alike, assisting the best teachers and, most important, making up for the failings of the worst.

If used properly, ed-tech will be a solution to educational problems facing poor countries, like poor teaching quality and teachers’ frequent absence. Actually, poor countries will benefit more than rich ones by spending scarce resources on ed-teach. In a word, ed-tech can make a big difference because it facilitates teachers’ work and helps regulate teaching quality.

The comic, which is titled “Perhaps Imperfect, but...”, depicts two dancers, one of whom is seated on a wheelchair and the other is standing up. The seated individual, who is learning to dance with a great deal of effort, is an inspiration to us all. Meanwhile, the standing dancer, whose moves are flowing and graceful, demonstrates her mastery of the art.
Life is not always perfect, and even those with disabilities can achieve incredible things, which this image reminds us of. The seated dancer, whose efforts are certainly not inhibited by her wheelchair, has a determination that is truly admirable. Additionally, the standing dancer, who is perhaps perfect in her own way, can learn that imperfection is a beauty in itself.
Thus, this comic inspires us all to appreciate our own strengths and weaknesses, and to support one another in our conquests to overcome our perceived limitations.
